  1. (ENG/SPA) Jesus Christ SuperStar: Hosanna in The STARS without spoilers, Saint Review@promete0sz435d

Since I started reviewing a few years ago, I am encouraged every year at Easter to see a new film in what I consider is the genre of the passages of Jesus in his crucifixion, there are several films of this topic that focus only on that narrative or are inspired to give their own version of that story of power that is celebrated on these dates.

This film called Jesus Christ SuperStar is psychedelia of the most exotic and high in purity that dopes the senses of religion and reflection in an extremely entertaining way, I never expected to get what I saw in this film.

The greatest feeling I can write is that it was another way to live Easter watching this movie haha, usually we are used to the heaviness in the seriousness of this type of films that focus on this story and how not to be so by the tone of the date that includes the death of a being that for many is one of the greatest representations of their spirituality in one of the worst sufferings that can live and in the representation of what this event means.

In the video of a verified Youtube channel I share a trailer of the film so that visually understand the psychedelic madness that I wrote in previous paragraphs, I invite you to give play to be in tune with the ideas I want to convey.

It is a very good musical film, one of the best I've seen, the songs stayed in my mind, of course not all are at the same level but to mention one, the song of Judas I never get tired of listening to it, it's nice to see a film and that happen this kind of things that will happily accompany me until my soul leaves my body and it's time to pay for his sins haha.

I am like a child happy with what I have seen because it is a sensation and a film that will accompany me for decades and I will remember it happily every Easter.

Usually when I see this kind of movies, the feeling that should rule is reflective sadness but in this one I was almost left dancing haha, you have to see that trailer to grasp what I write because it is a 180 degree turn to the way of telling this story that so many know keeping the message or the morals of what it wants to convey.

A synopsis of this film would be something like this, you are going to enjoy watching this film of Jesus Christ in Super Rock Star mode, a harmonic drama that I am sure will resonate with many whether they believe in Jesus or not.

The Religion element is present so anyone who reads me and does not believe in Jesus, can still watch this film because it is free enough in the way it expresses its idea that connects with today's Modernity.

It is a film from the 70's but as an idea it is still valid, so I think we can all watch it and enjoy it regardless of the religious belief that each one of us has.

In fact you can notice it in the image in which they happily see Jesus walking with his flock but there are elements of that image that do not fit in time, that I found the most striking haha, it was very entertaining to see those Apostles represented in such a drastic and radically different way both in costumes and facial expressions.

I share with you that one of the characters of the narrative that inspires this type of films which has always called my attention is Judas but I had never been able to see a film that gave much more of him .... until now.

With this film I can happily say that I have seen the PERFECT Judas Iscariot, the definitive version of this cursed character condemned by humanity in what I consider to be unfair and that is the reason why I love this character so much in the narrative.

In fact at the time I will dedicate a post exclusively to him in detail with his scenes, in this review I just want you to know that he is my favorite character in the film, he puts all the other characters in his fist and crushes them like dust.

Caiphas is powerful when he sings, a lot of attention to this character because he transmits evil and villainy.

In the case of Mary Magdalene I loved that they focused on her and not on the mother of Jesus, I know that the mother is important but Magdalene is a woman of much teaching, it was another perspective that I'm used to see the typical mother in suffering, then to hear more of what this woman thinks that was also important in the life of Jesus I liked a lot because it is a character who deserves it.

I invite you to see this cult film, believe me you will want to dance and sing Hosanna in The Sky.

I dedicate each and every one of my posts and videos to my little dog named princess, we called her chiquito, she is no longer with us but from heaven she will see that her existence was valuable and the most beautiful thing that will exist in my heart and soul.

  2. Retro Film Review: Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)@drax652d

    (source: tmdb.org)

"They don’t make those any more” is the phrase that inescapably comes to mind when films produced by Hollywood today are compared with those made during the past golden ages of the American film industry. One of those films is Jesus Christ Superstar, the 1973 musical directed by Norman Jewison. Filmed just three years after the conceptual rock album that launched the successful careers of lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and two years after the Broadway premiere of the eponymous rock opera, this film illustrates how Hollywood filmmakers, unburdened by self‑censorship and shallow commercial calculations, were able to tell frequently repeated stories in an original and impactful manner.

The film’s plot is based on texts from the New Testament and follows the last week in the life of Jesus Christ (played by Ted Neeley), starting from his entry into Jerusalem to his crucifixion. What makes this version of the story unique is that the events are depicted from the perspective of Judas Iscariot (played by Carl Anderson), portrayed as a tragic figure throughout the drama. All dialogue is set to music, and the lyrics are rich with expressions and references related to modern times. Thus, Jesus—through the eyes of his disciple Judas—is depicted as the first modern ‘superstar’, a sort of equivalent to a contemporary rock star whose personal fame has become more important than the music itself.

