I don't think I need to introduce this cult film series to anyone. It's a cinematic classic, a production with a superb script and acting, a brilliant horror film that holds up in every respect to this day. I won't mention such minor issues as dated special effects, because that's part of the experience. Especially since it's a truly polished film – like The Thing, the first Halloween movie, Terminator 2 (personally, I prefer 1, but 2 is better overall in my opinion), Rambo 1... All of it feels like it came out two or three years ago. Absolute cinema, as Martin Scorsese once said.
I've seen the sequel several times. On TV, this film is unwatchable due to its length and the advertising. Years later, I'm shocked that Cameron made such a disappointingly weak film and that so few people have seen it. I think it's down to nostalgia. The film is too long; you could cut a lot of material out of it and not notice the difference. It's poorly edited (especially the scenes with the Xenomorphs. The cinematic visionary must have edited this film while suffering from a massive hangover), and the only good thing is the final confrontation with the queen. I've seen parts 3 and 4, but I don't remember. I may have seen the whole thing, or maybe just parts. I'll catch up if I feel like it.
When it comes to new releases, my adventure ended with Prometheus. My father (a fan of this franchise who introduced me to this universe) and I went to the cinema shortly after its premiere. Our opinion was no different from most – it was critical. I haven't seen Alien: Covenant because it was a waste of time and energy. Although my attitude towards Alien is similar to the old SW installments (they were in my life, but they're gone and unlikely to return; I don't feel even a shred of nostalgia for them), I still feel a lingering nostalgia for it. I also think it could make at least a few good films or TV series. I'm not talking about Alien: Romulus. Despite initially positive reviews, the film turned out to be lackluster. I haven't seen it myself, but all my friends who are fans of the series (including my father) have. Everyone complained.
On August 12th, and in Poland on the 13th, the Alien Earth series debuted. It was created by Noah Hawley, a writer, singer, director, and screenwriter. He has received several awards—for his screenplay, books, and television series. Although his portfolio isn't extensive, many creators would like to take credit for it. Seasons 1 and 2 of Fargo are masterpieces, which I reviewed on my blog. I haven't seen Legion, but I plan to – it's something for Marvel fans who want to watch an ambitious superhero movie. When I blogged a few years ago that Noah was making a series out of a franchise I love, I read the news several times to be sure. After making sure I wasn't dreaming, I went for a cigarette. After that, no one said anything for a long time. Even several digital content creators, including myself, began to wonder if the project had been abandoned, as sometimes happens. It turned out not to be. Then we got the first announcements and the premiere date, and I waited like little Thomas for Santa Claus to arrive.
The first thing that caught my eye was the extraordinary quality. I don't want to start comparing it to other series now, because there's no point in doing so right now. The first episodes should be the best they can be, so for now, I don't see where they're skimping. And it has to be based somewhere, otherwise the budgets for films and TV series would be astronomically large. For comparison, the first season of The Mandalorian cost Disney $100 million. Shogun cost $250 million, and A:E exceeded that amount. It can only be compared to giants like Game of Thrones. The level of special effects rivals that of a film. Watching the space transporter fly, I didn't even think for a moment that this was a TV series. Until I moved closer to the TV to better examine the blurriness in places most viewers don't look (this saves on effects). I didn't notice much of it; the transporter crashed beautifully into Earth, demonstrating the difference in scale. A gigantic spaceship in the center of a city. Rocks and building fragments crashed against the energy shields, posing an even greater threat to the rescue team. And then there were the ship's contents, in the form of livestock. We saw several new monsters, and each one was refined. The models are beautiful, moving smoothly and precisely. We can feel the speed and power of their tentacles. Admittedly, I didn't feel like these aliens were real (like, for example, the Apes from the latest Planet of the Apes movies), but I'm much closer to that than to dismissing these models for their unrealistic nature. I especially liked the moment when the tentacled eye attacked the humans, especially how it expanded its range of vision. A simple but effective effect.
At some point, I don't remember which, a few lines from Alien 1 came to mind. They referred to androids, aliens, the structure of the world, the status quo on Earth, or something else. I mentioned them all at once because I realized at one point that it wasn't a coincidence, but rather well-conducted research. I remember everything from several viewings of Parts 1 and 2, numerous discussions with my father or fans, online or in person. This is evident not only in the script but also in the numerous references to the Nostromo crew. Noah Hawley repeatedly winked at fans, showing scenes that are identical to what we know. The scenes on the ship are literally filled with them. The second episode, which wasn't directed by him, did the same thing. Even the editing of scenes harkens back to old cinema. The transitions, the portrayal of characters thinking against the backdrop of other scenes. I'd seen a few other examples, but I'd forgotten about them. It's not because the series is bad. This one, so far, hovers between good and very good. It's just that the first episode was a bit...
