MOVIE REVIEW: FRACTURED (2019)
This is my review about the movie FRACTURED

To be very honest with you I did not want to see this movie at first.

Whenever there is a little child involved, I am reluctant to watch it, as I fear that it may be too sentimental for me.

I am too fragile in my real life and cry too easily, so I try to avoid feeling this way during a movie. that is supposed to be entertaining.

But my partner insisted so we watched it.

Fractured characterizes itself as a psychological thriller, drama, mystery and thriller.

And I will not disagree with that.

The movie is evolving with a couple who stop at a gas station and there, their 6 y.o. daughter's arm is fractured. As they hurry to a hospital, we learn more about the protagonist, his history and his character. The main part of the movie takes place in the hospital, where something strange is going on. The real story and mystery starts when the wife and daughter go missing, so a big part of the movie is with Ray Monroe (the protagonist) searching for them in agony.

The score of the movie in imdb is 6.5, but I would rate it between 5,5 to 6.

I had to run a few parts that seemed a bit slow and tiresome for me, and I was able to (almost) guess what was going on.

I cannot say that this movie left a great after taste, so I would only recommend it if you have nothing else to see and if you are a thriller fanatic (which means that you need to have your own opinion about it :))

Rewatching 'Start-Up' (2020) AI and Underrated Techpreneurial Lessons

Last year, I was reviewing Start-up, a South Korean fictional silicon valley inspired K-drama. It was the kind of drama that blends comedy, futuristic tech as well as ambition. It wasn’t the kind of drama that you would watch for its cinematography nor the artistic value that a cinephile would appreciate. But lately, I find myself re-watching this K-drama. I have rewatched it 10x and it is still surprising to me that at the time 2020, the drama already featured AI and its application to autonomous driving as well as products that helped impaired people to identify things. It's one of the main reason why this deserves a rewatch because nowadays AI is becoming prevalent and the drama also touched on the topic where human will be replaced by AI and how regular people view on it.

When I watched it last year, I honestly took the drama at face value. There were some moments that were too boring to follow, especially when it comes to the conflict of the main character, Seo-Dal Mi with Han Ji-pyeong. However, as I rewatched it again, I learned a lot more lessons for running a Startup as well as the idea of chasing one’s dream.

You see, Seo-Dal Mi was the fictional character with the trope zero to hero. She was the underdog with little connection and even simply a high school graduate. She wanted to become a successful business woman as she drew experience from her father, a man who wanted to create “yelp”-like apps who later died due to a brain injury following an accident. There’s another character that contrasts Seo-Dal Mi, Nam Do-San, a mathematical prodigy who suffers from depression and impostor syndrome.

Nam Do-san is one of those characters that has the failed genius trope. He was the kind of guy who wanted to change the world with his way but lacked social and marketing skills. While he has good ideas, he was mostly more fitting to be a CTO than a CEO. While at first, he was the CEO, after meeting Seo-Dal Mi, CTO was more a fitting role for him. He eventually recovered from his impostor syndrome and regrets of his past. Do san character is going to teach you that sometimes when you're a kid and was put in a pedestal, it can be a burden rather than a blessing. From Seo-Dal mi he also eventually learned to redefine his meaning of success and his path to happiness.

I rewatched this South Korean drama because it offers some valuable insight. This drama also came when South Korea was at its peak of technological innovations. Somehow these days, all the dramas that I’ve seen are mostly talking about the end of the world, some biological warfare type of things and back to the era of flexing riches than drama that can be quite inspiring like this one.

Rather than watching the drama where I skipped the boring part, these days I watch this Startup slowly as I want to get to know more of the characters and their motivation. There are terms that I probably missed about a year ago because I was skipping some parts while watching it.

At the same time, in China there’s one Chinese drama that I keep rewatching titled 亲爱的，热爱的 or known as Go Go Squid!. The drama, while laced with romance, talks about CTF (capture the flag) competition aimed for cybersecurity enthusiasts. While the drama doesn't really talk much about the CTF itself, it was the main character that was quite inspiring and they made it seem like being a pro CTF player was a big deal. Talking about being inspired, I definitely do.

Do you have any tech-inspired movie/k-drama that you watched? While I tend to stay away from heavy science-fiction drama and series, I enjoy tech based drama and series like Silicon Valley, Hacker, MR Robot, you get the gist.

I don’t know why South Koreans don’t make dramas like Startup, Memories of the Alhambra, Rugal or even I am not a robot anymore. Maybe just maybe just like the news said that they’ve peaked just as discussed in this article The Future of K-Power: What South Korea Must Do After Peaking.

The Penguin: "Cent'Anni" - Episode Review [ES - EN]

El pasado domingo se estrenó el cuarto episodio de la sorprendente miniserie basada en uno de los villanos de Batman, me refiero a El Pingüino; este episodio cierra la encrucijada de esta historia en la cual con los otros tres episodios anteriores formaron una fuerte base para lo que será los últimos cuatro restantes y lo que pondrán fin a esta producción de HBO y MAX; personalmente no tenía pensado hacer más reseñas sobre este spin-off hasta el momento de su conclusión, pero este cuarto episodio me ha sorprendido al ser una trágica historia de una princesa que a causa de una traición cayó un mundo de terror que le arrebató todo.

Last Sunday was released the fourth episode of the amazing miniseries based on one of Batman's villains, I mean The Penguin; this episode closes the crossroads of this story in which with the other three previous episodes formed a strong basis for what will be the last four remaining and what will end this production of HBO and MAX; I personally did not plan to do more reviews on this spin-off until the time of its conclusion, but this fourth episode has surprised me by being a tragic story of a princess that because of a betrayal fell a world of terror that took everything away from her.

"Cent'Anni"… Este brindis tiene como significado "100 Años de Buenos Deseos" y es lo da nombre a este gran cuarto episodio que se enfoca en el personaje de "Sofia Falcone"; en esta oportunidad desde el momento en que es traicionada por "Oz", retomamos a lo sucedido hace 10 años cuando Sofia fue acusada de ser la asesina conocida como "the Hangman", lo cual la llevo al "Arkham Asylum" al ser diagnosticada con una deficiencia mental hasta el momento de realizar un juicio que nunca se llevó a cabo; 10 años padeció Sofia en ese nefasto lugar lo cual la convirtió en una mujer que no dejará que nadie más le haga daño.

