Looking through my list of anime I've seen—because I have a list of anime I still want to watch—I remembered I've never talked about Tsubasa Chronicle. It's an anime I both liked and disliked at the same time. I don't know, I mean, the story is interesting, but it confused me. I'm not sure if I understood the ending and everything that was happening correctly, or if I just made up the plot myself. Anyway, this story is like a mix of several characters from its creators, CLAMP, especially from Cardcaptor Sakura, so if you liked that anime, you might be interested in this one.

Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle (ツバサ - レザボアクロニクル)…

Regarding the plot…

The story follows young Syaoran, an archaeologist who, after a series of events affecting his friend Sakura, the princess of the Clow Kingdom, finds her soul manifesting as feathers scattered across countless dimensions. To retrieve them, Syaoran seeks the help of the Witch of Dimensions, who allows him to travel between worlds in exchange for a heartbreaking price: even if he recovers all the feathers, the bond between them will be severed, and she will never remember who he is.

Personal opinion

Personally, I ended up watching this story because, well, I thought it was like a continuation of Cardcaptor Sakura, and well, big mistake, because the story is completely different. Even though it has the same characters, it clearly works and develops in a totally different way, ending with a feeling of emptiness towards the end, because it's not really a sad or happy ending, I wouldn't know how to put it, it's more about doubts and confusion. I feel like it's a project, or was a rather ambitious project, that sought the scale of a Greek tragedy mixed with a modern multiverse, and the result is an experience that changes drastically and that, yes, tends to be confusing, like you understand it and at the same time you don't.

That said, it can't be denied that it's deceptive, as the plot isn't simple, and perhaps that complexity is what you'll really enjoy. Furthermore, the concept of the price you have to pay for the witch to do something works very well and is truly painful; it's not just about magic, it's about real loss. Something I should mention, in case you want to watch it, is that it is slow at the beginning, and I think they add filler, if I remember correctly. But specifically in the OVAs, the action picks up, and the secrets and all the entanglements that existed silently from the beginning begin to gain momentum. It becomes a labyrinth of time paradoxes and moral dilemmas that force you to pay very close attention; it's not a series to watch in the background, it's a story that demands you question the identity of the protagonists.

Now, regarding the animation, it does decline a bit. The fact that the characters look stretched and that it's not very fluid shows that the budget was limited, although I must admit that it improved a lot in the OVAs. And what I loved most was the music. I still remember the opening and ending themes for everything (the series and OVAs), and those tracks were truly remarkable. Furthermore, the music didn't just become background music; it dictated the feeling of the series.

The music, for me, is the strongest point of this anime. Everything fits the story perfectly, and you connect with the characters and their scenes thanks to the soundtrack. (I also appreciate the Spanish versions of the opening and ending themes.)

Worldbuilding: The creativity in designing worlds with their own rules is truly fascinating and intriguing.

Character Evolution: The development of Syaoran, from a kind boy to a hardened warrior, and others, shows that its characters are not one-dimensional.

The Multiverse Concept: Long before the multiverse became common in film, this series already handled it with astonishing internal consistency, organically connecting various works (like xxxHOLiC).

The OVAs: They are a masterpiece of animation and storytelling. If you manage to watch them, the reward is one of the darkest and most exciting plots in the genre.

Negative points…

Pacing and Filler: The beginning and the parts not found in the manga diminish the impact of the mysterious ending.

Inconsistent Animation: While the OVAs are visually stunning, the two TV seasons have fairly standard animation.

Confusing and Excessive Complexity: A lot happens, and if you understand the time paradox and all that, I think you'll better grasp the whole mess the characters are caught up in.

Inconclusive Ending in the Anime: The TV anime never finishes the main story. It ends abruptly, and to understand the ending, you have to read the manga or watch the OVAs (which, in any case, have time jumps that can be confusing).

Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle is a melancholic work. It's a love letter to CLAMP fans, but also a cruel story about growing up and what we're willing to leave behind to save someone. It's not perfect, and I think its biggest flaw was its conclusion and the lengths it went to to reveal who and what each character was, because the depth of its themes and the beauty of its music make it an unforgettable experience if you can get past its slow start.

