CineTV Contest: Raiders of the Lost Ark - How to Impress a 5-year-old@stortebeker482d
I'm back to CineTV, responding to its current contest, asking about our favorite movie from our childhood. Seeing the prompt, I didn't have to think much about the answer. It's hard to say what the first film was that I got to see, or even the first time I went to a movie theater. Everything tends to bled together in the murkiness of childhood memories. However, I can most definitely remember the first time a movie left a deep impression on me.
The year was 1984, the place a backwater town on the Hungarian plains, and yours truly had recently turned five. Though I would not call my upbringing sheltered, my parents tended to be quite strict on what they allowed me to see. Their reasons were probably the typical, not wanting to expose me to tons of violence, even if just visually. However, to me they explained this by claiming they were protecting me from nightmares, and weirdly even films like E.T. or Star Wars could potentially cause bad dreams. So I had to wait a couple of years - actually until we got a VCR - before I could see those iconic films.
My uncle on the other hand did not prescribe to my parent's philosophy, and one evening when he was asked to take care of me, he took me to the cinema. We walked through heavy snowfall to this shabby old place with only one screening room, but they were showing Raiders of the Lost Ark, which I suppose my uncle wanted to see anyway. So before entering the theater he made me promise on all things holy and important to a 5-year-old, that I would not tell my parents that he took me to the movies. I loved the secrecy, and I swore I would never say a word. Satisfied with my sincerity, my uncle led the way in.
We had missed the first minutes, but this didn't bother me at all, since we got thrown right into the middle of an exotic jungle scene, with enormous spiders crawling on the guy's back. This, I remember, was already enough to consider this film worthwhile of seeing, but it only got better. Treasures of gold protected by intricate traps that our hero barely escaped from, including the giant boulder rolling through the tunnel. I was in a deep state of suspense, and this was only the first scene!
The film came to our cinema a few years late, and even then undubbed, and even without subtitles. Not that any of this mattered, since I could not read anyway, and had I heard the dialogues in my native Hungarian, they probably wouldn't have made much sense to my five-year-old mind. Occasionally I asked my uncle, but I think his English was not much better either. Or at least he didn't bother explaining to me what Nazis were, or the story of this weird box they were looking for. I did not mind too much, since the film kept piling up one mind-blowing visual after the next. It took us from the tropical forest to some frozen mountaintop, and eventually to the desert. And in each place more amazing action was to take place. At some point my young mind must have reached saturation, and eventually sensory overload.
By the time we reached the scene where the bad guy's face melted from his skull, with his eyeballs rolling out, I was way beyond getting scared. It was yet another ohhh, and ahhh, and wowww... though at the same time I remember my parents' warnings popping into my mind. Was this one of those things that would cause nightmares? I could certainly see where they were coming from, but I also remember thinking that I had such a great time this evening, experiencing so any incredible things, that seeing a melting face in my dreams might be a small price to pay for it. In any case, I was too busy enjoying the memories of the film to be too worried about it.
As we walked home from the cinema it was still snowing. I could not stop talking about this extraordinary film I just saw, including aquaplanes (another feature I remember that impressed me a lot), pyramids, and hidden treasures with their riches and curses. My uncle was obviously happy that I was not traumatized by his decision to go against the wishes of my parents. Because one thing was clear: Keeping my promise and my mouth shut about the film was way beyond my capabilities. And so it did not take very long for my parents to find out... I guess it was that same evening.
They were not upset, at least not with me, though my uncle might have gotten his tongue-lashing, since this ended up being also the last time he took me to see a movie. But for the time being I was grateful to him, because it gave me loads of stuff to discuss with my kindergarten mates. As for the nightmares, I can't say that I didn't have any, but at least none of them had anything to do with this Indiana Jones movie.
For the next coming years, this remained among my top favorite experiences, and though I never managed to remember its admittedly weird and complicated title, I considered it to be my favorite movie. Only much later - I must have been around ten or eleven I guess - did I put things into perspective, when I saw Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. By then its context made much more sense to me, and I could immerse myself into the story itself among all the spectacular scenes. Most importantly, I kept recalling how much I enjoyed the first film of the trilogy, which even today remains pretty high up among my favorites.
Karen Allen is the brilliant actress who delighted us with her portrayal of Marion Ravenwood in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
Marion, inspired by classic adventure film heroines, was indeed an independent and non-submissive character.
Now let's talk about Indiana Jones. Apparently, Lucas and Spielberg didn't want him to be tied down to any long-term relationship, like a commitment-phobic James Bond with a new adventure in every instalment.
So they decided to create a tense, conflict-filled relationship between Marion and Indy.
Their reunion begins with a line that is apparently controversial today: "In the last ten years, I've learned to hate you. I was a child. I was in love. It was wrong, and you knew it".
It seems even Indy has some explaining to do. Some have suggested that Indiana Jones is some sort of "young girl molester".
But fear not, Karen Allen was quick to come to Indy's defence, arguing that we don't really know what happened in the past and that the circumstances might have been different.
She also reminds us that these characters are fictional and the situations are dictated by the script. v
Ah, a timeless classic. If you are my age then this was a film you'd have grown up with in your youth. Indiana Jones. I was surprised I was allowed to watch it knowing that there was Nazi's and horror stuff at the end. But realistically parents didn't really protect us from adult scenes back when we were young, so we got to see everything in its glorious horror detail. Thankfully though, this was quite tame for its time.
