SANAM TERI KASAM (2016)
When I watched Sanam Teri Kasam, I realized that this movie wasn’t just a love story It’s also the story of someone who for a long time felt like they weren’t good enough for others and of another person who was also hiding a lot of pain behind their facade When Saru and Inder meet they gradually discover that sometimes the person you think means nothing to you can become the most important person in your life
THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY — SARU AND HER LIFE
The story begins with Saraswati “Saru” Parthasarthy a quiet young woman who works in a library Saru is very shy She loves books and leads a simple life She has a kind heart but her appearance and traditional style mean that many men she’s introduced to for marriage reject her. Her family also puts a lot of pressure on her Her sister Kaveri wants to get married but their father Jayram insists that Kaveri can’t get married until Saru finds someone So Saru tries to find a solution, because she wants her sister to find happiness But the problem is that Saru herself is starting to believe that no one will ever be able to love her just the way she is.
INDER — THE MYSTERIOUS NEIGHBOR
Meanwhile, a man named Inder Lal Parihaar moves into the building where Saru lives. Inder seems like a tough and mysterious man He doesn’t say much and some people around him consider him dangerous and untrustworthy But as I watched the movie I discovered that Inder had another side to him that others didn’t know about As soon as he notices Saru he begins to take a special interest in her But he doesn’t know how to confess his feelings to her So instead of talking to her directly he borrows books from the library where Saru works and leaves little notes inside them But Saru doesn’t understand what these notes mean and ignores them unaware of what lies behind them
SARU WANTS TO CHANGE
Saru is interested in a man she works with, Abhimanyu. She thinks that if she changes her appearance, Abhimanyu might start looking at her differently. So she asks Ruby a woman who once had a relationship with Inder for help. But when Ruby sees Saru and Inder together, she misinterprets the situation An argument breaks out and Saru finds herself in a situation that terrifies her Inder tries to protect her but the neighbors misinterpret what happened When Saru’s father Jayram, arrives and sees the situation he believes something that isn’t true Jayram gets angry and cuts Saru off from her family Saru is heartbroken She feels like the person she needed most—her own father—no longer wants to understand her
INDER BECOMES THE ONLY PERSON WHO STANDS BY SARU
Saru tries to start her life over But she doesn’t really have anywhere to go anymore That’s when Inder decides to help her. He finds her a new apartment where she can live in peace He also helps her change her appearance but most importantly Inder never thinks Saru needs to change to deserve to be loved To him, Saru is already a wonderful person just the way she is The more time they spend together the more special their relationship becomes Saru also helps Inder reflect on his relationship with his father since Inder and his father have a very difficult relationship Inder tells her about the wounds from his past and Saru encourages him to try to reconcile with his father someday
INDER BEGINS TO LOVE SARU DEEPLY
After Saru’s transformation, Abhimanyu starts to look at her differently Saru then feels that someone might finally love her Abhimanyu proposes to her Inder is deeply hurt by this news but he hides his feelings He simply wants Saru to be happy Even though it hurts him Inder encourages her to accept the proposal if Abhimanyu is truly the one she loves. Watching this part of the movie I really felt that Inder loved Saru sincerely because he was willing to put her happiness before his own feelings
WEDDING DAY — ABHIMANYU ABANDONS SARU
Saru is getting ready to marry Abhimanyu. She finally feels that her life is heading in the right direction But on the wedding day Abhimanyu doesn’t show up We eventually learn that his family refuses to let him marry Saru, mainly because Saru’s father himself rejected their relationship Saru feels rejected once again Her heart is completely broken Inder then becomes the only person left by her side He tries to comfort her and help her overcome her pain Saru then begins to realize something important The person who had always been there for her wasn’t Abhimanyu It was Inder
SARU AND INDER — TRUE FEELINGS
Saru and Inder start spending more time together and their relationship grows deeper and deeper Saru gradually realizes that Inder is the one who truly understands her But neither of them has yet clearly expressed their full range of feelings Later Inder sees Saru talking with Abhimanyu and misinterprets the situation He then decides to distance himself from her But he eventually learns that Saru had rejected Abhimanyu. Inder then sets out to find Saru. He finally finds her and confesses his feelings to her directly But at that moment Saru suddenly faints Inder takes her to the hospital And there he receives the hardest news of his life
THE HIDDEN TRUTH — SARU IS SERIOUSLY ILL