"Cent'Anni".... This toast means "100 Years of Good Wishes" and it is what gives the name to this great fourth episode that focuses on the character of "Sofia Falcone"; in this opportunity from the moment she is betrayed by "Oz", we go back to what happened 10 years ago when Sofia was accused of being the murderer known as "the Hangman", which took her to the "Arkham Asylum" when she was diagnosed with a mental deficiency until the time of a trial that was never carried out; 10 years Sofia suffered in that nefarious place which turned her into a woman who will not let anyone else hurt her.

Así como sucedió en el tercer episodio enfocado en el pasado de "Victor", me gustó que en esta oportunidad debemos tener la obligada historia de este importante personaje para esta historia, lo cual no quiere decir que se deje a un lado el protagonismo de "Oz" Cobb, sino que veamos el poder y la influencia de ese personaje en la trama de otros como en este caso con Sofia. El episodio que dictaminó el fin de la primera parte de este episodio en mi opinión está creado desde la narrativa de una fábula, veremos como una princesa se le arrebata toda su vida de lujos y protección lo cual la llevo a convertirse en algo que nunca debió ser, creando un ser lleno de resentimiento contra quienes le hicieron daño, pero que todavía faltaba un motivo más para hacerlos pagar y una nueva traición fue suficiente para recordar una vida no tan pasada y llenarse de fuerza para hacer justicia.

Los recuerdos de la estadía en el Asilo de Arkham fue lo primero que me gustó del episodio; el terror y miedo que expresó Cristin Milioti en su actuación fue excelente y demuestra los elementos de terror en este cuarto episodio, lo indefensa, vulnerable de Sofia, son características necesarias para convertirla en una predilecta víctima, la cual va evolucionando en algo más, en alguien diferente y eso se nota en su mirada, su voz, su actitud, pero de igual manera sigue siendo una víctima y eso la aleja de su final transformación y en eso está la importancia de Oz que con su poca presencia en este episodio, se convierte en el ingrediente más importante para la decisión que debe tomar Sofia.

Just as it happened in the third episode focused on the past of "Victor", I liked that this time we must have the obligatory history of this important character for this story, which does not mean that the protagonism of "Oz" Cobb is left aside, but we see the power and influence of that character in the plot of others as in this case with Sofia. The episode that dictated the end of the first part of this episode in my opinion is created from the narrative of a fable, we will see how a princess is snatched all her life of luxury and protection which led her to become something she should never have been, creating a being full of resentment against those who hurt her, but that still lacked one more reason to make them pay and a new betrayal was enough to remember a life not so past and be filled with strength to do justice.

The flashbacks to the stay at Arkham Asylum was the first thing I liked about the episode; the terror and fear expressed by Cristin Milioti in her performance was excellent and demonstrates the elements of terror in this fourth episode, how helpless, vulnerable Sofia is, are necessary characteristics to turn her into a favorite victim, which is evolving into something else, in someone different and it shows in her look, her voice, her attitude, but still remains a victim and that keeps her away from her final transformation and that is the importance of Oz that with his little presence in this episode, becomes the most important ingredient for the decision that Sofia must take.

Si esta historia de más de 60 minutos no estuviera dentro de una producción basada en un comic, creo que hubiera funcionado de igual manera por como fue relatada; posiblemente con anexos como por ejemplo hacer una historia independiente desde un inicio, definiendo o mostrando brevemente el pasado del personaje principal, en este caso Sofia, para después dar paso a los insultos, desprecios y traiciones lo cual afecta nuevamente a una mujer que estuvo recluida en un sanatorio y que está reacia a ser alejada del lugar que a ella le pertenece y por eso debe hacer lo necesario para evitarlo; en mi opinión eso convierte a este personaje en una perfecta Final Girl, alguien que consigue la fuerza en traumas pasados para obtener el valor y enfrentar a los verdaderos monstruos, eso me convence de que este episodio en particular ha funcionado mejor que los anteriores por tener esa necesidad de encontrar a un héroe o a alguien a quien apoyar, pero quiero recordarles que, a pesar de mi admiración por la historia relatada de este personaje en ese episodio, en esta miniserie no hay héroes, eso no existe, ni existirá, todos son víctimas y villanos, todos deben pasar por esas etapas y lo cual para mí es fascinante y que a su vez me crea expectativas para los cuatro episodios finales.

If this story of more than 60 minutes was not within a production based on a comic book, I think it would have worked just as well for how it was told; possibly with annexes such as making an independent story from the beginning, defining or briefly showing the past of the main character, in this case Sofia, and then give way to insults, scorn and betrayals which again affects a woman who was confined in a sanatorium and is reluctant to be removed from the place that belongs to her and therefore must do what is necessary to avoid it; in my opinion that makes this character a perfect Final Girl, someone who draws strength from past traumas to get the courage to face the real monsters, that convinces me that this particular episode has worked better than the previous ones for having that need to find a hero or someone to support, but I want to remind you that, despite my admiration for the story told of this character in that episode, in this miniseries there are no heroes, that does not exist, nor will exist, they are all victims and villains, everyone must go through those stages and that for me is fascinating and that in turn creates expectations for the final four episodes.

They look tender and innocent, also with after-effects of traumas that don't let them sleep well anymore. Watching this documentary made me sad and made me cry. When I started watching it, I didn't know that it was about the same war zone and real images.

Not only Ukrainian soldiers are children, but also Russian soldiers. Some begged for mercy and their lives were spared, they surrendered and became prisoners of the Ukrainians. Without understanding their languages, they were able to save themselves just by asking for peace; I imagine that on the other side it also happens.

Among the interviewees there is a woman, who is the doctor of the soldiers, when I saw her I felt some relief for my gender and I thank her for the representation, it already seemed strange to me that there was no woman, well this young woman who is in charge of giving them first aid and I do not doubt that even saving their lives, her real profession is veterinarian! 😱😆 It's not that she wanted to take on such a responsibility, but it was what she got, and she thought that if she helps the animals the men deserve it too.

It is a good documentary, it is not loaded with psychological stress, nor drama in excess, everything is balanced in its measure, there are even moments of humour and distraction.