Revisando la lista de animes que he visto, porque en la misma tengo animes para ver, recordé que nunca hablé de Tsubasa Chronicle, siendo un anime que me gustó y me disgustó al mismo tiempo, no sé, ósea es interesante la historia, pero me enredaba, no sé si entendí bien el final y todo lo que estaba pasando o yo misma me inventé lo que era la trama en sí. En fin, esta historia es como una mezcla de varios personajes de su creadoras, CLAMP, especialmente de Sakura Card Captor, por lo que, si te gustó este anime, puede que te llame la atención este otro.

En cuanto a la trama…

Opinión personal

En lo personal, termine viendo esta historia porque bueno, pensé que era como una continuación de Sakura Card Captor y pues, grave error, porque la historia es totalmente distinta, aunque tenga a los personajes de la misma, claramente funciona y se desarrolla totalmente diferente, terminando con un vacío hacia ese final, porque realmente no es un final triste ni feliz, no sabría como decirlo, es más de dudas y confusiones. Siento que, es un proyecto, o era un proyecto bastante ambicioso, que buscaba la escala de una tragedia griega mezclada con un multiverso moderno, y el resultado es una experiencia que cambia drásticamente y que, si, tienden a confundir, como entiendes y a la vez no.

Eso sí, no se puede negar que engaña, pues trama sencilla no es y, quizás, esa complejidad les gusté mucho, aunado que, el concepto del precio que deben pagar para que la bruja haga algo, funciona muy bien y realmente es doloroso, no se trata solo de magia, se trata de pérdida real; algo que debo acotar, por si desean verlo, es que, al inicio si es lento y creo que meten relleno, si mal no recuerdo, pero, específicamente en los OVAS, es que la acción toma lugar y los secretos y todo los enrollo que existían desde el inicio silenciosamente, empiezan a tomar fuerza, se convierte en un laberinto de paradojas temporales y dilemas morales que te obligan a prestar muchísima atención; no es una serie para ver de fondo, es una historia que te exige cuestionar la identidad de los protagonistas.

Ahora bien, en referencia con la animación, pues si decae un poco, el hecho de que los personajes se vean estirados y que no tenga tanta fluidez, se nota que el presupuesto era limitado, aunque debo admitir que en los OVAS mejoraron mucho. Y lo que más me encanto, la música, aun recuerdo su opening y ending de todo (la serie y ovas), y realmente eran destacables esos temas, además que, la música no solo se convirtió en el acompañamiento; es la que dicta el sentimiento de la serie.

Puntos positivos…

La música, para mi es el punto fuerte de este anime, todo concuerda con la historia y llegas a conectar con los personajes y sus escenas gracias a la banda sonora. (Agradezco también su versión en español de los temas de entrada y salida)

Construcción de Mundo (Worldbuilding): La creatividad para diseñar mundos con reglas propias, realmente es fascinante e intrigante.

Evolución de Personajes: El desarrollo de Syaoran, de un chico amable a un guerrero endurecido y otros más, detalla que sus personajes no son planos.

El Concepto del Multiverso: Mucho antes de que el multiverso fuera común en el cine, esta serie ya lo manejaba con una coherencia interna asombrosa, conectando varias obras (como xxxHOLiC) de manera orgánica.

Las OVAs: Son una obra maestra de la animación y la narrativa. Si logras llegar a ellas, la recompensa es una de las tramas más oscuras y emocionantes del género.

Puntos negativos…

Ritmo y Relleno: El inicio y las partes donde no aparecen en el manga, le quitan peso a ese misterioso que el desenlace aguarda.

Animación Inconsistente: Mientras que las OVAs son visualmente increíbles, las dos temporadas de TV tienen una animación bastante estándar.

Confusión y complejidad excesiva: realmente pasan muchas cosas y, si entiendes sobre la paradoja del tiempo y todo ello, creo que comprenderás más todo el rollo en el que se ven envueltos los personajes.

Final Inconcluso en Anime: El anime de televisión nunca termina la historia real. Se queda en un punto muerto y, para entender el final, es obligatorio leer el manga o ver las OVAs (que de todos modos dejan saltos temporales que pueden confundir).

Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle es una obra melancólica. Es una carta de amor a los fans de CLAMP, pero también una historia cruel sobre el crecimiento y lo que estamos dispuestos a dejar atrás para salvar a alguien. No es perfecta y creo que en lo mas falló fue su conclusión y a lo que llegaron a tanto para saber quien y que era cada personaje, porque la profundidad de sus temas y la belleza de su música la hacen una experiencia inolvidable si logras superar su inicio lento.

