I was actually looking for a K-drama to watch and write about. And I stumbled upon this week's prompt. So I thought to write about the one I found to give a deep universal message. And finally, I decided to rewatch Squid Game.

Everyone always have a thing or two to say about the movie 'Squid Game'. The series became a global hit not just because of the interesting games in it, but because it directs a message everyone in the world understand - What people do when life becomes too hard.

People in and outside South Korea could get the message because it feels universal, people know what it feels like to struggle or to lack money.

The main message I got from watching Squid game is that humans can make dangerous choices when life and everything around them feels hopeless.

The players in the game joined because their lives outside were already full of suffering, it was one struggle or the other.

It was either debt, poverty, broken homes, unemployment or pressure. And they desire a better life.

The movie shows that there is a big gap between the rich and the poor people.

They watched the poor risk their lives in the game for money all for their entertainment.

Rich people make decisions that affect ordinary people, and this inequality is not just in the game, but it's a global one.

Squid game used the games to show how society itself feels like a competition where only a few can survive.

The games are based on old children's games in Korean. Like, red light, green light, tug of war and the candy challenge. And these games showed that Korean culture still values old traditions, and many of them still remember those games from their childhood.

Well, Life can push people into dangerous corners and situations, and society often ignore the suffering of the poor. It's also something that every country can relate to.

Many of the players in the game were not bad people, they were just pushed into doing bad things just for the money.

Money controls so many things in the world. People can lose their dignity because of money. I saw in the movie that when people becomes too focused on wealth, they start to forget their humanity.

Squid game gave the world a universal message about survival and human nature.

Amid the news about military deployments in the Caribbean, I couldn't help but think of a film based on true events that, more than fiction, seems like an instruction manual for deconstructing the pretexts for war. It's called Green Zone, a 2010 war thriller directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Matt Damon.

I had somehow managed to miss the release of the fifth season of Only Murders in the Building, or OMITB as they reference within the show regarding the podcast name. But noticing it was fully out over October, it was only necessary to binge through it. I was a little sceptical of how this season might turn out though. Five season in with the show having what is a relatively repetitive style: someone in the building dies, and the crew have to figure out a way to tell the true story regarding their demise. Always a result of murder even if at first glance it doesn't appear to be the case. You'd think it'd be easy for the show to run out of ideas or to lose its steam, especially with how the murders always take place within the building of the Arconia. Though season five managed to mix things up a bit.

Usually there's some sort of side story which pulls our attention away from the Arconia to some degree. Whether it's a play production or the personal dramas surrounding their romantic interests. With season five we're still very much centred within the Arconia, but located more in its secret depths and rich history, one that dates far back alongside the New York mob which has been operating an illegal casino beneath the building. A large room which is soon to be discovered as a former stable back in the old days of the city's reliance on horses for transport. Within the belly of the Arconia, where the casino resides, hide the city's wealthiest elites which meet and play games, gambling away while making some of their largest financial decisions. Naturally, some drama unfolds which leads to multiple deaths.

Mixed within the season are the tougher decisions that await the main characters, and this one I felt had a bit more exploration into them which gave the season a bit more development. This was the sort of season which felt like it was heading towards the end. Where we're seeing some tougher questions come into play: Oliver coming to terms with the community he needs at the Arconia. Mabel finally accepting her own route and understanding the pointlessness of comparing herself to others. Charles struggling to accept his inability to find love that doesn't lead to danger, accepting his lonely state as a result. I quite liked how this was handled throughout, while the previous seasons still developed those characters somewhat, this felt a bit more serious in that sense. It gave us a more empathetic approach to how we view them.

This season still felt like the rest with its formula. It still had an engaging story, though some of it felt a bit social commentary which I think is also normal for previous seasons too. Sometimes there's a bit of that sort of preachy writing to it that comes from one of the characters. Easy to ignore, fortunately. Though this story looks at the first changing space of New York City as automation increases and traditions are lost. As community becomes a more important concept than ever before in the process, where people grow more isolated as a result of more screens and less human contact. And there isn't just one murder here in this season, it ramps things up a bit more by adding another. Especially with a much larger number of side characters as the show didn't focus too much on the previous inhabitants of the Arconia, more on its workers and many shady visitors. Especially with the casino room taking up more screen time and less of what we've all seen before.

As is going to be case going towards the end of a season like this, you do wonder if things are shaping up to end. You do have the question of whether they can keep this up going into two or more seasons. Particularly with how each season (so far) ends up with some sort of little cliffhanger which leads into the next. A death which is mysterious and sudden just as the characters feel they're done and ready to relax and live again. This is where that previous character development mattered. Showing us the more emotional sides of those characters and what they do in the fictional world beyond the podcast which has given them so much. The podcast almost ignored this season as a result of all that growth. Despite the seriousness, it's still full of laughs. Especially with the mob side of things which is hardly taken seriously.

Naturally, the season contains a few twists and turns that I haven't mentioned here and wouldn't want to. Well worth the watch if you're already watching the show, and if not the entire show is pretty strong and worth checking out!

