Day Shift is a 2022 American vampire film that is about, you know, vampires. But unlike Twilight, it follows a modern approach with quite some differences.
There are genres of films that already have an established style that, if bent, could stir up some controversial conversations. The vampire-themed type of film is an example. There really isn't much that hasn't been explored already.
Many films in the years before seem to have made it a little bit of a challenge for filmmakers to come up with a concept that wouldn't seem like they were recycling ideas.
As usual, most of the recently released films on Netflix that seem to have popular faces make it to the top. This is why you see a movie that has a face like Jamie Foxx get to the top so quickly, especially when you have Snoop Dogg in the same film.
I, however, found the title quite interesting. There really was nothing fascinating about it. I just felt the inclination to, you know, check it out. And as usual, I had not seen the trailer; I still have not. Trailers never really do their job these days, so I jumped right into the film.

So, we are here now to review it. But before we do, let us take a little dive into its plot for better context. Shall we?
𝔸𝔹𝕆𝕌𝕋 𝕋ℍ𝔼 𝕄𝕆𝕍𝕀𝔼
Bud Jablonski is a hardworking dad who provides for his family by working as a pool cleaner, although apparently it is just a front for his real job as a vampire hunter. He makes money from hunting and killing vampires.
He, however, one day goes on to kill some vampire family members of one of the most dangerous vampires in town. Unknown to him that he had just brought upon him and his family some complications, he went about his day's business as normally would.

He tries selling the fangs of the vampires to make some money for his daughter's school fees and the cost of braces that she needs for her teeth. This proves to be futile, so he goes on to work for his old association to sell them for a much better price, as he has been working solo.
He begins working with them again as their vampire hunter and has been put on the day shift rather than the night shift, where the real gains are, so he can be monitored as he has a bad reputation.
The villian, whom he killed family members of, took his family hostage and now he has to save them. To prevent his family from being turned into vampires, he must go up against hundreds of vampires and the villian.
𝕄𝕐 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊 & 𝕆ℙ𝕀ℕ𝕀𝕆ℕ
There isn't too much to this story. Just a not-so-regular man with some family issues doing his not-so-regular job as a vampire hunter. While to others, he is just a regular bathroom specialist.
The idea of vampires in movies is not new, not in anyway. But then there are not too many movies that are about different concepts. They are norms for vampire movies, in which going in violation of them may present the film in a different light: a light that can either be accepted, or rather, rejected.
I had an expectation when I started the film, which was influenced by the first few scenes. I had been expecting a horror film type of film, one like those vampire films that send chills down the spine. I, however, came to realise that I was far from right. I was surprised to find myself laughing in some scenes, and in some others, I was confused for a bit.
My confusion was based on the fact that the film was mostly comedic, which did not fit in most of the time. I do not remember growing up seeing vampire films as comedic. I could see that the filmmakers were trying to deliver something out of the norm in the film industry. It is a good idea, great intent in fact, yet it did have some implications.
The stories that have to do with vampires are usually dramatic and intense, maybe scary and horrific sometimes, but "comedic" is not something you would attribute to them. This allows for depth in the storyline and gives room for a lot of thrills, as would be expected. So, to tag an attribute like "comedic" to a vampire story does not really allow the story's viewer to feel much of the depth of the storyline.
sᴛᴏʀʏʟɪɴᴇ
"Comic-action-horror" is what the film was described as. If comics, action, and horror are not delivered properly, they could end up contradicting each other. And this is the major case we have here.
The direction in which the story was to go was basically a cliche. This really shouldn't be a problem if everything in between stands to justify it. However, everything in between seemed to have been out of proportion.
Like I have made clear, the film is mostly comedic as well as action. The horror, however, is not so much. I would not even say that it comes close to suspenseful. Rather, I would say it was all thrilling, if you ask me.
The film is undoubtedly entertaining. It had blood and explosions, just like guns, knives, and garlic granades. This is why I would call the movie escapist in nature. It is something I would choose to see on days that I wanted to be distracted and just forget about all my problems. But then, if you take away the action, what you have left is a malnourished storyline.

