Before seeing this film, although I had heard a little of Elton John's music, this title has made me see and hear with another perspective the music of this great artist. The film was released in 2019. Being its director Dexter Fletcher.

For the 120-something minutes that the film lasts, he considers it very complete, telling a lot about the artist and what his life was like. His addictions, his problems with his parents, his innate ability for music, his love affairs, etc. In what is being told, there are several parts that turn into a musical where several of Elton John's hits are played with different choreographies. Some better than others. For my part, I think both the Rocketman and Cocodrile Rock parts are excellent, impressive.

I think that at least in the plot part, the story is well told, dynamic, leaving no time to get bored. If anything, there are stretches that don't tell how she went from one state to another, as in the part of her marriage, making it a bit irrelevant.

A good job on the costumes, managing to permeate the era, having a life of its own with Elton John. Taron Egerton's work as the protagonist is good, standing out in the parts where the music takes flight.

In conclusion, it's a good movie, a fairly complete biopic with his greatest hits. If you like Elton John or want to know the life of a great musical artist, you can't miss it.

  2. Rocketman: Even he is still standing (2019) Review [Eng - Esp]@stairway2heaven1659d

Yesterday in my free time, I set out to look for a movie on Netflix that caught my attention, I did not really feel like watching a series and I wanted to go out of the conventional and see something perhaps striking, I discussed this situation with a friend and he recommended me several alternatives, But curiously, most of those movies I had already seen (movies that maybe at some point I should talk about), however, he mentioned me one in particular which is the one I will talk about today called Rocketman, the title is certainly striking but he told me in a very summarized way that it was a movie that narrated the life of Elton John. Personally if I knew of the existence of this musician as well as his presentation, in some movies (like the second Kingsman) and that is a very recognized individual, but until then I never got to call attention to his music or look for songs about him or his life nothing more and well certainly caught my attention by the cover on Netflix, so I gave it a chance.

The truth is that it was quite emotional and very emotionally charged a lot and not only that there is a background, linked entirely to a search for parental acceptance and also social, I had no idea that this guy had gone through so much, and I admit that some of his songs I liked quite a bit, but I will delve into it later as well as the impact of his music on me and especially that process he had to go through, to be what he is today or was to some extent because I understand he retired to devote more time to his family, so without further ado this time I bring you Rocketman.

Rocketman is a British musical film which is based on the life of Elton Johns, is a film distributed by Paramount Pictures and released in 2019, both in the United Kingdom (May 22) and the United States (May 31). The film was directed by Dexter Fletcher.

A curious fact about the production of the film is that the project was on hold for some time, since summarizing the life of the artist can be complicated due to the radical and excessive life he had due to alcohol, sex and drugs, until an agreement was reached with the Pramounts studio so that it could be distributed.

    Synopsis / Sinopsis

Our story begins with Elton John entering a rehabilitation room in various addictions, with a kind of demon costume very extravagant as well as quirky, to take a seat and communicate openly with others, we can then see as viewers in retrospect his life and everything that has happened until that precise moment in such actuality.

    Personal opinion / Opinión personal

I personally liked the movie very much, I will try to touch on the most outstanding aspects that for me had a significant impact on the process and growth that Elton had. As I mentioned at the beginning in the introduction I did not know much about this artist and obviously his music, but I did not want to be rude to my friend with his recommendation and the truth is that it came out better than I expected, returning to Elton was very hard but very hard for him, not being able to express himself and be himself in so many areas, and having to adapt to a musical world in which there are so many pleasures linked to fame and power, which brings with it addictions and above all the hidden intentions of the people in it on his person.

The music for him was the biggest impulse he had to get noticed in that world, I feel that he strongly sought that means not only to make himself known and noticed in his own way, but also to finally receive acceptance or approval from his family (mainly his mother or father and stepfather) in the most genuine way possible, In the film is a factor that is constantly shown, the low valuation to him both for his flamboyant personality and his sexual orientation, even in the musical environment of which on many occasions came out very bad by the criticism of others including their representatives either in criticism as already mentioned or manipulation.

