Netflix has become the platform I use the most; in recent weeks, it’s been a lifesaver when the power goes out, since I can download a movie and watch it. Plus, a wide variety of worthwhile series and movies have been released, many of them with powerful messages, and the animated genre, in particular, continues to surprise. That’s why Swapped recently premiered, with a very interesting premise: two very different creatures swap lives, and in that switch, there will be laughter, adventures, and the chance to learn to embrace new experiences. All of this creates a plot that’s perfect for all ages and is sure to make you laugh.

What I liked about this movie is that everything is so colorful—from the forests and mountains to the creatures—and it all looks so real, making the film visually appealing and transporting us to a world of animals that has so much to offer and so much to give.

The characters are all animals with distinct voices, each with their own personality; they live in rival communities, and when they come together, everything changes. This allows the adventure to unfold, starting from chaos and evolving into a great, inspiring story—all with that touch of humor that’s a must in this kind of animated film, offering both laughs and moments that evoke empathy.

This is a fairly short film, and one area where it could certainly have been improved is by including more action sequences, since the plot rarely takes you by surprise. Even so, it’s a fun, entertaining, and visually appealing film for all ages, as it stays true to the essence of the genre without trying to change it—it simply lets you enjoy a story about animals in the forest.

After a friend posted a short clip of this animated film on her WhatsApp status, I was inclined to watch it because I couldn’t resist such color and wonder! You know, animated films have this habit of looking childish on the surface but then, it randomly sneaks emotional damage into your chest when you least expect it.

    Synopsis

    IMG_5473.jpeg

Set in a magical valley filled with strange hybrid creatures, Swapped follows Ollie (voiced by Michael B. Jordan), a small woodland creature called a Pookoo, and Ivy (voiced by Juno Temple), a majestic bird-like creature known as a Javan. The two species are natural enemies, constantly avoiding and distrusting each other.

    IMG_5468.jpeg

But after a magical accident involving mysterious flower pods, Ollie and Ivy suddenly find themselves forced into each other’s worlds, literally and emotionally. Both of them are irritated by their new look but, they think of survival for their families and embrace their new identities, and learning to understand as they journey across dangerous parts of the valley trying to reverse what happened.

    IMG_5469.jpeg

Along the way, they encounter strange creatures, hidden truths about the valley, and a shocking secret tied to Boogle (voiced by Tracy Morgan), whose role in the story turns out to be much shocking than expected.

    My Thoughts on This One

    IMG_5456.jpeg

The first thing I noticed was that this film is beautiful. The animation is lush, colorful, and filled with tiny environmental details that make the creatures world feel alive. The valley genuinely feels like somewhere you could get lost in. And honestly, that visual style carried a lot of the film’s charm. Even if you’re not fully impressed by the story, you’ll praise the world-building and animation.

    IMG_5459.jpeg

The creature designs are adorable. The Pookoos especially had me like yeah, merchandising is definitely coming.

About the story, subjectively, it isn’t a trailblazer. The message about empathy and understanding those different from you is very obvious. Like, very obvious. The film doesn’t exactly trust you to figure things out yourself but it still worked for me. Because underneath the predictable setup is a surprisingly sincere emotional core. Watching Ollie and Ivy slowly move from fear and annoyance to genuine care felt natural enough that I ended up rooting for them.

    IMG_5466.jpeg

Also, some moments do hit emotionally, especially later in the film when certain truths about the valley and Boogle are revealed. I won’t spoil it, but I actually understand why my friend who posted the clip said the twist shocked her.

    IMG_5475.jpeg

The voice acting? Trust me, everyone understood the assignment. Michael B. Jordan was honestly really charming here. Ollie could have become annoying very quickly, but Jordan in my opinion, gave him enough warmth to keep him lovable. And Juno Temple gave Ivy this slightly elegant, emotionally guarded personality that balanced Ollie’s chaotic energy really well.

    IMG_5471.jpeg

Even Tracy Morgan surprised me because Boogle starts off feeling comedic and unserious before the story slowly reveals there’s more going on underneath.

    IMG_5460.jpeg

Now what didn’t fully work for me was that parts of the film felt too familiar. You can clearly see influences from movies like Zootopia, The Wild Robot, and other creatures learning to coexist animated films. And because of that, some scenes felt predictable before they even happened. The dialogue also leans very young at times. There’s not a lot of subtlety. Everything is explained very directly, which works just perfectly for kids but leave older viewers wanting something sharper. Don’t say the films weren’t created for adults too. lol IMG_5453.jpeg Still, I never got bored, and I guess that’s what matters. Finally, I am sure Netflix, when producing this had no intention to reinvent animation, but trust that it has enough heart, charm, and visual beauty to make the journey worth it. It’s cute and emotional in parts. Despite its predictable themes, it still feels sincere.

Additionally, any animated movie that can make me care about magical woodland creatures arguing in a glowing forest deserves some credit 😭

Rating: 7.5/10 I do recommend for the family.
