  1. They Live (1988) and the Warning Hiding in Plain Sight. John Carpenter Turned a B-Movie Concept into One of the Sharpest Social Commentaries.@thefed145d

John Carpenter’s They Live from 1988 is one of those films that feels more relevant every year instead of aging out. On the surface it looks like a scrappy sci-fi action flick starring pro wrestler Roddy Piper, but underneath it is a blunt, angry warning about power, control, and how easily people are manipulated when comfort is dangled in front of them. This movie does not whisper its message. It shouts it, dares you to look away, and then calls you out when you do.

    IMG_6956.jpeg

Roddy Piper plays Nada, a drifter who stumbles into a pair of sunglasses that reveal the truth behind the world we live in. Billboards, magazines, money, and television all transform into simple commands once the glasses are on. Obey. Consume. Conform. The ruling class is literally alien, hiding in plain sight, feeding off humanity while the population sleepwalks through life. It is not subtle, and that is exactly the point.

Carpenter has always been at his best when mixing genre with paranoia, and They Live sits right next to The Thing and Escape From New York as part of his unofficial trilogy about distrust and control. This is Carpenter firing straight at Reagan-era consumerism, corporate greed, and media propaganda. The film suggests censorship does not always come from banning speech. Sometimes it comes from overwhelming people with noise, distractions, and false choices until they stop questioning anything at all.

The supporting cast helps ground the film’s ideas. Keith David is excellent as Frank, a working-class skeptic who represents the average person who does not want to know the truth because knowing means responsibility. Their infamous alley fight scene is legendary not just for its length but for what it represents. Trying to force someone to see reality is painful, ugly, and rarely quick. Carpenter understood that truth is resisted far more often than it is embraced.

    IMG_6957.webp

From a filmmaking standpoint, They Live is lean and effective. The pacing is deliberate, the practical effects hold up, and the black-and-white visuals when the glasses are worn strip the world down to its raw intentions. Carpenter’s synth score hums beneath everything, creating a sense of unease that never fully goes away. It feels cheap in the right way, like underground cinema with something to say.

Censorship is one of the film’s quiet core themes. The aliens do not silence people directly. They program them. The media keeps everyone docile, obedient, and afraid of rocking the boat. That idea feels disturbingly modern, especially in an era where algorithms decide what people see and outrage is monetized. They Live argues that freedom is not taken all at once. It is eroded while people are distracted, entertained, and told everything is fine.

What makes the film powerful is how openly it challenges the audience. Carpenter is not asking if you believe in aliens. He is asking if you believe the world you are shown every day. The movie suggests the dystopian future is not some far-off nightmare. It is built quietly through apathy, convenience, and the refusal to question authority when life feels comfortable enough.

They Live was not a huge hit when it came out, but it has grown into a cult classic for a reason. It is angry, funny, paranoid, and honest in a way most studio films never dare to be. Decades later, the message still lands hard. Wake up. Pay attention. And stop pretending you do not see what is right in front of you.

    ENGLISH CONTENT

Hello all the lovers of the cinema! I am a fan of the bizarre films whose plot, leave you hallucinating and the film I will talk about today, it is definitely out of the ordinary. A while ago, my older brother, who likes paranormal and UFO genre, recommended that he would see the film, since we both share the taste for the strange. Without more preamble, let’s talk about They Live.

    PORTADA.jpg

Everything begins with Jhon Nada, a man who spends his life having sporadic works. Without anything established, Jhon goes to the city of Los Angeles to try his luck. After attending an employment agency and hearing that they do not have work for him, Jhon realices that as always, things will not be as easy. More after meeting a construction, he decides to try his luck and speaks with the manager, managing to get work in it. Without a place to stay, Frank Armitage One of your coworkers talks about a hostel where you can spend the night. Jhon accepts and stays in the place, more being on the site, begins to see certain things that call his attention, especially the church and his preacher, who is blind. Jhon then decides to observe more closely the movements of those in charge of that hostel.