Boring. However, it's not a lack of skill. The dialogue is well-written, we don't spend too much time in any one location, the characters are well-developed, and there's always something happening... So what's the reason? In my opinion, it stems from the necessary exposition. I don't know how Earth was portrayed in films other than A1, A2, or Prometheus, but those three films didn't develop Earth's storylines much. They spent little time merely outlining the status quo on Earth or showing things necessary from a scripted perspective. It's no surprise, as everything was dictated by the main star, the most powerful predator in the history of the universe. No one cared what was happening on Earth, and no one predicted that over 45 years later, someone would release a series about an alien on Earth. And a series isn't a movie, so something else had to be invented.
I can certainly commend the creator, who was also the screenwriter, for managing to weave something that naturally connects to the previous installments, despite being a prequel. The series takes place two years before the events of the first film. Remember when Ripley woke up on Earth and told the corporate representative about the aliens? The corporate representative said they had problems with them on Earth, but somehow managed to cope. There are several other such references. For example, the aliens sense fear, just like some animals on Earth – if we pretend to be dead, there's a good chance the animal won't attack us. We were also introduced to the corporate plot. Although it was clearly stated that they have power on Earth, we didn't feel it. The series takes full advantage of this opportunity, showing the omnipotence of corporations. They are more powerful entities than all nations, and they determine the direction of humanity's development.
For now, it's hard to say whether the new content is interesting. It's certainly promising. Why do I think so? Noah throws out some interesting clues – it's clear he's at least familiarized himself with psychology (the threads about breeding synthetic humans), genetics (gene transference, which results in a high IQ – a thread about the head of Prodigy, a new corporation), futurology (no one pretends that androids, cyborgs, synthetic humans are the future of humanity), and technology – I don't have any examples here because I've forgotten them. I don't know how Noah will use these "crumbs," but knowing the excellent Fargo, I hope I won't be disappointed. I liked the very concept of breeding a new type of human. Especially using a well-known fairy tale (and while I'm on the subject, they brilliantly utilized the Disney universe – fairy tales, Ice Age, etc.). While we've seen it in abridged form (I'm talking about the creation of synthetic humans), I never once caught Noah making a mistake. In fact, I was surprised twice by the brilliance of his mind. As I've mentioned in several posts recently, I like to anticipate future words/events. I succeed more often than not. Here, as with Taylor Sheridan's series, the art is noticeably more difficult. Both screenwriters, like the Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, put real effort into their research. Research itself is one thing, but putting it all together into a coherent whole is another. And so far, he's doing really well.
Unfortunately, I have to end this review on a sad note. Remember how I talked about the terrible editing in A2? The short shots showing the Xenomorphs in such poses that we had a harder time getting a good look at them. So when I saw our adorable star and was about to exclaim, "Wow, finally!", I didn't even finish saying "Wow." Instead, I said, "Woah... What the fuck?! Don't tell me I'm going to see Alien like this for the ENTIRE SERIES!!!" Things got a little better later on, but the Alien still made brief appearances. I can overlook this if the creator used this technique to show the difference between us. The series is so consistently crafted that I can believe it. The Xenomorphs' portrayal is no exception – they're identical to the original in every respect. They react to fear, move silently, and murdering people poses no problem for them. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a good look at them, so I don't know if, and if so, how they differ from the original. Please don't spoil it, because everything else is still excellent.
As of now, my rating is 8/10. While some people have complained about the first few episodes, the majority of viewers have been positive. And as for criticizing the characters' stupidity? That's a hallmark of this genre, horror. If the characters made completely rational decisions, there wouldn't be a show. Alien is definitely no exception, and anyone who claims otherwise should watch the first film. That's all there is to it, and that's all there is to it.
