Hello friends, today I was checking Netflix and this recommendation appeared to me, I didn't stop much to read or look at what it was about, I decided to trust blindly, so much so that I didn't know it was Korean, I'm surprised because nowadays Korean films and dramas are very popular, and they're not bad.

Let's see, Jung_E. We are introduced to the film by saying that in the near future the sea level rises due to climate change and because of that humanity is forced to move into space, they built more than 80 shelters between the earth and the moon orbital planes. They tell us it was a migration over decades and over time some havens start to have disagreements and some even end up attacking other havens, including one that is also on earth, this makes them have been at war for decades, so much so that the refugees from earth have had to manufacture munitions to live like cogs in a war machine.

Veamos, Jung_E.

This is how this film was introduced to us, from there it begins and we are taken to a kind of battle, we see a woman in a field fighting with a species of robots, we see her fighting with everything she has until at one point we see that is attacked and seems to lose two fingers, at that point we realize that it is a robot, also because it seems to turn off at that moment, we think that it will be the end of that robot but to our surprise, it turns out that we were watching a training , and nothing was real. We see how the scientists leave the laboratory to examine the robot and investigate what has happened, at the same time that they show us that they are trying to replicate this robot and make a mass production.

From here we can determine that the film is going to focus on this character, in addition to the fact that it bears her name. In the next scene we will know where the creation of this robot came from and it really existed, she was a mercenary, she was an excellent fighter who won all the wars she fought until she was injured in a bombardment and left in a coma, as a result of that scientists they decided to replicate her brain and turn all of that into data by taking the best of her combat and tactical knowledge to develop the best combat AI.

The first half of the film seems to be still preparing us to meet this character, since there are more fragments that explain who this robot was, Yun Jungyi, it is the original name of the woman in whom they are trying to replicate their abilities, the story tells us account approximately 40 years ago she had to go on a mission but before that, she was saying goodbye to her daughter who was going to undergo an operation, her daughter told her that she had to come back when she woke up, the next thing that happened was that after the girl recovers from surgery, they tell her grandmother that her mother had been left in a coma and that she had to sign some documents to avoid brain death, but they were also documents that gave her the legal rights to use her entire body and image to a company, this is how a company managed to try to replicate it, plus 40 years later her daughter is the researcher who is working on the project, so she tries to do everything possible to who knows what happened that day that she fell into a coma.

I thought the movie was going to be something rude with a lot of action but that's not really the thing, I found it interesting, it is indeed a science fiction movie, it's more like watching and analyzing, it's fine for a movie Sunday, I don't think that as boring as most of the movies that came out last year, it's hard to get anything decent to watch these days, as our expectations are raised especially when we're always presented with more of the same.

So, I only present this option, you decide if you want to add it to your list

  2. Jung_E and M3gan Artificial Intelligences in recent movies that managed to strike fear into my heart / Jung_E y M3gan Inteligencias Artificiales en peliculas recientes que lograron en el fondo que sienta miedo.@nbarrios671250d

This weekend I saw two movies that managed to transmit me a feeling of nervousness, threat and danger, I would not define them as horror or terror movies, but as science fiction movies.

    Source

The first one is called Jung_E, and is about the training of a soldier that could put an end to years of conflict in a Civil War, the detail is that this is an artificial intelligence of combat in which the brain of a legendary fighter who is in a coma has been cloned. One of the leaders of the project is the daughter of the aforementioned warrior.

    Source

The second movie I saw is called M3gan, and is the story of a girl who loses her parents and is left under the guardianship of her aunt, a developer of technological toys in a well-known toy company. This one, overwhelmed by her work, decides that one of her developments (a doll called M3gan), accompanies her niece. M3gan is practically a robot, an artificial intelligence that learns as it socializes with the girl, and is able to interconnect with the internet and any other artificial intelligence.

    [Source](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8760708/mediaviewer/rm2489137153/)

These artificial intelligences can identify human language, process, analyze and understand images and are able to learn a task and improve their performance based on previous experiences.

In both films it is possible to see the simulations that are made for these beings to maximize their potential.