Such choices, pushed him to take such an excessive and radical lifestyle in many aspects, and we have to remember that such events occur in a different time in which many things at first instance were very frowned upon and quite controversial and what he represented was no exception, It was as his music had a great impact (music of which there are certain songs that I liked) that he began to accept and identify with it, leaving behind the old him to transcend and become what he is now, but to reach that point of acceptance both in self-love and in knowing how to ask for help he had to go through many things.

One of the things in the making of this film that I liked, was the exposure of his life, mainly in very remarkable events that shows us what he has gone through, through a kind of catharsis in the rehabilitation center with others, for me it was an introduction and denouement linked to the continuity of the plot very but very good and see the end result of all that process that happened to get to what it is now, essentially with each song was amazing, as a kind of fall and rise and really goes very consistent.

Personally I highly recommend it, there are very sensitive issues that are touched and I think they should be taken into consideration as tolerance, respect and acceptance mainly, the film has some strong and somewhat crazy scenes, but not losing its charm is not bad and especially if you manage to have empathy, enough with his situation believe me it will hit you very hard emotionally, by the way his best friend Bernye is a great brother. Thanks for coming and reading this far and see you next time.

  3. Spoiler-free review of "Rocketman"@herosik1844d

    Rocketman ENG oku.jpg

In the past, I rarely watched movies or series that only served to fill my free time. Mainly because I usually watch what either interests me or has a very interesting trailer. Rarely do I have an "I have nothing to watch so I'll see what they show on TV". I always have different series, anime, or movies - depending on my emotional state or the amount of free time. Since I found my better half, I watch movies more often, which either I did not have in the "plan to watch" tab or they were so far away that I would probably never watch them by myself - because every year such films come to my P2W and I don't remember most of them 5-10 years ago. Usually, I don't have much to say about such productions, which is why I decided to restore the type of text that I rarely post on the blog - recommendations. Not only will you find movies (although they are mostly), but also some anime or series that I liked, but I am not able to write a longer text about them (or I find it unnecessary). The texts will be compact, specific, without dragging - only concrete facts. At least in theory, because I will expand some topics a bit more.

    Ro1.jpg

Let me start with a title that captivated me for exactly the same reasons as "The Social Network". Those of you who know me from outside the blog or have been following it for several years know that honesty and lack of censorship (or at least in most things, because some things are better left unsaid) are some of the most important factors for me. Both in the case of interpersonal relationships and getting to know a certain title. It is known that every person has their privacy and could do things that they are ashamed of in front of the world and themselves, so I do not always require 100% truth, especially when we are not dealing with an evidently bad person, institution or situation. I do not like powdering reality and pretending that certain events did not happen or presenting them in a one-dimensional way - justifying or demonizing the page depending on the narrative (in terms of texts, videos, personal opinions of private people who are not public figures, what another). It is different in situations that are more or less known - such as, for example, toxic traits of people that cannot be hidden (in the case of Elton John or Mark Zuckerberg). My attitude towards Elton John can be described more or less like this - neither cold nor warm. He is a great artist and musician, which I appreciated only on the occasion of this film (because I did not pay attention to him before, as with many artists, I knew that he was talented, but I did not know what it resulted from, why he was given such a title), but never I was not a fan of his work and it is unlikely to change. Yes, I liked his songs a lot, like "I'm Still Standing", this song for "Lion King" or a few others that I only "got to know" on the occasion of this film, but they didn't charm me enough to play them instead of synthwave, Eurobeat, metal, hard rock or techno. Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly a great piece of music that defends itself despite enormous competition and the passage of time.

