   Last weekend, I had the chance to see a film with my Dad. It had been a minute since we did that and with everyone otherwise occupied in other parts of the house, we found a station playing a film he absolutely adored. My Dad is a huge fan of Morgan Freeman and he said the year this film was acted was a pivotal year in his life, so yeah, we turned up the volume and settled to see this cinematic masterpiece .

   The Bucket List (2007)

   Two elderly men meet for the first time at a hospital where they’ve both been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Carter who is a mechanic and Edward who is a billionaire and also the owner of the hospital they are in. The two of them discover common ground as they talk about their lives, their joys in life and their regrets. Carter playfully makes a bucket list of things to do before he dies but discards it when he finds out that he has just a year to live.

   Edward finds this list and urges him to do everything on the list, promising to fund the financial expense. Reluctantly, Carter agrees, and with Edward who adds his own items to the list, they begin traipsing around the world, and ticking off items on their bucket list. With shared stories and disclosed confidences, these two try to make the most out of their time together as the clock of life ticks steadily but surely against them.

   Just as much as you would laugh watching this, you’ve got to also have a box of tissues nearby. This movie is laced with so many heartfelt scenes that just leave you clutching your chest as tears roll down your cheek. I was drawn to all the lights and colours. First off, masterful direction by Robert Reiner and Justin Zackham also delivered a flawless script. It is predictable, especially if you seen it now instead of the almost two decades ago it was created, but it still does not leave you frustrated.

   The casting for this movie was just sublime. Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson delivered in a way that only a natural does. At some point, you almost forget that these people are actors and just get lost in how into it they are, their chemistry and all. The family guy, Carter and the cynical billionaire divorcee, Edward. Their personalities are distinct just as their beliefs in life but they manage to make their friendship work in the best ways possible.

   The movie is filled with fun, laughter, faith, trust, family and most of all, friendship. It is a brilliant piece if you want to a cinematic bonding with family and friends. I certainly had that with my Dad. I do understand, however, that this subject as it borders cancer is quite a touchy one and people may find all the humour in it offensive, as the illness is no fun-fair. It honestly depends on how you see it and what you hope to draw from it. Hope, guilt or despair. Hope you enjoy!

   Morgan Freedman at 86 years old has a great artistic career, bringing to the screen memorable, enigmatic and diverse characters, from trainer, convict, CIA Chief, to God in All Mighty, the latter being one of the highest grossing. These interpretations have supported his versatility as an actor, awarding him an Oscar.    Many would believe that, just because two older men have most of the scenes, it would be a boring movie; however, these actors gave us unforgettable performances, conjugated in a film of great teachings. Many times we wait for the right opportunity to get into what we want to do and we forget that the moment will always be the now, and this story shows it very well structured, maintaining that balance between the material (what we want to obtain with money) and the simple but very important details (relationships and true happiness).

   "It is difficult to measure the value of a person's life. For some it is measured by the beings he leaves behind, for others it is measured by faith, for others by love, for others life has no meaning. For me, I believe that one is measured by those who have been measured by him."

   This small fragment narrated in the film and said by Carter, really speaks of many things that we do not take into consideration and is that, how many times we worry about how much our life is worth or if they really have some meaning for the passage of this world, that we leave aside the real challenge: to be happy, because what is worth living if you are not happy and if someone was happy with your existence; with the latter, it is not that we focus on others totally, rather that, with only our existence, someone felt influenced in a positive way by it, being happy in the process.

   In my opinion, these types of roles that Morgan plays, where he leaves us a series of lessons on different subjects, fit him wonderfully, because that way of narrating and transmitting the message evokes it magnificently, empathizing with the figure in question. This actor has arrived at this point with an extensive and successful career, although the characterization of his characters is similar, there is something in the interpretation he gives that you don't care about, rather, you feel that no one can represent them better than him.

   Muchos creerían que, solo porque dos señores mayores tienen la mayor parte de las escenas, sería una película aburrida; sin embargo, estos actores nos entregaron interpretaciones inolvidables, conjugado en un filme de grandes enseñanzas. Muchas veces esperamos la oportunidad adecuada para adentrarnos hacia aquello que queremos hacer y se nos olvida que el momento siempre va a ser el ahora y en esta historia nos los pone en manifiesto muy bien estructurado, manteniendo ese equilibrio entre lo material (aquello que deseamos obtener con dinero) y los detalles simples pero muy importantes (las relaciones y la verdadera felicidad).

   Este pequeño fragmento relatado en la película y dicho por Carter, realmente habla de muchas cosas que no tomamos en consideración y es que, cuantas veces nos preocupamos de cuanta vale nuestra vida o si en verdad tienen algún significado por el paso de este mundo, de que dejamos a un lado el verdadero desafío: ser feliz, porque que vale vivir si no eres feliz y si alguien fue feliz con tu existencia; con este último, no es que nos enfoquemos en otros totalmente, más bien que, con sola nuestra existencia, alguien se sintió influenciado de forma positiva por la misma, siendo feliz en el proceso.

   Desde mi opinión, estos tipos de papeles que Morgan actúa, donde nos deja una serie de lecciones de distintos temas le quedan de maravilla, pues esa forma de narrar y transmitir el mensaje lo evoca magníficamente, empatizando con la figura en cuestión. Este actor, ha llegado en este punto con una carrera extensa y de grandes éxitos, aunque la caracterización de sus personajes guarda similitud, hay algo en la interpretación que otorga que llega a no importarte, más bien, sientes que nadie los puede representar mejor que él.

   This film was an unexpected success at the box office, not because they thought it would be on a smaller scale but because of the collection and acceptance of the public so quickly, the production cost was only 45 million dollars while it left over 175 million dollars at the box office.

   It managed to combine entertainment with humor and the philosophy of joyfully awaiting death without fatalistic dramas.

   Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman play Edward Cole and Carter Chambers, two terminally ill death row inmates who meet at the same hospital, the former a smug millionaire and the latter a modest mechanic and former philosophy professor, who despite being from different worlds strike up a friendship and write a wish list of things they want to do before they die and embark on the adventure of making that last journey to achieve them.

   During the time this odyssey lasts, all kinds of situations arise, highlighting the comic ones in which the wishes of one are extreme for the other but for reasons of commitment they must fulfill them.

   It is entertaining, set in various parts of the world, with excellent photography and impeccable acting by two award-winning actors who have appeared in many films and who coincidentally were born in the same year, 1937.

   The wish list of those condemned to die is varied and ranges from traveling around most of the world, getting tattoos, racing cars and enjoying their palate, all achieved thanks to Cole's money.

   Criticism towards the film was varied, some considered it good while others did not and in the latter group are those who argue that the plot is weak and fails to transcend the anecdotal, while those who argue that it is a good choice is common to highlight the chemistry of the characters and the ease of entertaining with which it counts.

   Besides the fact that it leaves us an important lesson of life since it bequeaths us the question of what are the important things in life, to give happiness or to live of whims and vanities that in the end do not provide transcendent moments.