On the other hand, strangely the television signs are constantly interrupted by a kind of hacker, that man does warnings about a recent discovery that the population is being controlled through hypnosis, alerting the viewers and incrimanding them to wake up. After those signs, not knowing why, people end up with headaches. Soon the time of one of the transmissions, strangely helicopteros begin to fly over the area. Faced with the strange behavior of the preacher and his close, Jhon decides to make his own inquiries, entering the church and revealing his secret, but without understanding everything at the time as it is discovered by the blind preacher.

After his discovery, Jhon begins to observe more closely to the church, trying to get more information, Frank seeing him, thinks that his behavior is strange and despite what man tells him about what he saw inside the church, Frank tells him not to think invit Soon, during the night, the police arrive at the hostel and starts to devastate everything in its path. Jhon observes as the place is destroyed and several people are beaten by the officers, arranging them to avoid being trapped. Once everything seems calmed down, Jhon returns to the church completely messy and finding out that many of the things he saw at last time, have disappeared. That’s when the man remembers that last time he found a box behind a false wall, after reviewing he meets the box and decides to take it to check his content. Being in an alley, it opens the box waiting to meet something that helps you clarify your doubts, but you only find it, it is full of sunglasses. Confused, leave the box inside a garbage cube and realizing that one of the glasses has been left out, decides to keep it. While getting out of the alley back to the main street, the glasses are placed without any particular thinking, more instantly, his vision becomes monochromatic. Surfaced, Jhon takes off his glasses, but led by curiosity he replaces them again, realizing that using them, he is able to see things that seem to be hidden in advertisements, signs, television, newspapers and even books, messages like "obey", "stays asleep" and "money is your God", corroborating the fact that everything is being controlled through subliminal messages.

But the most terrifying thing is when Jhon observes some people while using the glasses that seem to be able to counteract the “false reality”. The appearance of these people, is completely different from that of a normal human, understanding that it is about the creatures that have organized everything. Completely alarmed, Jhon decides to do what is within his reach to get rid of those strange beings and look for answers.

It is a movie that at first it does not make it clear that it is about, something that can be uncomfortable, but I think that is also part of its attraction, because when it reaches that point where Jhon gets the sunglasses and manages to see how things are really, your perception about The problem is that, it is something slow, so it is natural that, being accustomed to movies where everything develops a few minutes and with full speed, that things develop in such a slow way, produce some tedio. But it is part of the suspense. In They Live, we see clearly a critique of the current consumer and capitalist society, where only a few have everything, while the others have to settle for what has been living. In my opinion, I think it seems a pretty interesting way to address this type of topics, especially today, where it is difficult to find movies where themes that make you see beyond what is in front of your eyes, being that we are constantly blinded by the extraord I recommend it if you are from this kind of thinking, although I warn you that and the mood of the movie is quite worn ha ha.

    PORTADA.jpg

  4. Film Review: They Live (1988)@drax1473d

    (source: tmdb.org)

One of the greatest ironies of John Carpenter’s filmography is that he became famous due to his early horror films that are hailed as genre-redefining classics, but his best known and arguably the most popular film today belonged to the latter phase of career and was initially ignored or disregarded by critics and fans alike. This happened with his 1988 science fiction film They Live, title which was at first seen as disappointing or subpar according to Carpenter’s high standards, but later became quite relevant and morbidly prophetic due to certain economic, political and cultural trends of 21st Century.

Carpenter wrote the script under pen name “Frank Armitage” and based it on “Eight O’Clock in the Morning”, short science fiction story by Ray Nelson. The plot is set in very near future (1990s) and describes the world almost indistinguishable from Reagan’s America, only with certain economic developments brought to the extreme. That included all but complete obliteration of middle class and even sharper social division between privileged elites and impoverished masses. Nameless protagonist (named as “Nada” in the credits and played by Roddy Piper) belongs to the latter. After losing job in Denver, he hops cargo train and arrives to Los Angeles in search of new start. The best he can find is construction site where he befriends fellow worker Frank (played by Keith David) who points him towards shanty town where he can get food and shower set up by activists led by man named Gilbert (played by Peter Jason). Activists congregate in nearby church which is actually front for some mysterious activities that involve scientific equipment and boxes full of sunglasses. After police demolishes the shanty town, Nada puts sunglasses on and discovers that he can see the world in black-and-white and read various subliminal messages used through billboards, magazines and television – all of which promote conformity, consumerism and adherence to authority. Nada also discovers that sunglasses allows him to recognise ghoul-like aliens passing for humans, apparently using their mind-manipulating technology to control the world. Nada becomes hunted by police and barely survives before he sharing his discovery with Frank. Two of them contact the Gilbert who is actually member of resistance movement that tries to locate and destroy the source of mind-altering signal.

