“When Harry met Sally” is not only one of my favorite movies, but it's the first one that came to my mind when I read the premise of this week's contest because the story uses the New York aesthetic and lifestyle as an element of the story, so much so that it all starts when the main characters Sally (Meg Ryan) and Harry (Billy Crystal) are carpooling to New York and the movie poster is them strolling through Central park and it's directed by Nora Ephron, who was born and lived her whole life in New York, so it's hard to find anything more New York.
If you don't know the plot, the film focuses on how this pair forms a friendship over the years and through different encounters, with conversations about relationships and friendship between women and men playing a key role. And in terms of technicalities, the film has one of the best screenplays in the history of cinema, given by these same conversations.
"When Harry met Sally" no solo es una de mis peliculas favoritas, pero es la primera que vino a mi mente cuando leí la premisa del concurso de esta semana porque la historia se sirve de la estetica y el estilo de vida neoyorquino para usarla como un elemento de la misma, tanto así que todo comienza cuando los protagonistas Sally (Meg Ryan) y Harry (Billy Crystal) se van compartiendo auto para Nueva York y el poster que la pelicula es ellos paseando por Central park y esta digirida por Nora Ephron, que nacio y vivio toda su vida en Nueva York, así que es dificil encontrar algo mas neoyorquino. Si no conoces el plot, la pelicula se centra en como este par va formando una amistad a lo largo de los años y a traves de diferentes encuentros, siendo las conversaciones sobre relaciones y la amistad entre mujeres y hombres un papél fundamental de la misma. Y en cuanto a tecnisismos, la pelicula tiene una de los mejores guiones en la historia del cine, dados pues por estas mismas conversaciones.
New York serves as the setting for this story because it changes the characters and we can see how they are becoming more New Yorkers in their way of being, Sally is an empowered woman with a very avant-garde style and Billy is growing in his career. At the same time we see many scenes of what if you search on Pinterest as “New York” you might get. Bookstores, coffee shops, trips to Central Park, walking around the city carrying things like the Christmas tree scene, among others. For me what stands out the most about it is that it feels VERY organic, that's what I think the life of a normal New Yorker is like, it's not for example an idealized, glamorous or unrealistic version of what we see in the Sex and the City series.
So as the title indicates, for me, “When Harry met Sally” is the quintessential New York movie. that's all for today, thanks for making it this far!
Nueva York sirve de escenario para esta historia porque cambia a los personajes y se puede ver como se van volviendo mas neoyorquinos en su forma de ser, Sally es una mujer empoderada con un estilo muy a la vanguardia y Billy va creciendo en su carrera. A la par vemos muchas escenas de lo que si buscas en Pinterest como "Nueva York" te podria salir. Librerias, cafeterias, idas a central park, caminatas por la ciudad cargando cosas como la escena del árbol de navidad, entre otras. Para mí lo que mas destaca de todo esto, es que se siente MUY organico, asi creo que es la vida de un neoyorquino normal, no es por ejemplo una versión idealizada, glamourosa o poco realista como lo que vemos en la seria Sex and the City. Así que como indica el titulo, para mi, "When Harry met Sally" es la pelicula de New York por excelencia. esto es todo por hoy, graccias por llegar hasta aquí ¡Saludos!