After a while, I am here to share another review, this time for a drama.

News of the World - starring Tom Hanks

This 2020 movie was nominated for 4 Oscars and has 80 nominations. A beautifully created movie with realistic direction, great costumes and photography and a good, touching scenario.

It takes place during the civil war and Tom Hanks is a veteran who agrees to deliver a girl taken by the Kiowa people years ago to her aunt and uncle against her will.

The girl, raised by the Kiowa (now dead) had lost all her family in the past and does not have other relatives.

Together, they travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either can call home.

The move genre is action, adventure, western, drama.

Since its good reception at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the award for best screenplay, my expectations were high for this production. Filmmaker Coralie Fargeat had already hooked me with her first feature film, the Rape and Revenge story Revenge, where she showed signs of her style and influences. Revenge was a great debut and with The Substance she is already one of my favourite filmmakers.

The Substance has everything I like. I really enjoyed watching the film. I love the gore, lots of blood. I love the bizarre and disgusting scenes. Also the touch of eroticism, which it has plenty of. It's a visual delight. The film is a set of b-movies and well-made exploitation films. Bizarre and grotesque cinema was what I sought out in the past in video stores and The Substance will delight all fans of such productions.

I am very surprised that the film has been so well received by audiences. The fact that it was screened at Cannes and received such good reviews gives me some faith that the judgement of the masses can sometimes turn the tide. That this project has gone ahead in this day and age is incredible.

Desde su buena acogida en el Festival de Cannes, donde ganó el premio al mejor guión, mis expectativas eran altas para esta producción. La cineasta Coralie Fargeat ya me había enganchado con su primer largometraje, la historia de Rape y Revenge titulada Revenge, donde daba muestras de su estilo e influencias. Revenge fue un gran debut y con The Substance ya es una de mis cineastas favoritas.

La Sustancia tiene todo lo que me gusta. Disfruté mucho viendo la película. Me encanta el gore, mucha sangre. Me encantan las escenas bizarras y asquerosas. También el toque de erotismo, que le sobra. Es una delicia visual. La película es un conjunto de películas de serie b y de explotación bien fabricada. Cine extraño y grotesco era lo que buscaba en el pasado en los videoclubs y The Substance hará delirar a todos los aficionados a este tipo de producciones.

Estoy muy sorprendido de que la película haya sido tan bien recibida por el público. The whole fantastic story and even the most absurd situations in the story, make it for me an orgiastic work.

For all of the above, many will find references to Aronofsky, Kubrick, Cronenberg. I saw many tweets on twitter making those comparisons. It's also a sort of 21st century Portrait of Dorina Grey. There is no doubt that the filmmaker drew inspiration for her writing and staging from different works and filmmakers. What matters is that she also gives it her personal style, creating an exceptional and daring product.

Here the use of female empowerment is very valid, as in the director's first film. It is here that I applaud the fact that the message has a lot of feminism in it, but at the same time the protagonist is not just a victim. Because the characters of Elisabeth and Sue are at heart rather selfish beings, who only seem to care about being praised by the audience, loved, applauded, admired. It shows that they are prisoners of their own ego. That the environment is also hostile and sexist is just an added bonus. It is very clear to me, especially in the final part, how the protagonist is a woman sick of her vanity.

¡Hola amigos! En el día de hoy les traigo la reseña de una serie de esas que considero mi confort porque es tan tierna, dulce y trata temas importantes como lo es Heartstopper y aquí les compartiré mi opinión sobre esta tercera temporada que se estrenó hace muy poco.

Siempre es una alegría encontrarme con una nueva temporada de esta serie que amo y no me importa que sea sobre adolescentes, me hace sentir tan bien, transmite una vibra hermosa y toca temas muy importantes como para no verla por esa trivialidad de que quizás ya no me sienta identificada con estos personajes porque no soy una adolescente.

It's always a joy to come across a new season of this series that I love and I don't care that it's about teenagers, it makes me feel so good, it transmits a beautiful vibe and touches on issues too important to not watch it because of that triviality that maybe I don't identify with these characters anymore because I'm not a teenager.

Como nos tiene acostumbrados, esta temporada trae 8 capítulos en donde los primeros 4 experimente una mezcla de sentimientos porque me gustó lo que vi pero también me rompía ver lo que estaban atravesando los protagonistas, sobre todo Nick, ustedes saben lo que yo amo a este golden retriever convertido en persona, así que me ponía muy triste toda esta situación con Charlie. Si bien, el del problema más grande era Charlie por estar pasando por este trastorno de la alimentación que se empezó a desarrollar en la temporada anterior y acá detonó. Me pareció hermoso que Nick estuviera ahí para él, apoyándolo y ayudándolo a qué se abriera ante sus padres para contarle la verdad y pedir la ayuda psicológica que tanto necesita.

As we are used to, this season brings 8 chapters in which the first 4 I experienced a mixture of feelings because I liked what I saw but I was also upset to see what the main characters were going through, especially Nick, you know how much I love this golden retriever turned into a person, so I was very sad about the whole situation with Charlie. Although, the one with the biggest problem was Charlie because he was going through this eating disorder that started to develop in the previous season and here it detonated. I thought it was beautiful that Nick was there for him, supporting him and helping him open up to his parents to tell them the truth and ask for the psychological help he needs so much.

También me gustó mucho que mostrarán más de Tori, la hermana mayor de Charlie. Ella es un personaje bastante particular con su personalidad muy marcada, me recuerda un poco a Merlina Adams pero de la vieja escuela, no de la nueva. Quedó demostrado lo mucho que ama a su hermano y aunque se haga la dura y que no tiene sentimientos pudimos ver que sí los tiene y que también guarda su cuota de sufrimiento y soledad. Es un personaje que me gusta mucho porque es bastante gris y en esta serie en donde todos parecen unos cachorritos abrazables está bueno ver algo diferente.

I also really liked that they showed more of Tori, Charlie's older sister. She is a very particular character with a very marked personality, she reminds me a little bit of Merlina Adams but old school, not new school. It was shown how much she loves her brother and although she pretends to be tough and that she has no feelings, we could see that she does have them and that she also has her share of suffering and loneliness. She is a character that I like a lot because she is quite gray and in this series where everyone seems like a huggable puppy it's good to see something different.

