Hello, movie and TV lovers! I hope you're all doing great. I recently saw that Leo Woodall, who played Dexter in the series One Day, starred in a new movie, and I was super excited because I loved his performance in the show. The movie is called Tuner (or El Afinador in Spanish), directed by Daniel Roher. It’s a bit of a different story than usual, but it connects all the important plot points to create a highly entertaining mix of drama, a touch of comedy, and romance. So, I invite you to read my thoughts on Tuner.
Niki is a young piano tuner with an extraordinary ability to hear when sounds are just right. After being unable to pursue his true passion of playing the piano, he decides to make a living this way, taking advantage of his unique condition to tell when an instrument is in perfect condition. He has a close relationship with a man he considers his grandfather, who is a fundamental part of his life.
However, everything turns against him when his grandfather falls ill, leaving Niki with massive hospital bills to pay. Looking for a way to make money, he inevitably runs into a group of men who propose that he use his hearing to crack safes for wealthy individuals. In exchange, he receives payment to help solve his growing financial problems. In the middle of all this chaos, he meets Ruthie, a young woman passionate about the piano.
When Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu) enters the picture, Niki begins to develop feelings for her. Yet, he feels he can't fully open up because of the illegal work he is involved in. Despite this, moments arise where the bond of friendship and love naturally deepens. They share great moments growing their mutual affection, as well as their shared passion for music and the piano. This was one of the highlights of the film for me—their chemistry is fantastic, and I loved how they portrayed a couple on screen.
Niki's hyper-sensitive hearing becomes a double-edged sword. What started as a quick way to earn money turns into a nightmare and an endless loop of robberies and threats from this group of men. Breaking free becomes nearly impossible for Niki, as he constantly finds himself pulled back into another threat or dirty job.
I thought Leo Woodall gave an incredible performance. He hasn't received widespread recognition in cinema yet, but he clearly has immense potential. Throughout the film, you can truly feel his emotional and physical suffering during moments when loud external noises paralyze him and cause him intense pain. Ruthie's actress was also wonderful—she portrays a driven woman who, despite being in love, knows she must pursue her dreams, bringing great attitude and perseverance to the role.
It's an incredible story that deserves more recognition. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did, but sometimes movies surprise you. I loved the seamless blend of drama, romance, and a touch of action; they really knew how to weave those genres together. It's well worth a watch, and I think it leaves a great message at the end. Even if the characters don't necessarily get a traditional happy ending, the final scene was excellent and couldn't have been better. I highly recommend checking this movie out!

Many movies rely on an idea we’ve seen before—one that’s been repeated over and over—and that’s where they all start to feel the same. To truly shine, they need something new that conveys a message that transcends everything else. That’s why A Unique Talent stands out as a safe-cracking thriller—a genre very few films explore—featuring a series of situations that shift the pace of the story and allow us to enjoy the journey of a person trying to figure out what to do with the trait that sets them apart—something very few people possess—and that’s where the film truly shines.
The story introduces us to a young man who has a unique ability to hear sounds that no one else can hear, and so he applies all that talent to tuning pianos—but with the challenge that the sounds can also become too intense for him, leading us to wonder: How far can he go with that talent? Is it worth getting another job? This is a film that’s perfectly suited for all ages, since we often have a talent but don’t make the most of it—we simply let it slip away out of fear.
As the story unfolds, it gains momentum, since that ability—which goes beyond just fixing pianos—becomes the perfect tool for opening safes, a task where one wrong move can ruin everything and cause the film’s pace to shift, creating a atmosphere filled with tension, tough decisions, and money—all while revealing that many people care about you more for your talents than out of genuine affection. This is a very good idea with a lot of potential to explore, since a talent can be an opportunity, but it can also become a responsibility.
The characters also play a major role here, since being part of a team that works with pianos makes everything much more exciting—they’re all in it together, and even more so knowing that this young man has this unique ability. However, when this young man realizes that, beyond hearing sounds, he can open safes, that’s when you notice a change in his personality—he proves himself to be the best, but is left wondering if what he’s doing is right. Even so, the story manages to stay entertaining thanks to this unique protagonist and the way his talent drives the entire plot.
I liked this movie, A Unique Talent, because beyond the ability to open safes, it’s a story that helps us realize that we often see people facing difficulties, and that when they’re truly given the chance to do something different, they manage to overcome everything and can go on to become the best. Furthermore, we all have abilities, and all we have to do is make the most of them no matter what others say, since that can be a great source of motivation and inspiration for many. That’s why A Unique Talent is a story that stands out and brings a special touch to the genre. Above all, our greatest talent isn’t what we do like everyone else, but rather what only we can do in a unique way.
