Girl from Nowhere

One of the peculiarities of human society is its determination to discern right from wrong and to form a moral position. In this sense, ethics and morality have been studied and discussed throughout history, not least because they form an essential part of human behaviour. But, like anything else concerning human beings, it is impossible to find and define the right set of values; at the end of the day, many have resorted to the famous expression "morality is subjective". Probably, throughout your life, there has been a time when you have come into conflict with the moral vision of another person or perhaps an entire culture, or even a conflict with yourself. Not surprisingly, life is full of situations that test us in many ways, even inspecting and reforming us. Based on this, have you ever thought about teaching someone a lesson? Perhaps classmates or co-workers, bosses, family, friends, or people completely unknown to you, but who have found a way to go against what you consider right. Whatever your answer is, I'm not here to judge, but to shed some light on a series that has earned my appreciation and is about this topic.

Una de las particularidades de la sociedad humana es la determinación que tiene para discernir el bien del mal y formar una posición moral. En este sentido, la ética y la moral han sido temas estudiados y discutidos a lo largo de la historia, y no es para menos ya que conforman una parte esencial del comportamiento humano. Pero, como cualquier cosa referente al ser humano, es imposible de encontrar y definir el set de valores correctos; al final del día, han sido muchos los que han recurrido a la famosa expresión "la moral es subjetiva". Probablemente, a lo largo de toda tu vida, ha habido una vez en la que has entrado en conflicto con la visión moral de otra persona o quizás de una cultura entera o, incluso, un conflicto contigo mismo. No es para menos, la vida está llena de situaciones que nos ponen a prueba de muchas formas, llegando a inspeccionarnos a nosotros mismos y reformándonos. Basándonos en esto, ¿alguna vez has pensado en darle una lección a alguien? Quizás compañeros de clase o trabajo, jefes, familia, amigos o personas completamente desconocidas para ti, pero que han encontrado la manera de ir en contra de lo que tú consideras correcto. Cualquiera que sea tu respuesta, no estoy aquí para juzgarla, sino para arrojar un poco de luz a una serie que se ha ganado mi reconocimiento y que va de este tema.

One day while browsing through the nooks and crannies of Netflix, looking for a series that would capture my attention enough to watch more than 2 episodes, I found one in particular that caught my curiosity because of the plot and the trailer. The series in question is as the post already indicates: Girl from Nowhere. An Asian series, to be more precise Thai, a Netflix original. Considering I had already watched several Netflix original Asian series, I found the plot of this one more refreshing, so I decided to give it a chance. The story follows a girl named Nanno, who goes from school to school under the façade of a normal, innocent student, with the aim of unravelling and exposing the darkest secrets, whether of the students or the academic staff, and teaching them a "lesson" as she sees fit, albeit in quite creative and, many of them, grotesque ways. As is to be expected, Nanno's "victims" are usually two-faced people, living a double life wearing masks that make them look like good people or at least allow them to hide all the questionable things they do behind other people's backs.

Un día navegando por los rincones de Netflix, en búsqueda de alguna serie que captara lo suficiente mi atención como para ver más de 2 capítulos, encontré una que en particular captó mi curiosidad por el argumento y el tráiler. La serie en cuestión es como el post ya lo indica: Girl from Nowhere. Una serie asiática, para ser más precisos tailandesa, original de Netflix. Teniendo en cuenta que ya había visto varias series asiáticas originales de Netflix, el argumento de esta me resultaba más refrescante, por lo que decidí darle una oportunidad. La historia sigue a una chica llamada Nanno, que va de colegio en colegio bajo la fachada de una estudiante normal e inocente, con el objetivo de desentrañar y sacar a la luz los secretos más oscuros, ya sean de los estudiantes o del personal académico, y darles una "lección" como mejor le parezca; eso sí, de maneras bastante creativas y, muchas de ellas, grotescas. Como es de esperarse, usualmente las "víctimas" de Nanno suelen ser personas con dos caras, que viven una doble vida usando máscaras que los hace ver como buenas personas o que al menos les permite esconder todo lo cuestionable que hacen a espaldas de los demás.

