Save the Last Dance

Interracial romance was for a long time a taboo in Hollywood films. It took some time for such content to leave the ghetto of “edgy” films and enter mainstream, thus becoming part of the plot of teen films like Save the Last Dance, 2001 dance film directed by Thomas Carter.

Protagonist, played by Julia Stiles, is Sara Johnson, 17-year old aspiring ballerina who lives in Chicago suburbs and dreams of being accepted to prestigious Julliard Schools. Her life get shattered when she fails audition and when this coincides with her mother being killed in traffic accident. Sara is now forced to move to her father Roy (played by Terry Johnson), jazz musician who lives in South Side and transfer to predominantly African American school. As one of the few white students she has problems adapting to new circumstances, but soon she finds new friends that would inspire her to start enjoying new dance styles based on hip hop. She also meets Derek Reynolds (played by Sean Patrick Thomas), African American student who dreams of becoming a physician and who also impresses her with his dance skills. Derek and Sara become dance partner and, inevitably, a couple, but their relationship is threatened by Derek’s ex girlfriend Nikki (played by Bianca Lawson) and Derek’s friend Malakai (played by Fredro Starr) who is involved in street crime.

What used to be a nightmare for average US racist has, mainly thanks to MTV and 1990s popular culture, became something “cool” and “hip” enough to make young audience flock to theatres. Despite most of the critics being less than impressed and finding the plot formulaic and unoriginal, Save the Last Dance has very good results at the box office. Script by Duane Adler and Cheryl Edwards occasionally strays from cliches and even finds time to briefly address some of the racial issues in early 21st Century America. Former actor Thomas Carter does more than decent job as director, and the music and dance numbers are well done. The cast is also doing a good job, mainly thanks to some of the characters being multidimensional. Julia Stiles shines in the film, showing not only acting or dancing, but even uses rare opportunity to display her martial arts skills. Despite not being particularly deep or memorable, Save the Last Dance is mostly satisfying viewing experience. In 2006 a direct-to-video sequel Save the Last Dance 2 was released, with Izabella Miko replacing Stiles in main role.

Welcome Hivers to this new post, this week in 7th Art & More we will be discussing "Dancers", this time, I bring you the summary of a movie from 2001: Save the Last Dance, a story of love, dance, friendship and much more. But, I'll keep telling you about it below.

Bienvenidos Hivers a este nuevo post, esta semana en 7mo Arte & Más estaremos discutiendo de “Bailarines”, en esta oportunidad, les traigo el resumen de una película del año 2001: Pasión y Baile, una historia de amor, de baile, amistad y mucho más. Pero, les sigo contando a continuación.

The story follows Sarah, a young woman who recently lost her mother in a car accident, and has to move in with her father, the man who abandoned them years before. She also makes the decision to change high schools, where she causes a furor, because the majority of the student population is of color.

La historia sigue a Sarah, una joven que recientemente perdió a su madre en un accidente de coche, y tiene que irse a vivir con su padre, el hombre que las abandonó años atrás. Además, toma la decisión de cambiarse de instituto, donde causa furor, porque en su mayoría la población estudiantil es de color.

Gradually she befriends Cherry, a young girl her age, who already has a baby at home with her boyfriend and who is the sister of Derek, a quiet young man in high school, who wants to study medicine. Soon the two young people meet and discover that they have a similar passion: dancing. However, although their dance styles are different, they manage to complement each other to motivate each other to get ahead.

Poco a poco se hace amiga de Cherry, una joven de su edad, que ya tiene un bebé en casa junto a su novio y que es hermana de Derek, un joven tranquilo del instituto, que quiere estudiar medicina. Pronto ambos jóvenes se conocen y descubren que tienen una pasión similar: el baile. Sin embargo, aunque sus estilos de baile son diferentes, logran complementarse para motivarse a salir adelante.

Within the film we see how Derek motivates Sarah to pursue her dreams of becoming a professional dancer. Although to do so, she must enter Juliard, the most prestigious dance school, auditioning is only the first step, and she must stand out among the other participants. So she asks Derek for his help to learn to dance Hip Hop, the boy agrees and as they practice, they become more and more comfortable with each other.

Dentro de la película vemos como Derek motiva a Sarah a perseguir sus sueños de ser bailarina profesional. Aunque para hacerlo, debe entrar en Juliard, la escuela más prestigiosa de baile, hacer la audición es solo el primer paso, y debe destacar entre los otros participants. Por lo que le pide a Derek su ayuda para aprender a bailar Hip Hop, el chico accede y a medida que practican, se van sintiendo cada vez más cómodos entre ellos.

When their romance is thwarted by external prejudice, Sarah's dancing is also affected. Causing with this that her opportunity looks a little more distant, although in the end, thanks to the support of her family and Derek, she manages to do her dance without problems, giving a different presentation, which allows her to fulfill her dream.

Cuando su romance se ve frustrado por los prejuicios externos, el baile de Sarah también se ve afectado. Causando con esto que su oportunidad se vea un poco más lejana, aunque al final, gracias al apoyo de su familia y de Derek, logra hacer su baile sin problemas, dando una presentación diferente, que le permite cumplir su sueño.

I think it is an amazing movie not only because of the dancing, but because of all the social issues that can be seen and of which the main characters are victims at some point. Dancing is a motivator and a catalyst, a support and a way to get ahead, it is also that which unites the world of Sarah and Derek, who did not have many things in common.

Creo que es una película increíble no solo por el baile, si no por todas las cuestiones sociales que se pueden ver y de las cuales los protagonistas son víctimas en algún momento. On the other hand, it is through dancing that Sarah proves her worth in front of her classmates, who thought her foolish at some point. She also helps Derek and motivates him to get ahead sometimes, although she finds it hard to understand the world he lives in.