The inaugural season of Game of Thrones was, by almost any measure, a remarkable piece of television. Many would argue—with considerable justification—that it remains the series’ finest hour, a sentiment that can be attributed to its unparalleled fidelity to George R. R. Martin’s dense literary source and, perhaps more importantly, to the sheer novelty of its concept. It arrived unburdened by the crushing weight of expectation and the emerging cult status that would later define the phenomenon. Season two, adapting the 1998 novel A Clash of Kings, thus faced a formidable challenge: to maintain momentum while expanding an already sprawling narrative. The North Remembers, the sophomore season’s opener, commences in a satisfactory manner, deftly re-establishing the chessboard of Westerosi politics. Yet, for all its competence, it cannot quite replicate the electric, world-building shock of the series premiere. It is a workmanlike and efficient episode, but one that already hints at the narrative compromises and diluted focus that would occasionally plague the later seasons.

Bolstered by HBO’s confidence and an increased budget, the episode exhibits a slightly grander scope in its plot, settings, and dramatis personae. Showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss perform a commendable juggling act, updating almost every major storyline and packing them into a single hour. The result is a densely woven tapestry that tackled a huge amount of exposition and scene-setting but never wasted a word. This leanness is the episode’s greatest strength; it is a thematically focused instalment that, unlike some of its predecessor’s more scattered instalments, zeroes in on the corrupting nature of power and the vacuum left by Ned Stark’s death.

The action resumes in King’s Landing, where the boy-king Joffrey celebrates his name day with a tournament that is less a contest of skill than a sadistic spectacle of slaughter. In a moment of quiet cunning, Sansa Stark manipulates the monstrous monarch into sparing the life of the drunken knight Ser Dontos Hollard (Tony Way), revealing a survivor’s intelligence beneath her courtly façade. This scene is swiftly followed by the arrival of Tyrion Lannister, who assumes the role of Hand of the King with characteristic wit and immediately begins needling his sister Cersei over the strategic folly of Ned Stark’s execution. Meanwhile, the City Watch, under orders from Joffrey and Cersei, hunts down and murders every male infant suspected of being Robert Baratheon’s bastard—a brutal sequence of infanticide that underscores the episode’s central theme of power exercised without conscience. The sole survivor of this purge, the blacksmith Gendry, is revealed in the final scene to be travelling northwards with the disguised Arya Stark, whose disappearance vexes both Lannisters and Starks alike.

Concurrently, Robb Stark, now the King in the North, attempts to parley with the Lannisters. His terms—full independence for the North and the return of his sisters—are predictably unacceptable, making the continuation of war a near certainty. In a fateful decision, he heeds the counsel of his captive-turned-ally, Theon Greyjoy, and releases him to treat with his father, Balon, on the Iron Islands. This narrative thread, while briefly touched upon, sets in motion one of the season’s most tragic arcs. North of the Wall, Lord Commander Jeor Mormont’s ranging party finds the wildling settlements deserted, save for the holdfast of the repulsive Craster. Robert Pugh’s portrayal of the incestuous patriarch, who lives with his daughters as his wives, is suitably unsettling, serving as both a source of supplies and grim foreshadowing of the horrors beyond the Wall.

Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen’s storyline enters a period of desperate hardship. The mother of dragons possesses her three mythical hatchlings, but they remain small and symbolically potent rather than militarily useful. She, Ser Jorah, and her decimated khalasar are forced to trek through the desolate Red Waste, a plotline that emphasises her vulnerability and the long road ahead.

The most significant new narrative, however, erupts on the island fortress of Dragonstone. Here, Stephen Dillane’s Stannis Baratheon, stern and unyielding, declares himself the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. He is counseled by the pragmatic smuggler-turned-knight, Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham), but is increasingly under the sway of the mysterious Red Priestess, Melisandre (Carice van Houten). Their introduction brings a potent new religious dimension to the series, with the cult of the Lord of Light positioned as a disruptive force against the established Faith of the Seven and the old gods of the North. This subplot culminates in the tragic poisoning of the loyal Maester Cressen, a scene that efficiently establishes Melisandre’s otherworldly power and Stannis’s ruthless new path.