"It's What's Inside" directed and written by Greg Jardin tells the story of six friends who, years after graduating from college, decide to get together to reminisce about their days of partying and friendship just before the wedding of one of them, but during the course of the evening, a missing member of the group unexpectedly shows up with a briefcase containing an artifact that will start a game that will change them all.

Primero que nada hay que decir que este film es más de ciencia ficción y comedia que de terror, aunque si es cierto que ciertas escenas o sucesos pueden tener esa inclinación al terror, pero creo que Jardin, como director y guionista, tomó la decisión adecuada al mantener la tensión y darle relevancia a la comedia y tragedia de estos amigos; existe un segundo aspecto y lo cual estoy de acuerdo con muchas opiniones leídas en redes sociales y es que es preferible no relevar nada que pueda arruinar la historia del este film en dónde existe un aspecto importante y es que funciona bien al momento de verla sin ninguna expectativa y sin haber visto el trailer, esto es relevante porque con poco o nulo conocimiento de la historia, creo que se puede disfrutar aún más.

Los anteriores trabajos de Jardin en la dirección se remontan a videos musicales y episodios de series de TV; eso significa que este es su primera vez dirigiendo en un largometraje y es un buen trabajo; este es producción pequeña y eso lo digo porque se nota el poco presupuesto, pero eso no evita que muchas de las escenas se note el buen trabajo de dirección y edición que también lo realizó él mismo. Se nota cierta influencia en los trabajos de Edgar Wright y hasta no solo en la dirección, sino en el relato de la historia, en especial en el humor y en cómo están escritos los personajes, justamente es uno de los puntos positivos en esta película.

The previous works of Jardin in directing go back to music videos and TV series episodes; that means that this is his first time directing in a feature film and it is a good job; this is a small production and I say that because the low budget is noticeable, but that does not prevent many of the scenes to notice the good work of directing and editing that he also did himself. You can notice a certain influence in the work of Edgar Wright**_ and even not only in the direction, but in the telling of the story, especially in the humor and how the characters are written, which is precisely one of the positive points in this film.

Las actuaciones son buenas, aunque cuando hay tantos protagonistas es extraño que todos sean relevantes, pero creo que se hace el trabajo necesario para que cada personaje tenga su momento de brillar, pero repito, las actuaciones son buenas, convincentes y eso hace que el relato de la historia funcione en la mayoría de los personajes, digo en la mayoría porque hay algunos comienzan bien, pero terminan regular; puedo decir que son víctimas del guion, pero de igual manera se pudo hacer mejores escenas manteniendo la química en otras escenas del film.

Posiblemente, esta película no debería entrar en el Hivelloween de este año, pero creo que el terror está presente así sea en una pequeña participación, pero necesaria para dar más relevancia a este historia de amigos que con motivos diferentes podrán crean una noche nada placentera para ninguno y que eso creara fisuras no solo en sus amistades, sino en sus vidas; justamente esto me pareció correcto porque no solo es una demostración de terror, sino también de cierta realidad en el comportamiento de algunas personas y lo cual le da más relevancia tanto a la ciencia ficción como a la comedia; ahora creo que con lo antes dicho, en mi opinión, el film "Bodies, Bodies, Bodies" (2022) se hace un mejor trabajo que lo visto en It's What's Inside, pero eso no significa que en esta película se haga un mal trabajo, es todo lo contrario, ya que en su poca originalidad o en su mucha influencia a otras producciones, creo que se hace un trabajo correcto en varios ámbitos en los cuales hacen que este film sea entretenido.

The children also played a good role, especially the boy, trying to warn them what they were getting into. It must not have been easy for him to live with those people... The story starts off a bit slow, yes, but you still get an idea of what it's about, it keeps you in suspense, of how it will all end, you get an idea, but only at the end will you see that it wasn't what you imagined.

The film lasts almost two hours, and shows you scenes set in that European, British landscape, a beautiful meadow, and it certainly has great scenery.

It's worth seeing, just to see Mackoy play these kinds of roles, all psychopathic, brutal, with that look that intimidates and envelops you.

If you haven't seen it, I encourage you to see it, you won't regret it. As I said, it starts off a bit slow, only at the end is everything revealed, we'll see these disturbing and exciting scenes.

Cómo saber si una persona es buena, si lo estás conociendo apenas, no puedes confiar del todo, hasta conocerlo realmente, aunque dicen que uno no termina de conocer a alguien del todo, bien es cierto esto, pero de igual forma sabes si puedes confiar o no en ella.

Creo que está película nos muestra esto y un poco más, cuando se trata de lidiar con perfectos desconocidos, no puedes simplemente confiar a ciegas, exponerte y exponer a tu familia, llevándolos a convivir con ellos, es una cosa de lógica natural, no creen.

No hables con extraños, es el nombre de esta película, protagonizada por el famoso actor James Mackoy, sin duda él se lleva el mérito en esta historia, y estos papeles le sientan muy bien.

La trama nos muestra a dos familias, una británica y otra americana, que coinciden en un viaje vacacional, entablan un par de conversaciones; todo se ve bien, es natural que al salir de vacaciones, conozcas a otras personas, compartan un poco; en fin, al volver a casa, la familia británica invita a la otra a su pequeña granja, y lo que parece una idea maravillosa, termina convirtiéndose en su peor pesadilla.

Hablemos de los personajes..empezando por su principal protagonista, James Mackoy, como les mencioné, este hombre es excepcional cuando se trata de personificar este tipo de personajes, tenemos a Paddy, un hombre que se ve perfectamente normal, esposo y padre de familia, sin embargo, como dice el dicho, no todo lo que brilla es oro, y este hombre aparentemente normal, resulta ser todo lo contrario.

Los niños también hicieron un buen papel, sobre todo el chico, tratando de advertirles, en qué se estaban metiendo, no debió ser nada fácil para él, convivir con esas personas...no quiero darles muchos detalles, por si no lo han visto, sólo para que tengan una idea, hay que tener mucha ira acumulada, mucha impotencia, rabia, para perder el control.

La historia comienza algo lenta, eso sí, pero de igual forma te vas haciendo una idea de que se trata, te mantiene con la intriga, de cómo acabará todo, te haces una idea, pero sólo al final verás que no era lo que te imaginaste.