Jurassic Rebirth was a movie that disappointed many fans, but for me, it is always exciting to watch yet another sequel to the earlier films. As a dinosaur fan, I am always on the lookout for dinosaur movies.

If you have not watched the film yet, please do not read further. What I write below is just my opinion about the film, the plot, and the characters.

For starters, it would have been nice to see the characters from the previous editions. Like Claire and Owen, and the children from the first set of movies in the Jurassic Park series. What happened to Maisie eventually and Ian's daughter, etc, I have not read the book and would love to, if I get it. I am not sure if they are mentioned later in the book, as it wraps up. If any of you have read the book, please do mention it.

T.Rex did get a few minutes to show that he is still the boss. The huge caterpillar-like Mutadons were a refreshing watch, and how the small girl was able to deceive it by hiding inside a food shelf was indeed cool. The final battle was where the viewers got to see the Distortus rex, which, sadly, was so weird that it was not majestic like the T.Rex and could not match the Spinosaurus.

If there is a sequel to this movie, we might be able to see if the samples they collected were put to use for good purposes, finally.

More excitement is due next week as the final edition of Chaos Theory is going to be released, and we will get to see if the team is victorious. Who is your favorite character from Camp Createceous?

Let's talk about the K-drama that proved Korean high school students are biologically prepared for trauma: "All of Us Are Dead". This 12-episode blend of zombie apocalypse and high school drama is the equivalent of an IV drip of caffeine. The viewer will find themselves completely hooked. Frankly, despite its length, the show never slows down, a major achievement for a genre that typically reaches its peak after the first bite. The acting is truly superb; every terrifying scream feels earned, and the high-stakes portrayal of friendship, love, and familial bonds provides an emotional foundation before the writers tear it apart with a rusty chainsaw. The virus's origin story is also well-explained, which is refreshing, as most zombie stories simply shrug and point to a suspiciously large meteorite.

But now, let's address the elephant in the classroom – the pure, unadulterated injustice that permeates this series like a malignant type of narrative virus. The Tyranny of the Immortal Bully!

While I loved the engagement, there was a deeply unsettling feeling that the writers might secretly despise positive outcomes. For example, Gwi-nam isn't just a bully, but a psychopathic criminal. Yet, the show embellishes his near-immortality. He's the cockroach of the apocalypse! Cheong-san gouged out Gwi-nam's eye to protect himself, but Gwi-nam finally avenged him. For a moment, there was a desperate, sweet, cinematic yearning for justice. Eun-gi, the victim of injustice, turned into a zombie, but Gwi-nam couldn't be punished because the writer wasn't interested in a positive outcome. Gwi-nam was allowed to take his revenge until the final dramatic moment, but not his victims. It makes you feel like the entire series was written by a nihilist who only believes in bad karma.

The Antidote of Lies and the Father Who Shouldn't Have Died!

The parade of injustice continues! Remember On-jo's father? The dedicated firefighter who crisscrossed the devastated city, saving strangers, to finally reach his daughter... and promptly became a zombie victim? This was the writer's main aim: to spark a glimmer of hope, only to brutally extinguish it faster than the science teacher explaining the word "antidote."

Speaking of the science teacher: What was with that whole "Antidote in my laptop!" goose chase? The poor soldiers spent precious time watching his recorded lectures, only to discover that there was no antidote, just a man desperately trying to prove how clever he was by inventing a deadly virus. It's like a villain sending the hero on a treasure hunt, and the reward is a note that says, "Haha, April Fool!"😄

This series has made killing everyone into an art. If a character gets a new girlfriend, they die. If a character finally admits they like someone, they die. If they even show some basic competence, they die. Honestly, it's amazing how they managed to save the few survivors, probably because the writers ran out of negativity for the last five minutes.

Overall, "All of Us Are Dead" was good entertainment, but I also felt it was written by a very negative, hopeless, and somewhat psychopathic writer. It's a well-crafted show that will have you screaming at your screen for its lack of objectivity. Go watch it, but maybe keep a therapist on speed dial. This is my honest feedback, hope you like it!

This science-fiction series on Apple-TV is something that I find refreshing and a new take for shows that are post-apocalyptic. The overall theme of what would humanity be like after a world-ending or world-changing event is something that I think has been done probably too many times so the fact that they were able to come up with something really original has left me mostly impressed.

one of the first things that drew me to this show was that it has the same creator as Breaking Bad which is a show I consider to be top-5 of all time. Also, the lead actress Rhea Seehorn did an absolutely outstanding job in Better Call Saul so I felt as though she wouldn't disappoint, and she doesn't.

There is potential for mild spoilers in this write-up so if you want to go in fresh, just know that I heartily recommend this show to anyone, not just sci-fi fans. It is one of the better series that I have seen in recent years and if they carry on making it like they have been so far, that "recent years" will change to "all time."

Once again, Spoilers Ahead!!

Things start out a big vague in episode one as we are shown a bunch of different sets of people that are all working in different fields such as research and stargazing in a SETI (search for intelligent life) sense. They are all going nuts because they have discovered a signal that is coming from 600 light years away that appears to be intelligent. Unfortunately for these people doing the discovery, the signal isn't as innocent as they had hoped.

