I have to confess that I am quite a fan of Christmas movies. Actually, I'm a fan of anything that has to do with Christmas. I still have that childlike illusion for this date.

On this occasion I bring you a movie that I have seen several times when I was a child and that, for me, represents a lot of nostalgia.

Jingle All the Way was released on November 22, 1996 in the United States. It was one of the first times Arnold Schwarzenegger ventured into the comedy genre.

In this story we play Howard Langston. A man who is a workaholic and neglects his family a lot. Especially his son, Jamie.

It all starts when Howard is late for his son's karate class. Because he got off work late and was caught in traffic.

Upon returning home, he tries to apologize to Jamie for not keeping his promise. To make amends, he promises to buy him whatever he wants for Christmas. To which the boy asks for a Turbo-Man doll. A superhero who is all the rage.

The problem comes when a few days before Christmas he remembers that he had to buy the doll. This is a big inconvenience, since being a very popular toy, it is almost impossible to get it so close to Christmas. So a journey begins where the protagonist will do the impossible to keep his promise to his son.

Honestly, even though this movie is almost 30 years old, I love it. I feel it has aged well and is still very enjoyable to this day. Personally, I like to watch it from time to time. More so if we are close to the holidays.

Beyond the fact that the film is oriented towards the comedy genre, I like the load of social criticism it has. Referring to the criticism that is made to the wildest capitalism. Through those scenes where dozens of people are avalanche in a mall to get a toy. How people get desperate to get something they don't need. The funny thing is that this did happen in real life with different toys. And we can see it today with adults fighting in stores over packs of Pokémon cards.

What I liked most about Jingle All the Way was the scene where Howard fights with dozens of guys dressed as Santa Claus. The moment where the dwarf dressed as Santa flies away was a highlight. I remember it as I write it and it makes me laugh. 🤣

Secondly, I also enjoyed the chase scene when Howard has the Turbo-Man suit and is fighting Myron Larabee, the antagonist. Although I have to say that the special effects in this movie did age poorly 😅.

In conclusion, I recommend this movie. It is funny, fun, entertaining and has good action scenes. Besides Arnold Schwarzenegger gives a good performance. The truth is, he fit the role well.

  2. Why "Jingle all the way" works and his sequel don't.@richardalexis937d

    ENGLISH

I'm sure I've talked about Jingle All The Ways in this community at least a couple of times, and one of the things about this movie that I always have to mention is that I'm surprised that the critical reception of it was so bittersweet, considering that in my humble opinion is one of the most important Christmas movies out there.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the complaints about it: it is a film with a somewhat archaic message and the same could be said about its humor, apart from the fact that it exists in a socioeconomic reality with which fewer and fewer people can identify every year.

However, there is something intrinsically brilliant about the idea of putting Arnold Schwarzenegger (one of the most prominent action stars of the 90s) in a physical comedy that on more than one occasion borders on the cartoonish, and, at the same time manages to mock american consumerism and the way in which it seems to strip us of any kind of humanity, leaving behind the truly important aspects of these celebrations.

This is not to say that Jingle All The Ways is a particularly profound film, in fact, at times it seems to be totally disconnected from what it seeks to criticize, especially since its conclusion does not force its hilarious protagonist to change his regrettable way of seeing the world, depending on who we ask.

At the same time, ironically I feel that the empty execution of its premise (Seeing the struggle of a careless father to please his son with the toy he wants for Christmas, acquiring it at the last minute) is precisely what allows it to establish itself as a timeless classic, not because its message is useful today, but because it is so outdated that it is inevitable to feel nostalgia about it.

Perhaps for this same reason, the direct-to-DVD sequel that was released a couple of years later was a total failure, because accepting the passage of time, its premise was no longer as viable, considering the prevalence of online shopping today, as well as the loss of interest that children feel in more traditional toys.

Jingle All The Way remains like a time machine where political correctness was a little looser and Western society was a little more innocent, something that often served as an engine to create warmer stories, but also gave rise to a lot of discrimination unconsciously, understanding this context will allow us to enjoy it a little more.

    MV5BMmJlYzViNzctMjQ1Ni00ZWQ4LThkN2YtMzI2ZGU5Nzk0NTAyXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTQxNzMzNDI@.V1_FMjpg_UX1000.jpg

    [Source](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116705/)

    MV5BMjExODM3NzUzOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTg2MjU4Mw@@.V1.jpg Source

Jingle All The Way queda como una máquina del tiempo en dónde la políticamente correcto era un poco más holgado y la sociedad occidental era un poco más inocente, algo que muchas veces sirvió como motor para crear historias más cálidas, pero también dió pie a mucha discriminación inconsciente, entender este contexto nos va a permitir disfrutarla un poco más.