The doctors explain to Inder that Saru has a meningioma a brain tumor that is in a very serious condition Inder is completely devastated He suddenly realizes that Saru might not have as much time left as she thought He’s also angry at Saru’s parents because he thinks she needed their love and support But Saru doesn’t want to spend the time she has left being seen as a burden to others
SARU DISCOVERS THE SECRET OF THE BOOKS
After leaving the hospital Saru returns to the library She begins looking through the books Inder used to borrow And that’s when she discovers something she had never understood before Inder had left messages for her in the books Saru reads them one by one She then realizes that Inder had loved her for a long time long before she herself realized her own feelings She understands that Inder never saw her as a second choice To him Saru was his only choice This discovery touches Saru deeply
INDER AND SARU — THE DECISION TO GET MARRIED
When they are reunited Saru asks Inder why he never clearly confessed his love to her Inder explains that he loved her but he was always afraid he wasn’t the man she deserved Saru then realizes that their feelings are real.She asks Inder to marry her She wants to spend the little time she has left with the person she has truly chosen Inder agrees
THE WEDDING AND SARU’S WISH
Saru confides a final wish to Inder. She wants to be buried under a beautiful tree covered in flowers when she is no longer here Inder is deeply saddened by these words as he cannot bear to imagine a life without Saru. But he promises her he’ll honor her wish Meanwhile, Inder must also confront his father. He wants to acquire the land beneath the tree but his relationship with his father remains very strained
THE SECRET BETWEEN INDER AND HIS FATHER
Saru helps Inder understand that he mustn’t keep running from his past She asks him why he was imprisoned Inder finally reveals the truth to her When he was younger a woman named Lily who had taken care of him had been through a very serious ordeal caused by his uncle After that incident Inder took responsibility for what had happened in order to protect Lily As a result, he spent many years in prison and his relationship with his father completely broke down Saru asks him not to keep living with that anger She wants Inder to forgive his father.
SARU AND INDER GET MARRIED
Finally the day Saru and Inder had been waiting for arrives They get married Saru’s parents also come and eventually accept their love Jayram finally realizes that Inder isn’t the man he once imagined him to be He sees how deeply Inder loves his daughter But unfortunately their happiness doesn’t last long Saru suddenly faints and has to go back to the hospital. Her parents then discover just how serious her condition is Jayram feels immense sadness and regret because he realizes that his daughter needed his love at the very moment he pushed her away
THE FINAL MOMENTS
Saru knows her time is almost up Inder stays by her side They talk about their love and everything they’ve been through together Saru asks Inder not to spend his whole life in sadness She wants him to keep living Inder,deeply distraught cannot accept the idea of losing her But Saru makes him understand that their love won’t disappear just because they have to be apart She assures him that she’ll always remain in his heart Finally,Saru dies in Inder’s arms Inder is devastated He realizes that the person he loved most in the world has just passed away.
INDER AND HIS FATHER — RECONCILIATION
After Saru’s death Inder’s father comes to see him. He witnesses his son’s immense grief Inder finally understands Saru’s words. He decides to forgive his father The two men then begin to rebuild their relationship Saru,even though she is no longer here left something very important behind She taught Inder that love doesn’t just mean living with someone Love can also mean forgiving understanding and wanting the happiness of the person you love
THE END — INDER STILL REMEMBERS SARU
The story then returns to the present. Inder has become a successful lawyer But despite his success he has never forgotten Saru. He returns to the tree beneath which she rests He stands there in silence thinking back on the woman who changed his life Even though Saru is no longer physically present Inder still feels that her love is part of his life That’s what I found most beautiful about the film’s ending: it shows that true love can continue to live on in a person’s heart, even when the loved one is no longer by their side
MY THOUGHTS
Personally I think Sanam Teri Kasam is a very sad movie but at the same time it’s beautiful
What I liked most was how the relationship between Saru and Inder doesn’t start out immediately as a grand love story It builds gradually through mutual support, trust understanding and the emotional wounds each of them carries within.
At first Saru thinks no one could ever truly love her But Inder shows her that someone can love her exactly as she is Inder,for his part had closed off his heart because of his past But Saru teaches him to forgive to understand his father,and to believe in love again The ending really moved me
For me,this is one of the saddest and most memorable love stories especially thanks to the story of Saru and Inder
