The epilogue of each chapter sums up the plot perfectly: "Kintaro Oe, 25 years old, has dropped out of Tokyo University, because it could not offer him more. Since then, he flies from job to job, with the aim of learning in the school of life. He travels all over Japan in his faithful Mikasuki. Don't forget, in a day not too far away, this young man will save Japan, and perhaps the whole world."

As you already read, this is an ecchi, so you may be wondering: Why is someone like him reviewing an ecchi? Well, as some of you may know, this is a genre from which there is almost nothing redeemable, those of the last two decades have accustomed us to the same old tropes: normal protagonist who wants to live a normal life that is both physically and mentally average but will still have at least 5 women teaching him everything just for saying two nice words and/or because the scriptwriter won't stop using the typical "he slipped and fell on her breasts". Golden Boy doesn't have this monotonous formula. Each chapter Kintaro goes through different jobs in which each one is related to a girl who catches his attention, earning his scorn for various reasons (almost always for being a degenerate) and sometimes this will have him on the verge of being fired, but he always manages to show his worth, so that the woman on duty falls in love with him. But it is just when it seems that he has his life solved or has settled down to continue his way to keep learning, not knowing that he managed to conquer her.

    sc4.png

In subjective matters it could be said that the strong point of the series is actually the comedy, there are a lot of hilarious situations that have nothing to do with eroticism and a lot of meme moments full of overreactions and embarrassing situations in which the main character gets into, and most of them end up getting beaten up by both disgruntled women and men with whom he should not have messed with, and for a change the jokes that do derive from ecchi do not give the cringe as the most modern ones, and as it is in OVA format it does not leave the viewer with the desire to see more skin (hornys) even if it is mainly in the thoughts of Kintaro.

    sc2.png

And although it sounds crazy, Golden Boy actually has a good message, that's right, an ecchi with a good message. For the main theme of the series is the passion for our jobs, that we don't just learn in institutions but that we must take advantage of what life can teach us, and to never forget what inspired us to dedicate ourselves to our professions. Ironically, a globetrotter who goes to work in maintenance turns out to be the answer for those who feel that their work is stagnant, or that after a few years they forget why they were so passionate about their profession. Many would think that this message would not be enough to consider an ecchi as a quality work, but even if in the end Kintaro manages to conquer the girl despite his indecent behavior, in the end his good deeds and the positive changes he brings to his workplace are the ones that end up having more weight, very different from modern protagonists that with very little already make half the world fall in love.

    characters.png

    • Kintaro Oe He is the only character with a consistent presence in each chapter so I can only talk about him in depth. He is a restless worker who travels like a nomad all over Japan getting jobs, mainly in maintenance, where he will not miss the opportunity to see what the professionals do in order to record what he learns there in his notebook. At first glance he looks like a young idiot and half sick; but in the end he manages to show that he never stopped paying attention to his surroundings, managing to handle computers, give karate goals, swim or cook in just one week; added to the fact that he is honest, determined, good with children, and has a minimum of respect for innocent teenage girls. All in all this makes it seem like him being a pervert who puts his cheeks on women's toilet seats seems like a fair flaw to balance the rest. And maybe a perverted protagonist can be morally counterproductive, but this is not only solved by giving consequences to his actions, but a proactive protagonist who makes suggestive scenes happen naturally is preferable to a reactive princess who has to be put into forced situations in order to have some ecchi by pretending the anime has some morality when in reality it just gives the message that you can have all the women you want without doing anything or standing out in anything.

Not only do I love his 90's style, but how extremely expressive he is, especially Kintaro, from becoming more cartoony to more realistic and detailed. Also the animation being quite fluid both in simple things like a broom hitting someone in the head to a whole motorcycle racing scene.

    sonoro.png

As far as music is concerned, there is not much to say, even the opening sounds like ambient music. But as far as voice acting is concerned, I can tell you that it is great, if the original was already good, I can tell you that in English it is even better, Doug Smith gives a unique charisma to Kintaro and just to tell you that it is essential to see it in English.