La película tiene una duración de casi dos horas, te muestras escenarios ambientados en ese paisaje europeo, británico, una hermosa pradera, sin duda cuenta con una gran escenografía.

Vale la pena verla, sólo por mirar a Mackoy realizar este tipo de papeles, todo psicópata, brutal, con esa mirada que intimida y te envuelve.

Si no la han visto, los animó a verla, no se van arrepentir, cómo dije, comienza algo lenta, sólo al final es que se destapa todo, y veremos estás escenas perturbadoras y emocionantes.

Tengo entendido que es el remake de otra película que se estreno hace dos años, esa no la he visto así que no puedo opinar cuál fue la mejor, si ustedes la vieron, dígame cual es su opinión, los leo.

Hola, querido hiver.

A no ser que vivas en una cueva ya conoces el final de esta historia, como el del Titanic. La historia de la empresa que comercializó las Blackberry es la del ascenso y caída de un caso digno de estudio en las escuelas empresariales.

El comienzo de la película nos recuerda a la imagen que viene a la mente sobre los inicios de Facebook: un grupo de chicos jóvenes algo nerds, ingenieros, inconscientes y que sueñan en cambiar el mundo con su trabajo al tiempo que se divierten jugando a videojuegos. Al frente de ellos están Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) y su fiel amigo Dough Fregin (Matt Johnson), quienes tratan de vender sus revolucionarios productos con escaso éxito.

Pronto se topan con Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton), el típico tiburón de los negocios que no tiene escrúpulos y es capaz de hacer lo que sea para ganar y triunfar. Juntos logran en poco más de una década convertir su dispositivo móvil en un símbolo mundial de status que incluso cambió la forma de facturación de las compañías telefónicas. El modelo pasó de consumo de tiempo tarifado por minutos al consumo de datos tal y como es hoy.

La película está muy bien ambientada. Me reí con detalles que aparecen en ella porque los viví en primera persona, como cualquiera nacido antes del año 2000: tener que colgar el teléfono para acceder a internet y viceversa, los sustos que daba el infernal ruido de la línea ocupada transmitiendo los datos, o los pesados y duros (casi indestructibles) teléfonos móviles que solo servían para llamadas, mensajes SMS que costaban un riñón y si tenían algún juego sencillo eran un lujo.

La acción nos lleva por la evolución de la empresa a lo largo de los años, cómo consiguieron convencer a los distribuidores de telecomunicaciones y también a los trabajadores de otras empresas tecnológicas, llegando a establecer contratos que contenían cláusulas ilegales, hasta que murieron de éxito.

Por un lado, la irrupción del iPhone cambio el paradigma del momento. El teclado desaparecía y pasaba a ser virtual. La pantalla ahora ocupaba toda la superficie del aparato. Se creó una tienda de aplicaciones que cambiaban las funciones del teléfono a gusto del consumidor. El CEO de Blackberry despreció a la competencia, fue incapaz de cambiar su producto convencido de que ellos sabían lo que la gente quería... y se equivocó.

Por otra parte, cuando un negocio crece tan rápido es fácil que levante sospechas en los departamentos fiscales. El ejecutivo sagaz no supo atar bien los cabos y eso llevó la empresa a la ruina. Dejo para tu investigación personal o para cuando veas la película el resultado del juicio.

Por ponerle una nota negativa diría que la caracterización del protagonista principal, Mike Lazaridis, resultaba forzada. Se nota a distancia que su peinado es una peluca y no le pega para nada. He buscado fotografías de la persona real y no tiene esa apariencia. Pero la verdad es que el resto del film me mantuvo con la atención de principio a fin e incluso diría que se me hizo corta.

En pocas palabras, la película es entretenida sin más pretensiones que narrar una historia real. Y lo consigue.

Unless you live in a cave, you know the end of this story, like the Titanic. The story of the company that brought Blackberry to market is the story of the rise and fall of a case worthy of study in business schools.

The beginning of the film reminds us of the image that comes to mind of the beginnings of Facebook: a group of young, somewhat nerdy, oblivious engineers who dream of changing the world with their work while having fun playing video games. They are led by Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) and his trusty friend Dough Fregin (Matt Johnson), who try to sell their revolutionary products with little success.

They soon run into Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton), a typical business shark who has no scruples and will do anything to win and succeed. Together they manage in little more than a decade to turn their mobile device into a global status symbol that even changed the way phone companies bill. The model went from time consumption charged by the minute to data consumption as it is today.

The film is very well set. I laughed at the details that appear in it because I experienced them first hand, like anyone born before the year 2000: having to hang up the phone to access the internet and vice versa, the scares caused by the infernal noise of the busy line transmitting data, or the heavy and hard (almost indestructible) mobile phones that were only good for calls, SMS messages that cost a kidney and if they had a simple game they were a luxury.

The action takes us through the evolution of the company over the years, how they managed to convince telecommunications distributors and also the workers of other technology companies, even establishing contracts that contained illegal clauses, until they died of success.

On the one hand, the irruption of the iPhone changed the paradigm of the moment. The keyboard disappeared and became virtual. The screen now occupied the entire surface of the device. An app shop was created that changed the phone's functions to suit the consumer. Blackberry's CEO was contemptuous of the competition, unable to change his product, convinced that they knew what people wanted... and he was wrong.

On the other hand, when a business grows so fast, it is easy to raise suspicions in tax departments. The shrewd executive did not know how to tie up the ends and that led the company to ruin. I leave the outcome of the trial for your personal research or for when you see the film.

On a negative note, I would say that the characterisation of the main character, Mike Lazaridis, was stilted. You can tell from a distance that his hairstyle is a wig and it doesn't suit him at all. I looked up pictures of the real person and he doesn't look like that. But the truth is that the rest of the film kept my attention from beginning to end and I would even say that it was short.

In short, the film is entertaining with no pretensions other than to tell a true story. And it succeeds.

Synopsis: After moving to the city of Boston, Lily hopes to start a new life by opening her own flower shop. Eventually, she meets Ryle, a wealthy and successful neurosurgeon, and the two end up falling in love. What began as a promise of “happily ever after” gradually turns into a nightmare for Lily.