The film starts off with a young adventurer, Indy, short for Indiana, an explorer, or so we think. He's dressed like an explorer, acts like an explorer, and is equipped with all the types of equipment he'd need.. as an explorer. We watch as he tries to break into an ancient tomb with traps and devices that could kill you if you make one false move.
But thankfully our dear Indy makes it to the precious artifact unscathed, and tries to guess the weight of it so that it doesn't trigger any trap door. But just as we think Indy has gotten away with it, all hell breaks loose and a massive wrecking ball comes down from the ceiling.
After what seems to be a lifetime of jumping through lots of traps, Indy finally makes it to the outside to which he is met by several natives all pointing their spears at him. He is relieved of his treasure and escapes via plane on the river.
Next we learn that Indy isn't an explorer, but a history professor at an esteemed American college. He just does exploring in his part time, and for when he wants to pick up ancient artifacts to study and bring home.
And thus is the beginning of a newfound series which spans across thirty years and at least 7 films. This one is the best though in my opinion because there seems like there is more meat to this film than in many of the others. There's just more travelling, more treasure, and more storyline.
In this first installment of the series we're met with Marion. A lovely girl, who I must admit I thought looked a bit like a man when I was a kid, but she really is pretty looking at her now when I'm in my 40's. I casn see why she was cast.
This is the start of a long fight with the Nazi's because if you're a fan of wartime history then you'll know that Hitler was crazy about the occult and was always trying to grab artifacts to advance his theories and wacky practices. So it turns out that Raiders of the lost ark, whilst fantasy, wasn't that far away from the truth!
But nevertheless, this is my favourite film of the series. Considering the Ark of the Covenant has always been one of my favourite stories from Christian literature. It has everything in it, from Nazi's, to lost artifacts, to hidden tombs. You'll definitely not be let down if you decide to give this one a watch.
This is my entry into the CineTV contest 91, Favorite Christmas Movie. The link is here.
Name - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Released - 2023
Director - James Mangold
This week's contest about your favorite christmas movie and at christmas time people are usually watching some of the classic films like Home Alone or Back to the Future. Among those classics for me would be to watch some Indiana Jones movies.
Who can beat some classic Indy searching for the lost ark and the memorable scene when they open it. There is also the Last Crusade with the brilliant Sean Connery who really made that film as Indy's Dad.
However, this year on Disney they have the newest version of Indy made this year called the Dial of Destiny, so I thought I would give it a watch instead and give my review.
The film starts off with our favorite action hero Indy deep behind enemy lines searching for stolen artifacts when he comes face to face with the films new foe Jürgen Voller played by the currently very popular Mads Mikkelsen who seems to be in everything at the moment!
The film has everything you would expect from an Indy film and pretty much rehashes all the old stunts from all the previous films. Indy with insects, Indy fighting on a train, Indy wrestling bad guys in a car chase, aeroplane and on and on it goes.
It is a classic cat and mouse game he plays getting caught by Jüegen, but escaping at the last minute. It does take some stretching of the imagination though as he is now 81 years old and does look it in the film. However, the film is a pure nostaligic easy watching flick for Indy fans and I guess this doesn't matter.
Similar to many of the other actors his age rehashing their major hits like Tom Cruise in Top Gun, Harrison dons the hat and whip for Indy once more. Unlike with Keanu Reeves who didn't want to make a rehash of The Matrix, Harrison seems more happy in the role though.
At times the film comes across as an old school reunion with many of your favorite Indy characters making an appearance like the awesome Sallah who still wears the same traditional egyptian hat from 30 years ago. I love the actor John Rhys-Davies who also starred in The Lord of the Rings. However, they don't really have any part of the storyline!
(spoiler alert)
The best part of the movie for me is the first train battle scene and it is the second half of the film (it is a long film) where they fly back in time and the fighting on the plane. You get to see some historical battle scenes as they fly around in planes with ancient battles taking place.
Overall it gave me that typical Christmas movie fayre where you could watch some of your favorite actors and do not think. Even Antonio Bandaras was in the movie.
Was it up to the standard of The Lost Ark? No, you can't beat the younger Harrison Ford, but it was still reasonably enjoyable.

"The greatest of all mysteries is man."(Socrates).
#
Throughout the history of mankind, human beings go from tingo to tango as we Venezuelans say, looking for their origins and enigmas. Mystery is what moves them, and they are always inventing problems if they do not have them, I think this is normal because we have a gene of madness, since ancient times, when they are annoyed they investigate and look for the five legs to the cat. Also if the egg came first or the chicken.
There are many lost things and enigmas that are still unknown to man, such as the ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail, Mary Magdalene, the philosopher's stone, the fountain of youth, the Bermuda triangle, the hairs of the frog, UFOs, the end of the bald rooster, as well as many other enigmas. But, they have no time to look for themselves and learn to connect with God and the Universe. This is another topic, I am here to talk about my friend Indy.
