My Take

I decided to watch The Runner because the basic idea immediately caught my attention. A mother is out for her normal morning run, and suddenly someone calls her and tells her that her son has been taken. From that moment, she cannot stop running. That simple setup sounded like the kind of thriller that could keep me interested from beginning to end.

I watched it expecting a fast movie with lots of running, chasing, and pressure, and honestly, that is exactly what I got. The movie wastes very little time before putting Maia into trouble. There is no long introduction where we have to wait for the real story to begin. Once the phone call comes, everything starts moving.

What I liked most was the feeling of being trapped. Maia is not sitting in a room trying to solve a mystery. She is moving through London while a voice is constantly controlling her through the phone. She cannot easily ask the police for help; she cannot trust her own phone, and every minute matters because Noah's life is in danger.

I also liked how the movie slowly made me question whether Maia was really losing control or secretly planning something. The ending made some of the earlier small moments more interesting. It is not a perfect thriller, but as a short, fast movie, I found it quite easy to finish in one sitting.

The biggest highlight for me was the phone call. Maia starts her day like any normal mother, but suddenly the voice of the Caller tells her that Noah has been taken. He knows personal details about her life and keeps giving her instructions. The scary part is that Maia has no idea where he is watching her from.

The London chase also gives the movie its main energy. Maia runs through streets, uses public transport, deals with strangers and tries different ways to escape the Caller's control. Even when she gets a chance to ask for help, the Caller seems to be one step ahead. The movie keeps the pressure going by making her movement part of the threat.

Then comes the biggest trick. Maia is ordered to kill Tafa, an important witness against a dangerous criminal. She appears to accept that she has no other choice. She reaches Tafa, points the gun at him, and shoots him. For a moment, it looks like Maia has really become a killer just to save her son.

But that was all part of her plan. Tafa is not actually dead. The shooting was staged as Maia secretly passed information to her colleague Ted and others, so they could help prepare the plan without the Caller knowing.

The Caller thought he had complete control over Maia. He believed she was simply following his orders. Instead, Maia was controlling the information he received. When he finally sees Tafa alive, he understands that he has been fooled. The police move in, Noah gets saved, and the Caller is finally caught. Maia wins without sacrificing Tafa.

The movie is quite short, and we find ourselves on the streets of London—the perfect setting for the film, precisely because it features so many streets, buildings, and locations that heighten the suspense. Additionally, there’s a phone call in the movie that makes us wonder, “Who’s calling? Who’s behind all this?” However, these mysteries are gradually resolved, and the plot may end up feeling like something we’ve already seen in this type of thriller.

Here, the character of a mother who’s constantly on the run makes the film feel much more fast-paced, showing that she’s a desperate woman with no time to stop. Furthermore, having her son changes everything—she now shows fear, will do everything in her power, and there undoubtedly comes a point where everything starts to feel predictable, with a script that’s too limited, turning it into a rather conventional race against time.

This is a film that could have offered so much more—such as incorporating challenges, delving deeper into the mother’s motivations, and, above all, exploring the aspect of psychological manipulation or that feeling of being completely controlled by someone you can’t even see, along with many other details that would surely have made it a great film. However, given its runtime, it gets straight to the point, maintains a steady pace, and achieves what all films today aim for: to entertain.

La película es bastante corta y nos vamos para las calles de Londres siendo la ambientación perfecta para la película por el mismo hecho de tener muchas calles, edificios y lugares que le dan más suspenso. Además, utilizan una llamada en la película la cual nos lleva a preguntarnos ¿Quién llama? ¿Quién está detrás de todo eso?, sin embargo, son cosas que se van resolviendo y puede llegar hacer algo que ya hemos visto en este tipo de películas de thriller.

Aquí el personaje de una madre qué pasa todo el tiempo corre hace que la película sea mucho más deportista, demostrando que es una mujer desesperada que no tiene tiempo para detenerse. Además, al tener a su hijo cambia todo, ya muestra miedo, hará todo lo posible y sin duda llega un momento donde todo ya se siente predecible, con un guion demasiado limitado, la cual llega a ser una carrera contrarreloj bastante convencional.

Esta es una película que podía dar mucho más, cómo poder incluir pruebas, profundizar porque esa madre y sobre todo ese aspecto de la manipulación psicológica o en esa sensación de estar completamente controlado por alguien a quien ni siquiera puedes ver y muchos otros detalles que seguramente conseguirían ser una gran película. Sin embargo, el tiempo que dura va al grano, mantiene el ritmo y lo que buscan todas las películas hoy en entretener.

Esta es una película que falla en muchas cosas y es prácticamente una carrera contra el tiempo, además una situación que nadie quisiera pasar y más aún si es una familia, ya que es algo muy malo, además nadie estaría preparado para pasar algo como eso y es allí donde la película lo demuestra. Por eso si estás buscando un thriller que sea distinto, que te deje pensando o que aproveche de verdad su interesante punto de partida, probablemente te quedarás esperando algo más con este nuevo estreno.

Finally, I sat down and watched "The Runner" , Gal Gadot's latest thriller on Prime Video and who on earth could ask for a better kickoff than one of my favorite stars? I had no high hopes. A movie I thought was another "mom on a mission" type movie, Yet another trailer that has more to offer than the movie, I was wrong, and I'm pleased to say so.

It's setup is straightforward, in fact, too easy, Maia Marten is a formidable London lawyer, a woman who jogs before her day begins, But one of those runs turns very different when an unknown voice calls her phone and tells her, quietly, that her son has been abduced, The rules are simple, if you don't move, or do exactly what the Caller says, or tell anyone, or does not tell anyone, her son dies, that's it, that's the heart of the movie and that's all they need.

The first thing I noticed is that it's extremely tactile, this isn't a movie that has tension in dialogue and clever twist dropped in a boardroom, It focuses on Maia's legs, breath, the way London itself becomes an obstacle course she can't avoid, It's as if Kevin Macdonald's unflagging energy is the same he's known for, and you can feel it a mile from here, but people keep saying it's like Speed, and I understand it's like, "don't stop or else," but it's about a person's own body being the thing that's being attacked, not a bus, not a machine.

I wasn't sure I would have seen this movie the same way if it had been done by someone else, but not Gal Gadot.... Wonder Woman, we know her as bigger than life, but here she plays her fear well. Real fear, the type that makes a mother do things that she would never have thought she could do, and Damian Lewis as the Caller is just enough of an unsettling, you never look him directly in the eye, you feel him in each and every scene, he's pulling strings somewhere just out of reach, It's a difficult thing to do, to frighten without being right there, but he does.


To be honest, the plot doesn't revolutionize anything, It's one of those tales you've heard before, A simple person thrust into a desperate situation, where good and evil become mixed, and a clock that won't stop ticking, but The Runner does very well at the task of living by its own tenets, does not pretend to be smarter than it is. It has a clear idea of the type of film it's meant to be and it delivers it with a confidence, some pacing and just enough emotional heft to keep you wanting more than just the action.

At the end of the movie, I noticed I had not checked my phone for a single time, Not once, Competing with all the distractions I could think of, sitting right in my pocket for some two hour thriller and that's saying a lot.

Did I like it? Yes , genuinely, unapologetically, yes, It will not be awarded any prizes, and it does not seek to be, it's a type of movie that does what it's supposed to, makes you runs alongside Maia, pumps you up on the heart-rate, keeps you guessing until the end of the last minute, sometimes, it's just what you're looking for for a goody night, good chase sometimes is enough.