Director Jewison went a step further than Rice and Webber, striving for greater authenticity by filming in desert locations and archaeological sites in Israel, while wisely opting to use contemporary costumes and props. The result is a series of truly striking, and at times surreal, scenes, such as Judas, torn by personal doubt, being pursued by Israeli tanks in the desert.

In addition to the skilled director behind the camera, the film boasted a diverse yet brilliant cast. Ted Neeley as Jesus is excellent, yet still overshadowed by the masterful and recently deceased Carl Anderson, who delivered the performance of his life as Judas. Hawaiian disco singer Yvonne Elliman is also outstanding in her role as Mary Magdalene. The most interesting detail of the casting is Broadway actor Philip Toubus, who, after performing as the Apostle Peter under the pseudonym ‘Paul Thomas’, went on to have a successful career as a respected actor and director of adult films.

Jesus Christ Superstar faced a barrage of criticism due to its theme and unconventional approach, coming from the same moral guardians who later attacked Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ and Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Jewish groups protested outside cinemas over alleged antisemitism, while Christian fundamentalists claimed that depicting Jesus as a man was blasphemous. Meanwhile, those opposed to racism were outraged by Judas being portrayed by an African‑American actor. Film critics were also divided; while some praised the film for its innovative approach and musical score, others condemned it for its perceived irreverence and lack of theological depth.

Today, Jesus Christ Superstar holds a unique place among cinematic portrayals of Jesus. It is often regarded as a landmark in the genre, influencing subsequent adaptations and interpretations of the Passion narrative. The film’s blend of rock music and dramatic storytelling continues to resonate, making it a staple during the Easter season and a subject of analysis in discussions about religious representation in media. Its legacy persists, with many viewing it as a bold attempt to explore the complexities of faith and fame, setting it apart from more traditional depictions of biblical stories.

For those for whom music and good performances have no limit of themes, this is a production that contains all this and a little more.

The successful musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, based on passages from the last seven days of Jesus' life, was successfully made into a movie with a script by Norman Jewison and Melvyn Bragg and the same title of the play, becoming a cult movie full of songs and situations analogous to the biblical passages but with that touch of rock that hooked the youth of those years to go to the theaters to see it.

    [Image](https://www.brightwalldarkroom.com/2020/07/14/strange-things-mystifying-jesus-christ-superstar/)

Ted Neeley, a singer and drummer played Jesus, while Carl Anderson who was also a singer played Judas Iscariot and Yvonne Elliman played Mary Magdalene, all three were part not only of the movie but also of the musical in the theater and were nominated for a Golden Globe for their performances in the feature film, The song "I Don't Know How To Love Him" performed by Elliman was a musical hit both in English and the Spanish version sung by Angela Carrasco. .

The same happened with the film, which had a theatrical version in Spanish directed and starring Camilo Sesto.

    [Image](https://lanetaneta.com/domingo-de-ramos-peliculas-que-tienen-como-protagonista-a-jesus-de-nazaret/)

The film begins with a group of actors arriving in a Hebrew school bus in Israel to perform the Passion of Christ, then the overture begins as the actors dress up and take their roles.

The lyrics of the songs reflect a modern and anachronistic vision of the characters who bring to the present situations with which they do not agree, especially Judas who is dissatisfied with the ideological-mystical progress of their leader.

All the musical interpretations have their choreography and the rock styles that appear are intermingled, being able to find passages of funk, prog rock, psychedelia, music-hall, glam... and others.

    [Image](https://dailytheology.org/2013/03/27/jesus-christ-superstar-who-do-you-say-i-am/)

Throughout the film, the film tries to make people meditate about the treatment that the mass media of that time and the authorities would give to Christ if instead of appearing in the time he did, he would have done it now.

As expected in a time of dilemmas it had its detractors and those who accused the creators of disrespecting the memory of Jesus Christ.

Personally I had a different time and enjoyed the performances, beyond idealizing the content, it seems to me something different that is worth seeing several times.

The director of this work was the Canadian Norman Jewison who was already a veteran in the medium and had had recent success with the film "Fiddler on the Roof" and also participated in the script of the same.

It was nominated for an Oscar for best original song and won the David di Donatello Award in 1974 for best foreign film and the BAFTA of the same year for best soundtrack.
