I’ve learnt quickly enough to lean on reviews. Frankly, I think the best way to ruin a film for yourself before you even see it is to read reviews. And that’s because you would then see it from a viewpoint other than yours and find faults and flaws in the movie through the eyes of others. Flaws that you may not have spotted yourself on a good day. You’re biased. It all goes south. I didn’t read the reviews but I saw the IMDb ratings before I saw the film itself. And I hoped it wouldn’t change the way I felt about the film.
Men In Black: International (2019)
Molly Wright (Tessa Thompson) witnesses aliens in her home in the year 1996. She witnesses the neuralyzation of her parents and manages to escape neuralyzation herself. Twenty three years late and after several rejections from governmental agencies because of her alien views, she tracks an alien landing to the Men In Black headquarters and sneaks in. She is caught and nearly thrown from the premises but after making an impression on the head, she’s recruited on the name, Agent M.
Agent M is assigned to the MIB London branch and is paired with Agent H (Chris Hemsworth) on a top secret mission. They meet aliens and twins with special powers. Agent M upon warning doesn’t trust Agent T bit realizes that they’re better off when they work as a team. What they’re up against is far greater than their combined powers, but they’re determined to make it work. Just one of them, at least.
My Thoughts and Rating
The first film in the MIB franchise is my best. And I’m figuring this may be the case of a lot of people. Excellent storyline. Excellent cast. Unique taste. And an even more amazing delivery. So, if you’re going to be comparing this to that masterpiece, of course it will fall short. In many ways.
So, I decided to simply see the film for what it was and not be too hasty in my judgement. The storyline was okay. Quite predictable but Hollywood movies stopped being unpredictable ages ago. I was surprised by a few twists and turns in the film so that’s at least good. I wasn’t expecting much. But the film, although not nearly as good as the original was quite delightful.
I love the chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. I’m sure it must have been clocked in on how great their partnership is from Ragnarok, which was a lovely watch indeed. Chemistry between casts is necessary because how else are you going to do it?
Their wise cracks and jokes had a lot of life to them because they’re most likely comfortable with each other. What I love is how they don’t try to force any romantic connections between them in their movies, which was refreshing to me because the male and female leads don’t always have to fall in love.
So yeah, this film had a 3.1/5 ratings from IMDb. Incredibly low but after seeing it, I agreed that the low ratings must have just been from people expecting the movie to beat the original. Lol. I would personally give it a good 6.5/10 but that’s just me. It was one of the better films I watched in 2019 but quite forgettable indeed.