Beyond the storyline, the series consists of two seasons. Most of the episodes are self-conclusive, with the exception of a few two-part episodes. Therefore, the only recurring character is Nanno. This changes from the second season onwards, where another recurring character is introduced, who appears for a short time in the first few episodes until his story and relationship with Nanno is introduced. Each episode is also directed by different directors, which makes the development of each episode and its approach less repetitive. The series reminded me strongly of a particular anime with which it shares several characteristics; the anime in question is Kino no Tabi, so if you've ever seen it then you'll already have an idea of this particular series. Both have self-conclusive chapters, have a protagonist who moves from place to place and is pretty much the only recurring human character in most of the story. Both also focus on themes of morality and conflict, with the only difference being that Kino (the protagonist) tries not to make a moral judgement and therefore not to teach a lesson to the rest, but simply to act as any viewer would. It is for this reason that I found the plot familiar, but at the same time different by having a protagonist who plays both the role of "judge" and the role of executioner.

Más allá del argumento de la historia, la serie consta de dos temporadas. Mayormente son capítulos autoconclusivos, a excepción de unos cuantos que constan de dos partes. Por lo mismo, el único personaje recurrente es Nanno. Esto cambia a partir de la segunda temporada donde se introduce a otro personaje recurrente que aparece durante poco tiempo en los primeros capítulos hasta que es presentada su historia y relación con Nanno. Cada capítulo también es dirigido por distintos directores, lo cual hace que el desarrollo de cada capítulo y su abordaje no se tornen tan repetitivos. La serie me recordó fuertemente a un anime en particular con el que comparte varias características; el anime en cuestión es Kino no Tabi, por lo que si alguna vez lo has visto entonces ya tendrás una idea de esta serie en particular. Ambos tienen capítulos autoconclusivos, tienen un protagonista que va de lugar en lugar y es prácticamente el único personaje humano recurrente en la mayor parte de la historia. Ambos también se centran en temas sobre moral y conflictos, con la única diferencia de que Kino (protagonista) trata de no emitir un juicio moral y, por tanto, no dar una lección al resto, simplemente actuar como lo haría cualquier espectador. Es por esta razón que me pareció familiar la trama, pero al mismo tiempo diferente al tener a una protagonista que llevara tanto el rol de "juez" como el de verdugo.

Now, Nanno is a rather particular character, with a sometimes somewhat unpredictable attitude. She has very little interest in her own well-being and being, this in particular leads her to do anything to achieve her goal. There will be more than a few times when you'll see her allowing herself to be killed or beaten, giving pretty much as good as she gets in the process; I guess that's what comes with being practically supernatural. She also keeps a poker face most of the time, almost looking like a lifeless empty shell, which she usually breaks when faking some emotion that usually benefits her to do her job or when she enjoys giving someone a hard time, laughing maniacally almost bordering on the exaggerated at times, and I have to admit that at some points it came off as quite unnatural. She seems to be a being with no interest in life beyond her role as "Nanno" and, despite this, one can see in certain instances that she does show concern, or at least some semblance of it, for people, despite what her own existence entails. Emotional aspects aside, Nanno has a great knowledge of other people, which gives her the ability to be extremely calculating and execute her actions as she sees fit. She is, in short, the judge and executioner who will not mind sacrificing herself in order to do her bidding, but who is neither entirely evil nor entirely good.