I can say that these films are entertaining, but beyond whether the films are good or bad we find the malicious use of the results of artificial intelligence. In Jung_E we see how they want to exploit this intelligence as a weapon, claiming that it will end the war, however it is possible to observe that in these simulations the artificial intelligence is able to feel anger, calm, pain and frustration, and at the same time to have memories that were implanted in it.

In M3gan, we see how irresponsibly, in the beginning, the tutor of a girl leaves the responsibility of teaching and guiding a little girl to an artificial intelligence in the form of a doll that learns from humans and comes to think that there is no difference between them and her, that is to say, it manages to become aware of itself.

I am a person who believes that human beings possess an intangible part that gives us the ability to think and feel, is capable of giving life to the organism that defines the individual and humanity, called soul.

Artificial intelligences, for now, do not have souls, but I see today that they have the ability to perform heavy work, write texts, make visual works and music, all very surprising, but made on the basis of algorithms making us question many times who is the author, and if this artificial intelligence has creativity and inspiration which is very characteristic of us humans.

For now, and only for now, these artificial intelligences do not have emotions nor do they try to communicate anything, they have no motivation. When we see the work of an Artificial Intelligence, it is because we humans show it to the world.

These cinematographic works made me feel fear for what is to come, because I see that they are reflecting future technologies capable of displacing the human being and doing us a lot of harm if they fall into the wrong hands. We are far from implanting thoughts and memories in artificial intelligences, but with concern I see that it is possible for a machine to achieve feedback and learn but with the lack of a soul that is what guides us humans to distinguish between good and bad. I do not believe that a human being can replicate the soul.

Often, the seventh art makes us reflect and even manages to bring out emotions and feelings.

Greetings to all and see you next time.

    [Source](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt22352848/mediaviewer/rm215956737/)

  3. I saw Jung_E and these are my impressions.@nbarrios671251d

Thanks to global warming in the 22nd century part of the planet Earth is uninhabitable, so humans decide to build space colonies, but some of these colonies are proclaimed as a republic called Adrian, initiating attacks with robots and mercenaries to the rest of colonies and to some places on Earth.

    Source

The Allied Republic to end years of conflict is developing a perfect soldier, a combat artificial intelligence by cloning the brain of an ancient and legendary fighter in a coma. This project is in the phase of simulations, until it reaches an absolutely perfect level.

All this is told to us at the beginning of the film where we see pure, frenetic action and a machine-like, futuristic setting. Thus we enter into context in a story that initially presents echoes of several films we have already seen as Terminator, Matrix, Robocop, Universal Soldier, Ghost in the Shell, I Robot, Ex Machina and to a lesser extent Blade Runner.

From this point on the action slows down presenting us with an intimate drama in conjunction with moral dilemmas. What happens is that the warrior they use to get a deadly weapon is Jung_E (Kim Hyn-hoo), and one of the developers of the experiment is her daughter Seo Hyun (Kang Soo-yeon).

In the film we never see the space colonies, or the war conflict, this is where the film begins to be reiterative initially we are explained the context of the war, this happens again when through a video we are given the same explanation, also later, Dr. Seo Hyun tells one of his colleagues a story that afflicted him in the past and soon after that is shown in a flashback.

    Source

Scientific experimentation and family traumas are mixed, finding a philosophical side between the distinction between human and artificial and even a kind of test to differentiate humans from robots is present, along with the generation of a conscience in an artificial intelligence that can make it show some sign of feelings such as pain, frustration, anger and calm. The action and fight scenes are shot in a dynamic way, with acceptable CGI and outstanding fight choreography.

Kim Hyn-joo as Jung_E is a competent action heroine, but she does not have an excessive presence in the film, Kang Soo-yeon her scientist daughter faces really serious decisions and events, but in the end she ends up showing a character that reflects neither the rebellion, nor the inner struggle that she should.

    Source

Ryu Kyung-soo (Sang-hoo ) is the director of the laboratories that develop the artificial intelligence project. He is a buffoonish character, who in a script twist transforms his somewhat light-hearted behavior into a more violent and macabre one.