Directed by Alan Taylor, The North Remembers is, by its own admission, an episode light on forward plot propulsion. Much of its runtime is devoted to exposition: at Craster’s Keep, we learn of the desertion of Mance Rayder; in Essos, the complexities of the geography are hinted at. While necessary, this occasionally gives the episode a feeling of table-setting.

The introduction of the new Dragonstone characters, however, is handled with superb economy. Dillane’s Stannis is a masterpiece of repressed fury, Cunningham’s Davos provides a much-needed moral compass, and van Houten’s Melisandre simmers with enigmatic menace. The production also benefits immensely from new filming locations in Croatia, particularly Dubrovnik, whose ancient walls and sun-bleached stone provide a perfect, tangible embodiment of King’s Landing, elevating the show’s visual grandeur.

Not every element succeeds. Some scenes feel like pure filler, such as the heavy-handed moment where Cersei threatens Petyr Baelish’s life—a exchange that, while showcasing Lena Headey’s commanding presence, adds little to the narrative. Similarly, a brief scene of the captive Jaime Lannister menaced by a direwolf feels like a gratuitous showcase for the series’ improved CGI capabilities rather than an organic story beat.

Nevertheless, as a season opener, The North Remembers is undeniably a success. Critics praised Tyrion’s development and the compelling new cast. It is a solid, confident piece of television that successfully re-immerses the audience in Martin’s world, managing its enormous cast and multiple threads with impressive dexterity. It may lack the pioneering brilliance of the first season’s premiere, and its pace is more deliberate than thrilling, but it fulfils its primary duty: it remembers the past, sets the stage for the coming clash of kings, and promises a great deal of fire and blood to come.

My Mother's Wedding (2023) || Movie Review

I think most people would agree that family relationships are among the most complex, yet also the most rewarding for those who are fortunate to be surrounded by understanding people. My Mother's Wedding (2023) is an interesting film that centers around family and all the dramas that come with it. The title got my interest and also, seeing that Scarlett Johansson is one of the lead actresses in the movie made me decide to watch it.

Directed by Kristin Scott Thomas and based on a screenplay by John Micklethwait, this movie stars Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham, Freida Pinto and others.

It focuses on three sisters living their separate lives who must return home for their mother's third wedding. She's been married twice and widowed. Katherine (Scarlett Johansson), a Royal Navy captain, is reluctant to attend the wedding because she can't get the memory of her late father out of her mind. She keeps insisting that her mother doesn't take her new husband's last name.

The eldest sister, Victoria (Sienna Miller), is a successful movie star, vivacious and happy for their mother. She's been married before and divorced and sees nothing wrong with their mother's decision. The youngest sister, Georgina (Emily Beecham), is a nurse and in support of the wedding but her attention is more on whether her husband is cheating or not. She hires a detective to handle it.

The mother's wedding forces the sisters to confront their idealised image of the fathers they lost and how it has affected their adult relationships. Will their mother go ahead with the wedding despite the reservations of Katherine?

My Review And Rating

This movie didn't turn out the way I expected. I hoped it would be more gripping, instead the slow pace and storytelling made it feel like a bit of a drag.

Though labeled a comedy drama, I didn't really see much of the comedy in this movie. It concentrates on the three daughters, memories of their late fathers and whether or not they are in support of their mother's wedding. So I'd say the plot is fine: a familiar family drama that some viewers may relate to but nothing remarkable.

The drama however is very present in almost every scene. The movie focuses on the physical and emotional effects of the wedding on the daughters and whether the mother realises these or not. The cartoonish scenes that act as Katherine's flashbacks are a fine touch to the story. It gives viewers an insight into Katherine's mind and the things she's dealing with. For the other sisters, their confrontations and outbursts are the clues that tells us they are struggling too.

I like that the director gave each of the daughters an equally decent amount of screen time. The focus was on their emotions and the effects on their relationships, family and romantic.

There are some subplots like the detective hired to investigate Georgina's husband that I feel distracts us from the central theme of the movie. It overshadows some parts of the main plot that I think the director should have explored. The sisters' have troubled relationships but the movie doesn't shine much light on these relationships and whether they would be resolved.

The acting is convincing. Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller are audacious actresses and they embodied their roles very well. The three sisters have great chemistry as siblings and their relationship with their mother is interesting to watch. Also, the cinematography is good. The visuals are colourful and okay.

