      I saw Howard Hawks' 'Bringing Up Baby' (1938) years ago for the first time and didn't like it, just as I didn't like it when it was first released. Afterwards, I have seen it many times and, considering the prestige it has acquired, I have tried to look at it from other perspectives to see if I could get the hang of it, but I have not. So I have tried to analyze the reasons for this rejection. I think the script exceeds all limits of believability. Cary Grant still holds his lines well as a clueless sage, but the comments and actions of Katherine Hepburn's character are insane, endangering anyone near her. And finally, the inclusion of a leopard, to add to the comic nonsense, is beyond the pale. First, leopards cannot be hunted in Brazil, because this feline does not live in America, the only one native to America is the jaguar.

      And obviously the first thing the paleontologist played by Grant would do, knowing the danger of the animal, would be to call the fire department or the police to capture it. The most delirious scene is when the leopard walks unleashed down the street next to Cary Grant, who takes some time to notice it. It is clear that in order to avoid immediate alarm among pedestrians, Howard Hawds chose not to let any extra pass through that street along the way, which exposes the traps of the script.

    The other night, my Bonnie Bride and I settled in to watch Bringing Up Baby (1938), a screwball comedy with a mix of slapstick thrown in starring Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Neither one of us had seen this film before, but we were both aware of this classic film, so the timing was good.

    Grant play David, s a paleontologist at a museum who is due to get married, and awaiting the arrival of the last bone of the brontosaurus he is building at the museum, while Hepburn plays Susan, the eccentric niece of a wealthy woman who may donate $1 Million dollars to the museum. Susan and David meet when Susan mistakenly uses David’s golf ball to finish round and then promptly steals David’s car, which is, ironically, identical to, and parked next to, his car. Laughter erupts as they continue to encounter each other later that evening with more misadventures. When Baby, a tame leopard, is delivered to Susan, she ends up calling David for help, pretending to be attacked by said leopard to coerce David to come over and help. David, his missing brontosaurus bone having been delivered, shows up with said bone in hand, and Chaos ensues.

    Grant’s portrayal of David, the paleontologist, comes off as a bit of a stuffy, yet, absentminded professor type, who is over his head in the situations he finds himself in with Susan everytime she turns up. Hepburn’s portrayal of Susan is spot on with comedic timing in the dialogue, and even does a fun gangster-style dialogue bit towards the end of the film. Susan is a bit goofy and also a bit absent minded, which explains why she does silly things like driving off in the wrong car, among many other things. Hepburn would does prove she can do fun comedy in *Bringing Up Baby*.

    Then there is the dog, George, who adds to the chaos by running off with, and then burying, the previoulsy mentioned bone. Now David and Susan have to find where George buried the bone, and make sure that George is not used by Baby, the leopard, as a light snack, because Baby is on the loose. Pratfalls abound, and other goofiness. And yes, yet another leopard appears on the scene, that is, um, less than tame.

    One thing I have to note is when checking out the credits, I found that Bringing Up Baby was directed by Howard Hawks, who is considered to be one of the best directors of the 20th Century. Which is why it is such a good film. Back in the day when I was studying film history in college, my Prof, Woody, made a big point that Hawks, along with John Ford, were two top notch directors, and I have previously written about a couple of other films Hawks has directed. In the wikipedia entry for Bringing Up Baby, Hawks talked about the mistake he made in this film by having so many characters that could be described as “crazy”, which hurt the film’s success at the time of it’s release. However, the film has aged well and is a very enjoyable screwball film right up there with It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World, another fun screwball comedy. The wikipedia page also mentions that this film was considered a bit of a flop, and that Hepburn was considered box office poison for a couple of years after that. Both of these points are surprises to me.

    My Bonnie Bride and I both thoroughly enjoyed watching Bringing Up Baby, and at points our laughter attracted the attention of Jasmine, the wonder dog, wondering what was going on. It is also the kind of film I can watch more than once or twice, and regret not having seen it before as it is such a fun film. In fact, I asked my Bonnie bride – “How the heck have I not seen this film before”! Beats the heck out of me. Such a fun film wo unwind with at the end of the day!

    First day of the week, so let's talk today about comedy, so that we can get rid of the darkness of Monday. And because the work week almost always goes at a crazy pace, let's remember one of the favorite movies that combines dizzying screwball comedy with love story.

    Meet **David Huxley (Cary Grant)**: paleontologist. His main goal is to complete the assembly of the skeleton of a Brontosaurus, but he lacks a bone, the "intercostal clavicle." (What kind of name for a bone, huh?).

    source Second goal, to marry his fiancée and partner Alice, a terribly strict woman, who puts David's career above their marriage. Add to that the need to persuade a wealthy lady, Mrs. Random to make a generous offer to the museum to continue his research. And you know how when someone makes plans, someone up there laughs. And here comes the typhoon Susan Vance (Katharine Hepburn).

    When David meets the rich lady Radom's lawyer on a golf course, he falls on Susan, the complete opposite of David, a free-spirited, abstract spirit far removed from reason. She "steals" his golf ball, his car and finally his heart.

    Through a series of funny situations that reach the limits of the absurd, scenes that make you think how they can not happen to everyday people, this movie comes and make us believe that all these happening in the screen is something so natural.

    Because, after all, who hasn't had a second appointment with the rich lady's lawyer in a club, where he meets the absolutely charmingly absurd Susan, accidentally she tears his jacket, he tears the back of her dress and they both have to leave the club cuddling in order to hide the tear in the back of Susan's dress.

    And who does not accept as a gift for their estate a tamed leopard, who loves caresses and jazz music?

    > "This is probably the silliest thing that ever happened to me"

    Or finding the one bone you are looking for to complete the Brontosaurus skeleton and having stolen by George, the family dog, and hidden in a hole -unknown to you- dug up in an 1 acre yard? And following that dog to see where it hid that bone?