Carpenter’s film was often compared with Invasion of the Body Snatchers, another science fiction classic with the main theme of aliens infiltrating and taking over human civilisation. Both films were products of their times; while Invasion was clearly inspired by 1950s Cold War paranoia and fear of Communist infiltration into American society, They Live took inspiration in 1980s Reagan’s Revolution, a drastic right-wing shift in political sentiments further fuelled by celebration of ultra-materialism and greed. Carpenter was a Boomer and, like many in Hollywood, appalled how many members of his generation had discarded 1960s idealism and embraced Reagan’s conservatism for the sake of material comfort. This shift was so severe that it could, at least in Carpenter’s mind, be explained with something as sinister as alien mind-control technology. What made They Live even more biting in its criticism of 1980s America was its pointing fingers at humans who were (like the character brilliantly played by George Buck Flower) not only aware what was going on, but actually openly and unashamedly collaborating with their alien overlords.

This very dark picture was, on the other hand, used as a nice framework for rather effective action film. Carpenter, as usual, directed film very well, putting relatively meagre resources to good use. There are relatively few special effects, but they look impressive even today. Carpenter is also very good in maintaining proper pace. Film starts relatively slowly, but allows viewers to become immersed in the world which is both familiar and alien. Only in the second half the exposition gives way to action, which is in few scenes a little rough around the edges and somewhat repetitive. Yet, They Live also benefits from very good cast. Legendary professional wrestler Roddy Piper is almost perfect in the main role; although he obviously lacked “proper” acting credentials, this very lack of experience made his performance in the role of an ordinary man quite natural. Piper also benefited from his athletic abilities, making the action scenes look convincing. This is especially so in the famous scene when he tries to make his friend take sunglasses, resulting in very long, but ultraviolet and almost parodic fight scene. Carpenter also benefits from good character actors in supporting roles. That includes Meg Foster in the role of cable television employee who uses her icy image to signal her true alignment, something that protagonist, who is ordinary non-Hollywood person, fails to recognise. Simple, blues-like musical score by Carpenter and Alan Howarth, creates both depressive atmosphere and the way for the audience to enjoy author’s irony and black humour.

They Live was the most explicitly political of all Carpenter’s films and was, not by accident, released at the eve of 1988 Presidential election in which Republicans, much to Carpenter’s horror, won in a landslide. Although Carpenter’s film had more than decent result at the box office, critics were less enthusiastic and considered it one of his lesser works. This might be explained with They Live being very out of touch with domineering sentiments of 1980s America. Things weren’t that different a decade later, when Clinton and Blair continued policies of Reagan and Thatcher in more digestible package. Only in 21st Century, when the world experienced exhausting unpopular wars, financial meltdowns, pandemics followed by brash media and propaganda manipulations designed to maintain such state of affairs, They Live began to be recognised as prophetic. So many people in different countries, with different backgrounds and ideologies, ranging from the likes of David Icke to those like Slavoj Žižek, began to appreciate Carpenter’s film and its images served as the source and inspiration for the most of the popular Internet memes today. Whether this was his real intention or not, Carpenter has all the reasons to be proud of They Live.

  5. [ENG-ESP] THEY LIVE (1988) of JHON CARPENTER FILM - Analisys and Review@fixie1926d

    THEY LIVE IMAGE

Hello friends of Hive since a few days ago I discovered this fabulous community and decided to join to read the great posts about movies. The truth is that I have been impressed and that is why I want to share my first post in the community to become one of you. The film I want to talk about has been released for a few years, however I think it has aged very well, and I am not referring to special effects or filming techniques but to the script and story proposal that is told to us. I want to emphasize that my comment about the film goes in another way than narrating what happens. I will focus on trying to give my opinion about the metaphors used by the live show and understand if they are valid today. Without further ado, let's get started.