  3. Cine TV Contest: Jingle All The Way (Shopping Christmas frenzy).@nbarrios67941d

Screenshot 2023-11-30 at 07-37-09 Un padre en apuros (1996).png

Jingle All the Way (1996) by American director Brian Levant, is a Christmas entertainment film, designed to entertain children, but at the same time it is an unveiled criticism of consumerism.
    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuPc9QJcGJs)

Basically, the film describes the nightmare of any parent to acquire on Christmas Eve an unobtainable toy, the bestseller of the year, in this case Turbo-Man.

Our protagonist makes a descent into the hells of American consumerism, in shopping malls crammed with incredible offers, endless lines, piracy, and mall santas, (apparently a whole profession in the United States). It shows the collective psychosis of people on the verge of collapse to get a toy.

Seeing people rushing to get into a store and buy something was scary in the nineties, but it is even scarier today that society has not changed in the slightest.
    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-pErBQj1FU)

The father protagonist Howard Langston (Arnold Schwarzenegger), travels through shopping malls crowded with consumer fever, shelves razed by hands desperate to empty them, last-day overpricing on objects that after the holidays will lose their value and will be devalued in the face of the imposition of a new need for status, comfort and fashion.

Behind the Turbo-Man's quest, he meets his opponent, Myron Larabee (Sinbad) a letter carrier who seeks the same as him, and between them arises a stark struggle as others go after the same gift, the object is scarce, there is only room for one.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IdRtRjFEDA)

At some point they meet and there is room for a coffee chat, but they fight again to have the Turbo Doll. For Howard reality sets in, he can't get the action figure even though he went to many businesses, shopping malls, contests, did some very ridiculous things and got in trouble with the law.

Produced by Chris Columbus starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rita Wilson, Jake Lloyd (Anakin Skywalker as a child), and comic Sinbad as an obnoxious antagonist.

Howard Langston is a man who spends too much time working and neglects the basic activities of living with his family. Liz (Rita Wilson) his wife, questions Howard about whether he bought the toy that the child (his son Jamie), wants for Christmas, as he asked months before, there the protagonist gets us as an audience to identify with him because at some point in our lives we have forgotten and left for the last moment the purchase of a gift.

Schwarzenegger's character is in danger of losing his family because of his lack of interest and his workaholism. In addition, Ted (Phil Hartman), the divorced neighbor, constantly seeks to win over his wife.

At the film's climax during the Christmas parade, confusion and circumstance cause Howard to don the Turbo-Man suit, and it is only then that Schwarzenegger is at his most comfortable onscreen. The viewer feels the same joy as the main character when he finally gets to lift the coveted glowing red action figure.

Jingle All the Way, is a Christmas film with not very good performances, but it is entertaining and I can say that it is good (cult, some would say).

The movie is a comedy, this actor is great in both action movies and comedies, who would have thought that a man of such size and muscles could make us laugh so much, I think it's partly due to the contrast he generates, he has a very expressive face where he exaggerates the expressions in a very funny way, it is always fun to see him in trouble and this is the movie where the circumstances get so complicated, that we can see him in different duels but where his muscles would not make him win otherwise his wit, each of these very funny.

It is a film that has Christmas as its context, he plays the role of a family man who is very addicted to work and this complicates his relationship with both his partner and his son, since he completely forgets to buy the figure toy of Turboman's action, which is what his son wants for Christmas, this is a serious mistake because the toy has been a sales success of the season and is sold out in all stores, even so this father begins a journey full of very funny tricks to get a Turboman for your son.

    image.png

In this film the father has no choice but to go to crowded stores where he is given a numbered ball to release the available toy copies, it is difficult even not to fight with other people to get a chance with a number, this huge man even We see him get into children's games to find the ball that he has lost, it is very funny how he finds a postman who is in the same situation as him and together they become rivals in search of the same toy, it is so difficult to A search that is even related to a network of toy dealers led by people dressed as Santa Claus, the accumulation of hilarious scenes so great that it is impossible not to laugh.

This movie is already quite old, you could say that in the past I found it a bit annoying that they will show it so many times on TV at Christmas time, but last year at Christmas I watched it on with my 7-year-old son and my nephew who is now 9 years old, it was a very special moment where the three of us laughed a lot and spent quality time together, the children loved the movie and it also has an important message for children, in a certain way it teaches them not to be so whimsical by asking for toys out of reach of their parents, but it also teaches parents to be more responsible with the fulfillment of their promises, because family time is more valuable than the toy itself, because what the protagonist learns is not only getting a toy, he learns that his addition to work has caused him to neglect his family and it is necessary for him to change and spend more time with them.

