For those in the know, Junji Ito is a name that resonates in the minds of those who are lovers of the horror genre, especially Japanese horror, which this great mangaka took to new corners of the world, in addition to creating stories with characters that would make anyone pee their pants because of how terrifying they are. In this opportunity, we will talk about one of the collections of mini horror stories popularly known of this great master of the genre. Produced by Deen Studio, this is the first of two animated adaptations in the form of collections that currently exist (the second, Junji Ito: Maniac, I already reviewed some time ago for this community). Plot
As I mentioned at the beginning, this is a collection of several short stories by Junji Ito. There are 12 chapters in which each chapter has 2 mini horror stories, making a total of 24 different adaptations.
Below is a summary of what you will see in each chapter:
- A spoiled brat of a boy seeks to get away with performing curses on his classmates. A couple's daughter has been turned into a doll.
- A group of young people are looking for the perfect model for their horror movie. A man has fallen into a coma due to a dream that lasted too long.
- A rumor among girls tells that at a crossroads on a street you can tell who you will date. A high school girl can't speak properly because she feels something nasty will come out of her mouth.
- A boy's neighbor is constantly visited by a doctor to treat her strange disease that causes holes to appear all over her body. A family of puppeteers travel non-stop to perform events.
- In a house people appear and disappear for some strange reason. The teacher of an elementary school class is... a rag doll.
- A newly moved-in family realizes that the house next door has only one sale. A girl dreams every time she loses her father and wants him to live forever.
- A record with no name, no author and no cover is the most desired of all. A girl looking to escape from her family finds herself in a city with no streets.
- A boy manages to take his partner to visit his family with intentions of getting married. A strange circus comes to town with hapless clowns and workers.
- A proud portrait painter meets a beautiful girl who asks him to be her Muse. A couple has an accident in the middle of the forest where they meet a group of strange children.
- A girl who loves clean spaces lives in a filthy, grease-filled house. An elderly lady's granddaughter goes to visit but encounters a horrible specter on a bridge.
- A transfer student joins the school's paranormal club. At a funeral, the husband of the deceased is rejected by the unwilling father who places a scarecrow on his daughter's grave.
- A scout shows a large jar of honey that he stole from a tribe of Indians. Rumors of all kinds are heard at school which makes people change their minds about the most hated boy in their class.

Tal y como lo mencioné al principio, esta es una colección de varias historias cortas de Junji Ito. Son 12 capítulos en los cuales cada uno cuenta con 2 mini historias de terror, lo cual hace un total de 24 adaptaciones diferentes.
A continuación, les dejaré un resumen de lo que verán en casa capitulo:
- Un malcriado chico busca salirse con la suya realizando maldiciones a sus compañeros de clase. La hija de una pareja se ha convertido en una muñeca.
- Un grupo de jóvenes buscan a la modelo perfecta para su película de terror. Un señor ha entrado en coma por un sueño demasiado largo.
- Un rumor entre chicas cuenta que en un cruce de una calle puedes saber con quién saldrás. Una chica de preparatoria no puede hablar bien porque siente que algo desagradable saldrá de su boca.

The previous time I talked about one of the adaptations of Junji Ito's famous stories to anime I was very excited to think about how fantastic it was to see each episode and each story so bizarre, grotesque, disturbing and at the same time surprising. But then and with time and the recent case of the animated adaptation of Uzumaki (another famous work of the great mangaka) I realized an infallible detail in the works of this great creator of horror stories. The detail is that: it is impossible to transmit 100% of his great works to the world of anime. And it is true that many have talked about the bad adaptations and the problems there were in the past with previous works like this one we are talking about tonight. But, personally, I think that not always happens what fans of a manga expect with an anime adaptation. There are few examples of works that have been adapted very well both in anime and in movies based on manga or novels. But, in this particular case it is not so, because although it complies with the complex visual details and unique style that the "Master of Horror" has in each of his works, it will always lack the development of his characters or telling a story well.