    jhon.jpg

The protagonist is called Jhon, an ordinary man who goes from one place to another looking for a job opportunity. We are shown that he is a man who is very cool with people, even when they treat him with obvious contempt. Apparently he has been traveling through every state in the US looking for an opportunity because he believes in AMERICA. Yet every place that goes is followed by a terrible economic crisis that puts the working class out of work. When he arrives in the city, he gets a job in a construction site and there he meets his only friend. There is no doubt that this film is a scathing critique of the capitalism of the 80s where Ronald Reagan and Margareth Thatcher were the most representative leaders. That was a time of the assault of private powers on public services that left many people in misery.

    jhon 2.jpg

They show us a city with two contrasts. On the one hand very tall buildings and constructions raised to the sky, and on the other hand a dirty city, abandoned and without a hint of love for others. There is a constant praise of selfishness, narcissism and consumerism above helping those who need it most. Our protagonist, after being a homeless man on the street, finds refuge in a place full of people like him, where everyone helps each other. It is not long then that the first strange fact and revelation take hold. While they are watching TV. A bearded man appears, with glasses and with signs of being of advanced age, talking about some signals that are being emitted by everyone from a control center for what is presumed to be very powerful people. This elite, says the bearded man, controls world leaders and corrupts people with great power to have their will done, through radio signals they keep the population asleep so that no one knows what they are doing.

    jhon 3.jpg

Certainly the first scene somewhat disturbing. What strikes me beyond the speech is the reaction of those who are watching TV. A headache begins to invade them, a migraine that stuns them and prompts them to try to change the channel but they cannot, all channels are intervened by the intrusive signal. They have no choice but to continue listening to the transmission. This scene reveals to us how difficult it is to receive a truth in one fell swoop, many times in our lives we live episodes where we learn about things for which we were not prepared, and the reaction of our body is weakness and decay. The truth that these sleeping people receive is so strong that it leads them not to want to listen and change the channel, it is how difficult to deprogram ourselves from the system, we are so used to it that we fight to defend the system that oppresses us and we see those who alert us as enemies. And comment aside, have we not seen someone close who does not take his face off his smartphone? watching junk content on social media? More than one will have noticed that more than once, I think that the stupidity and ignorance that exists today was only part of yesterday's fiction.

    jhon 4.jpg

The nation then takes us to Jhon looking towards the church, he realizes that the bearded man who was speaking on TV was speaking from the church. The director could choose many places to be the haven of hackers, but decided to put a church. My opinion about this is because what is being highlighted is that there is a struggle that goes beyond the material, even touching the spiritual. In this sense, the church, regardless of confession, represents a group of believers who are willing to do anything, including martyrdom and sacrifice, so I think that these people are willing to die for what they believe is the truth and they know. who face a power that will not hesitate to crush them.

The following are great as disturbing, for Jhon there are no more secrets, something is strange inside that church, he enters it and manages to see strange things. In the first place, he realizes that there was not a choir singing but a recording that helped the conspirators to mislead people while they sat down to plan. Secondly, he manages to see the bearded man who interrupted the TV signal and the most shocking thing, a sign with the name of the film that for Jhon makes no sense, but that when he sees so many strange things he suspects that he is one of the asleep but now he has to discover who are the ones who live. When he tries to leave the church he stumbles upon the reverend who, being blind, touches John's heart looking for something, and then his hands, recognizing that he does not have what he is looking for, tells him that he is a hardworking man, recognizing that he is an honest and honest man. that is ready to wake up. However, Jhon, not understanding what is happening, prefers to go and see everything from afar, the reverend tells him that he will return. In the distance, and with binoculars, Jhon observes the suspicious activities of all the people involved. His friend Frank rebukes him saying that he is not spying on people, however Jhon continues and manages to see that a police helicopter watches the church but the worst will come later.