There are some inconsistencies. I know vampires are enemies of the sun. Vampires are known to tend to die when exposed to sunlight. So to find that this rule was not explicitly followed in this film was strange. It is okay to have a different story, but at least make it consistent. In some cases, the vampires would die; in others, nothing would happen. I just did not get that. And the explanation given in the film just could not suffice for me.
Most of the time, I knew how everything was going to go. The majority of the scenes seemed as though they were generic and uninventive. It all seemed too predicatable, and there was nothing other than the action to cover it up.
It is comedic, but really, there were many times when they were unnecessary or just did not fit in, even unrelatable sometimes.
Nonetheless, I will comment on the action. There was a lot that went into making it make sense. If you are looking for something entertaining and all, this movie does that quite well. You may, however, want to know that there are a lot of gory scenes.
ᴄɪɴᴇᴍᴀᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ
If you are going to focus heavily on the action of a film, then doing well in the aspect of cinematography is not something you want to slack in. This is to say that you would want the film to look really good.
I give it to the filmakers in this aspect. I found many scenes in the film quite entertaining and sufficed for the questionable storyline. You sure can't have good action without good graphics.
It is great to see how much the film industry has grown in delivering quality with their CGI now.
ᴀᴄᴛɪɴɢ
Jamie Foxx, as usual, nails his part as being the lead role. He is definitely one of the best to have been chosen for this role, and he does absolute justice to it. Considering that the film was to have a comedic approach to it, we see him fitting his character just fine with his acting.
However, I believe his character was heavily reliant on his sidekick, played by Dave Franco, and vice versa. I would say they both needed each other as the characters, I mean, to present the story, ultimately making them both a power duo in the film.
I must say, Dave Franco is the biggest reason I enjoyed the film. His ability to enunciate the humorous elements of the film was quite impressive, and without that, the film may have been quite a flop, in my opinion (well, everything here is my opinion).
On the other hand, there were some characters that I just did not get the essence of. But I will be sticking with Meagan Good alone.
Meagan Good was basically under-utilized in the movie. She played a role that basically placed the depths of her acting dexterity under the rug. But I guess not all stars can shine all at once.
𝕄𝕐 𝔽𝕀ℕ𝔸𝕃 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊...
Everything cannot be a tour de force, which is understandable, yet there should be some level of sufficiency in execution in delivering a film that appeals to some standard.
Not everyone would regard the movie highly. In fact, there are mixed views on this movie. Many expected more from the story, and many were simply satisfied with the action and everything else.
The film may have done much better had it been made into a series instead. This would have allowed for more depth in the story and given space for character development. That way, there could be more elements in place for an impeccable story. But all that is easier said than done.
It's basically a movie you would want to see on a day where you want to escape from the real world for a moment. It is something to enjoy once, but not one to revisit.
I will therefore give it a rating of 𝟞/𝟙𝟘.
Day Shift es una película americana de vampiros de 2022 que trata, ya sabes, de vampiros. Pero a diferencia de Crepúsculo, sigue un enfoque moderno con bastantes diferencias.
Hay géneros de películas que ya tienen un estilo establecido y que, si se doblan, podrían suscitar algunas conversaciones polémicas. El cine de temática vampírica es un ejemplo. Realmente no hay mucho que no se haya explorado ya.
Muchas películas de los años anteriores parecen haber supuesto un pequeño reto para los cineastas a la hora de idear un concepto que no parezca que están reciclando ideas.
Como es habitual, la mayoría de las películas recién estrenadas en Netflix que parecen tener rostros populares llegan a la cima. Por eso ves que una película que tiene una cara como Jamie Foxx llega a la cima tan rápidamente, especialmente cuando tienes a Snoop Dogg en la misma película.
Sin embargo, el título me pareció bastante interesante. Realmente no había nada fascinante en él. Simplemente sentí la inclinación de, ya sabes, comprobarlo. Y como siempre, no había visto el tráiler; todavía no lo he visto. Los trailers nunca cumplen su función hoy en día, así que me metí de lleno en la película.

Así pues, estamos aquí para revisarla. Pero antes, vamos a hacer una pequeña inmersión en su argumento para contextualizarlo mejor. ¿Vamos?
