1. ›'Jerry & Marge Go Large' by David Frankel Review: A wholesome story, and decent film@namiks1038d

   

   I think we are entering the era of the last actual A lister celebrities as they rapidly age and are replaced with a majority television oriented group of actors. With age is coming either two options: they go into the terrible comedy films that are aimed more at children, or they go into the more artistic, indie side of filmmaking with more defined, unique roles. Bryan Cranston in particular is an actor we all know from either two massively popular shows: Malcolm in the Middle, and Breaking Bad. These two performances were vastly different from each other, and it was already made clear that Cranston has what it takes to act in a bit of everything. With age, however, are roles more limited? To some degree, they are. Even Robert Redford's send-off was a film about a retiring and living life how you want. With the limited roles comes the potential for hit or miss stories. But Jerry & Marge Go Large was a fun little surprise, and one that had managed to escape me for quite a while. Cranston, of course, managed to deliver greatly.

   Now, don't get confused! Jerry & Marge Go Large is by no means a reboot or sequel to Kevin & Perry Go Large! Jokes aside, this is a fun, wholesome narrative. A film that has a bit of everything but surprisingly ended on a positive note (don't worry, this isn't a major spoiler or really a spoiler at all). Even with its theme, I couldn't help but feel things would go south and that this would be a film of heartbreak and challenge in pursuit of self-discovery in old age. I think one of the things I liked the most about the film was in fact that it didn't end up being a bleak story in which a old couple get beaten down by the system. Instead, it was a nice indie film that hit all the right marks. When I say indie, I don't mean overly artistic arthouse indie, I mean lower budget, simplistic, but effective. I really liked it. And I haven't seen a film like this in a while that manages to be simple without too much drama and pulling at the emotions.

   The idea of old age is often presented as a time of immense boredom, in which a person has finally managed to obtain their freedom through retirement but is now faced with the existential question of "What next?" While I don't usually like this idea as it presents characters that have never truly lived and only considered work as life, Jerry & Marge Go Large actually does look at its protagonist Jerry as a man that really hasn't done much, and has lost his way both in his marriage and with his safe knowledge of statistics through mathematics. This safe life has led to one of little challenge, until he discovers that in one specific location, it is actually statistically certain that he can win at the lottery; this is by no means of illegal nature, and merely a statistical flaw that means buying large numbers of tickets in that area will inevitably yield some winning tickets. Jerry, suddenly occupied by this, convinces his wife to join him in this as they both look to rekindle the spark of their marriage.

   Jerry and Marge begin a small company that uses the town's people as investors in this idea, pooling together money as their winnings begin to take off. Though there is a Harvard student that seems to also have managed to catch on and makes things a lot more risky for them both. The film takes on a small rivalry between old and young, humble and greedy. But there is little drama between the two, and I quite liked how this was done. It didn't dramatise their rivalry in any over the top manner, but gave the film that extra edge it needed to show the reasons behind this sudden decision. And ultimately, it's one of self-discovery still. A manner of giving back to those around him, to rediscover the love for his wife and the importance of that connection now that retirement is present; something Marge expresses great interest in, as something she has waited for for a long time so that they finally have the rest of their lives together. This is where the film felt more wholesome: a man and his wife in their older years starting a project together that aims to help those around them, while discovering the things that now really matter with their newfound time.

   There isn't a whole lot more to the story. A lot of the build up is how Jerry manages to convince people around him to join him in this venture, regular people and sometimes pretty much strangers; this includes a currently divorced clerk played by Rainn Wilson, who many may recognise from The Office as Dwight. These side characters offer a bit of depth to the world and the surroundings, giving the film that extra room that is needed to fill in the gaps, but they never feel forced or unrealistic. Many of them are found in everyday workplaces, regular people just going about their days. It gives the film a very small town feeling in which most people know each other and there is some degree of community. Some of the comedy comes from these characters also, but this isn't a film I would really consider to be a comedy, it certainly isn't going out of its way in attempt to make you laugh. Just a few lighthearted moments here and there.