In a research lab that is replicating the signal in the form of an injection RNA sequence to rats, one of the scientists ends up getting infected and starts to convulse. A bit later she comes back to consciousness and then kisses the person who was with her when she started to convulse and then he goes through the same process of first convulsing, then coming back in a sort of robotic sense. No words are spoken, nobody is injured, but these zombie-like people are just spreading their infestation to everyone by saliva.

It's strange, weird, and kind of confusing, but it all starts to make sense later when we are introduced to exactly what this infestation is. It isn't an alien invasion per se, but it also kind of is. The zombie-like people only remain that way for a short while, but during their conversion they can sometimes fall and hurt themselves or others and in the case of people operating vehicles such as airplanes, the results can be quite disastrous. We only see snippets of this.

Basically the entirety of the world is taken over in a very short amount of time by this infestation and the new inhabitants of the bodies are not really the individual that they were before, but it doesn't really matter because out of the entire planet only 13 people were not infected. Our main character, Carol Sturka (played by Seehorn) is one of them.

At first we are not made aware if the infested are dangerous or not but we soon realize that they are reaching out to Carol and trying to help her, as they say they will "move heaven and earth to make her happy." All of the infested share a hive-mind and everyone knows everything that the other know including their most intimate thoughts and secrets. The infested claim to be happy and are working around the clock to figure out why it is that Carol isn't one of them and they want to change that.

Carol, being one of the only people on the earth that is not one of them, has a different perspective on this though and doesn't see their "glee" as a good thing and doesnt' want to be converted even though every single infested that she encounters doesn't appear to be a prisoner against their will at all.

Not only do they not appear to be unhappy or enslaved, they are completely incapable of processing anger so when Carol has a freak-out session (which she does frequently) they go into "blue screen" mode and when this happens to one of them, it happens to all of them. This might seem like a great way for Carol to get what she wants but the thing is, and you will discover this very early on, the infested only want to do whatever it takes to make Carol happy - or any of the other 12 people on the planet who were immune to the takeover.

Carol can have literally anything that she wants that they can possibly bring to her, even if the things they bring her are to her own detriment which you will see in episode 3, can be very dangerous.

Should I watch it?

As I mentioned near the start of this write-up, this is one of the most imaginative series I have seen in many years and I am thoroughly enjoying it. one of the only things I don't like is how Carol regularly freaks out even though it is determined very early on that this is an extremely dangerous thing for her to do. This isn't Rhea Seehorn's fault, she is just doing the lines and script that was handed to her... I just think they return her to an enraged state much more frequently than they should seeing as how Carol doesn't really have to remember very many things and I think that this one thing would be something that she would definitely remember.

You'll see what I am talking about when you watch it as it is a bit frustrating to see this happen over and over again.

Even with that going on though, there is so much about this show that is extremely entertaining and original and that is something that we just don't see very often in movies or series these days.

The only thing I am disappointed about now is that I was unaware that this series is being released one-episode-a-week and if I had known that I would have waited until more of them are out before I started on it. The remaining episodes of season 1 will be released once per week until the end of 2025. At the moment, only 3 episodes are available and only on Apple TV+

Highly recommended for everyone

Hello movie and TV fans! Mr Mercedes just landed on Netflix. It already includes the complete season 1-3 of the series. It was based on Stephen King's book so I immediately watched it having been a fan of King's previous works like It, Dark Tower, Salem's Lot and even his son's Black Phone movies.

Summary

Based on Stephen King's book, Mr. Mercedes is not a horror story. It's a crime thriller about a retired detective, Bill Hodges, who is after his unsolved case. Two years ago, a man in clown mask riding a stolen Mercedes plowed through a crowd, ending the life of several people. After his retirement, he begins receiving messages from the supposed killer dubbed as Mr Mercedes. The guy is Brady, a nerdy guy who is a tech whiz but has problems with socially awkward. He seems to be a nice guy but underneath is a sociopath who has no problems ending innocent lives. We spend a slow burn ten episodes of Hodges trying to uncover and catch who Mr Mercedes is. At the same time, Brady is also playing games with Hodges trying to get him to end his life.

Cast

Brendan Gleason is Bill Hodges, a retired, out of shape detective who seems depressed and grumpy like Dr House. He lives lonely, being estranged from his wife and daughter while also carrying the guilt of the unsolved case.

Harry Treadway is Brady, a typical IT guy who looks polite and socially awkward. Underneath, he hides a violent and sick personality due to his childhood experience and abuse. Brady is quite a genius, if not for his sick personality the story could lead to him being the main character and we get a different series.

My Take on the Series

Mr Mercedes is a ten part slow burn series. Each episode is close to an hour so it can get boring if you are not invested in the characters. I find both Hodges and Brady back story interesting and their cat and mouse affair engaging. Even the supporting characters like Holly is sympathetic. The scenes in Brady's work place somehow remind of "The Office". Since this is Stephen King's work, it seems to be connected to his other works. There's even a gory cameo of King in there. I already started season two and I can see similarities to the Black Phone, written by King's son. From a grounded crime thriller it's moving toward supernatural territory where Brady can get in the minds of people.