𝕊𝕆𝔹ℝ𝔼 𝕃𝔸 ℙ𝔼𝕃𝕀́ℂ𝕌𝕃𝔸
Bud Jablonski es un padre trabajador que mantiene a su familia trabajando como limpiador de piscinas, aunque aparentemente es sólo una fachada para su verdadero trabajo como cazador de vampiros. Gana dinero cazando y matando vampiros.
Sin embargo, un día va a matar a algunos miembros de la familia de uno de los vampiros más peligrosos de la ciudad. Sin saber que acababa de traerle a él y a su familia algunas complicaciones, se dedicó a sus asuntos del día como lo haría normalmente.

Intenta vender los colmillos de los vampiros para conseguir algo de dinero para los gastos escolares de su hija y el coste de los aparatos que necesita para sus dientes. Esto resulta inútil, así que pasa a trabajar para su antigua asociación para venderlos a un precio mucho mejor, ya que ha estado trabajando en solitario.
Comienza a trabajar con ellos de nuevo como su cazador de vampiros y le han puesto en el turno de día en vez de en el de noche, donde están las verdaderas ganancias, para que pueda ser vigilado ya que tiene mala reputación.
El villano, del que mató a miembros de su familia, tomó a su familia como rehén y ahora tiene que salvarlos. Para evitar que su familia se convierta en vampiros, debe enfrentarse a cientos de vampiros y al villano.
𝕄𝕀𝕊 ℙ𝔼ℕ𝕊𝔸𝕄𝕀𝔼ℕ𝕋𝕆𝕊 𝕐 𝕆ℙ𝕀ℕ𝕀𝕆ℕ
La historia no es demasiado extensa. Sólo un hombre no tan común con algunos problemas familiares haciendo su trabajo no tan común como cazador de vampiros. Mientras que para los demás, es sólo un especialista en baños normal y corriente.
La idea de los vampiros en el cine no es nueva, ni mucho menos. Pero tampoco hay demasiadas películas que traten de conceptos diferentes. Son normas para las películas de vampiros, en las que ir en contra de ellas puede presentar la película bajo una luz diferente: una luz que puede ser aceptada, o más bien, rechazada.
Tenía una expectativa cuando empecé la película, en la que influyeron las primeras escenas. Esperaba una película de terror, como esas películas de vampiros que dan escalofríos. Sin embargo, me di cuenta de que no estaba en lo cierto. Me sorprendió encontrarme riendo en algunas escenas, y en otras, me confundí un poco.
Mi confusión se basaba en el hecho de que la película era mayoritariamente cómica, lo que no encajaba en la mayoría de los casos. No recuerdo haber crecido viendo las películas de vampiros como algo cómico. Pude ver que los cineastas estaban tratando de ofrecer algo fuera de la norma en la industria del cine. Es una buena idea, una gran intención de hecho, pero tenía algunas implicaciones.
Las historias que tienen que ver con vampiros suelen ser dramáticas e intensas, tal vez aterradoras y terroríficas a veces, pero "comedia" no es algo que se les atribuya. Esto permite profundizar en el argumento y da cabida a muchas emociones, como cabría esperar. Por lo tanto, etiquetar un atributo como "cómico" a una historia de vampiros no permite al espectador sentir la profundidad de la historia.
ʜɪsᴛᴏʀɪᴀ
"Cómic-acción-horror" es lo que se ha descrito de la película. Si el cómic, la acción y el terror no se presentan correctamente, pueden acabar contradiciéndose. Y este es el principal caso que tenemos aquí.
La dirección en la que iba a ir la historia era básicamente un cliché. Esto no debería ser un problema si todo lo que hay en medio lo justifica. Sin embargo, todo lo que hay en medio parece haber sido desproporcionado.
Como he aclarado, la película es principalmente de comedia y de acción. El horror, sin embargo, no lo es tanto. Ni siquiera diría que se acerca al suspenso. Más bien, diría que todo fue emocionante, en mi opinión.
La película es indudablemente entretenida. Tenía sangre y explosiones, al igual que pistolas, cuchillos y granadas de ajo. Por eso diría que la película es de naturaleza escapista. Es algo que elegiría para ver en los días en los que quisiera distraerme y olvidarme de todos mis problemas. Pero entonces, si quitas la acción, lo que te queda es un argumento desnutrido.