Believe it or not, I also like to understand many things to which there is no answer, I believe that this is the essence of the human being. One of the great enigmas of history is the Ark of the Covenant. From my crazy point of view or as my grandmother Bertita's used to say, this was to say that she was very annoying asking questions, she used to say:
-I don't know where she gets this nonsense from!
I think if she had motivated and supported me. I would have already published my first best seller. I've had a name for it for a long time: I don't have hair!... and what's the problem? Because abuelita was annoying and dismissive of the poor little frog's hair. OMG, excuse me, I always go off on a tangent, this is understandable, and it's not because of my age since I can remember I'm like that and it's my way of being as the song says.
The biggest enigma for me is the ark of the Covenant; for those who do not know what it is and its meaning:
"It is known that the Ark of the Covenant (also called the Ark of the Covenant or Ark of the Testimony) was a container that housed important relics for the people of Israel..."For more information visit aquí
I believe it contained more than the tablets of the Ten Commandments. It was the direct connection to the Universe and to God. Protected by rays of light coming from within. Only spiritually prepared human beings could and were allowed to approach the ark. Believe it or not, all people cannot communicate with God. They were selected good souls, without selfishness and with high vibrations.
I believe that the ark was able to sense the sensitivity and the level of spirituality of the people. These prepared individuals were able to sense the frequency. This is my point of view. If someday the Ark of the Covenant would be found it would be a great find for the history of mankind. This famous Ark inspired a 1980's film with my love, Harrison Ford, in his legendary character Indiana Jones or Indy.
OMG, my dear and beloved Indy faced many dangers in this film; arrows and poisoned darts, armed men, explosions, snakes and a woman scorned. You won't believe it, I only use the whip. I jump on a horse, on a donkey and from a vine.
I participated in the film "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark", my mission was to keep Indy's little hat from moving. It was very difficult and stressful. Imagine a man in constant motion. When he had to film with the snakes he was going crazy.
The Indy saga is very good, it was created by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. The first four were blockbusters; in the month of June number five was released, but I have not seen it. Forty-two years ago, in 1981, the second film in the saga of the adventures of Indiana Jones, "Raiders of the Lost Ark", was released. For about one hour and fifty minutes you can enjoy excitement and action.
Directed by the greatest in the history of cinema, Steven Spielberg. My friend Indi or Harrison Ford, with his little hat and whip, make this film unforgettable. Karen Allen and Paul Freeman also participated in this epic adventure. This film won four Academy Awards in 1982: Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Best Sound and Best Editing
Did you know?
"Raiders of the Lost Ark was the highest-grossing film of 1981, grossing more than $200 million in the United States alone."

The soundtrack was composed by the American John Williams, the greatest composer in the history of cinema; films such as Jaws, Star Wars, ET, Harry Potter, among others. Perhaps the new generations do not know about these unforgettable melodies, which have remained in the minds of moviegoers
Deep inside us dwells a soul that longs for adventure and dreams of being like Indy. And the imagination flies very high, when you watch the movies. Don't shy away and find ways to cheer yourselves up by enjoying one of their stories, as they are so much fun and interesting. Plus, it's a good therapy to calm anxieties and stress.
Friends of #Movies&Shows if you haven't seen and enjoyed Indy's adventures, I recommend them. For me the whole saga is great, today I brought you the review of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

#

›Review - Raiders of the Lost Ark@thunderjack1096d
Over the Fourth of July, my bonnie Bride and I decided it was a good time to watch Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) as it has been a very long time since either one of us have watched it. I’m not even sure if I’ve watched it in the current century, which is a bit of a surprise.
*Raiders of the Lost Ark* poster - [IMDB](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082971/mediaviewer/rm1675044097?ref_=ttmi_mi_all_pos_363)
Raiders, as just about everyone knows, is an awesome film that launched yet another great film franchise for Lucasfilms, with Steven Spielberg heading the project. At the time of its release, I don’t think anyone knew, except maybe the fans, that this film would spawn what is now a series of five films as well as a TV series (I have only seen a couple of episodes of the TV series), and cement Harrison Ford’s place as a roguish action hero super-star. Indeed, it is hard to imagine anyone else playing the role of Indiana Jones (except for the kid in Young Indiana Jones). No, I wasn’t one of them, never did do a Indiana Jones costume.
Raiders of the Lost Ark, being a period piece, works well and holds up for watching today, and continues to be a heck of a lot of fun to watch, being a blend of action, adventure, mystery and a bit of subtle humor (“Where doesn’t it hurt?”). Also, at that time, there was a deluge of guys breaking out beat-up Fedoras and roguish grins, just like so many others had been doing with Han Solo since the release of Star Wars in ‘77.
Special effects shot from Raiders - [IMDB](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082971/mediaviewer/rm790971648?ref_=ttmi_mi_all_sf_193)
Great acting, fantastic and unique story, cliffhangers (literally and figuratively), thrills and chills, and a lot of us went more than a couple of times during its original run. And who didn’t like seeing the evil villains melt? For the time it was made, that was some darn good special effects.
Down in Southern California, Raiders played at the same theater in Grossmont (east of San Diego) for over a year. Surprisingly, at a convention I was at in Los Angeles, Science Fiction Weekend ‘82, one of the execs from Lucasfilm was giving a talk, and mentioned we would be able to see Raiders again with its upcoming re-release. Then some of us mentioned that it was still playing at The Grossmont Theater, jogging his memory of having attended the one year birthday of Raiders playing there, complete with birthday cake. Sadly, shortly thereafter, Raiders was pulled from The Grossmont. But true to the exec’s word, it did show up in general release theaters shortly thereafter.