  5. 'Jingle All The Way' by Brian Levant Review: A typical Christmas film from the 90s@namiks1279d

    vlcsnap-2022-12-27-21h30m16s160.png

I haven't been watching a whole lot over Christmas, but the other day I did sit down to watch something I wasn't sure I had seen before as a child. I had conflicted thoughts over similar films featuring the same actor, though eventually I realised I was thinking of the film Kindergarten Cop. This had me remember an era of family films that had come and gone, with nothing really similar replacing it in more recent days. The family film which is in fact made for everyone, but doesn't feel forced or leaning in much of a direction. It comes and goes, not trying to be more than it needs to be. This period of Hollywood mostly utilising familiar faces under what we used to assume were A list celebrities. Around 2010 was the last time I recall seeing similar films, where action hero type actors would get family film roles with relatively decent budgets, something I believe relied more on DVD sales than the blockbuster ticket sales. While I'm sure such films are still being made and instead going straight to streaming services, I can't help but still feel that the film industry should return to the structure of making cheaper, shorter films that perhaps are less ambitious, but tell simple stories.

In the case of Brian Levant's Jingle All The Way, I couldn't help but admire the simplicity it had. As it told a story that felt festive, wholesome, and comedic in ways that would benefit varying ages. Though far from being something you would expect to be winning any awards, but does that matter? If anything I found it more impactful than most films that do actually win awards! Anyway, Brian Levant's Jingle All The Way felt like a glimpse into an era long-gone, where films following it in a similar nature had shifted and adapted to more modern expectations and situations. Though I'd argue this isn't a good thing. Watching Jingle All The Way was almost like seeing into a time capsule from the past that revealed a society certainly healthier. Which is strange to be able to say about a family film from the 90s! Don't worry, though, I will elaborate on this soon.

    Jingle All The Way

    vlcsnap-2022-12-27-21h30m10s568.png

The idea behind Jingle All The Way is simple, and far from unique. It tells the story of an overworked father that unfortunately has missed much of the events most important to his son. A common theme in these types of movies, where the father has their call to action and realises what is most important to them, and thus embarks on an adventure to right the many wrongs and seek redemption. This father, Howard, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, realises his time for obtain the one gift his son really wants for Christmas has ended. The holiday is here, and the popular action hero toy is selling out like crazy, leaving only extreme measures to be chased after in attempt to obtain a model. This sends him all around the town in search for these few models that can be obtained in various ways: winning a radio show, winning a raffle by obtaining a specific coloured ball in the mall, as well as falling for schemes surrounding the black market of toys where cheaply made copies are circulating in sketchy warehouses full of Santas and elves.

Our adventure throughout town is met with a mail man that in turn has also struggled to find a model for his own son, leading to the two characters having a comedic conflict with each other as they both run to and from various locations and run into each other, trying to stop each other from winning for their own benefit. For the most part, this sort of aspect of the film pertains to the comedic style aimed more for the children. The humour is a bit more slapstick. Which brings me to the more adult side of the film: humour. It surprised me that a big portion of the film surrounded the marriage itself, and the entry of a single, but seemingly well sought-after father that seems to tick off all the boxes to the nearby women of the area. This man certainly getting too close to the wife, flirting around, clearly pushing limits and agitating. This character, Ted, was played by Phil Hartman, who did a pretty good job as acting as this sleazy individual that's trying to break into marriages with some signs of weakness.

This promotes a more crude humour in such moments, where the dialogue references more adult themes. We see innuendos throughout, as well as more direct statements; in one moment we see Howard phoning home to be met with Ted answering, Howard asking where his wife is, and Ted stating that he believes she's in the shower, but he can go and check. Little snippets of dialogue such as this are delivered in ways that are clearly intended for the more adult members of the family, but in a way I found it quite cool to see how it juggled various themes and didn't seem to be afraid to surprise. Howard being called a pervert in the mall for trying to steal something from a child in a ball pit, and even the mail man attempting to make claims that he was holding explosive devices. I knew I was watching a film that would not be made today in its more softer climate, but it made me appreciate the film much more. And the film isn't even very good!

Though it's the idea of family and connection that I found rather interesting in the film, and somewhat ignored in today's more modern family films. Where weakness in relationships result in an epiphany and thus change, one that avoids conflict, but also promotes a healthy family. The film's conclusion quickly spans over the idea that Christmas doesn't need to be riddled with consumerism, nor does consumerism display a person's true feelings for their loved ones. Extending beyond Christmas, it has a narrative that shows that the greatest strength within family is simply just being present. Forgetting about the unimportant parts of life like work and what toys you buy your children. You just know that these days the film would've been made with a divorced couple and the father has to fight his way back into his child's life now that there's a stepfather figure present, effectively displaying a broken home.