La vez anterior que hablé de una de las adaptaciones de las famosas historias de Junji Ito al anime tuve mucha ilusión al pensar en lo fantástico que fue ver cada episodio y cada historia tan bizarra, grotesca, inquietante y a la vez sorprendente. Pero luego y con el tiempo y el reciente caso de la adaptación animada de Uzumaki (otra famosa obra del gran mangaka) me di cuenta de un detalle infalible en las obras de este gran creador de historias de terror. El detalle es que: es imposible transmitir al 100% sus grandiosas obras al mundo del anime. Y es cierto que muchos han hablado de las malas adaptaciones y los problemas que hubo en el pasado con anteriores obras como esta que hablamos la noche de hoy. Pero, personalmente, opino que no siempre sucede eso que esperan los fans de un manga con una adaptación animada. Son escasos los ejemplos de obras que se han adaptado muy bien tanto en el anime como en películas basadas en mangas o novelas. Pero, en este particular no es así, ya que si bien cumple con los complejos detalles visuales y estilo único que tiene el “Maestro del Terror” en cada una de sus obras, siempre faltará el desarrollo de sus personajes o el contar bien una historia.

This happened with this unexpected first collection by Junji Ito, because although on a visual level it is clear that the Deen Studio made an effort to adapt the work almost 100% as in the manga, it did not achieve the level of fluidity or detail that people expected or deserved the work itself. In this case, while it's not the best animation in the world, it at least delivers in terms of drawing attention to some details, at least in certain important moments. Then there's the detail of the short running time of all the stories, feeling at times like they're doing a recap rather than a proper or deserved adaptation of the original work. I'm not one to criticize animated adaptations too much, but one thing I have learned in the short time I've had reflecting on Junji Ito's adaptations is that his stories deserved better.
Likewise, I'm not saying that this anime is all bad, since being a collection or compilation of only some of the mangaka's popular works we can enjoy the appearance of recognized characters and stories that are practically unforgettable. For those new to Junji Ito's work, watching this anime is like getting to know a new and different world of horror in its most grotesque, disturbing and surprising form with scenes, characters and endings that leave you with a strange feeling in your stomach and head. Another of the things I love about these stories is the variety they have in going from telling a supernatural or curse story with a somewhat crude black humor to then telling us a suspenseful story with a mystery that leads to something macabre and most disturbing. There are also those characters that at first glance can leave you sleepless or with nightmares every night, with figures, bodies and shapes that are taken from hell itself. And the cosmic horror that sometimes tells the occasional story of places with secrets and strange and unexplained things that even science can't give an answer to is also fascinating.

Con esta primera colección inesperada de Junji Ito ocurrió esto, ya que si bien a nivel visual se ve que el estudio Deen se esforzó por adaptar casi al 100% la obra como en el manga, no consiguió el nivel de fluidez o de detalles que la gente esperaba o merecía la obra en sí. Al ser una mezcla de 24 historias cortas en una sola, es obvio que cortaron y resumieron algunas de estas para conseguir hacer una simple muestra audiovisual de la obra original. Tal parece que esto fue hecho para que vayas corriendo a ver el manga en vez de quedarte a ver más el anime. Claro, no es como el caso del segundo capítulo de Uzumaki que literalmente es una completa estafa y una burla directa de parte de Adult Swim y Netflix tanto a la obra como a su creador y a sus fans con esa terrible animación. En este caso, si bien no es la mejor animación del mundo, al menos cumple con llamar la atención en cuanto a algunos detalles, al menos en ciertos momentos importantes. Luego, está el detalle del corto tiempo que tienen todas las historias, sintiendo a veces que están haciendo un resumen en vez de una adaptación adecuada o merecida de la obra original. No soy de criticar mucho a las adaptaciones animadas, pero algo sí he aprendido en este poco tiempo que he tenido reflexionando sobre las adaptaciones de Junji Ito y es que sus historias merecían algo mejor.
Igualmente, no digo que esté del todo mal este anime, ya que al ser una colección o recopilación de solo algunas de las obras populares del mangaka podemos disfrutar de la aparición de personajes reconocidos y de historias que son prácticamente inolvidables. Para los nuevos que no conocen el trabajo de Junji Ito, ver este anime es como conocer un mundo nuevo y diferente de lo que es horror en su forma más grotesca, inquietante y sorprendente con escenas, personajes y finales que te dejan con una sensación extraña en el estómago y en la cabeza. Otra de las cosas que me encantan de estas historias es la variedad que tienen al pasar de contar una historia sobrenatural o de maldiciones con un humor negro un tanto crudo a luego contarnos una historia de suspenso con un misterio que desemboca a algo macabro y de lo más perturbador. También están esos personajes que a simple vista pueden dejarte sin sueño o con pesadillas seguras todas las noches, con figuras, cuerpos y formas que son sacados del mismo infierno. Y el horror cósmico que a veces cuenta alguna que otra historia de lugares con secretos y cosas extrañas y sin explicación que ni la ciencia puede dar respuesta alguna es también fascinante.