Photo of some fan-made props from *Raiders of the Lost Ark*
As a bit of fun, at some of the Science Fiction conventions we go to, there is a Propatorium, and there are usually a few cool items form various films, including some from Raiders. I believe they are all fan-made reproductions, and some pretty nice work.
So, well, taking advantage of the fact that a sequel was recently going to be released (Marking the return of Harrison Ford in the role of Indy, along with other new actors in the saga such as Mads Mikkelsen or Phoebe Waller-Bridges), I think that this was the perfect moment to see these classics for the first time, with the interesting addition of evaluating them from an "objective" perspective that would not be blinded by nostalgic love, although it is inevitable to feel respect for this eighties phenomenon that is so difficult to ignore.
And it is that the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" do not need more than 10 minutes to immerse ourselves in this world full of adventure, physical comedy and a subtle and unexpected pinch of terror.
Like other giants of the time such as Back to the Future or Star Wars (The original trilogy), Raiders of the Lost Arc is a film that takes advantage of its direction (Steven Spielberg in this case) as a blank canvas that creates a brand new language that, ironically, is built from so many elements from so many genres and sources that at least in theory shouldn't work, but in practice end up incredibly solid.
The result? A PG-13 flick that defies its own limits, adapting each of its audiovisual aspects to narrate a simple and fun adventure that, through many signs scattered throughout its duration, we understand that it was not Jones' first rodeo... Let alone the last one.
Unlike the bitter references and Easter eggs that we usually see in modern blockbusters, always obsessed with celebrating the past and shaping the future even if it is to the detriment of the present, Indiana Jones lets us see a group of iconic characters at a very specific time of to their lives, and always makes it clear that they have had experiences before we begin to observe them in a subtle but efficient way.
It's a silly detail to pay attention to, perhaps, but it's something that can overstretch our level of enjoyment, making a movie feel more like a movie and less like a slice of a (Sorry) drab amusement park.
The rest you should know by now, in Raiders of the Lost Arc we follow a young archaeologist named Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford in what was probably the height of his career.
Jones, although he works as a teacher during the day, is obsessed with the search for objects lost by ancient civilizations, something that often leads him to undertake quite dangerous expeditions throughout the world.
Ford, far from what we might expect from a man of action of the time, has a slightly more "uninhibited" and untidy nature, something that ends up making it inevitable to feel magnetism for his screen presence, even though he is essentially an idiot. .
Indiana Jones as a character is quite smart, yes, but he is also careless, his plans rarely go perfectly and he is far from a combat expert.
This point of vulnerability allows us to connect with his on a deeper level, gives it realism, and makes his wins carry more weight.
But although throughout this review I have been constantly referring to this film as an "adventure", the truth is that there is no genre that can perfectly sum up Raiders of the Lost Arc, and rather, it is a hodgepodge of many. styles... Producing absolute timelessness.
The timing of its "comic" moments is impeccable, the design of some sets and special effects are genuinely terrifying, and in the end, the music and the recurring use of large sets end up giving the events a quite epic scale.
Far from being my favorite movie, I admit, but now I fully understand why after 40 years people are still obsessed with the stories of this man and his whip.
›CONTEST: What is your favourite action movie? // “Indiana Jones en busca del arca perdida” // "Raiders of the Lost Ark" // Review and Opinions [ESP-ENG]@hylene741584d
Saludos de amigos de The Movies & TV Shows Community,
Greetings friends of The Movies & TV Shows Community,
I confess that I am not a big fan of action movies, but if there are some that manage to catch me, as did Raiders of the Lost Ark, titled in Spanish from Spain as, “In search of the lost ark”, later it was called “Indiana Jones in search of the lost ark”, and “Indiana Jones and the hunters of the lost ark” in Latin America.
The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by George Lucas, while the premiere of this great box office success was on June 12, 1981. This classic of the Action-Adventure genre, obtained the highest grossing of all time, entered the ranking of the best 500 films and won 5 Oscars. Its success was such that it led to other sequels with the same actor, Harrison Ford, who starred in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Skull of Cristal".
Sinopsis
Synopsis
The plot of this film was very interesting to me from the beginning, it dates back to the Nazi expansion, in 1936, under the command of the dictator, Adolf Hitler. The führer, in his desire for war and to obtain more power to achieve his goals, sent a troop to find the “Ark of the Covenant”. It is not just any ark, it contains numerous secrets, including the ten commandments, in addition to possessing supernatural powers. As the legend describes, it is capable of exterminating entire armies. The Government of the United States, knowing Hitler's purpose, wants to find it first, and for this purpose, they send the person they consider to be the right one, an Archeology Professor, Dr. Henry Jones, known as Indiana Jones.
In fulfillment of the mission for which he has been sent, "Indy" embarks on a journey that leaves him immersed in a series of adventures full of danger and lots of action.
At first, the film catches me after seeing Professor Jones in the South American jungles in the missive to find a golden idol. Indiana Jones teaches classes, but in his spare time he goes from expedition to expedition to find antiques.