    Directing

    vlcsnap-2022-12-27-21h30m27s035.png

For the type of film that it is, I did notice some interesting styles of directing. The way the camera would zoom in and warp the background to heighten a moment of tension, or how the camera would show unique perspectives of the characters and environment. Though the film doesn't display a whole lot of movement, much of the action shots are filmed with a still camera, or from afar in which much of the action can be pieced together with different angles and cuts. Sometimes revealing more of the environment that the characters engage within. It has a very typical 90s style to it, but I can't say that's necessarily a negative, but not really a positive either. It does what it needs to, and it does it well enough to get the point across and tell its story. Perhaps the critics were a bit too harsh on the film. I don't think the review scores are entirely justified. Especially compared to today where films with 4x the budget with similar styles are supposedly masterpieces now.

  6. Jingle All the Way, another classic Christmas movie.@gorayii1647d

    Source

    Hello, hello, my dear cinephiles.

Although it was not in my plans to spend these days reading, watching movies and series, it was time, so I have taken the opportunity to catch up with many works that I had pending, and also to review those that are a classic of these dates, on Christmas Eve it would be unforgivable not to remember the classics, especially when they have made us run against the clock so that the long-awaited Christmas gift is just in time under the tree.

On a day like today, several years ago, back in 1996, Howard Langston played by Arnold Schwarzenegger got on everyone's nerves, because he promised a special Christmas gift for his son, but got caught up in the multiple responsibilities of his job and forgot to buy the gift on time. That wouldn't be a problem in a city full of toy stores unless the gift was the most coveted doll of all children for Christmas, the superhero Turbo Man.

    Source

Unfortunately, Howard not only forgot to get the promised gift for his little son but also assured his wife that he already had it in his possession, that he had everything under control. Pious lies to justify an oversight that could ruin a child's Christmas illusion, especially when dad has been known for constantly failing to keep his promises. But Howard is not the only dad who needs at all costs to get a Turbo Man doll, so he will have to fight for the only one available in the store, negotiate behind the scenes a fraudulent purchase, compete in raffles and contests, all in order to get the doll. Although initially, the quest for Turbo Man was nothing more than a compromise, it soon becomes an obsession for Howard, as he does not want a disappointment at Christmas for little Jamie (his son) to cause him future frustrations that will make him a failed and unhappy man in the future.

After undertaking several desperate and not at all audacious actions to get a Turbo Man for Jamie, the tormented father decides to attend the Christmas parade that he knows his little son will attend, fortuitously he is mistaken for the actor who will play the great Turbo Man who would also have the opportunity to give a doll to a child in the parade, however, as I already mentioned, he was not the only father willing to do anything to deliver the promised gift to his son, which triggers a whole show for the audience in which reality and spectacle intersect.

After the crazy adventures of his father, Jamie discovers something that has much more value than a simple doll, he discovers his father being the superhero he wanted so much, so in his generous heart, he decides that another child will receive a Turbo Man as a gift that night.

I have seen and enjoyed this movie many times, I still find it beautiful, at a time when an actor like Arnold Schwarzenegger represented the rudeness of cinema for his action roles, having enjoyed this different facet was pleasing. In addition, the final message is really touching, a child who despite the desire he had for a toy decides to give that moment of happiness to another child because he simply got a gift of true value that transcends the material.

Right now I can think of many Howard wanting to beat time to make their children happy this Christmas Eve, overcoming all kinds of obstacles in order to give smiles and illusion to their little ones; however, there are gifts that are neither bought nor sold, those that are born from the heart, that are translated into love and dedication, those that leave an indelible mark on our loved ones.

I doubt that 25 years after the premiere of this film some of you have not seen it, but if that is the case, it is a good time to enjoy it with the family in the quiet and warmth of home. Jingle All the Way represents one of those classics that we see over and over again this holiday season, whose story is enjoyed and appreciated.

Today I am going to tell you about one of the best Christmas films I have ever seen, except for some excellent cartoon productions.

Mainly because the main actor, our well-known Terminator started doing this series of films when the jadedness of action movies arrived, the superhero destroying everything, invincible.

The human aspect of this film is so great and so well made out of a very, very simple fact that not even the Terminator can compete with the charm of Arnold Schwarzenegger who plays a father unable to get the doll his son wants as a Christmas present.