Rating this movie, I’d give it 3 stars out of 5 mostly because of the acting. The plot is fine but I think the screenplay might be the reason for the drag or slow pace. I understand this is Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut but the movie doesn't quite hit like I’d hoped. If you have seen this movie, let me know your thoughts.

In the history of cinema, numerous grand films have ascended to classic status through the sheer quality of the talents assembled both behind and in front of the camera. Yet, the chances for obtaining such hallowed recognition were invariably magnified if the filmmakers also possessed the impeccable timing. Few films in history have benefited from being crafted at such a perfectly opportune moment as the 1932 prison drama I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang. Released at the nadir of the Great Depression and in the brief, audacious window of Pre-Code Hollywood, the film harnessed a potent blend of social outrage, raw narrative power, and cinematic modernity to create a work that remains a searing indictment of systemic injustice and a landmark of American realism.

The film’s formidable impact is rooted in its startling provenance: the true-life ordeal of Robert Elliott Burns. A World War I veteran, Burns had gained notoriety for escaping Georgia’s notoriously brutal penal system, rebuilding his life in Chicago as a respected publisher, only to be rearrested and returned to prison. Hello, film buffs! I hope you’re having a good start to the week. I’d seen several posts about the film Rental Family, including one from my friend @erigm, who always shares great reviews and insights with us. Her post piqued my curiosity about the film, not least because it stars Brendan Fraser, who plays the lead role. Another thing that caught my attention was that it was filmed in Tokyo and the whole story is set in that city, which makes this kind of story seem more original to me. I really liked this film, so I’d love for you to read my review of Rental Family, where nothing is what it seems.

Había visto varias publicaciones de la película Rental Family, entre ellas la de mi amiga @erigm quien siempre nos comparte grandes reseñas y reflexiones. Su post me causó curiosidad por la película y también porque sale Brendan Fraser quien es el protagonista de la historia. Otra cosa que me llamó la atención fue que la filmaron en Tokio y todo el contexto de la historia se da en esa ciudad, lo que hace que me parezca más original este tipo de historias. The story follows Philip (Brendan Fraser), a man who is in debt and desperately needs to find a new job. That’s when he comes across a company called Rental Family, which promises him he can continue doing what he loves—acting—but this job is different and rather unusual. Fraser must follow certain rules when hired as an actor to fulfil various requests from people seeking the service, and in return they can pay him for his performance. At first, he is very professional, even though he knows what he is doing isn’t entirely right, but he carries on because he needs the job and the money. Until he forms too close a bond with the people he meets, and from there everything begins to change.

The other role is a bit more delicate: Fraser has to play a father so that a young girl can start at a new school; her mother hires him for the job and introduces them. The company, called Rental Family, presents itself as a normal business but provides this kind of service, and it employs two other Japanese staff members who serve the same purpose as Fraser. However, it is rather strange and sad that someone should have to hire such a service, and that the person providing it has to pretend to be someone they are not. Nevertheless, thanks to Fraser’s performance, I felt I connected deeply with the story; although there is drama and a touch of comedy, I felt I was watching a story that was worthwhile and that leaves you with a positive feeling of having seen a good film. I’m glad that Brendan Fraser is still acting and that, despite the time he spent away from the screen, he still feels passionate about what he does.

La empresa llamada Rental Family se encubre como una empresa normal pero da este tipo de servicios y tiene a otros dos trabajadores japoneses que también cumplen el mismo propósito que Fraser. Sin embargo, puede ser algo muy curioso y triste que alguien tenga que contratar un servicio y que el que lo da tenga que fingir ser alguien que no es. The situations depicted are crazy, but they manage to leave you with something to think about, particularly because, through this kind of work, Fraser was able to find a safe space and people with whom, although he met through work, the bond was far more important. Las situaciones que se presentan son alocadas, pero que tienen una forma de dejarte una buena reflexión sobre todo porque al hacer este tipo de trabajo, Fraser pudo encontrar un espacio seguro y personas que aunque conoció por el trabajo, el vínculo fue más importante. Disfrute mucho de esta historia y me encantó la película, siento que la forma de actuar de Fraser es genuina y que vale la pena verlo en escena. Además, la escenografía y la dirección de Hikari le dio ese toque de estar en un país como Japón, tan actualizado y desarrollado en tantos aspectos. Hay que destacar que las imágenes fueron espectaculares y muestran lo increíble que es Japón, con sus grandes edificios y las costumbres de ese país. Si quieren ver algo que les haga reír de vez en cuando y que también les dejé una sensación bonita, no duden en ver esta película que está increíble. 🎥🍿