Hay algunas incoherencias. Sé que los vampiros son enemigos del sol. Se sabe que los vampiros tienden a morir cuando se exponen a la luz del sol. Así que encontrar que esta regla no se cumplió explícitamente en esta película fue extraño. Está bien tener una historia diferente, pero al menos que sea coherente. En algunos casos, los vampiros morían; en otros, no pasaba nada. No lo entendí. Y la explicación que se da en la película no me bastaba.
La mayor parte del tiempo, sabía cómo iba a ir todo. La mayoría de las escenas parecían genéricas y poco ingeniosas. Todo parecía demasiado predecible, y no había nada más que la acción para encubrirlo.
Es una comedia, pero realmente, hubo muchos momentos en los que eran innecesarios o simplemente no encajaban, incluso eran irrelevantes a veces.
No obstante, voy a comentar la acción. Había mucho que hacer para que tuviera sentido. Si buscas algo entretenido y todo eso, esta película lo hace bastante bien. Sin embargo, es posible que quieras saber que hay muchas escenas sangrientas.
ᴄɪɴᴇᴍᴀᴛᴏɢʀᴀғɪ́ᴀ
Si vas a centrarte mucho en la acción de una película, no querrás aflojar en el aspecto de la cinematografía. Es decir, se quiere que la película se vea realmente bien.
Se lo reconozco a los realizadores en este aspecto. Encontré muchas escenas de la película bastante entretenidas y suficientes para el cuestionable argumento. No se puede tener buena acción sin buenos gráficos.
Es estupendo ver lo mucho que ha crecido la industria cinematográfica en cuanto a la calidad de su CGI.
ᴀᴄᴛᴜᴀᴄɪᴏ́ɴ
Jamie Foxx, como siempre, clava su papel de protagonista. Es, sin duda, uno de los mejores elegidos para este papel, y le hace absoluta justicia. Teniendo en cuenta que la película iba a tener un enfoque cómico, vemos que encaja perfectamente con su personaje con su actuación.
Sin embargo, creo que su personaje dependía en gran medida de su compañero, interpretado por Dave Franco, y viceversa. Diría que ambos se necesitaban mutuamente como personajes, es decir, para presentar la historia, lo que en última instancia los convierte en un dúo de poder en la película.
Debo decir que Dave Franco es la mayor razón por la que disfruté de la película. Su capacidad para enunciar los elementos humorísticos de la película fue bastante impresionante, y sin eso, la película podría haber sido un fracaso, en mi opinión (bueno, todo aquí es mi opinión).
Por otro lado, hubo algunos personajes a los que no les pillé la esencia. Pero me quedo sólo con Meagan Good.
Meagan Good fue básicamente infrautilizada en la película. Interpretó un papel que básicamente puso bajo la alfombra la profundidad de su destreza interpretativa. Pero supongo que no todas las estrellas pueden brillar a la vez.
𝕄𝕀𝕊 ℙ𝔼ℕ𝕊𝔸𝕄𝕀𝔼ℕ𝕋𝕆𝕊 𝔽𝕀ℕ𝔸𝕃𝔼𝕊...
No todo puede ser un tour de force, lo cual es comprensible, pero debería haber cierto nivel de suficiencia en la ejecución para ofrecer una película que atraiga a algún estándar.
No todo el mundo tiene una buena opinión de la película. De hecho, hay opiniones encontradas sobre esta película. Muchos esperaban más de la historia, y muchos simplemente estaban satisfechos con la acción y todo lo demás.
La película podría haber funcionado mucho mejor si se hubiera convertido en una serie. Esto habría permitido profundizar más en la historia y dar espacio al desarrollo de los personajes. De ese modo, podría haber más elementos para una historia impecable. Pero todo eso es más fácil de decir que de hacer.
Es básicamente una película que querrías ver en un día en el que quieres escapar del mundo real por un momento. Es algo para disfrutar una vez, pero no para volver a verla.
Por lo tanto, le daré una calificación de 𝟞/𝟙𝟘.