    jhon 10.jpg

    jhon 11.jpg

What is coming is brutal, the powerful do not wait and send their squads to destroy the conspirators. They arrive at night, in the same way that the Pharisees went to arrest Jesus, under the shelter of darkness the servants of the powerful deploy their violence and use their weapons to burn the church and persecute the people, they destroy the refuge that it served as a sustenance for the poor. Jhon runs to get to safety from the onslaught and in the flight he sees how the reverend and the bearded man are captured and beaten up, they resist the blows screaming in the faces of the police who know who they are. Jhon, scared, finds a hiding place and watches as they destroy everything without him being able to do anything. Those in power will never allow someone to dispute their dominance, they will do everything in their power to subdue all people and keep them in slavery. Anyone could fulfill the role of the oppressor, it could be a banker, a businessman, a politician or a military dictator. They are all the same, and they destroy everyone who opposes them in their way. I believe that in today's world the repression is more subtle, it is enough to cancel a character, accuse him of sexual perversion, destroy his reputation and finally drive him to suicide. This in today's connected world has more impact on controlled minds than repressing individuals in clandestine jails. Facebook, Twitter and all those corporations already practice the thought police, because they decide what is right and what is wrong.

After miraculously escaping, Jhon returns to the scene, enters the church and sees that it is destroyed and burned. He manages to see that they painted the sign that he had seen previously, he checks inside the church and manages to take a box that was hidden. Jhon checks it and to his surprise he found many sunglasses inside it. He is astonished, he thought of finding something more interesting, however he was struck by the fact that these people were brutally attacked by simple glasses. He takes one of the glasses and hides the rest. When he begins to walk through the city he puts on his glasses and to his surprise everything looks strange. Failing to do so, he observes a computer advertisement with his glasses on but discovers the words "OBEY." He takes off his glasses and the computer ad reappears, he puts on his glasses and the words "OBEY" reappear. Jhon feels that his head hurts like when they saw the TV interrupted by hackers. This fact is important to mention again, the glasses are helping Jhona see the reality that is hidden before her eyes. Not being able to perceive this truth, his head begins to ache. This resource can be seen in the movie Matrix, when Morpheus tells Neo to choose between the blue pill and the red pill. After Neo takes the red pill and begins to understand everything, the first symptom is that his brain is going to explode. Although it may seem strange and somewhat absurd, this metaphor is very old. In the bible we can see how the prophets fell to the ground in dismay when they received a powerful revelation. The inability of our mind controlled and shaped by the instruments of power to break the chains that oppress it cause it pain, is the first price to pay for the state of ignorance. Some may cry, feel their chest open, even vomit, it is clear that our body is reacting to the deception of so many years and the power of the truth.

    jhon 16.jpg

    jhon 18.jpg

Is this worth an explanation? Of course. Here are two readings from my perspective, one of them is the social context when the movie was filmed which I spoke about earlier. I mentioned the political and social influence of the Reagan and Margaret Thatcher administrations with their neoliberalism, that is, the wildest capitalism. Therefore we can see how the hidden messages emphasize what this system wanted you to do. You should marry, reproduce, travel, consume, spend uncontrollably, not question authority, not think for yourself, fall asleep. I think it was a powerful message in its time and it didn't need any explanation. However, more than 30 years later I think it could be interpreted differently. If before materialism, consuming and spending mattered, in a few words owning objects today I think that this has remained in the past. We are changing to a new paradigm and I think it is for the worse. Capitalism defends private property and in order to survive as a system it must massify the production of goods and services. Today, in the year 2021, we are going in a different direction and it is because the elites have been replaced by new elites or worse, they have shown their true face. In today's world, in Western civilization nothing is more attacked than marriage and reproduction. The media today proclaim non-reproduction and abortion. Europe today is a continent where the majority of its population is elderly. And the marriage? that is an oppressive institution, that is the motto of the new intellectual elites. Today that is obsolete, you do not need to own, you only need to rent. You don't need a car, you have Uber, you don't need to buy movies, you have Netflix, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime. You don't need to follow the stars, you can be a star, you have Instagram and Tik Tok. The new generations do not need to have a house, they do not need a family and they do not need to reproduce, their destiny is to consume the products made in China with slave labor, while they live from telework and forever locked in a bubble.