You can find this film under different names in the movie theatres (will the names of the films ever be unified for all Spanish speaking countries)?

Jingle All the Way in Spain it is known as Un Padre en Apuros. In Spanish America, on the other hand, it has been known as Un regalo Prometido o Resuena Todo el Camino (a decidedly strange name).

But anyway, let's leave these trifles aside and move on to the review of the film with which I am participating in the Context organised by this Community and whose rules of participation can be found in this post.

The main character Howard Langston (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a workaholic man who never has time to spend with his family, even on special occasions such as his children's school parties.

On one occasion he remembers his son's karate class at the last minute, gets caught in rush hour traffic and is consequently late.

To make matters worse, in his haste to arrive on time, he commits several traffic offences while trying to outrun other vehicles and is fined by the police officer (played by Robert Conrad).

When he arrives home he tries to apologise to his son, arguing that he was so absorbed by work that he remembered the appointment at the last minute and that the traffic was so heavy that he was unable to arrive on time despite having tried, to the point where he was fined for speeding and dangerous driving manoeuvres.

To correct the mistake, he tells his son to order whatever he wants for Christmas. To apologise, he will give it to him.

His son asks for a very simple gift: a Turbo-Man doll, a superhero in fashion at the time.

Howard thinks he's taken a cheap shot at his son, as the gift is so simple and doesn't even cost that much.

What he doesn't realise is the difficulties he'll have in getting it.

Near Christmas his wife (played by Rita Wilson), knowing her husband's forgetfulness about his family obligations, asks him if he has bought the doll for Jamie - his son - who had ordered it weeks ago.

As usual Howard had forgotten with the excuse that he still had time to buy it. He lies, says he has and begins to look for it with some trepidation because he realises that the toy, which is in great demand among children, has disappeared from practically all the shop windows.

Christmas Eve arrives without him having been able to get the toy he had been longing for.

But even so, he continues to lie to his family, saying that he has bought it and has it in his office. He assures them that they will have it for the winter parade. At that parade Turbo-Men will make an appearance.

On his wanderings through the shops he arrives at a toy store not far from his home where a long line of customers are waiting to be served for last minute Christmas shopping.

In that queue he meets Myron Larabee (played by Sinbad), a somewhat eccentric postman who, like him, is looking for a Turbo-Men for his son.

However, when the shop opens and a crowd of parents, like him in distress, rush in to do their last Christmas shopping, he discovers that all the dolls are sold out.

In desperation Howard and Myron ask the clerk who had sold the last Turbo-Men and he points them to a lady. When she sees them approaching, she thinks they are trying to rob her and escapes in her car.

On the way out, Howard runs into his neighbour Ted (Phil Hartman), a divorced father who is coveted by all the single mothers in his neighbourhood, whom Howard hates, as he is always meddling in the affairs of his house.

From then on, a real fight begins between both parents to try to monopolise the toy.

After a thousand misadventures, Howard gets the toy for his son, who, seeing all the trouble his father has had to go through to get it for him, returns it to him.

Shocked, the father asks his son why he is giving it back to him if it was the toy he wanted so much, to which Jamie replies that he doesn't need any doll because he has the real Turbo-Men at home.

Jingle All The Way (Or the promised gift, as we know it in Latin America) is a film with which I have a quite special relationship, to the point that I consider that it would be almost impossible to approach it objectively, since I was a child I was a Tradition to see it year after year with my father and my brothers every time Christmas approached, this caused that every frame, every joke and every moment of action was burned into my subconscious as if it were the very essence of these festivities.

However, after my most recent viewing I was pleasantly surprised: Although it is not a perfect film, there is much more thematic density than it appears on the surface.

Released in 1996 and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jake Lloyd (Yes, The Child of The Phantom Menace), under the direction of Brian Levant, in a summarized way Jingle All The Way is an emotional story of a father who decides to look at the last minute for the Your child's Christmas gift, a Turbo-Man - that year's most coveted toy.

Howard Langston is a careless father, he loves his son but has let his work responsibilities overshadow everything else, Jingle All The Way manages to tactfully balance a critique of consumerism and the American work ethic, without the need to fall into dialogue pretentious or the typical and ironic attacks on capitalism that usually flood this type of work.

Although its conflict does not translate very well to our present day (Let's consider that children's toys are no longer as attractive as they used to be and that technology has facilitated Christmas shopping), there is a certain timelessness in their execution that invites us to enjoy it.

Filled with silly dialogue and easily fixable problems, Jingle All The Way is a movie where even every negative point is charismatic.

For many it may be a mediocre product, for me it is a point of connection with a past moment in my life that I remember with great affection wrapped in a very funny movie.