Two hundred million dollars is a number that should buy you a lot of things, a real script, a reason to care about the person on screen, maybe even one line of dialogue that does not sound like it was generated from a list of things action heroes say in trailers, and yet here is The Gray Man spending every cent of that Netflix check on bullets and drone shots while the actual human beings stuck inside the movie look around confused about what movie they are supposed to be making. I decided to give it a try after watching Gosling latest movie Project Hail Mary since this was describe as one of his best work and its not true at all, he has way better movies than this, this was a under the table Netflix failure if not very meh. The Russo brothers have been riding the Avengers goodwill for years now but the further they get from Marvel money and Marvel infrastructure the clearer it becomes that a lot of what worked in those movies was not them, it was the machine, and The Gray Man is the kind of movie that shows you the difference real fast. Ryan Gosling is a legitimately capable actor who has done some of the most interesting work of his generation in movies like Drive and Blade Runner 2049, and watching him play Sierra Six, who is essentially a walking empty vessel with good reflexes, feels like a quiet waste of a very expensive talent, the character doesnt have that momentum, no point of view, no reason to be interesting beyond the fact that Gosling is doing probably his best that cant even be notice. The movie opens with a textbook setup where Six is recruited out of a prison cell by a government guy named Fitzroy, played by Billy Bob Thornton who is doing his low key southern charmer thing, and the deal is simple, you work for us or you rot in here and then you just almost stand by for aabout twenty minutes of setup before the movie finally admits what it actually is.

Chris Evans is basically the only thing stopping this movie from becoming pure second monitor entertaiment, Chris is the one that goes all in as Lloyd Hansen, who is a completely ridiculous villain and that full commitment is easily the most fun thing in the movie. The mustache, the sweaters, the total lack of redeeming qualities, Evans knows exactly what kind of character he is playing and you can tell the guy is just having a good time at it. The action looks impressive in a technical sense too, especially the Prague fountain sequence where the drone shots and the stunt work actually have some style and purpose behind them, you can respect the effort even when the rest of the movie is kinda meh. There is also a part of the movie where Six becomes a protector for Claire, Fitzroy’s niece, and that could have added some real emotion to the story. It is not a bad idea at all but very average movie for the amount of marketing the put into it. The problem is the movie gives it almost no room to breathe before moving on, Ana de Armas also does what she can with her role and looks like a star every time she is on screen, she is great in the action but she also gives off the energy of someone who knows she is too good for this movie.

There is this airplane scene where they just going at each other throwing hands while the entire fuselage is almost comming apart around them, that is when the movie goes full CGI overload and just start becoming bloaded, ngl it does looks expensive but its more like trying to get your attention rathern than earning your attention, like the production knew the story was not doing the job so it kept turning up the spectacle hoping nobody would notice the reason behind all the flashy CGI. The whole thing has this strange washed out colors too, like someone in post forgot to turn the saturation up and every city they blow through, Bangkok, Prague, London, looks equally flat and equally fake. Rege Jean Page shows up as the antagonist and I hate to say it because the guy has charisma in other things but every scene where he is supposed to feel menacing just sits there not doing anything, flat delivery in a flat role and the movie tries to add some actual weight to Six through flashbacks about abuse and trauma that feel like they were dropped in because someone looked at the script and said this character needs a backstory, not because anyone actually figured out what that backstory should do for the movie. The moment where Six gets a blade through his hand and keeps fighting like he caught a splinter tells you everything about the movie not really taking in consideration concequences or at least trying to stay close to reality. Gosling and Evans have exactly one scene that actually hits and it was expected to happen, its when they finally clash with eacy other, and all of the sudden it feels like this was the right direction of the movie, this is the movie that could have been made with these two if anyone had bothered to write it right.