Chyba nikomu nie muszę przedstawiać kultowej serii filmów. To klasyka kina, produkcja z doskonałym scenariuszem i aktorstwem, świetny horror, który broni się pod każdym względem po dziś dzień. O takich drobnostkach, jak przestarzałe efekty specjalne nie mówię, bo to część doświadczenia. Tym bardziej, że to naprawdę dopracowany film - jak The Thing, pierwsza część Halloween, Terminator 2 (osobiście wolę 1, ale 2 wg mnie jest lepsza jako całość), Rambo 1... Wszystko to ogląda się, jakby wyszło max 2, 3 lata temu. Kino absolutne, jak to powiedział Martin Scorsese.
Sequel widziałem kilka razy. W TV ten film nie nadaje się do oglądania z uwagi na jego długość oraz reklamy. Po latach jestem w szoku, że Cameron zrobił tak rozczarowująco słaby film i że tak mało ludzi to widzi. Wydaje mi się, że to zasługa nostalgii. Film jest za długi, można wykroić z niego kawał materiału i nie poczujemy różnicy. Ma fatalny montaż (Zwłaszcza sceny z Xenomorphami. Wizjoner kina chyba musiał montować ten film na gigantycznym kacu) i jedyne co jest fajne, to finałowa konfrontacja z królową. 3 i 4 część widziałem, ale nie pamiętam. Może widziałem w całości, może fragmentami. Nadrobię jeśli najdzie mnie ochota.
Jeśli chodzi o nowe produkcje, to moja przygoda zakończyła się na Prometeuszu. Wraz z ojcem (fan tej franczyzy, wprowadził mnie w to uniwersum) pojechaliśmy do kina niedługo po premierze. Nasza opinia nie różni się od większości - była krytyczna. Nie widziałem Alien: Covenant, bo szkoda mi było czasu i nerwów. Choć mój stosunek względem Alien, jest podobny do starych części SW (były w moim życiu, ale już ich nie ma i raczej nie wrócą, nie czuję względem nich nawet krzty nostalgii), to nadal czuję wobec niej resztki nostalgii. Uważam też, że można z niej wycisnąć przynajmniej kilka udanych filmów, czy seriali. Nie mówię tutaj o Alien: Romulus. Mimo początkowo pozytywnych recenzji, film okazał się być słaby. Sam go nie widziałem, ale wszyscy moi znajomi będący fanami serii (włącznie z moim ojcem), już tak. Każdy narzekał.
12 sierpnia, a w Polsce 13, zadebiutował serial Alien Earth. Stworzył go Noah Hawley, pisarz, piosenkarz, reżyser i scenarzysta. Otrzymał kilka nagród - za scenariusz, książki i seriale. Choć jego portfolio nie jest zbyt duże, to nie jeden twórca chciałby przypisać je sobie. 1 i 2 sezon Fargo to arcydzieła, które zrecenzowałem na swoim blogu. Legion nie widziałem, ale mam zamiar - to coś dla fanów Marvela, którzy chcą obejrzeć ambitne kino superhero). Gdy kilka lat temu, napisałem na blogu, że Noah robi serial z lubianej przeze mnie franczyzy, dla pewności przeczytałem newsa kilka razy. Gdy upewniłem się, że to nie sen, poszedłem zapalić papierosa. Potem przez długi czas nikt nic nie mówił. Nawet kilku twórców cyfrowych treści, w tym ja, zaczęło się zastanawiać, czy projekt nie został porzucony, jak to czasem bywa. Okazało się że nie. Potem dostaliśmy pierwsze zapowiedzi, datę premiery, a ja czekałem, jak mały Tomek na nadejście świętego Mikołaja.
Pierwsze, co rzuciło mi się w oczy, to niezwykła jakość. Nie chcę teraz rzucać porównaniami z innymi serialami, bo póki co nie ma to sensu. Pierwsze odcinki powinny być możliwie, jak najlepsze, więc póki co nie widzę na czym oszczędzają. A na czymś trzeba, inaczej budżety filmów i seriali byłyby kosmicznie duże. Dla porównania, 1 sezon The Mandalorian kosztował Disneya 100 milionów dolarów. Shogun kosztował 250 milionów, zaś A:E przekroczył tę kwotę. Można go równać jedynie z gigantami pokroju Game of Thrones. Poziom efektów specjalnych, dorównuje filmowego formatowi. Widząc lot kosmicznego transportowca, nawet przez chwilę nie pomyślałem, że to serial. Aż zbliżyłem się do telewizora, by lepiej przyjrzeć się rozmyciom w miejscach, na które nie spogląda większość widzów (dzięki temu oszczędza się na efektach). Nie spostrzegłem ich zbyt wiele, transportowiec w piękny sposób rozbił się o Ziemię, pokazując różnicę w skali. Gigantyczny statek kosmiczny w centrum miasta. Kamienie i fragmenty budynku rozbijały się o tarcze energetyczne, stwarzając jeszcze większe zagrożenie dla ekipy ratowników. No i zawartość tego statku w formie żywego inwentarza. Zobaczyliśmy kilka nowych potworów i każdy z nich został dopracowany. Modele są ładne, poruszają się płynnie i precyzyjnie. Czujemy szybkość i siłę macek. Co prawda nie miałem wrażenia, jakby ci kosmici istnieli naprawdę (tak jak np. Małpy z ostatnich części Planety Małp), ale jest mi do tego znacznie bliżej niż do odrzucenia tych modeli przez ich nierealistyczność. Spodobał mi się szczególnie moment, gdy oko z mackami zaatakowało ludzi, a zwłaszcza jak rozszerzył zakres obserwacji. Prosty, ale udany efekt.