   And despite being a relatively small indie film, I'd say it looks pretty good. The lighting is colourful and bright, with very believable but good looking environments in terms of the set design. It definitely didn't have a cheap look to ant of it. In terms of the directing and cinematography, I'd argue it barely resembled a lower budget indie film. It felt more like the kind of blockbuster title you'd find in the cinema over a decade ago, before films in cinemas all had to be huge epics. I'm quite glad I managed to come across it thanks to the recommendation from someone. It seems films like this are more like gems these days, in which they aren't trying to be more than they need to. Just telling a story, not taking up too much of your time, and then moving on. A nice film to watch any day of the week to just relax and have a story told to you that isn't full of too many emotions, or too loud with action thrown in your face.

   Of course, mostly carried by Cranston, who still manages to be such an enjoyable, charismatic actor. Even as the years roll in, nothing seems to be stopping him. I think I may have to look out for more titles with him!

It is a story of comedy and drama, it focuses on the marriage of Jerry and Marge who have been married for more than 40 years, their life changes when Jerry is retired from his job for which he lost the main thing on which he focuses his With a talent for numbers, one day by chance he came across a lottery ticket and upon evaluating it he realized that it had an error which he could exploit in order to increase his retirement fund and give a new meaning to his life.

   The construction of the world does not present anything extraordinary or anything similar to it, the setting seeks to be as casual and realistic as possible by capturing a town that shows the deterioration caused by time and only being the shadow of what it once was, a pretty ordinary scenario.

   The plot is well carried out, it is entertaining and quite moving by presenting a very entertaining and enjoyable story, the comedy moments are quite white and simple. On the other hand are some other thoughtful messages which feel like advice from someone mature based on her life experience and not like an empty sermon. The narrative has a fairly calm rhythm that, hand in hand with its short duration, results in a success to bring something without many aspirations other than to tell you the story of something that happened.

   La trama esta bien llevada, la misma es entretenida y bastante enternecedora al presentar una historia muy amena y disfrutable, los momentos de comedia son bastante blancos y simples. Por otro lado están alguno que otros mensajes reflexivos los cuales se sienten como consejos que te da alguien maduro basándose en su experiencia de vida y no como un sermón vacío. La narrativa tiene un ritmo bastante tranquilo que de la mano con su corta duración resulta en un acierto para traer algo sin muchas aspiraciones más que contarte la historia de algo que pasó.

   The same thing happens with the characters as in the previous point, they only seek to represent ordinary people who try to cling to any shred of hope that can help them cope with the complex situation in which both they and the town are submerged, this makes make it easy to identify with them. For their part, Jerry and Marge represent a beautiful couple who have known how to overcome the difficulties that arise in a long-term marriage, this includes the relationships that they have established with their children and the mistakes that they have made as humans; this being precisely what consolidates them as identifiable and pleasant people.

   Con los personajes pasa lo mismo que en el anterior punto, estos solo buscan representar a la gente común que intenta aferrarse a cualquier ápice de esperanza que pueda ayudarles a sobrellevar la situación compleja en la que se encuentran sumidos tanto ellos como el pueblo, esto hace que sea fácil identificarte con ellos. Por su parte Jerry y Marge representan una pareja linda que ha sabido anteponerse a las dificultades que se presentan ante un matrimonio longevo, en esto van incluidas las relaciones que estos han ido estableciendo con sus hijos y en los errores que estos han cometido como humanos; siendo precisamente esto lo que los consolida como personas identificables y agradables.

   
   

   

   
   

   Jerry & Marge Go Large is a cute movie that has good emotional and comic moments in equal parts, although it doesn't aspire to something deeper than the fact of telling you a story of everyday life, it knows how to make good use of its simple elements to keep you entertained to the viewer. It is for all this that it deserves 3.5 stars out of 7, a tape with a beautiful message that is pleasant to see at least once.

   Jerry & Marge Go Large es una película linda que tiene buenos momentos emotivos y cómicos a partes iguales, si bien no aspira a algo más profundo que el hecho de contarte una historia de la vida cotidiana sabe hacer buen uso de sus elementos simples para mantener entretenido al espectador. Es por todo ello que merece 3.5 estrellas de 7, una cinta con un mensaje bonito que resulta agradable para ver por lo menos una vez.

   Since I can remember I like the classes that are related to logic and analysis, I can say that I enjoyed studying physics and mathematics, I'm not a gifted with an IQ of 200, but I defended myself enough to get good qualifications and never reprobate, thanks to this feeling was that the movie Jerry and Marge caught my attention, knowing that it was about the events of a man who thanks to his great mathematical skills was able to determine the odds of winning the lottery and get millions of dollars for it.