On the side of telling unique, interesting and unforgettable stories, Junji Ito earns the best grade of all, as he does so by developing quite mysterious characters with secrets and origins so macabre that it is beyond the imagination of any human being. However, in terms of story, each episode often lacks that development or context that is always good in every beginning and not just give a poor monologue with many doubts and questions in the air. Since everything is left to the interpretation of each one, not much can be done to draw lessons or any moral to these short stories, although it is not always the case since there is one or the other that is the exception. Otherwise, I have no complaints about the way in which this anime captures the viewer in an excellent way with these short stories that cause curiosity and tension. Finally, in terms of technical aspects, I have already mentioned the studio's effort to adapt each work as much as possible, but in terms of fluidity and details in the drawings and many of the shots we see, it leaves much to be desired. The sound effects are good, giving each scene that feeling of uneasiness, suspense and horror that tries to show us, as does its soundtrack. Although as for the Opening and Ending, there's nothing to say as I don't like them at all. In the end, it's just a good collection for a night of horror.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the horror genre is concerned.

De resto, no tengo queja alguna de la forma en la que este anime captura de forma excelente a su espectador con estos cortos que causan curiosidad y tensión. Por último, en cuanto a lo técnico ya he mencionado el esfuerzo que tuvo el estudio de adaptar lo más que pudieron cada obra, pero en cuanto a fluidez y detalles en sus dibujos y muchos de los planos que vemos, deja mucho que desear. Los efectos de sonido están bien, dándole a cada escena esa sensación de inquietud, suspenso y horror que intenta mostrarnos, al igual que lo hace su banda sonora. Aunque en cuanto al Opening y el Ending, no hay nada que decir ya que no me gustan en lo absoluto. Al final, es solo una buena colección para una noche de terror nomás.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror.

I mentioned incest and there is a strong reference here and the episode about oil. A young girl lives with her brother and father in a small house where her brother drinks oil and drinks in such quantities that she slowly begins to change. A strong and ambiguous episode because many scenes are actually sexualization of the hero. It is worth watching how this episode full of oil and pimples ends. In 12 episodes we get a whole misha of macabre and an atmosphere torn alive from Lovecraft's prose, from crawling rows of skulls to a murderous tree and ending with the world's ugliest model who likes to snack on herself. 
Jealousy can refer to the episode with Tomie, where the title Tomie wants to look perfect, whether in a picture or as a sculpture, but no artist can cope with such beauty, which turns on jealousy. Although this anime does not reject this line, you can get used to the slightly strange eyes and behavior of the characters. The heroes have all kinds of adventures, they will meet strange characters only to die in an unbelievable way. This is my first contact with anime in 15 years and it made a ravishing impression on me. I absorbed these 12 episodes like oxygen during a pandemic;)