W pewnym momencie, nie pamiętam którym, przypomniało mi się kilka zdań z 1 części Alien. Odnosiły się do androidów, obcych, budowy świata, statusu quo na Ziemi lub czegoś innego. Wymieniłem je wszystkie jednocześnie, bo spostrzegłem za którymś razem, że to nie przypadek, a dobrze przeprowadzony research. Wszystko pamiętam z kilku seansów 1 i 2 części, licznych dyskusji z ojcem lub fanami, w internecie lub na żywo. Widać to nie tylko po scenariuszu, ale też licznych nawiązaniach do załogi Nostromo. Noah Hawley wielokrotnie puszczał oko do fanów, pokazując sceny bliźniaczo podobne do tego, co znamy. Fragmenty na statku są wręcz nimi wypełnione. Drugi odcinek, który nie był reżyserowany przez niego, też to robił. Nawet montaż scen nawiązuje do starego kina. Te przejścia, pokazywanie myślących bohaterów na tle innych scen. Widziałem też kilka innych przykładów, ale zapomniałem o nich. Nie dlatego, że serial jest słaby. Ten póki co, piastuje się między dobrym, a bardzo dobrym. Chodzi o to, że pierwszy odcinek był trochę...
Nudny. Nie jest to jednak nuda wynikająca z braku umiejętności. Dialogi zostały dobrze napisane, nie przebywamy zbyt długo w jakieś lokacji, postacie są dobrze skonstruowane, ciągle coś się dzieje... Zatem co jest przyczyną? Moim zdaniem, wynika to z koniecznej ekspozycji fabularna. Nie wiem, jak pokazano Ziemię w innych filmach niż A1, A2, czy Prometeusz, ale te 3 filmy, niewiele rozwinęły Ziemskie wątki. Poświęcono im niewiele czasu, by jedynie zarysować status quo na Ziemi lub pokazać rzeczy niezbędne z perspektywy scenariusza. Nie ma co się dziwić, wszystko zostało podyktowane głównej gwieździe, czyli najlepszemu drapieżnikowi w historii wszechświata. Nikogo nie obchodziło, co się dzieje na Ziemi, nikt też nie przewidział, że ponad 45 lat później, ktoś wyda serial opowiadający o Obcym na Ziemi. A serial to nie film, więc trzeba było wymyślić coś jeszcze.
Na pewno mogę pochwalić twórcę, a jednocześnie scenarzystę, że udało mu się ulepić coś, co naturalnie łączy się z poprzednimi częściami, mimo bycia prequelem. Akcja serialu dzieje się 2 lata przed wydarzeniami z 1 filmu. Pamiętacie, jak Ripley obudziła się na Ziemi i mówiła przedstawicielowi korporacji o Obcych? Przedstawiciel korporacji powiedział, że mieli z nimi problemy na Ziemi, ale jakoś sobie poradzili. Takich nawiązań jest jeszcze kilka. Np, że Obcy wyczuwają strach, tak jak niektóre zwierzęta na Ziemi - jeśli będziemy udawali martwych, jest duża szansa, że zwierzę nas nie zaatakuje. Przybliżono nam też wątek korporacji. Choć wyraźnie zaznaczono, że mają władzę na Ziemi, to nie czuliśmy tego. Serial w pełni wykorzystuje tę sposobność, pokazując wszechwładność korporacji. Są silniejszymi bytami od wszystkich państw i to one ustalają kierunek rozwoju ludzkości.