The film is directed by Yeon Sang-hol, responsible for the successful and praised Train to Busan. Kang Soo Yeon who stars as Seo Hyun in the film passed away at the age of 55 on May 7, 2022 due to a heart attack, so the film is dedicated to her.

More than for the story it tells, which is weighed down by a weak and underdeveloped script, the film is sustained by the excellent performances of its cast, and its fight scenes. It is a pity that the film did not delve deeper into the history of Artificial Intelligence, and how it was able to show some feelings.

It is a film that fulfills its mission to make its viewers have a good time, and that is why I recommend watching it, but I think that the subject matter could have given more with a better written script.

Thank you very much for stopping by and appreciating this publication.

  4. Jung_E (netflix movie review)@roadstories1253d

Greetings guys, happy Sunday off for all of you. Last 20th a Korean movie that I had my eye on for a long time was released. I had a pretty good feeling with the trailer and of course I activated my netflix bell to let me know when it was released.

Kang Soo-yeon RIP.

Before I tell you about my experience with it, I should note that the co-star of this plot passed away earlier this year after filming the movie, so this AI piece has been dedicated to her. Kang Soo-yeon RIP.

Now, here the first thing I can say is that I always love the Korean's special effects for action plots. Although technology advances and makes our lives easier, there comes a point that in my opinion is kind of scary, especially in the way it is used.

Here it is necessary because a civil war breaks out and the earth has run out of essential resources for human survival. Colonies of ships are created in space, but they are attacked and invaded.

In search of liberation from the war, the human race through an AI project takes the data of a woman who was an essential and important element for the confrontation.

Among the multiple tests you can notice the suffering of the AI, it is as if a human part is together with it even though it is built entirely as a robot. However, her adjustments allow her to feel and even change her mind since her brain is exactly the same as the real data of her real carrier.

There is a scene where the real woman is shown to be inside a machine with sensory connectors that allows her to be in sync with the created brain. Of course, aged by time, but we see what technological advances are capable of in the preservation of important information.

The plot is also involved with the feelings of a mother towards a sick daughter, because just when she is about to be operated on, she is given what has been her last mission.

It is not made a secret at any time that the person in charge of carrying out Jung_E's project is the daughter, and in a way it is a tribute to her mother to try to put an end to what had begun many years ago, the end of the war.

However, we see that human decadence is always one step ahead and seeing that there is no progress in the tests, they try to give a rather grotesque commercial use to the AI of her mother.

There is a point where we don't know who is human and who is robot. Mostly because of the behavior and decision making of some. What was supposed to be respect and admiration turns into a feeling of disgust and disappointment in the face of lies and manipulation.

In view of this the daughter of cadet IA makes a plan to give her mother freedom. At that moment feelings and reasons come to the surface which in a way destroys the soul.

There is a scene of rage, crying and guilt that can make you feel identified and that is what I like. We see at the end that despite having metallic fibers and a brain full of receptors, still the human essence can cross the barriers of technology and evolve.

It's a real pity that the co-protagonist has passed away, it's the second time I've seen her act and she really transmits a serenity transformed into a chaos that made my skin crawl.

  5. 'JUNG_E' by Yeon Sang-ho Review: An attempt at the cyberpunk genre@namiks1254d

    vlcsnap-2023-01-20-20h23m44s865.png

Lately you may have noticed that I haven't had a lot of faith in streaming services, particularly Netflix as it seeks to create an endless wave of series only to cancel them at any given moment if it isn't some major global hit. I mentioned that I actively avoid original content for this reason, though since a film can't be cancelled, I sometimes decide to give them a chance. Well, I stumbled across Korea's JUNG_E yesterday and was intrigued by the fact that its director was none other Yeon Sang-ho, who some may recognise from the hit that was Train to Busan; and lesser known for the terrible franchised entries that followed in its sad shadow.

Due to his ability to direct well, and with a cyberpunk theme, I was very curious. But also incredibly cautious as to how it may turn out. A Netflix original, from that director, and a cyberpunk genre film in these recent times. Typically a recipe for disaster! Cyberpunk films themselves being few and far between, often requiring a lot of attention to the genre's themes, and the high technology aspect of it often results in an overuse of special effects. That is so say that somewhere, very quickly, cyberpunk films tend to go south. Mostly a result of Hollywood's grasp on the production, ensuring it ticks all of the boxes while not becoming too expensive. Budget naturally going to special effects teams which still cheapen out a bit due to insanely expensive nature of them.