In that first scene, “Indy” goes through a remote place, full of numerous traps, all deadly, he passes them all, he is betrayed by his companion who later dies and after finding the golden idol he loses it for save his life.
After the failed expedition, he returns to his "normal" life to teach classes. It is there when he is contacted for another expedition, to find the "Ark of the Alliance", but before that, he must face the Nazis.
After the first exciting scene in the search for the golden idol, the plot got a bit tedious, of course, I was like 12 years old when I saw it and I wanted to see more action like in the beginning. But now with more awareness, that part that he considered "annoying" revealed all the indications that Indiana Jones had to take into account to find his next target. Finding the ark was not an easy task, there was a map written in other languages and it was not easy to translate it. In addition, other factors came into play, where to start digging for example, so as not to waste time.
All of those elements were exciting, along with Indiana Jones's run-ins with the Nazis and of course, the seemingly terrifying secrets the ark held.
In my opinion, the script, the special effects and the settings were great. An unexpected ending is added, I always waited until the end to see what the ark would really reveal, just like the characters in the film. The scenes, in addition to being very exciting, some had a touch of comedy. It was not the typical action movie and nothing more, and that was just what gave it a special plus. Not in vain this production won 5 Oscars.
Personajes principales
Main characters.
Harrison Ford in the interpretation of Indiana Jones, Dr. Henry Jones, professor of archeology, was not satisfied with just teaching, he put his theory into practice, always immersed in expeditions and adventures in search of antiquities. A very bold, intelligent and cunning man, who managed to outwit the Nazi army. His performance was impeccable, leaving an indelible mark as Indiana Jones.
Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, is the daughter of Indiana Jones mentor Abner Ravenwood. She owns a bar and is also a former romantic interest of Jones. She owns a very valuable jewel, apparently it is a key piece to find the excavation site and find the ark. He overflows with his character a lot of sympathy.
Paul Freeman played Rene Belloq, who rivals Indiana Jones, is also an archaeologist and is hired by the Nazis to help them find the ark. However, his real goal is more that to guide them is to obtain the powers of the ark for their own benefit.
Ronald Lacey played the role of Major Toht, he is a member of the Nazi secret police, his mission is to find the precious medallion of Marion's family for being the object that he can decipher the location of the ark, with this amulet, it will be easy work, besides, he will gain leniency with the führer A man of few words and rather he seemed to me very cowardly.
John Rhys-Davies as Sallah, a friend of Indiana Jones, he considers himself one of the best in excavation matters, he helps him in the missive to find the ark.
Denholm Elliott as Dr. Marcus Brody, is the one who acts as an intermediary between Dr. Jones and the United States government to locate the ark. In a way, it is accomplice of Jones in his adventures, he owns the museum of antiquities where he keeps all the objects that Indy gets on his expeditions.
Wolf Kahler as Colonel Dietrich, commands Hitler's mission, is a ruthless Nazi colonel, I think that in those times they were like that, hard-hearted, without compassion for the neighbor and that behavior was reflected in the Nazi holocaust.
Alfred Molina played Satipo, for betraying Jones and stealing his golden idol, he dies because of one of the deadly traps in the temple. He accompanied Jones on that unsuccessful mission as one of his guides. Ambitious and bad person, when jones was in danger, he turned his back instead of helping.

Concusión final
Final concussion
The film teaches us that power unleashes more lust for power. "Great power leads to great responsibility", in a nutshell, you have to know how to use it. The Nazis wanted more power, but to destroy, and that's why they go after the "Ark of the Covenant". Personally, I think that sensible people should use power to do good and not to abuse it, the abuse of power is typical of mediocre people and that unfortunately it has predominated in many events and in people who have had the privilege of possessing it along the history. Thank God the ark did not fall into the wrong hands, even, I have always thought that there are things that it is better not to discover, it is better to leave them as they are and that was just what happened in the film, its power was of such magnitude and totally uncontrollable, which in the end was not for either of the two rulers.
There are several reasons why a trilogy is created. Maybe they want to tell the story of the Corleone family (Godfather I, II and III), or an empire's attempt to defeat evil (Star Wars IV, V and VI) or even a particular favorite of mine (a Greek trilogy by Theo Angelopoulos) the effects of history on the individual (Days of '36, The Travelling players and The Hunters).
Still, there are masterpieces, as @notacinephile kindly reminded us, with Kieslowski's trilogy of Colours
Sometimes, however, one film expands in three or more sequels , because of the commercial success of the first one (and about that, there are many trilogy films due to that)
But since the question was about our favorite trilogy, as always I went back to my teenage years.
Imagine the 90s and the cinema is playing a retrospective of the three films with Indiana Jones as the main character. My age of course - I was around 15 at the time - didn't allow me to spend that many hours at the cinema (my new love, see story here), but at least I sat down to watch the first film.
On screen, cuddly but charming archaeology professor Henry Jones becomes the adventurous and savvy Indiana Jones, who finds antiquities, fights bad guys, falls passionately in love and hates two things:
Snakes and Nazis.
I was so impressed with the hero that I spent half my teenage years wanting to be an archaeologist like Indiana. Of course, when I got a little older, I realized that the leather jacket, fedora and whip were not the classic archaeologist's uniform. Oh and also, that during archaeological excavations there were no bad guys chasing you, but on the contrary things were very quiet, almost boring.