    jhon 25.jpg

The worst is yet to happen. Jhon stops looking at the commercials and observes a man, the disturbing and horrible face changes when observed with the glasses. A hideous face is hidden under a human appearance. Jhon does not come out of his astonishment and no words come out of his mouth, only his eyes speak. Still impressed, he continues walking through the streets and sees the common places full of these beings in the midst of human beings, living as if they were one of them. Only through the lenses can they be recognized. Jhon enters a shop and in it he sees high-class people, they are all these hidden beings, he even watches the TV that is on and through it a politician from the country comes out talking and Jhon can see that it is also one of these sees, the He laughs cynically and says that something like this is always expected from politicians. Jhon is discovered by a woman and sets an alarm using a clock where all these beings communicate. Now Jhon is the one observed, there is no place where these beings do not recognize him and want to catch him. He runs away from the store to get safe. Something that strikes me is that Jhon Carpenter puts the true reality in black and white under the glasses. The illusion appears before us disguised in colors and it is a vile deception, but the truth is in black and white. The truth once found cannot be ignored and it can only be dealt with in black and white, or you follow it or ignore it but if you ignore it you will not be the same all your life, there are no nuances, there is no middle way there is neither right nor left, with the truth there is no lukewarmness.

When Jhon flees he is intercepted by some policemen who also happen to be of these beings. Jhon fights against them and manages to kill them, takes away their weapons and like a rambo walks through the streets. He is determined to finish them off. You have already discovered who are those who LIVE. Now awake, Jhon enters a bank, armed with a rifle and shoots at the frightful beings. He is chased by the police and to flee he kidnaps a girl and makes her take him home. Once there Jhon tries to explain his reasons but she hits him and throws him out the window. Badly wounded he flees and hides in a place to spend the night, he finds himself alone, fleeing and without anyone being able to help him. Jhon is overwhelmed by what he has experienced and decides to go in search of Frank, the friend who had reached out to him. Frank, realizing what Jhon has done, tells him to go away that he doesn't want to talk to him and to leave him alone. But Jhon insists that he needs his help and that he has already discovered everything that is going on. Frank thinks of his wife and children and he only cares about keeping his job, he tells Jhon to get out and not look for him.

Frank as a friend finds Jhon and gives him his pay money. Jhon tries to convince Frank to put his glasses on, he gets angry and tells him to forget and disappear but Jhon insists. So much is the insistence that both have a hand-to-hand fight. Jhon practically forces Frank to put on his glasses by force of blows, the scene lasts almost 5 minutes. The length of the scene always caught my attention. Frank fights not to use the glasses, he hits Jhon with all his might but does not give up. The duration of this scene makes me think of the work it takes to make someone understand that they are in a deception, that they are living an illusion, the system sometimes has people so trapped that sometimes you have to go to extremes to convince them, It is not about fighting with blows, but about insisting that they open their eyes. Through the educational system, and the falsehoods that are shown there, they indoctrinate us to obey unjust laws and never rebel against those who govern us, the indoctrination is so strong that we spend a lifetime living a life of sheep led to the slaughterhouse without questioning anything in absolute. In the end Jhon manages to subdue Frank and puts the glasses on him, Frank cannot believe what his eyes see, and Jhon tells him that he is not the only one who has awakened from this horrible dream, they even manage to see what looks like a drone in it. Darling. And Frank asks what it is, who they are, they both run to safety and discuss what they are going to do now that they know the whole truth about what is happening in the world. They both know that there are more people who are awake and that they must seek them out to join the fight.

Jhon and Frank are contacted by a resistance group but that same night they are attacked by the police. When they are surrounded they manage to flee through a portal that takes them under the city, through some underground corridors they discover two important things. At that moment the signal is interrupted around the world and people can see the horrible beings around them, they can see their hideous faces, all the advertisements disappear and reality is revealed instead.

    jhon 37.jpg

    jhon 38.jpg

In a more intimate scene, Frank and Jhon have a conversation. Jhon tells how his father tried to kill him when he was a child and how he escaped from home. He tells how his father was an ambitious man and how he enjoyed hurting him. Frank when thinking about the story of Jhon tells him that maybe that is why beings are on this planet, because they like to see how we hurt ourselves, they enjoy our cold hearts and feed on our evil. He says maybe that's why they like the planet. At the end of the day I think that we are not different from those beings and that is the great thing about this movie, there is no difference between aliens and us as people because we like to do harm, we like to enslave and take advantage of others as well as they do. they do with other human beings. Many interpret this film literally, but I prefer to go to something more metaphorical and if you want more literary. Tomas Hobbes said that man is man's wolf and that's what this movie is about. It is a critique of selfishness, narcissism and materialism. No matter the time, the problems are the same. Powerful people abusing weak people, and weak people eating each other out of greed and opportunism. In the film you can see how there are humans working for these beings with full knowledge of what they do, and it is because they have offered them wealth and power. Honestly, it is a wonderful movie and every so often that I see it I discover new things in it. I am one of those who prefers to see old movies, I feel that they had more content to offer and not empty and absurd entertainment. I hope you liked this analysis and I invite those who have not seen it and those who have already seen it to let me know your opinion. See you soon friends.