While I ignored all media attention the film was getting, I knew from the cover what type of film it would be. With a vague idea of what to expect from a more modern South Korean blockbuster. Perhaps not as Americanised as Hollywood, but definitely still maintaining its influences. It's a weird thing to admit, but I have noticed that South Korea's cinema has boomed, to a degree that its quality is started to diminish. And truthfully, JUNG_E felt very safe. Too safe.

    JUNG_E

    vlcsnap-2023-01-20-21h30m20s780.png

To dive into things, I would say that JUNG_E is just Korea's version of Ghost in the Shell, but without the strong worldbuilding and segments that come from it. Only sometimes hinting at the greater world that it quickly pulls you into, always making you want to see more. We see glimpses of its world, a large, very shaped city. Incredibly vertical as it reaches into the sky. It reminded me a bit of a tidier Kowloon Walled City. But we don't get much depth to it, only the same perspectives during the travels towards the city by some skyrail. This was the film's first mistake. One that made it increasingly difficult to connect with as it came to the more emotional aspects.

To add to this, JUNG_E certainly remembers that there is the corporate side of the cyberpunk genre, of which it surrounds itself for a good portion of its relatively short runtime. While starting off with the action and social effects, JUNG_E sort of takes off at the start, lands, and then sort of does nothing until the end. Where even there its conclusion feels void of depth. The dialogue in such corporate scenes feels strange, not all that impactful on the story. Particularly as certain aspects of it come into play and we see the story starting to hint elsewhere. It quickly becomes a story of a mother and daughter, but again as mentioned with a lot of similarities to Ghost in the Shell. It is disappointing given the film has some good visuals. The directing certainly isn't bad at all. I quite enjoyed it for a cyberpunk themed film. The lighting is pretty good, and the special effects, while in some areas a bit off, are more than enough. Though such scenes are typically where the action can be found, and the result is that these scenes become rather repetitive, particularly after the first opening scene in which the majority of the film's action and impressive sequences take place. It is then where it falls as it takes a shift and tries to be more human and emotional with its story.

JUNG_E then fails to do anything more with its themes. The futuristic aspect of it is quickly lost. Still present, but without depth as nothing is really approached in regards to its ideas of transhumanism. There are no philosophical or big questions to be asked regarding its main theme, and while I can argue that it isn't necessary, it should have been present for the corporate, more sluggish dialogue. To bridge the ideas it has with its characters and give us a bit more to care about. While I won't post major spoilers, the film does attempt to give us a little bit of humanity, something to potentially care for. But things feel empty, too fast (despite the slow dialogue) and ultimately very lackluster. There definitely was an attempt made, but perhaps one that just juggled too many things at once. I almost feel the film should have been made into a small series. Six to eight episodes would have been enough to flesh things out. And while I typically love shorter films, I don't feel it was done all that well. As if it was hinting that it wanted to do more, but just had been condensed down massively. Budget issues, perhaps?

    Final thoughts

    vlcsnap-2023-01-20-21h30m50s835.png

I definitely didn't hate the film. JUNG_E was a fresh attempt at some harder science fiction with a decent budget. Some good, cool action directed quite well. With some cyberpunk themes in the start that I would've loved to have seen more of. Who doesn't love giant mecha animals? And for once I feel I can say that a cyberpunk film, one that is modern, actually looked good. The visuals were the least of its issues. But sadly it was depth within its story that inevitable came to bring it down. And that's a normal aspect of the cyberpunk genre; the curse of never getting all you'd like. You get the great visuals and sound, or you get the great themes. You never really get both.

However, I still feel that the show would have worked wonderfully as a miniseries. One single season. A short number of episodes just to give the world more depth and more for the audience to care about. For a film regarding family and transhumanism, it was more empty shell than Ghost in the Shell. But if you like the cyberpunk genre and want to check out something new, this is it. There's definitely a few things here to make you happy. I know I had the most fun with its opening scene.