(My plans to become an archaeologist changed, but at least I followed the classical studies.)
However, despite my disillusionment with archaeology, I continued to fanatically watch Indiana Jones movies and be passionate about his adventures.
Although the first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), had its charms because of the effect it had on me,
the second, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), made me laugh to tears at Indiana's experience with bugs,
my favorite is the third, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which features Sean Connery (another favorite actor, don't get me started on him) as Indiana Jones' father, a great duo. The two fight with each other, claim the same woman, but together they both fight their great enemy: the Nazis.
And at last we learn all about the nickname Indiana and its origin
Another film was made in the 2000s but I can't say it had the grace of the previous three, though it certainly had better visual effects. But it lacked that innocence, that chutzpah of the first three films.
Bonus: The music of John Williams
PS. I bet you keep humming it right now, don't you?

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is the first film in a quadrilogy, probably among the most famous in the world that sees Henry Indiana Jones, professor and teacher of archeology, lover of adventures at the limit to find archaeological finds of fundamental importance to humanity and to keep them safe from potential treasure hunters.
In the first chapter, the Indian professor is charged by the American Intelligence with finding the Ark of the Covenant, a treasure chest that holds the fragments of the tables of the ten Commandments, and with extraordinary powers. Hitler is desperate for the Ark and has hired Indiana's enemy archaeologist, his name is Belloq, and they are close to his discovery in Egypt.
Thanks to a medallion owned by Marion Ravenwood, daughter of his friend Abner, with whom he had an affair in the past, Indiana moved to Egypt with Marion and here he found the help of his friend Sallah, who helped him enter in the excavations of the Germans and with the help of the medallion they succeed in discovering the exact location of the Ark of the Covenant.
During the extraction of the Indian archaeological treasure and the group of helpers are discovered by the Germans who come into possession of the Lost Ark and take Marion hostage, transporting the precious booty on a German submarine to the Island of Crete. Here Belloq and the German soldiers, having foiled yet another Indiana Jones assault, finally open the Ark and are fatally killed by his power.
The Ark returns to Washington and is answered in a secret intelligence warehouse while Marion and Indiana fall in love again.
Beautiful story of adventure created by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, surely creating one of the most famous characters of the cinema era, Indiana Jones, masterfully played by Harrison Ford. The film is intrinsic to adventure, history, love, friendship, enemies, death and life. In short, it has all the elements that are useful for a great story as it is and it is surprising how 30 years later it is still a reference for the new generations.
The soundtrack was magically written by John Williams and is one of those music that you fall in love with and keep humming without ever getting tired. Beautiful the scenographies scattered in the various Continents always very detailed and cured, with breathtaking panoramas that invite you to take part in the scenes of the film.
I loved Indiana Jones as a child because he always gave me that sense of adventure I was looking for and how many times I played pretending to have a whip attached to my belt and a cowboy hat on my head ... Beautiful!
ITA
Bellissimo!
I'm a child of the eighties so I grew up with these classics. Dr. Jones was definitely one of the coolest guys from my childhood. I always looked for a hat like his and even practiced with a whip, but to no avail. I can still hear his theme music in my head.
The only person strong enough to play Indy's father was James Bond himself. He was a bit mad to play the dad because the actors are only 12 years apart, but it turned out to be Hollywood magic.
These movies are pretty old now, but they're still fresh and exciting today. Not everyone in my location, Southeast Asia, has had the privilege of watching these gems, so it's fun to show them. They work great for Halloween time too. I still think some scenes look better than the CGI we have today. When I was a boy some of the scenes in Indiana Jones were as scary as the Exorcist to me. I've showed these films to my children and hundreds of students and it scared them too.
List of Indy's Films
Each of the films on this list will link to Amazon if you're interested on watching it there or want to learn more. I personally don't feel the latest movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) deserves to be on the list. It wasn't made in the 1980s, so to me, it never counted anyway. Even Indy's face on the cover is disappointed. I ranked each film from ⭐️ to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars. How would you rank these films?
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom (1984)
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (1989)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
⭐️
Thanks for looking back on Indiana Jones with me today. I took almost a hundred screenshots while watching these again on my PC, but used only a few. The covers are from Amazon and will link to the films. I really enjoyed watching these again and writing this review. If I ever wake up from a coma and forget everything, please show me these again minus the 2008 version with Transformers boy. What were your favorite Indiana Jones moments? Can you hear the music in your head too?
Random Good Scenes
I orginal posted this with just a few shots, but I changed my mind. Here on some of the screenshots I took while watching all these movies again in no particular order. I'll just show the images without any text so I don't ruin anything.

My first experience in the cinema was with the film Grease that competes in this contest. I was in love with Danny Zuko and I wanted to be beautiful like Sandy. I had posters in my room, I danced to his songs, I wanted some black Lycra and heels but my mom didn't accept..
I remember my second time in the cinema with an action movie, I went with a friend and my aunt, we were in the first row a little uncomfortable to visualize the screen. The people behind us were fanatics, they told the plot out loud, my aunt called them out, but they continued, despite that annoying detail, we enjoyed the adventures of its protagonist.