Have you ever fallen in love with someone to the point of seeing their flaws, but at the same time, ignoring them (even if the result is negative for you) just to have that person close to you? Have you ever wondered how all your past traumas impact your life in different ways? Have you ever felt inferior for loving someone who didn't recognize the value of that act? Have you ever been strong enough to recognize your own worth and get out of a situation that you clearly understand you don't deserve to live in? These, and some other, questions are played out in this narrative.

“Sometimes you have to break the cycle... Before the cycle breaks you”. At a certain point in the plot, Lily has a very clear vision of what is happening with her relationship. She finally realizes that she has already suffered systematic physical and psychological attacks throughout her life with Ryle. When this warning is lit in her mind, she finally begins to act to try to get out of this maze, but until that happens, she will need to face some challenges. At times she tries to overcome everything alone, but her abusive family past (in this case, all the physical and psychological attacks she saw her mother suffer with her father) insists on “hunting” her, bringing instability.

Understanding that it would not be possible to overcome all the conflicts on her own makes Lily seek support from other people, and from this point on the movie dives into deeper waters, but it is a shame that precisely in this part, the script is too shallow, depriving the audience of a more interesting narrative boldness. When you analyze this project as a whole, it is quite significant due to the importance of all the themes covered (the protagonist being the abusive relationship between a couple), but at the same time, it lacks deep development.

Deadline

Everything starts quite slowly (which justifies the more hours the movie has), and I believe that all of this was narratively purposeful so that the audience found enough time to connect and care about the characters (in this case, the protagonist couple) to the point of experiencing both sides of the same coin. To a certain extent this works, but when things start to get too slow, the atmosphere of this movie suffers from a “radical” change in its rhythm, in order to make up for “lost time”, but this ends up harming the conclusion of what was still going on. to come (which ends up being simplistic, considering all the complexity built previously).

Lily and Ryle have a seemingly perfect relationship, but they both have their own ghosts. Most of the time they hide them from each other to keep their relationship intact, but when the secrets of their pasts are uncovered, the relationship begins to crumble. Ryle shows a “new” side of himself, and Lily begins to suffer physical and psychological attacks. The supporting characters (with the exception of Atlas, who was Lily's love when she was a teenager) that orbit the plot do not add positively to the script, they only serve to “stretch” the plot.

The script wastes a lot of time in building Lily and Ryle's relationship, and is not bold in dealing with all types of abuse experienced by Lily. This “romanticization” of violence is one of the script's flaws, which despite being intelligent in showing how everything happens (and here there are two specific moments to realize this, making Lily see her situation from two totally different perspectives... one very simple and shallow, while the other is more complex and intense), can only scratch the surface of this bubble fueled by an “emotional dependence” in the search for the embodiment of “perfect love”. The movie had the potential to be much more provocative, but it wasted it.

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni lead the cast, and despite having good chemistry on screen, their connection is somewhat problematic in other aspects. I can't say if this was a deliberate decision in the script, but the fact is that they seem to live two types of relationships under the same roof. None of the performances are really good, however, they are interesting enough to keep the script standing. The same cannot be said for the supporting cast, which is limited to small, one-off scenes without much importance (with the exception of Brandon Sklenar, who plays the counterpoint).

It Ends with Us is a movie based on the book (with the same name) written by Colleen Hoover (who, incidentally, helped write this movie adaptation) and directed by Justin Baldoni (which in my opinion was not a good decision considering all the weaknesses and mistakes in his work in this role). Technically, the project has a notable quality, but that's not enough to make it something memorable (even though its main theme is something so emblematic). Despite being a well-intentioned project, purposefully light at times, potentially intense, inspiring and quite reflective (even though it is not very daring), it remains in a relatively safe region, and becomes “inert”.

Cuando se analiza este proyecto en su conjunto, resulta bastante significativo por la importancia de todos los temas tratados (el protagonista es la relación abusiva entre una pareja), pero al mismo tiempo le falta un desarrollo profundo.

Todo comienza bastante lento (lo que justifica las más horas que tiene la película), y creo que todo esto tuvo un propósito narrativo para que el público encontrara el tiempo suficiente para conectarse y preocuparse por los personajes (en este caso, la pareja protagonista) hasta el punto de experimentar ambas caras de la misma moneda. Hasta cierto punto esto funciona, pero cuando las cosas empiezan a ir demasiado lentas, la atmósfera de esta película sufre un cambio “radical” en su ritmo, para recuperar el “tiempo perdido”, pero esto termina perjudicando la conclusión de lo que aún estaba por venir (lo que resulta simplista, considerando toda la complejidad construida previamente).

Lily y Ryle tienen una relación aparentemente perfecta, pero ambos tienen sus propios fantasmas. La mayoría de las veces se los esconden el uno del otro para mantener intacta su relación, pero cuando se descubren los secretos de su pasado, la relación comienza a desmoronarse. Ryle muestra un lado “nuevo” de sí mismo y Lily comienza a sufrir ataques físicos y psicológicos. Los personajes secundarios (a excepción de Atlas, que fue el amor de Lily cuando era adolescente) que orbitan la trama no aportan nada positivo al guión, sólo sirven para “estirar” la trama.

El guión pierde mucho tiempo construyendo la relación entre Lily y Ryle, y no es audaz al abordar todos los tipos de abuso experimentado por Lily. Esta “romantización” de la violencia es uno de los fallos del guion, que a pesar de ser inteligente a la hora de mostrar cómo sucede todo (y aquí hay dos momentos concretos para darse cuenta de ello, haciendo que Lily vea su situación desde dos perspectivas totalmente diferentes... una muy simple y superficial, mientras que el otro es más complejo e intenso), sólo puede arañar la superficie de esta burbuja alimentada por una “dependencia emocional” en la búsqueda de la encarnación del “amor perfecto”. La película tenía potencial para ser mucho más provocativa, pero lo desperdició.

Blake Lively y Justin Baldoni lideran el reparto, y pese a tener buena química en pantalla, su conexión es algo problemática en otros aspectos. No puedo decir si fue una decisión deliberada en el guión, pero lo cierto es que parecen vivir dos tipos de relaciones bajo el mismo techo. Ninguna de las actuaciones es realmente buena, sin embargo, son lo suficientemente interesantes como para mantener el guión en pie. No se puede decir lo mismo del reparto secundario, que se limita a pequeñas escenas puntuales y sin mucha importancia (a excepción de Brandon Sklenar, que hace el contrapunto).