Compared to how much Netflix spent on it against something like other Netflix originals, for example Red Notice at least knew it was empty nonsense and had a little fun with that. The Gray Man is more annoying because it takes itself way too seriously, always reaching for depth and seriousness that it never actually earns. Other similar failures like Six Underground that kinda makes me mad almost immediately with how aggressively Michael Bay was throwing chaos at the screen, so The Gray Man is better than that at least but fits just in the same hype train that never really deliver. It is more coherent got to give it, but getting over that very low bar does not automatically make it a movie I would tell anyone to watch, it remains in the lower meh range. The stunt and action work is clearly being done by people who know exactly what they are doing, and you can feel the skill in some of the fight scenes even when the story around them is completely empty. The problem is that good craft without a story behind it will always feel empty like they just doing the action scenes for the show but you really dont care about the characters and it takes the sense of danger out of it, and that is basically what this movie turns into. It is a very long, very polished vague content that somehow cost two hundred million dollars. The movie keeps piling on new cities, new characters, and new threats, but none of it really builds into anything with actual weight. By the time its past half mark of the movie, you can feel the whole thing starting to fall flat even with all the action and spectable that it kept pumping, like it kept adding more and more on top to see if it clicks or get some dopamine into your brain so you look the other side.

I walked out of this thing feeling like I had been handed a very expensive gift in a box that turned out to be completely empty, the production quality is not a problem at all and Evans alone is worth at least watching the movie once but only if you go in with total transparency about what you are getting into, but there is nothing, nothing that grabs you and keeps you interested into the movie, there is that drama and sense of character building missing as in any good action movie, you cant be in between, either you are all show or you put some intention behind it but the problem is that when they try they just make things too complicated. Evans makes Lloyd Hansen the kind of villain you want to see get his own movie where he is still a total bastard but at least he is the center of something, because watching him chew through this script is the only time The Gray Man feels like it has actual life in it. If you get to watch this movie just be aware that it feels fancy, its loud, got action into it, but its not as good as it seems, you for sure have seen worst movie so its not like its the worst movie any of this actors have done. This one lands at a 6/10 from me, my post probably feels like a rant but its just that after watching Project Hail Mary I took some interest into Gosling work, specially for any action movies he has done and it has been mention how this movie compares but it was just total bs and pure marketing hype because its been about 10 years since Blade Runner 2049 and First Man came out, yes it is watchable streaming content that you will have forgotten entirely after a week, go in with zero expectations and the Evans factor might just be enough to carry you through it. Yes this was a delayed rant on a movie from 4 years ago that I regret watching comparing to the recent highs of Gosling with Project Hail Mary.

Hace poco me recomendaron ver una serie de animé que me cautivó por quien cantaba una de sus canciones, se trata de Devil May Cry y pues, como el tema musical pertenecía a mi grupo de rock favorito Evanescence, sí o sí tenía que darle una oportunidad y aún mejor, prioridad.

I was recently recommended to watch an anime series that captivated me because of who sang one of its songs, it's Devil May Cry, and well, since the theme song belonged to my favorite rock group, Evanescence, I absolutely had to give it a chance, and even better, a priority.

De entrada te digo que es una obra maestra, al menos esta versión del año 2025. Lamentablemente no he visto las temporadas anteriores, pero luego de ver esta, definitivamente me pondré al día con las demás esperando su segunda temporada, con esta especie de conejo salido del País de las Maravillas.

I'll tell you right off the bat that it's a masterpiece, at least this 2025 version. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the previous seasons, but after watching this one, I'll definitely catch up on the others, eagerly awaiting the second season, with this sort of rabbit straight out of Wonderland.

El personaje de Dante al inicio me pareció algo extravagante y me hubiera gustado que lo hubieran hecho un poco más serio, pero conforme pasaban los capítulos, pues me cautivó el protagonista a tal punto de robarme el corazón.

At first, I found Dante's character somewhat eccentric, and I would have liked them to make him a little more serious, but as the chapters went by, the protagonist captivated me to the point of stealing my heart.

Al parecer me enamoro fácilmente de personajes ficticios y Dante no escapó de ello. Su extravagancia y querer vivir su vida siempre al límite cazando demonios hicieron que lo amara cada vez más.

I seem to fall in love with fictional characters easily, and Dante was no exception. His eccentricity and desire to live life on the edge, hunting demons, made me love him more and more.