    > "Susan, do you think George is really trying?"

    Our heroes get involved in incredible situations, due to Susan's "irrational logic", some random events and certainly thanks to the demonic script of Nichols and Wilde. But above all because of this almost "unknown" director, Howard Hawks, who has given us amazing films in various genres, "Scarface", "His Girl Friday", "Big Sleep" and other masterpieces.

    Characteristic of all his films: the dynamic female characters, like Susan in this film. Susan falls first in love with David and does everything she can to conquer him (even hiding his clothes so he can not get married, leaving him only a woman's robe)

    And this dynamic woman wins the heart of our dull, conservative professor, David, who knows that Susan is the love of his life, making his life more entertaining than ever, even though she may cause mayhem in her way. Even if she destroys four years' work...

    Should you watch it? Yes, yes and yes. It is considered a classic and one of the must see films of all times. It is a love story, the protagonists have chemistry, "Baby" the leopard is an adorable kitten but most of all it is a hilarious film, that will make you laugh from scene one to the end.

In these comedies a story is told that gets more complicated until it reaches a maximum of madness that is resolved in a simple way. With quick dialogues, plot twists and a script typology present in today's cinema, theater and television series. Within this film genre a strong and independent female character is appreciated, who causes the most improbable situations.

David Huxley (Cary Grant) es un paleontólogo en busca de una donación económica para su Museo de Historia Natural; Susan Vance (Katharine Hepburn) una rica heredera quiere cazarlo a él. David, se enfrenta a una mujer capaz de hacerlo tambalear y caer, como requisito previo para lograr su amor. Le ha cambiado de nombre, vestido de mujer y hecho enfrentar con un leopardo comprenderá que ha encontrado placer en todo esto, en nunca estar seguro de quien realmente es, y que puede llenar su vida de una emoción que le era desconocida, pero que se encontraba ahí, cerca de él, esperando a ser descubierta.     Ambos tratan de capturar a un leopardo llamado Baby que huye por Connecticut. Los empleados de un circo también buscan a un leopardo que transportaban para ser sacrificado y que Susan dejó escapar por error. La película se desarrolla como un plan maestro de seducción que Susan improvisa segundo a segundo y que pretende alejar a David de su propósito original -casarse con una compañera de trabajo en el museo- y mostrarle que la vida es más arriesgada y loca.

    The two try to capture a leopard named Baby who is fleeing through Connecticut. Circus employees are also looking for a leopard they were transporting to be slaughtered that Susan mistakenly let escape.     It was directed in 1938 by Howard Hawks, whose virtue was his ability to film any genre, he filmed classics in the history of cinema such as westerns, comedies, musicals, dramas or adventure films.     The premiere on March 3, 1938 at Radio City Music Hall in New York was a failure: a week later the film was pulled from theaters. In its first season in the United States, the film grossed a mere seven hundred and fifteen thousand dollars.Hawks attributed its failure to the fact that his characters were either absolutely nuts or overflowing with eccentricities. However, his proposal would end up having its recognition thanks to an exhibition at the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art in New York), in 1961. From there it became a film classic.

    Hawks aprovecha los diálogos creando dinamismo mediante una dicción endiabladamente rápida. Aquí, el director prescindió de la música por completo para no añadir mayor densidad al ritmo de la película. Sin embargo, la misma no se echa de menos para nada. La única música es la que Hepburn pone en su tocadiscos para su “fiera”.

    Hawks takes advantage of the dialogues creating dynamism by means of a devilishly fast diction. Here, the director dispensed with the music altogether so as not to add to the film's pace. However, the music is not missed at all. The only music is that which Hepburn plays on her record player for her "beast".

    El guión de esta película partió de una pequeña historia de dos páginas publicado por Hagar Wilde, (dramaturgo y guionista) en una revista y de ahí Dudley Nichols (guionista y director de películas) confecciono un guion la medida de Hepburn. Si algo caracteriza a las películas de Hawks son su engañosa sencillez y un dominio absoluto del ritmo fílmico. Aquí Hawks lo resuelve todo con 12 personajes principales y pocos exteriores. La adorable revoltosa, está considerada la obra cumbre del género.

    The script for this film was based on a small two-page story published by Hagar Wilde (playwright and screenwriter) in a magazine and from there Dudley Nichols (screenwriter and film director) made a script tailored to Hepburn. If anything characterizes Hawks' films, it is their deceptive simplicity and absolute mastery of filmic rhythm. Here Hawks solves everything with 12 main characters and few exteriors. Bringing Up Baby is considered the pinnacle of the genre.

    Ochenta y tres (83) años han pasado desde que se firmo la película, y todavía puedo decir que es una obra muy divertida, que mantiene un ritmo acelerado y me sorprende mucho ya que es notable su influencia en películas y series actuales, una de mis escenas favoritas ocurre cuando en un restaurante Katherine Hepburn rasga la chaqueta de Cary Grant bajando unas escaleras y a continuación es el vestido de noche de Katherine Hepburn el que se rasga por accidente dando lugar a una divertida escena de los dos intentando salir del sitio. Igualmente recuerdo la persecución al perro George intentando encontrar el hueso de dinosaurio.

    Eighty-three (83) years have passed since the film was signed, and I can still say that it is a very funny work, which maintains a fast pace and surprises me a lot as it is remarkable its influence on current films and series, one of my favorite scenes occurs when in a restaurant Katherine Hepburn rips the jacket of Cary Grant down some stairs and then is Katherine Hepburn's evening dress which is torn by accident giving rise to a funny scene of the two trying to get out of the place. I likewise remember the chase of George the dog trying to find the dinosaur bone.