Romper el círculo es una película basada en el libro (del mismo nombre) escrito por Colleen Hoover (quien, por cierto, ayudó a escribir esta adaptación cinematográfica) y dirigida por Justi Baldoni (lo cual en mi opinión no fue una buena decisión considerando todas las debilidades y errores de su trabajar en este rol). Técnicamente, el proyecto tiene una calidad notable, pero eso no es suficiente para convertirlo en algo memorable (a pesar de que su tema principal es algo tan emblemático). A pesar de ser un proyecto bien intencionado, deliberadamente ligero a veces, potencialmente intenso, inspirador y bastante reflexivo (aunque no muy atrevido), permanece en una región relativamente segura y se vuelve “inerte”.

CRÍTICA DE FILME: “É Assim que Acaba” (2024)

Sinopse: Após se mudar para a cidade de Boston, Lily espera começar uma nova vida ao abrir à sua própria floricultura. Eventualmente, ela conhece Ryle, um neurocirurgião rico e bem sucedido, e os dois acabam se apaixonando. O que se iniciou como uma promessa de “felizes para sempre”, gradualmente vai se transformando em um pesadelo para Lily.

Você já se apaixonou por alguém a ponto de enxergar os seus defeitos, mas ao mesmo tempo, ignorá-los (ainda que o resultado seja negativo para você) apenas para ter essa pessoa perto de você? Você já se questionou sobre como todos os seus traumas do passado impactam à sua vida em diferentes fazes? Você já se sentiu inferior por amar alguém que não reconheceu o valor desse ato? Você já foi forte o suficiente para reconhecer o próprio valor e sair de uma situação que você claramente entende que não merece viver? Essas, e algumas outras, questões estão jogadas nesta narrativa.

“Às vezes é preciso quebrar o ciclo... Antes que o ciclo quebre você”. Em um determinado momento da trama, Lily tem uma visão muito clara o que está acontecendo com o seu relacionamento. Ela finalmente se dá conta de que já sofreu agressões físicas e psicológicas sistemáticas ao longo da sua vida com Ryle. Quando esse alerta é aceso na sua mente, ela finalmente começa a agir para tentar sair desse labirinto, mas até que isso aconteça, ela precisará enfrentar alguns desafios. Em alguns momentos ela tenta superar tudo sozinha, mas o seu passado familiar abusivo (neste caso, todas as agressões físicas e psicológicas que ela viu a mãe sofrer junto ao seu pai) insiste em “caçá-la”, trazendo instabilidades.

Entender que não seria possível superar todos os conflitos por conta própria faz com que Lily busque apoio de outras pessoas, e partir deste ponto o filme mergulha em águas mais profundas, mas é uma pena que justamente nessa parte, o roteiro seja raso demais, privando o público de uma ousadia narrativa mais interessante. Quando você analisa esse projeto como um todo, ele é algo bastante significante pela importância de todos os temas abordados (o protagonismo sendo o relacionamento abusivo entre um casal), mas ao mesmo tempo, é carente de um desenvolvimento profundo.

Tudo começa de uma maneira bastante lenta (o que justifica as mais de suas horas que o filme tem), e eu acredito que tudo isso tenha sido narrativamente proposital para que o público encontrasse tempo suficiente para se conectar e se importar com os personagens (neste caso, o casal de protagonistas) a ponto de viver os dois lados dessa mesma moeda. Até certo ponto isso funciona, mas quando as coisas começam a ficar lentas demais, a atmosfera desse filme sofre com uma mudança “radical” no seu ritmo, afim de recuperar o “tempo perdido”, mas isso acaba prejudicando a conclusão do que ainda estava por vir (que acaba sendo simplista, considerando toda a complexidade construída anteriormente).

Lily e Ryle vivem um relacionamento aparentemente perfeito, mas ambos têm os seus próprios fantasmas. Durante a maior parte do tempo eles os omitem uns dos outros para manter a relação deles intacta, mas quando os segredos de seus passados são escavados, o relacionamento começa a ruir. Ryle mostra um “novo” lado seu, e Lily começa a sofrer agressões físicas e psicológicas. Os personagens coadjuvantes (com exceção do Atlas, que foi o amor da Lily quando era uma adolescente) que orbitam a trama não somam positivamente ao roteiro, apenas servem para “esticar” à trama.

O roteiro perde muito tempo na construção da relação de Lily e Ryle, e é pouco ousado em lidar com todos os tipos de abusos vividos por Lily. Essa “romantização” da violência é uma das falhas do roteiro, que apesar de ter sido inteligente ao mostrar como tudo acontece (e aqui há dois momentos específicos para perceber isso, fazendo com que Lily veja à sua situação por dois prismas totalmente diferentes... um muito simples e raso, enquanto o outro é mais complexo e intenso), só consegue arranhar superficialmente essa redoma alimentada por uma “dependência emocional” na busca pela personificação ao “amor perfeito”. O filme tinha potencial para ser muito mais provocativo, mas desperdiçou isso.

Blake Lively e Justin Baldoni lideram o elenco, e apesar de terem uma boa química na tela, tem uma conexão meio que problemática nos demais aspectos. Não posso dizer se isso foi uma decisão proposital do roteiro, mas o fato é que eles parecem vivem dois tipos de relacionamentos sob o mesmo teto. Nenhuma das performances é realmente boa, porém, são suficientemente interessantes para manter o roteiro de pé. O mesmo não pode ser dito do elenco de apoio, que é resumido a pequenas cenas pontuais sem tanta importância (com exceção de Brandon Sklenar, que faz o contraponto).

É Assim que Acaba é um filme baseado no livro (de mesmo nome) escrito por Colleen Hoover (que aliás, ajudou a escrever essa adaptação cinematográfica) e dirigido por Justi Baldoni (o que na minha opinião não foi uma boa decisão considerando todas as fragilidades e equívocos do trabalho dele nessa função). Tecnicamente, o projeto tem uma qualidade notória, mas isso não é o suficiente para torná-lo em algo memorável (ainda que o seu tema principal seja algo tão emblemático). Apesar de ser um projeto bem intencionado, propositalmente leve em alguns momentos, potencialmente intenso, inspirador e bastante reflexivo (mesmo não sendo muito ousado), ele fica numa região relativamente segura, e se torna “inerte”.