Let me introduce you:

This film is a very pleasant memory of my childhood, I have seen it several times, it is a classic that is still in force, the scenes that I liked was the stone rolling behind Indiana, in the market when he pulls the gun and kills the villain, of course, the death of the Nazis.
›Film Structure Analysis #8 - Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)@lionsuit2802d
Cheers to Raiders on so many levels. So clean in story, in shot choice, in character, tone, and dramatic tension.
Spielberg (director), Lawrence Kasdan (script), George Lucas (story), and Philip Kaufman (story) all crush here.
I've written before about the Act 1-2 transition specifically, but today I was thinking about the entire movie.
The breakdown feels pretty in line with the overall story focus -- Indy and Marion as a team in search of the Ark for the safety of the world.
In the most simple sense, to me it looks like this...
Act 1 wraps with an awesome set piece and great action sequence. Indy and Marion unite.
Coming into our dig site, seeing Marion is still alive, and finding the Ark room line us up for our story's midpoint.
And the truck chase sequence wraps Act 2, gives us a glance of the possible ending, and sets us into our final focus in Act 3, market by a climactic opening of the Ark.
So many classic images and moments from film history wrapped beautifully into such a fun adventure.
›RAIDERS TURNS 37! Jesus I’m old… But “it’s not the years, it’s the mileage.”@writesbackwards2950d
37 years ago, my mom took me to a small theatre in Farmington Hills, Michigan to witness what would be yet another solidification of my passion for wanting to make movie. That film was “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” released June 12th, 1981. I was riveted from frame one. Like most folks, who’ve seen it, it was a magical experience. For me, yet another life changer. Heck, my first LONG film I made as a 12 year old kid was an “Indiana Jones” “fan-film” before the term fan film was a thing. I made an Indiana Jones movie with my grandmother’s Super-8 camera called “Indiana Jones and the Curse of Death Island.”
The movie is probably one of those films one would call “perfect.” The pacing is impeccable, the acting-fun and not too over-the-top, the special effects were groundbreaking and fantastical, the story; incredibly compelling and, the action; superb. You forgot Harrison Ford was Han Solo as he BECAME Indy. Karen Allen played the tough, Marion Ravenwood with a resilient sex appeal; a tomboy who could out-drink you at one moment, be tender and caring the next and a moment after that, be the pure femme fatale. Paul Freeman, as Belloq, was a perfect foil for Indy… a charming, sophisticated mirror opposite of our rough and tumble, gruff and dirty adventurer. John Rhys-Davies, as Dr. Jones faithful and trusty side-kick, Sallah not only offered support but, some fun humor. Denholm Elliott as Brody and Ronald Lacey as the evil, Peter Lorre-like Toht round out an incredible cast.
If you haven’t seen it, you’re living in a cave and need to get out more. It’s too great to pass up. It’s Steven Spielberg playing in George Lucas’ sandbox and it’s those two doing some of their finest work. The movie never slows down long enough for a watch glance or a seat shift. The script, written by Lawerence Kasdan (who wrote Empire- the best of the Original Trilogy, Return of the Jedi, The Big Chill) and based on the story by Phillip Kaufman and Lucas, is an magnificent blend of action, adventure, romance, thrills, chills, spills and other words that are awesome and some more that even rhyme. It moves like a well oiled freight train filled with gold, love, wizard magic, unicorns and kittens. Plus we got to see a dude’s head blow up and a nazi’s face melt. Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner!
And the THEME SONG BY JOHN WILLIAMS?! Like the most savory, melted butter on my ear popcorn!
Some fun facts you may not (but probably know):
-During breaks in production, Harrison Ford’s wife at the time, Melissa Matheson, and Spielberg were writing a script together. That script was E.T.
-During filming in Tunisia, nearly everyone got sick from either the food or water there except for Spielberg, who ate the food he brought with him to avoid illness. Many cans of Chef Boyardee’s Spaghetti-O’s.
-Tom Selleck was the first choice for Indy but, he couldn’t get out of his TV contract from the show “Magnum P.I.”
-Many people claim Jeff Bridges was offered the role of Indiana Jones but, that was never the case.
-The line “It’s not the years, it’s the mileage” was completely ad-libbed by Harrison Ford.
-Biggest grossing film of 1981, and rightly so… it’s brilliant.
-The film had such an impact on me, I save my money and bought a very expensive whip and learned how to use it.
-I watch it at least once a month just to remind myself how good films were back in the day.
While the sequels were not as well received (don’t get me started about the LAST one), this film is considered one of the greatest ever made. I’d have to whole-heartedly agree.
›Throwback Thursday: Raiders Of The Lost Ark@darthnihilus2983d
Raiders of the Lost Ark is the beginning of one of the top trilogies of all time and a fantastic movie in it's own right. Starring Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones a professor/archaeologist/badass who hops around the globe recovering ancient treasures and thwarting the Nazis at every opportunity and featuring Paul Freeman, Karren Allen, John Rhys-Davies, and a host of others this movie delivers a fresh and exciting take on adventure serials of the 30's and 40's.