Ahora, Nanno es un personaje bastante particular, con una actitud a veces algo impredecible. Ella tiene muy poco interés en su propio bienestar y ser, esto en específico le lleva a hacer cualquier cosa para lograr su objetivo. No serán pocas las veces en las que la verás permitiéndose ser asesinada o golpeada, dándole prácticamente igual en el proceso; supongo que es lo que lleva ser un ser prácticamente sobrenatural. También mantiene una cara de póker la mayor parte del tiempo, casi llegando a verse como una cáscara vacía sin vida alguna, que suele romper cuando finge alguna emoción que usualmente le beneficia para cumplir con su trabajo o cuando disfruta de darle un merecido a alguien, llegando a reírse maníacamente casi a veces rozando la exagerado, y he de admitir que en algunos momentos llegó a resultar bastante poco natural. Ella parece un ser sin ningún interés en la vida más allá de su rol como "Nanno" y, a pesar de eso, se puede apreciar en ciertas instancias que sí demuestra preocupación, o al menos algo parecido, por las personas, a pesar de lo que conlleva su propia existencia. Dejando de lado aspectos emocionales, Nanno tiene un gran conocimiento del resto de personas, lo que le otorga aun más la facilidad de ser extremadamente calculadora y ejecutar sus acciones como más le resulte conveniente. Ella es, en pocas palabras, la juez y verdugo que no le importara sacrificarse a sí misma con tal de cumplir su cometido, pero quien tampoco es ni enteramente malvada ni completamente buena.

Like Nanno's personality, the series is just as unpredictable in some ways, and the further you go, the weirder and weirder the stories become. Each chapter opens with a sentence that serves as an introduction to the theme of the chapter (the opening sentence of this post comes from the first chapter of the series), many of these topics being somewhat crude or dealing with social problems, be it sexual abuse, bullying, unwanted pregnancy, among others. Most of the stories tend to end with a pretty bleak ending, I can only mention one episode that hasn't had a dark plot let alone an unhappy ending, and that's saying a lot, but I think it's quite understandable considering what the series is about. I mentioned at the beginning that each episode is directed by a different director, and it's something that comes through in every story: there are different approaches, camera movements, use of colour and shadows, as well as sound effects and background music. I particularly treasure this detail because I find it gives personality to each episode and is an interesting way of conveying the plot; one episode in the second season stands out, in which mostly black and white was used to depict an authoritarian school.

Al igual que la personalidad de Nanno, la serie resulta igual de impredecible en ciertos aspectos, y es que mientras más se avanza, más y más raras se vuelven las historias. Cada capítulo abre con una frase que sirve como una introducción al tema del capítulo (la frase inicial de este post viene del primer capítulo de la serie), siendo muchos de estos tópicos algo crudos o que tratan sobre problemas sociales, ya sea el abuso sexual, el acoso escolar, el embarazo no deseado, entre otros. La mayoría de las historias suelen terminar con un final bastante desolador, solo puedo mencionar un capítulo que no haya tenido una trama oscura ni mucho menos un final infeliz, y eso es decir mucho, pero creo que es bastante entendible teniendo en cuenta de lo que va la serie. Al principio mencioné que cada capítulo está dirigido por un director diferente, y es algo que se nota en cada historia: hay diferentes enfoques, movimientos de cámara, uso del color y las sombras, así como de los efectos de sonido y la música de fondo. En particular atesoro este detalle porque encuentro que le da personalidad a cada capítulo y resulta una manera interesante de transmitir la trama; destaco un capítulo de la segunda temporada en el que mayormente se utilizó el blanco y negro para representar a un colegio autoritario.

Touching on the last point would be the development. Although it is a series with independent chapters and there is no development beyond the main plot of each chapter, from the second season onwards this changes with the arrival of another character, who represents Nanno's nemesis. The appearance of this counterpart comes hand in hand with a break in Nanno's own being, who becomes more affected and more affected by emotions typical of human behaviour; she begins to have doubts and to question her role and her performance, even entering into conflict herself as the season progresses. We see how a character who until then had remained unperturbed by any action or decision begins to break down and find herself disturbed by nothing more and nothing less than the human condition itself and the need to know what is the right thing to do. The final chapter of the second season is the final collapse, where the poker face falls off and a Nanno who has been stripped of her original certainty comes to light. Between her conflict and miscalculations, Nanno decides to throw it all away and on impulse surrenders to her own destiny. Ending up surrounded by white flowers stained red by her blood and with a smile, in one of the many acts of self-sacrifice seen in the series, only this time without the motive of fulfilling her role. The ending is inconclusive as to what exactly happens to Nanno, although it hints that there could be a continuation of the story - after all, the war between good and evil is never-ending, isn't it?