    Ro2.jpg

Once, Rafał Ziemkiewicz (for readers from outside Poland - a right-wing publicist, sometimes he talks nonsense, sometimes is a hypocrite, but just as often has accurate or at least worth considering observations, I would not call him an idiot) said about artists, musicians, actors, art creators in general, that if they don't have a traumatic childhood or unpleasant experiences, they are often boring or unattractive. Whether it is so, I do not know, there must be some greater or lesser truth in it. I conclude this at least because poverty, the above-mentioned negative experiences, or other similar factors give a person a greater chance of being successful. It seems to me that this is due to a stronger feeling of hunger in the pursuit of success or wealth, or the fact that they quickly understood and assimilated the lesson that in the world you rarely get a gift from fate (don't confuse this with a specialist or was lucky in childhood to choose a hobby - e.g. IT specialists, who currently earn PLN 10-20 thousand per month compared to PLN 2-4 thousand for me and most of my colleagues) and it is often hard to earn for it. The perfect example of this is Elton John - a sensitive man with a head full of ideas about creating music and creating an amazing show that did not have a light childhood. Not only was there not much love in his house (either towards him or his mother), but he was also treated like a freak by his father. He despised him so much that he disowned him. Not in a literal way, but even worse - he showed him less than a minimum of interest, pretended he didn't know him, generally treated him like an underprivileged schoolmate who would most likely be told to fuck off the house, but he did not do it out of courtesy and deeply rooted, Catholic rules. Why am I saying it's even worse this way? Because I also experienced some unpleasant behaviors from my family + I know the experiences of my peers, colleagues, famous people. It is better for someone to tell you what it is like instead of pretending otherwise. This is worse in the very beginning, but after a shorter or longer period of time, a person gets to their feet or at least a clear situation, rather than stuck in a limbo full of false hope or insecurity.

    Ro3.jpg

    Ro4.jpg

Referring to the previous paragraph, "Rocketman" is very honest on this point. It shows in a painful way what Elton experienced in his childhood and how it influenced his life, as well as does not hide the negative qualities of this man. Throughout his childhood, he is self-centered, cannot cope with emotions, abuses drugs, generally tries to cut himself off from his previous life as much as possible. Some transsexual, non-binary people, etc., do the same. I do not judge this attitude, although to be honest, for most of my life I saw some (I mean extreme cases) of this type of behavior as sick quirks. Including Thanks to this video, I understood why they do it and why the assessment of such behavior is often bad. Often it does not mean always, because, as "Rocketman" has shown, when escaping the past, you can fall into exaggeration the other way, fall into a state of learned helplessness or think that "I'm good, the whole world is bad". Elton experienced it in a more or less painful way at several stages in his life, and probably even more often than this movie showed. The fact that he is an outstanding individual does not give him the right to do what he wants or to treat people according to his current emotional state. I loved that Elton might not agree to show some embarrassing things in his life, and he didn't. I am not talking about drugs, alcohol, or casual sex - if most (ie, earning enough money to afford it) of people could live like this, they would. As long as such an emotional and entertaining rollercoaster doesn't last too long or you really go overboard, there's nothing wrong in my opinion. Life is a lot of shit, so if it makes anyone happy then go ahead. Or to put it differently, some of these actions were not some outstanding deviation from the norm - after all, even at the last Eurovision one of the musicians took the path of amphetamines, just like one night stands with boys, girls, or getting drunk or mixing alcohol and drugs. However, with some of them, I felt something like embarrassment or cringe, and if I were in Elton's place, I would have some of these scenes shown in a lighter, less compromising way. However, he did not hide it, which made the film gain a lot - it was not another polished biographical production, and it was easier for us to put ourselves in his shoes or understand that theoretically, each of us can achieve success, provided certain conditions are met, of course.

    Ro5.jpg

When it comes to all aspects of the film (script, cinematography, music, editing, directing, actors), I have nothing to complain about. Everything is at least good, and often very good. Apart from the script and the performance of Elton, which I have already written in detail, I liked the "Rocketman" narrative the most. It is not particularly original, I can even call it cliché and repetitive. I don't know what it looks like in new movies about famous musicians or bands, but I've often seen this way of scripting in older productions that I have seen as a young viewer on VHS or on TV. Ie. various clippings from different stages of the artist's life, which were combined into one film by several scenes created in the form of a music video. But here it was done very well - the scenes look effective, the actors played convincingly, and their roles were well and honestly written, they behaved and talked, like most people - in a gray way. As I wrote several times in my texts, few people are almost pure evil or their analogous counterparts on the good side. Even good people have their dark sides, and the bad guys sometimes show their positive side. I especially liked the lead actor, who perfectly captured Elton's rich personality, as well as his publisher - the one who fucked him not only in terms of earnings, but also in bed. I can rate the rest of the game at a good level, at least, nobody played poorly. On the other hand, some may be equal or even better than the two heroes I mentioned. Rocketman is a show worth checking out both as a psychological film and as an entertaining cinema - it works great in both cases. Although I love music and I cannot imagine my life without it, I do not like concerts. I would like to visit only a few of them, I prefer to avoid the rest. In this production, however, I really enjoyed the concerts! They were beautiful, stunning, some of Elton's numbers made a huge impression on me (like leaning on the piano, if that happened) and I didn't think I could have so much fun in such scenes. And I say this as a self-declared hatter of musicals and other films that are based to such a degree on the musical aspect.