  6. Back to Watching Movies! John Carpenter's They Live ( 1988 )@vincentnijman2583d

Yesterday, I watched a movie for the first time in ages. I honestly don't even remember the last film that I watched. It has been a while...

In fact, if I check my Letterboxd history, I haven't watched a movie in 3 months!

    https://letterboxd.com/vinfilm/films/diary/

I just went to my MUBI 'Viewing History' and discovered I have only watched some fragments of movies since Early March. Am I going crazy? As a guy who studied film ( 2000 to 2007 ) - who is a filmmaker at times - three months without watching an entire movie is pretty exceptional. Those of you who have followed my blog ( and life ) will know the reason though: camping life and the renovation of my house are the main culprits.

Now I think of it, I believe I have seen Disney's 1940 Pinocchio, with my twin sister, nephew and 3 year old niece ( who left the room to play in the garden, after an hour or so ). My sister and I found out that the whole scene where Pinocchio's nose is growing ( when he lies ) wasn't in there. Not sure if it was cut out, or if we confuse it with a couple of pages in a children's book.

We watched the film on watchcartoononline so it wouldn't surprise me if this was a shorter version of the original.

I just double checked and it seems to be the same length as the original. If anyone who reads this can tell me if the nose-growing scene is in the movie, please let me know in the comments. Memories can be deceiving :>)

    Now Back to Yesterday Night...

After about 110 days ( the 10th of February ), I was finally able to spend the night in my house again. A place that now can proudly be called 'home', or house 2.0.

In the night, I felt like watching a movie.

I visited MUBI.com and discovered that there were a couple of hours left to watch John Carpenter's They Live ( 1988 ), a film I had enjoyed in the past.

I remembered very little of this film. I've only seen it once and it must have been 15 years back. I am a fan of the work of John Carpenter though and I remembered this to be a fun flick, almost a comedy, comparable to very enjoyable Big Trouble in Little China.

After a second watching, I discovered that it's somewhat similar in theme to Romero's 1978 Dawn of the Dead, a zombie movie that can be seen as a parody on the consumer industry. The 1988 They Live ( Yes! The 1980s were a fun decade for movies ) isn't about zombies, but it definitely talks about people being brainwashed into consumption, obeying authority, serving the riches and so on and so forth. It's more of a sci-fi film though, as it talks about aliens that have taken over the earth and who make us serve them, with the majority of people being blind to this 'truth'.

Anyhow, I didn't want this to be a review, I was merely excited that I'm back to watching movies ( I might watch another film tonight ) and I felt like sharing this with you.

P.S. John Carpenter might be one of a handful of directors of whom I like quite a lot of movies, here's my favorites, in chronological order:

Halloween ( 1978) The Fog ( 1980) Escape From New York ( 1981 ) The Thing ( 1982 ) Starman ( 1984 ) - Should rewatch that! Haven't seen it in ages. Big Trouble in Little China ( 1986 ) - see the above comment. Prince of Darkness ( 1987 ) Recently gave this a second watch. It's quite dark for a Carpenter flick. In the Mouth of Madness ( 1994 ) Would really love to see this one again...

What about you? Do you like the work of John Carpenter? If so, what are your favorites and do you have a story to share about them?

Here's a trailer of They Live:

    Source

Also, if you're interested in an ( arthouse ) streaming alternative to Netflix with an alternating selection of only 30 movies, you might want to check out MUBI. Right now, there's two movies by the notorious David Lynch ( one of my main examples and inspirations as a filmmaker ), namely his feature length debut Eraserhead (1977) and the neo noir, nightmaresque thriller Lost Highway (1997).