   Desde que tengo memoria me gustan las cátedras que tienen que ver con la lógica y el análisis, puedo decir que disfrute estudiar fisica y matematicas, no soy un superdotado con un IQ de 200, pero me defendía lo suficiente para obtener buenas calificaciones y nunca reprobar, gracias a este sentimiento fue que la película de Jerry and Marge llamó mi atención, saber que trataba de los acontecimiento de un hombre que gracias a sus grandes habilidades matemáticas fue capaz de determinar las probabilidades de ganar la loteria y obtener millones de dólares por ello.

   

   I'm sure that you, like me, have heard several times people say that mathematics is not useful for life, questions like "What is the Pythagorean theorem good for in life? And many others of any kind. This film, although it is a real life story, is an answer to such questions, how someone, without cheating, used probabilistic calculations to make money, where luck had nothing to do with it.

   Estoy seguro que ustedes al igual que yo han escuchado varias veces a personas decir que las matemáticas no sirve para la vida, preguntas como ¿para que me sirve el teorema de Pitágoras en la vida? Y como esa muchas otras de cualquier tipo. Esta película que aunque resulta de una historia de la vida real, es una respuesta a tales preguntas, como alguien sin hacer trampas, se valió de cálculos probabilísticos para ganar dinero, donde la suerte no tuvo nada que ver.

   Plot

   Jerry Selbee played by the famous Bryan Cranston, is a skilled man who worked for Kellogg's cereal company for 42 years designing boxes that will help to better preserve the cereal. After so many years of work the company retires him and he is left to spend his remaining "golden years" in his small town in Boston. As time goes by, he begins to get bored and finds no meaning to his life. After many years of routine, he notices a lottery advertisement in a local coffee shop and notices that there is a glitch in the game.

   Jerry Selbee interpretado por el famoso Bryan Cranston, es un hábil hombre que trabajó para la compañía de cereales Kellogg’s por 42 años diseñando cajas que colaborarán a conservar mejor el cereal. Luego de tantos años de trabajo la compañía lo jubila y queda para pasar sus "años dorados" que le restan de vida en su pequeño pueblo de Boston. Con el pasar del tiempo empieza aburrirse y no le encuentra sentido a su vida, tras una rutina de muchos años y en cuando en una cafeteria local al observar una publicidad de loteria, nota que hay un fallo en el juego.

   At some point in the film his wife also gets involved in the process, which triggers a series of positive events that give a new meaning to his life, both travel many miles from the state of Boston to Massachusetts to buy as many lottery tickets, and thanks to these trips they also manages to reconnect as a married couple, but not everything is rosy, also in the process must overcome some challenges, personal and third parties who interfere in the process.

   Opinion

   As I already said, the movie has a great appeal for me, it is a comic drama, which has no loss because it is a story with a happy ending of real life. Its main attraction is the sequence of events that lead them to achieve their goals and how many other people benefit from their discovery. I love the idea that mathematics helped him to make money in this unusual way, I'm sure you and I know someone who spends their life playing these lotteries and gambling as much as they can, trying to find an easy way to make money, but we all know there isn't one.

   Opinión

   Como ya lo dije, la película tiene para mi un gran atractivo, es un drama cómico, que no tiene pérdida alguna porque es una historia con final feliz de la vida real. Su principal atractivo son la secuencia de hechos que los llevan a logran sus objetivos y como muchas otras personas se benefician de su hallazgo. Me encanta la idea de que la matemática le sirvió para ganar dinero de esta manera poco usual, seguro estoy que tanto ustedes como yo conocen alguna persona que se le va la vida gastando dinero jugando estas loterías y apostando en cuanto pueden, tratando de encontrar un camino fácil para hacer dinero, pero todos sabemos que no lo hay.

It is a simple movie of an hour and a half especially to see it with the family, my children saw it with me and it filled them with emotion because they knew how to give it their touches of humor and drama, it is quite relaxing and with a good ending.

   Esta historia tiene muchos detalles, bien pueden ver la pelicula o si son habidos lectores pueden leer el articulo original el cual relata toda la historia y sobre la cual se baso la pelicula, acá les dejo el enlace por si les interesa saber mas. Es una película sencilla de una hora y media especial para verla en familia, mis hijos la vieron conmigo y les llenó de emoción porque bien supieron darle sus toques de humor y drama, es bastante relajante y con un buen final.