The Penguin (2024): Bliss - S01E03 - RECAP

I'm a bit behind my TV Series mostly because of work related stuff but thanks that's over now and hope I can now concentrate more on pushing some posts, The Penguin series has a lot of great feedback and reception from both critics and the audience, people has been loving this series, I have to confess we have a couple of banger TV Series on 2024.

Bliss", The Penguin Episode 3 remains a solid episode and keeps revealing a dark and thrilling aspect of Gotham City crime, this is further expose on the show by exploring each characters reasons for doing things and their past, especially Victor, Oz’s second in command, I mean its just the two of them. This is another of those episodes where they develop more each character, through out the series I guess we going to get more of this type of episode specially for the main characters and so far we missing Sofia's rewind type of episode, we already got Oz's and Victor's.

We start with a glimpse of the night of Riddler’s attack on Gotham to finally get a view of the carnage from the ground level, from the victims perspective and not just the news. It is a grim dark side perspective revealing the life of Victor before the flood, I say dark because of the aftermath, things were going OK for him before the flood, he has a family whom he loves and a girlfriend whose main aspiration is to free themselves from the neighborhood they live in since she wants something better but nothing fancy. It is important to notice that, in this scene, the effects using water to floods buildings are magnificent; the water floods the buildings in matters of seconds. A very fast and violent scenario how Victor's life change from one second to another, I'm sure we will get other stories like this, goes very well with the rest of the series. The scene is based on the election day, November 5th, a few hours before the Riddler’s seawall bombs explode, notice that campaign flyers for Bella Real are labeled “Real Change” scattered throughout the area, an irony because of what is about to happen. Victor’s family is presented including his mother, father and a sister, with him watching from the front building, gives us an idea of the life that Victor left behind.

In the present we get to see Oz and Sofia still working together as they attempt to take charge of the drug dealing business in the city of Gotham, as they are bringing in a new product known as Bliss, in my opinion the name is a bit weak I was expecting something harder but as Oz mention its a party drug, a powerful stimulant euphoric that is produced from special mushrooms, Bliss as they call it is original from Arkham Asylum, which might mean there is more to the story than just the inmates, the staff of the Asylum and possibly Hugo Strange or Scarecrow, this fact really makes your imagination fly when you know a bit about Batman story from all the movies but specially animated series.

This begins to escalate as Oz and Sofia try to involve the Triads into their business and then meet the crime boss Zhao, Oz is a sleazy corrupt guy who doesn't seem to be in best terms with everyone, the Triads is another example so its not easy for them to jump in with business, kind of the political shenanigans of the series, classic power struggles but specially for Sofia been a Falcone. On this scene we get to watch Sofia and Oz getting closer as they get to the edge of the knife when they lie about their support from the Falcone family and Zhao asks for proof but been Oz the sleek guy he is already had a card in his favor.

Once again Farrell does a great job of expanding the character of Oz and has a way with both the threatening nature of the role and the likeability of course even when he is the liar of the series you still rule for him. He does a great job in this episode of giving us a small taste of what we rarely see of Oz, the softer side, specially during a scene when he goes both soft and hard on Victor. Victor's girlfriend name Graciela shows up back on his life making him rethink his current situation as part of the Falcone family even at the low level he is but still part of a gangster organization, making him wants to go away, after a few kind of childish scenes he finally had to tell Oz one way or another, here is where Oz show him how much he likes him and knows what is to be in that position, he wants no slave just loyalty, its weird this is what he expect been he trying to over throne the Falcone's doing the total opposite but I guess that's is how the game is?

On this episode we also get to watch Sofia and Oz get closer as I mention, he confess it was him ratting her but never thought her father was going to put her in Arkham, its also kind of weird but I'm not sure if Oz actually wants her? this relationship is a love and hate relationship that I guess wont last for long after how this episode ends.

What I think the episode does best is growing the world of Gotham, new factions show up to the scene, such as the Triads and mention other criminal gangs such as the Neon Dragons and the Odessa mob, small touches such as these make this version of Gotham feel fresh and part of the Batman universe, is how Gotham was that much of a success after all the details and characters the series brings to life.

Drug’s connection to Arkham Asylum gives a lot of reasons to doubt who is really behind its production and sale, does Sofia has another partner? besides Oz, I mean Oz is just the connection for distribution. When they start selling Blizz at the club there is a scene where at first I though Victor took some Blizz because he start having all this hallucination but I guess is mainly because of all the stress he is going through rather than taking the drug, a bit confusing scene, eventually I think Victor will fall for the dark side after getting tired of been the good guy and nothing going in his favor, this time he lost his girlfriend and Oz plants the seed making Victor wanting more from life and just take it no matter the consequences.

Something I forgot to mention about the relationship between Oz and Sofia, he was previously Sofia’s driver before she was transferred to Arkham, this makes things a bit complicated for both since they know cant trust each other, both are attempting to outsmart each other even though they have a sort of respect for each other nonetheless.

The most crucial part of the episode is how Victor at the ends decides to stay with Oz in the insane world he lives in, Victor had all the time and money to go away with Graciela even had Oz permission but even though it was his decision and the series wants us to believe he did it because he wanted I don't think it was the case, I think he did it to not get her involve because he knows that one way or another this part of his life can get to them some how, its the classic mob movie where gangster get young guys into the business but then when they know too much they can never get out without loosing their life.

There still so much from this episode that can be said but I don't want to make this a 5 pages long post, different than other series I don't think we going to see any good guy show up anytime soon, this is a gangster series so its all about the different families been manipulated by Oz going at each other for the power, also a series with a lot of humor, I have notice how some people are asking for Batman to show up but I doubt that will happen, at least not on season 1.
After two great suspense action episodes we get an episode that mostly tell just Victor's story and how he finally accepts what life has put in front of him, this time been part of a gangster organization leaving everything behind, there are still five more episodes to go so I guess we get at least two more episodes that go back in time to provide more context to the story, so far I can't find anything wrong with the series, both the cast and scripts are great add to that the visuals of the city and all the details the series is exposing about Gotham underground business life style.