Tocando el último punto sería el desarrollo. Si bien es una serie con capítulos independientes y no hay un desarrollo más allá del de la trama principal de cada capítulo, a partir de la segunda temporada esto cambia con la llegada de otro personaje, quien representaría la némesis de Nanno. La aparición de esta contraparte viene de la mano con un quiebre en el propio ser de Nanno, quien se ve más afectada y más afectada por emociones propias del comportamiento humano; empieza a tener dudas y a cuestionarse su rol y su desempeño, llegando a entrar ella misma en conflicto conforme va avanzando la temporada. Vemos como entonces un personaje que hasta entonces había permanecido imperturbable ante cualquier acción y decisión empieza a quebrarse y verse inquietada por nada más y nada menos que la propia condición humana y la necesidad de saber cuál es la cosa correcta por hacer. El capítulo final de la segunda temporada es el colapso final, donde se cae la cara de póker y sale a la luz una Nanno que ha sido despojada de su certeza original. Entre su conflicto y los errores de cálculo, Nanno decide deshacerse de todo eso y en un impulso se entrega a su propio destino. Acabando rodeada de flores blancas manchadas en rojo por su sangre y con una sonrisa, en uno de los tantos actos de autosacrificio que se ha visto en la serie, solo que esta vez sin el motivo de cumplir con su rol. El final es inconcluso con lo que le sucede exactamente a Nanno, aunque da indicios a que podría haber una continuación de la historia, después de todo, la guerra entre el bien y el mal es interminable, ¿no?

Certainly, for a Netflix original series, it has points in its favour. I've watched many of the Asian series in Netflix's catalogue and honestly this was one of the few that managed to capture my attention entirely. Some negative points would be the acting at various points throughout the series; at times it can come across as unnatural and over the top, as I mentioned when talking about Nanno's laughter earlier. I would have liked to see a bit more development in terms of Nanno and his story, but being that it's a series of self-contained chapters and that it's possibly material they could use in case there is a third season (by the end it's likely there will be one), I didn't give it that much weight. I found the stories in each episode quite interesting as well as unexpected, especially several in the second season. But beyond a few details, I found it an interesting and particularly entertaining series. It's certainly worth giving some of the episodes a chance; the creativity with which Nanno performs is unmissable. And with that, I'll say goodbye for this time.

Desde luego, para ser una serie original de Netflix, tiene puntos a su favor. He visto muchas de las series asiáticas del catálogo de Netflix y sinceramente esta ha sido de las pocas que ha logrado captar mi atención enteramente. Algunos puntos negativos serían la actuación en varios momentos a lo largo de la serie; a veces puede llegar a parecer poco natural y exagerada, como mencioné al hablar de la risa de Nanno anteriormente. Me habría gustado ver un poco más de desarrollo en cuanto a Nanno y su historia, pero siendo que es una serie de capítulos autoconclusivos y que posiblemente sea material que puedan usar en caso de haber una tercera temporada (por el final es probable que sí haya una), no le he dado tanto peso. Las historias de cada capítulo me parecieron bastante interesantes así como inesperadas, especialmente varias de la segunda temporada. Pero más allá de algunos cuantos detalles, me ha parecido una serie interesante y particularmente entretenida. Desde luego vale la pena darle una oportunidad a alguno de sus capítulos; la creatividad con la que Nanno se desempeña es imperdible. Y con eso, me despido por esta vez.