    Ro6.jpg

To sum up, before the screening, I was a bit skeptical and at best I thought that I would have a nice and good screening, such as 7, 8/10 maximum. However, my expectations changed as I watched the next scenes. When we finished "Rocketman", I was delighted and regretted that it was only a movie, not a series of several episodes, such as "Vinyl" (I haven't seen it, but I assume after reading the description and name that it is similar at least in terms of the topic). I want more and would love to see more about Elton John. I also hope that there will be more biographical films of this type in the future - less artificial and more realistic, please! My rating is 9/10 with a big heart.

  4. REVIEW : Rocketman (2019) - Movie by Dexter Fletcher@mandibil2540d

Growing up as a kid in the 1970s, to me, Elton John was one of those giant pop icons, that basically every boy and girl had heard of, but not necessarily heard the music of. Yes, Crocodile Rock´s simple appearance as a 50s pastiche, had probably cracked through the airwaves from Radio Luxemburg and entered your ears. But did you actually take time and delve into Elton John´s impressive output of the classic era from 1970 to 1975? No?

Then you are probably a bit like me, who only in a mature age went there - just to discover what I had overlooked, mainly due to prejudice and preconcecptions of John being a sugary pop artist not worthy of serious conciderations. Consider this your intervention then and let me outright tell you not to write of this movie off, "just" because of your musical preferences. It has a lot of things to offer.

    2019-07-15_145326.png

The case of Elton John, despite what people may think of his rock star antics and abuses, is quite unique. He was a lonely boy growing up in a dreary and loveless lower, british middleclass family, attending regular pianolessons from established academies, and from there transformed himself into, probably the best pop artist of the first half of the seventies. This is a story of the most unlikely sorts and just from that alone, a worthy "excuse" for portraying it in a movie.

    2019-07-15_145244.png

    2019-07-15_145259.png

Elton John´s case is also unique from the point of the partneship with his partner "in crime", Bernie Taupin, who wrote most of the lyrics to his songs and an absolutely decisive aspect of the success of the creativity that resulted, particularly in the classic period 70-75.

Bernie had a particularly ambivalent and at times quite brutally passive aggressive style of songwriting, mostly about his own experience with his partnership with "The captain", Elton John, and his at times almost manic-depressive behavior and impossible relations with lovers, bandmates and family.

    2019-07-15_145301.png

    2019-07-15_145308.png

Being a bit of a Elton fan myself, I did know a lot of details about the timeframe in which the movie is taking place and I was not disappointed. The chronology and the plot twists are all basically correct and only adjusted to fit pace and overall storyline.

The movie does take a bold stance from the start. It does not follow your average semi-documentaric biopic, but chooses instead to create an artistic whole, that brings it all into united cohesive story all revolving around the music and Elton´s downward spiralling emotional well. Add to that, the songs are placed in the story and plot line so that the lyrics fit to them, at times frighteningly well, rather than in their respective chronology. A song like "I want Love" was written in the 2000s while used to portray his childhood in the 50s. And it makes perfectly sense.

    2019-07-15_145338.png

    2019-07-15_145341.png

I was a bit surprised at the start fearing that the actors beginning to sing, would turn it all into a crappy sentimental slapstick a la "Mamma Mia" or what is worse. But my fears were completely unfounded.

Instead I was surprised to actually have a fealing of relief and settled back in my theatre chair and just let myself absorb the music and the story. I very early felt, that I was in good hands and about to be both entertained and impressed.