Originally conceived by George Lucas as Indiana Smith, he intended for Raiders and the subsequent films to harken back to the adventure serials of the 1930's and 1940's and for Indiana to be a dashing adventurer with a keen intellect. When he convinced Steven Spielberg to sign on he claimed he had already written 2 sequels for Raiders and that was the only reason Spielberg agreed to take on the trilogy. As it turns out when production began on the second movie Lucas revealed he actually had nothing written. A little side note, I think this little lie also sheds some light on why the Star Wars trilogy had so many weird plot inconsistencies when George " had it all written/planned out" ahead of time. After convincing Lucas to change the name to Indiana Jones and hiring on Lawrence Kasdan to polish their brainstorming sessions into a usable script they spent 6 months refining and after that the film was almost ready to go into production. An interesting side note, Spielberg had to try very hard to get George to use Harrison Ford in the title role. Lucas didn't want Ford to become his " Bobby De Niro" in reference to the long working relationship between De Niro and Scorsese. Tom Selleck was offered the part but had to decline due to filming conflicts with Magnum P.I. and Lucas reluctantly signed Ford. After cutting some of the more extravagant to film ideas like a chase through a mine and a shoot-out using a gong as cover( both of which would make it in to Temple of Doom) the team began shopping the project around to the studios. All the major Hollywood studios declined involvement at first due to the high budget and George's requirement that they agree to take on at least 2 additional films but finally Paramount caved and funded the project.
Costume designer Deborah Nadoolman used Charlton Heston's character Harry Steele(Secret of the Incas) as a basis for Indiana's look and the crew watched the film several times together for inspiration. Spielberg and Lucas made extensive use of storyboards and a tight filming schedule to keep the costs within budget. This resulted in many scenes being filmed in a way the Spielberg describes as "quick and dirty" evoking the production style of the serials they wanted to pay homage to. The opening scenes in "Peru" where actually shot on the Hawaiian island of Kauai which Spielberg would later return to for Jurassic Park. The Egyptian scenes were filmed in Tunisia in some of the same locations from the original Star Wars movie with many of Lucas's team returning to shoot Raiders. One of the most iconic scenes of the film actually stemmed from Harrison Ford ( and a great number of the cast and crew) having dysentery and being unable to film long scenes. Originally the scene between Indiana and the sword wielding thug was supposed to be a duel involving his whip but Ford suggested that due to his condition they just " shoot the sucker" and be done with it.
George's company Industrial Light and Magic was hired to provide the special effects for the movie. Ben Burtt who had also worked on Star Wars supervised the sound design and John Williams produced the score. ILM utilized animation, puppets, cloud tanks and extensive matte paintings to produce the iconic Ark of The Covenant shot and used a gelatin and plaster model of Major Arnold Toht's( gestapo interrogator and general creep) head exposed to a heat lamp to create the face melting power of the ark. Burtt made extensive use of foley(using everyday sounds as effects in a movie) work to capture sounds for the movie including: a .30-30 Winchester rifle for the sound of Indiana's pistol, fingers running through casserole for the snakes slithering, rolling a car down a gravel driveway in neutral for the sound of the boulder, and beating a leather jacket with a baseball bat for punches and hits. Not only was this very effective it also drew yet another parallel with the production techniques of the past used to make the serials that inspired Raiders. He also utilized a synthesizer to mix dolphin and sea lion calls together to achieve the horrible screaming when the ark is opened.
I have really enjoyed the Indiana Jones movies ever since my father introduced them to me many years ago. I think Raiders strikes that perfect balance of wit, humor, and adventure that make a great timeless movie. It is without a doubt one of the two best things George Lucas has ever been a part of and has to be high up on list of Spielberg's accomplishments as well. All of the original Indiana Jones movies are great but nothing really compares to the first time you see Raiders of The Lost Ark. If you haven't seen it watch it immediately and if you have watch it again( you know you want to). Thanks for reading!
›Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - Act 1 Transition@lionsuit3009d
Such a fun film. Such great story structure. A blast to analyze.
Directed by Steven Spielberg, story by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan.
Today I was thinking about one of the movie's great script transitions, our break from Act 1 to Act 2 and the setup of the film's main question.
We meet Indiana and Belloq, we see Indy teaching, meet Marcus, find out the Nazis want the Ark, pack our bags and talk about not believing in magic, get on a plane, get to Marion's, and unite with Marion.
At the end of all of it, we have set up our various bad guys and our hero team, set up the question of belief in magic, and set up the main question of the film regarding if the powerful tool of the Ark can be kept from the Nazis. The question of if Indy believes it is actually a powerful tool is to be dealt with later also.
Regardless, by about 33 minutes into a 115 minute film, roughly 29% through, we wrap up Marion's Bar and have transitioned into act two, ready now for Sallah's, "Danger," and Marion's possible death.
(One could view Marion's Bar as either the end of Act 1 or the start of Act 2. For some reason, I tend to lump these transitions into Act 1 often. Ask the filmmakers if you want concrete answers.)
Another interesting note. Indy and Marion have a bad past, they have conflict there, and this is good for the story, but we have to see them connect in some way, and if it isn't going to be personal or friendship or romance, then it needs to be some sort of survival connection, and this is quickly achieved when they have to fight together to get out of the burning bar alive. Well done. Unite them, but do not resolve the personal issues between them fully.

(Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark)@panza3058d