    CONCLUSION.png

The Golden Boy OVAs are something extremely memorable that surpassed my expectations. But don't look at what happens later in the manga, all those positive points that the manga had given, it sends them to the trash to become something more explicit and pretentious. It's one of those few times when an Anime is better than the Manga for not adapting everything, so it earns a 6,9/10

  2. Golden Boy - Anime’s savior or is it?@ascheriit2568d

Anime has been through much transformation since its inception, not only the art style has changed even the way of telling the story and creating characters has changed drastically through out the years. Today I will be talking about a show from the 90’s that I recently stumbled upon by chance and thoroughly enjoyed - Golden Boy. Nah just kidding I have seen numerous clips of the show on various social media platforms so I know what I am getting into before starting the series, the only thing I am regretting is that it took me too much time to finally begin binge watching it, it was a very good show it is like an oasis in the middle of this season’s dryness.

Well that’s all for the introduction, let’s go to the article proper right away!

    Golden Boy

    Genres: Adventure, Comedy, Ecchi

    Studio: APPP

    Aired: October 27, 1995 to June 28, 1996

The biggest hurdle to tackle when you are going for dated anime shows is the noticeable difference in the quality of animation, that much you should be prepared for. However, for me, these older animation and art style offers no problem whatsoever. In the contrary I find them more artistic and regal as they are mostly drawn by hand that time showing the artists raw talent at work, maybe it is just me being sentimental though, I am a 90’s kid after all.

    Screenshot_20190508-201122.png

Now let’s talk about Golden Boy. The show is a six episode series of Original Video Animations (OVAs) featuring Kintaro Ooe a college of law drop out that travels around Japan using his bike Mikazuki 5 to learn about life. Each episode is a stand alone story about him and a female character who will eventually fall head over heels for Kintaro at the end of the episode, rinse and repeat for six times and you’ve got a show. The plot summary sounds like your any other harem show in existence and that is something I won’t deny, this is indeed a Harem show no matter how you slice it. But is that really all there is to it? If you paid attention to my previous sentences I used the word “female” rather than girl, grill or waifu to refer to the characters, this of course is not just me trying to use a different word, it was intentional on my part, to show one of this series’ biggest difference compared to most generic harem shows or maybe most of the anime shows we’ve been getting recently, for that matter. I am sure most of you are familiar with the terms tsundere, yandere, kuudere and other deres out there, these are character archetypes that most anime characters fit into and that is where I am drawing the line between this and those other harem shows, this series’ female characters are all unique characters that doesn’t seemingly fit in any of the mainstream archetypes these days (as far as I can tell, that is). The first one is an intelligent and strict software developer company president, the second one is a manipulative daughter of a Mayor, the third is a timid and old fashioned sweetheart, the fourth is a dominant boyish Olympic gold medalist swimmer, the fifth one is a traditional and elegant beauty that loves to ride her big bike “bimo-chan” and the last one is a caring and kind animator. As you can see the diversity of the characters is not only driven from their difference in personalities and character design, they are from different places and have different backgrounds therefore each one are personified fitting the unique persona they are representing and not just outright cardboard cutouts to fit in any of the aforementioned archetypes just to cater to the taste of different viewers.

    Screenshot_20190507-210953.png

Another important part of a harem, of course is the male lead and Kintaro will easily put more than 90% of all those dense mofos into shame. The character of Kintaro is that of a lecherous free spirited guy that is secretly more capable than he lets out. He is, as I mentioned earlier, a college of law drop out but it is not because he is a failure kind of guy, on the contrary he chose to drop out because he already mastered it and he no longer has the need to stay there any longer. He can be seen taking notes most of the time and scribbling female body while at it to document the things he learned. He is not only good at learning, he is also very well at translating those new learnings to produce results which is the main reason why most of the female characters he met has fallen deeply in love with him. He also has a gentleman’s(?) heart and kindness that he doesn’t brag about, he has accomplished a lot but not once he was seen boasting about it. He is also proficient at using martial arts that he can easily deal with a black belter but he refuses to use it even if he gets badly beaten up at times because he respects its teachings. Overall Kintaro is a really great MC that gives a real reason for the ladies to like him though he is extremely perverted that even I find some of his actions questionable sometimes (the guy has a deep attachment to toilet seats it seems).