Like Forman does in Amadeus, we get the story told from the point of view of one “protagonist”. In this case it is the center character himself that presents his version, while in Amadeus it is his enemy. This allows for some extra freedom, since it is a subjective version of the story, and not an “objective” documentary. It works well here just as it did in Amadeus.

    2019-07-15_145352.png

    2019-07-15_145359.png

I will try not to reveal too much of the structurte and the choreography as it still runs in theatres, but it is safe to say that it very well crafted. It manages bring both the music, the back story of Elton and Bernie and how they rose to fame, Eltons emotionally destructive family and love raltionsships, his drug and alcohol abuse and more into a both an engaging and entertaining whole. This is quite unparalleled as far as I am concerned, and deserves a lot of praise for achieving this. It is NOT easy to do this, as dozens of lousy biopics in history will point out to you.

    2019-07-15_145402.png

    2019-07-15_145409.png

There are solid acting performance everywhere, no weaknesses. But special mention has to go to Taron Egerton, who plays Elton. He is very impressive and most of the runtime of the movie, nails the behavior and voice of Elton so well it is quite astounding. Not all looks of Elton, hits perfect home, but it is very close, and adding Taron´s ability to both act and sing like Elton, deserves him the highest praise.

I would have liked some more details on Bernie, as his role artistically is very important and the “this is a picture of the real dude now” closing edits, is so annoying. Pleeease let the memory of the actor’s interpretation stand alone.

This is a movie for music lovers and those who like artistic liberty and at times outright expressionist methods to bring out emotional depths, that can not be expressed otherwise, if they need to be entertaining at the same time. My very good recommendations.

  5. Rocket Man – Movie Review@readingdanvers2570d

    Rocketman.jpg

Rocket Man was directed by Dexter Fletcher and stars Taron Egerton as the legendary Elton John. It also stars Jamie Bell playing songwriter Bernie Taupin, Bryce Dallas Howard as Sheila - Elton's mother and Richard Madden (Robb Stark for you Game of Thrones fans) as John Reid. Here is an interesting trivia facts for you, John Reid was played by Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger on Game of Thrones) in Bohemian Rhapsody, too bad that too different studies made the movie, otherwise they could have used the same actor. This movie had everything a movie should have, great performances, great music and a story bigger than life that is worthy of the big screen.

IMDB describes the movie as a "musical fantasy" and I think it is an accurate description. It does and does not play out like a typical biographical movie. It is more like half a biography and half a musical. The plot is made to fit the songs so don't expect the songs to appear in a chronologic order in the movie. It does lend itself to the fantastical elements of the movie. It is just small moments, but trust me you notice them, they are there to emphasize the importance of some events in Elton's life.

The movie follows Elton John from his early childhood to the late 80s. We get to see how incredibly talented he really was from the start. The movie also focuses a lot on his personal life, and his family life. How much damage they caused him, and how he overcame the odds.

It’s easy to forget that he has his happily ever after when you watch the trailer. He is married with two children and has been sober for almost 30 years. I would say that is the major downside of the movie. It is an amazing movie, but it focuses on the negative too much, while the positive gets a small titles after the movie with some information in it. Also, the movie ends in the 80s which means that a lot of important career milestones are left out of the movie.

Taron Egerton does amazing work in this movie. We all know that he is a great singer from Sing where he sang I'm Still Standing by Elton John, what a small world. Yes, the singing in the movie is his, not an Elton John voiceover. Egerton is a fantastic underappreciated actor. He isn't physically similar to Elton John, but he does his best too look like him and the result is fantastic and his performance is electrifying. Everyone does a great job in this movie, but this is Egerton's movie.

I think it is a very cinematic movie. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen with a really good sound system.

  6. Insomniac Trailer Reactions: Rocketman@rvgenaille2826d

I am kind of fascinated by the fact that there are more "not-tentpole" films being made again, kind of a return to mid budget filmmaking in the studio system. At least I hope that's the case.

There also seems to be a move towards more musician biopics.

This one is Rocketman, and it is a biopic of Elton John, starring the guy from the Kingsman franchise. There is very little dialogue in this trailer, a combination of montage and musical fantasy that glimpses his life and challenges. I don't know what to think of it as a result but I think I am intrigued enough to want to see it.