Póki co, trudno powiedzieć, czy nowy content jest ciekawy. Na pewno jest obiecujący. Czemu tak uważam? Noah rzuca ciekawymi tropami - widać, że przynajmniej zapoznał się z psychologią (wątki z hodowaniem syntetycznych ludzi), genetyką (przekazywanie genów, z czego wynika wysokie IQ - wątek szefa Prodigy, nowej korporacji), futurologia (nikt nie udaje, że androidy, cyborgi, syntetyczni ludzie, to przyszłość ludzkości) i technologią - tutaj nie mam przykładów, bo go zapomniałem. Nie wiem, jak Noah wykorzysta te "okruszki", ale znając doskonałe Fargo, liczę że nie będę rozczarowany. Podobała mi się sama koncepcja hodowania nowego typu człowieka. Zwłaszcza z wykorzystaniem znanej baśni (a skoro przy tym jestem, świetnie wykorzystano asortyment należący do Disneya - bajki, Ice Age etc.) Co prawda widzieliśmy to w skróconej formie (mówię o powstawaniu syntetycznych ludzi), ale ani razu nie złapałem Noaha na popełnieniu błędu. Wręcz dwa razy zostałem zaskoczony błyskotliwością jego umysłu. Tak jak wspominałem ostatnio w kilku tekstach, lubię przewidywać kolejne słowa / wydarzenia. Częściej mi się udaje niż nie. Tutaj, podobnie jak w przypadku seriali autorstwa Taylora Sheridana, ta sztuka jest zauważalnie trudniejsza. Obaj scenarzyści, podobnie jak polski pisarz, Andrzej Sapkowski, naprawdę starają się przy researchu. Sam research to jednak jedno, czym innym jest połączenie tego w logiczną całość. A póki co, wychodzi mu to naprawdę dobrze.
Niestety, ale muszę zakończyć tę recenzję smutnymi słowami. Pamiętacie, jak mówiłem o fatalnym montażu w A2? Krótkie ujęcia, pokazujące Xenomorphy w takich pozach, że mieliśmy trudniejsze zadanie, chcąc im się przyjrzeć. Zatem jak zobaczyłem naszą uroczą gwiazdę i już miałem krzyknąć: "Wow, nareszcie!", nawet nie skończyłem mówić "Wow". Zamiast tego powiedziałem: "Wooo... Co jest kurwa?! Nie mówcie mi, że tak będę widział Aliena przez CAŁY SERIAL!!!" Później było trochę lepiej, ale nadal, Obcy pojawiał się na krótko. Mogę przymknąć na to oko, jeśli twórca zastosował ten zabieg w celu pokazania różnicy między nami. Serial jest tak konsekwentnie prowadzony, że mogę w to uwierzyć. Przedstawienie Xenomorphów nie jest wyjątkiem - pod każdym względem są jak oryginał. Reagują na strach, poruszają się w sposób bezszelestny, mordowanie ludzi nie stanowi dla nich najmniejszego problemu. Niestety nie mogłem się im przyjrzeć, więc nie wiem czy, a jeśli tak, to jak różni się od pierwowzoru. Proszę, nie popsuj tego, bo cała reszta trzyma poziom.
Na ten moment, moja ocena to 8/10. Choć niektórzy narzekają na pierwsze odcinki, to odbiór większości widzów jest pozytywny. A jeśli chodzi o krytykę głupoty bohaterów. To jest cecha tego gatunku, horrorów. Gdyby postacie podejmowałyby w pełni racjonalne decyzje, to nie byłoby show. Alien zdecydowanie nie jest wyjątkiem, a jak ktoś twierdzi, że jest inaczej, to niech obejrzy 1 część filmu. Tylko tyle i aż tyle.

You have to sit through the character intros for 25 minutes, and after that, the action begins.
The plot is tight, and little to no space for filler. The movie even managed to give the side characters some action. Even the little girl made herself useful by opening the gate to save the fellow humans. And not like the one in the Fallen Kingdom, who opened the gates for the wrong species. In a way, I felt that the movie was trying to apologise for its predecessors. 
It was a good weekend for me, from tomorrow onwards again the same old routine, Office, Home, gym and etc.. And somewhere, Hive is falling behind in all this. Let's see if I am able to hit the 5K Hive mark by this year's end.
I will try to bring my financial learnings back too. Although not much to share, but would like to bounce some ideas here.