    Screenshot_20190507-203345.png

Now for the final stretch, the show is not only a glorified fan service show with notable male lead and unique and well defined female characters, it also doubles as a golden comedy stash. If I were to briefly summarize the show I would have to say that it is an unorthodox comedy anime that is not chained by things like common sense and modesty. I know that we’ve got a lot more risque shows these days compared to this one but this one did it all without sacrificing the story telling and not ending up as a lame excuse just to showcase NSFW stuff. Golden Boy has its decent share of nudity and scenes that you’d better not let other people around you catch a glimpse of but at the end of the show it is not those stuff that you will remember but how wild and fun of a ride it is (except episode 5, that one is exceptionally erotic) that you will end up craving for more. It is also a bonus that Kintaro’s voice actor is immensely talented and a perfect fit for the role that I believe the comedy wouldn’t have been as effective had it been done by any other person, he is just that good at sounding like a full-blown lecher lol.

    Screenshot_20190507-204525.png

Overall, Golden Boy is an anime that pulled no punches to deliver what it ought to deliver - entertainment. By modern standards I believe many would find the show a bit offensive because of how perverse Kintaro is but that won’t change the fact that it is one hell of a ride that will continue to live on for years to come. It is a prime example of how harem shows should be and how male leads should get their acts together and make their harem members’ affection well deserved. Lastly, the show is a testament that the female characters need not to fall into any of the meta classifications to capture the heart of the audience, uniqueness is one of the things that the current era lacks and that is something that I learned again on this one. A must watch for those that doesn’t mind nudity and a little weirdness in their comedy shows, 10/10. Benkyou, benkyou!

    Screenshot_20190508-201653.png

It has been a while since I made an article focusing on a single show. I am still not done with Bakuman so I decided to watch a few shorter series in between so as to be able to pump out new stuff every week. Well nothing much going on in my end, I am still getting by and recently I started to give Pokemon GO and Pokemon Duels a shot again, I am still playing Revolve8 by the way. I am looking for more strategy and interactive games involving duels against fellow players recently so I may try Shadowverse again sometime soon. If you guys have any decent games that you think might interest me please drop by the comment section, I am done with RPGs for the mean time by the way. Anyway that is all for this week and see you again next time!

    Ciao~

  3. Golden Boy : A hilarious short Anime OVA@maverickinvictus2830d

    image.png

    Source

I was looking for some recommendations of funny anime and I came across Golden Boy and the comments were it is a much watch. I am not really a fan of slice of life, reality animes as I tend to gravitate more towards fantasy or mecha animes but I decided to give it a try since it is relatively short with only 6 episodes in the Anime OVA release.

Watching it made me realize that I have seen a clip of it that I found hilarious which is the swimming scene. If you can't remember it or have not watched it make sure you watch the embedded video. It looked like something from Free (Yes I watched Free! Don't judge me senpai!) but well it is better if you watch the video.

Golden Boy is the story of Kintaro Oe, a 25-year-old freelancer, who before graduating from law school decided to drop out and embark on his journey to study life.

Each episode would have him start with a new part-time job and of course the woman in focus for that episode.

He would often time start off as being an idiot or useless and the woman looking down on him. Which brings us to one of his quirks. He is a pervert. He has some strange fetishes from rubbing his face on toilet bowls to licking stuff.

    image.png

    Source

These moments had me in stitches as he enjoyed being beaten up, kicked, slapped and generally abused. Totally some BDSM shit going on here!

Although he acts and looks like an idiot most of the time he has one another quality that sets him apart from others. It is his indomitable will to finish the job or task at hand. Often times improving things.

In his pursuit to study everything and become knowledgeable, he writes everything in his notebook which contains information, drawings and transcribed notes of what was said.

    image.png

    Source

By the end of the episode, having solved the problem of the woman he is lusting over, he rides off to the sunset, aboard his bike called Crescent moon to the next job.

Speaking of jobs, Kintaro has done a myriad of different jobs which includes not just physical labor work but also one that utilizes his empathy to people and his ingenious out of the box thinking.

By far Episode Three: "Danger! The Virgin's First Love" was my favorite episode and had me laughing so hard. A little warning though you can't watch this with other people around or very young children as the sexual innuendos and imagery is borderline porn. One commenter said that the manga after the first arc became more and more hentai-like.

Yet it is a joy to watch because of the comedy and seeing Kintaro overcome the situation is just amazing.

In an anime world full of Over Powered Protagonists like Kirito from Sword Art Online, Ainz Ooal Gown of Overlord and of course One Punch Man it is refreshing to see someone that overcomes things because of tenacity and hardwork.

So take a trip down the NSFW world of Golden Boy and tell me what is your favorite episode!