Esto porque se preocupaba por el bienestar de los demás a tal punto de poner su vida en riesgo hasta que sucedió algo increíble con él y quedé con la boca abierta en pleno episodio. Esto me atrapó aún más en la trama y me hizo querer terminarla de ver el mismo día.

This is because he cared so much for the well-being of others that he risked his own life, until something incredible happened to him that left me speechless during the episode. This drew me even further into the story and made me want to finish watching it that same day.

El toque extra entre la relación que desarrollaron por muy poco con Dante y con Mary estuvo espectacular, fue una de las cosas que más me gustó. Se nota que tienen química y no sólo por odio puro, sino que se vislumbra algo más entre ellos.

The extra touch in the relationship they barely developed with Dante and with Mary was spectacular; it was one of the things I liked most. You can tell they have chemistry, and not just out of pure hatred, but you can see something more between them.

También me agradó el hecho de que ambos personajes tuvieran infancias difíciles. Bueno, no sólo los protagonistas sino también el villano de esta increíble serie.

I also appreciated that both characters had difficult childhoods. Well, not just the protagonists, but also the villain of this amazing series.

Ver cómo capítulo tras capítulo trae sorpresas conforme avanza la serie, es uno de los aspectos más fuertes, a mi parecer, que gustaron al público, o mejor dicho, a sus fans.

Seeing how each chapter brings surprises as the series progresses is one of the strongest aspects, in my opinion, that appealed to the public, or rather, to its fans.

La banda sonora elegida en cada escena de cada capítulo no puede dejarse de nombrar ya que resaltó por sí sola como si fuera un personaje principal. Uff, esto también le dio un toque único y con clase porque cada canción me trasladó a mi adolescencia.

The soundtrack chosen for each scene of each episode deserves special mention; it stood out almost as if it were a main character. Wow, it also gave it a unique and classy touch because every song transported me back to my teenage years.

Además que cada canción iba acorde a los movimientos de cada personaje y no sólo eso, iba acorde a la escena que se desarrollaba, es decir, la letra de la canción describía como anillo al dedo la situación en sí. Era fascinante de ver y escuchar.

Furthermore, each song perfectly matched the movements of each character, and not only that, but it also perfectly complemented the scene unfolding; in other words, the lyrics of the song described the situation like a glove. It was fascinating to watch and listen to.

En conclusión, Devil May Cry del año 2025 tiene tanto potencial que me invita a verla de nuevo y más aún a querer buscar sus primeras versiones para ser parte de la gran cantidad de fans que tiene esta serie a nivel mundial. De mi parte le otorgo sus 5 estrellas completas.

Normalmente los domingos son días para ver películas con Luna pero este no fue de esos particulares domingos ya que ella pasó el día con sus abuelos paternos y no está mal, para nosotros, los padres, son como unas mini vacaciones ja ja ja nunca pensé que ser padre fuera tan demandante ja ja ja... Teníamos una deuda con los Oscar y ver algunas de de la películas que fueron galardonadas y que nosotros no habíamos visto.

Sundays are usually movie days with Luna, but this wasn’t one of those Sundays she spent the day with her paternal grandparents. And that’s not a bad thing; for us parents, it’s like a mini-vacation, ha ha ha. I never thought being a parent would be so demanding, ha ha ha… We owed it to the Oscars to watch some of the award-winning films we hadn’t seen yet.

En este caso hablo de Sinners así que desde mi punto de vista la película es bastante estructural y divaga mucho en la primera mitad de hecho, no me pareció desde el principio nada atractiva la película pero quise seguir adelante pues en ocasiones luego de la mitad de la película suele haber un giro que me sorprende. La trama nos deja un solo escenario de un solo día lo que empezando desde allí, la película realmente limita su ambición pero ojo, esta es solo mi opinión recuerden que no soy experto en la materia cinematográfica soy solo un amante más al cine

In this case, I’m talking about Sinners, so from my perspective, the film is quite disjointed and rambles a lot in the first half. La película indaga entre ideas profundas, la identidad negra, la liberación espiritual y el vampirismo cultural pero ninguna de ellas termina de cuajar para mí. Y bueno, esto último fue lo que me arrebató la opinión de que me gustara pues soy anti película de vampiros la verdad es que no me agradan y acá, no hay una diferencia a lo que ya conocemos de ellos. La estaca en el corazón o el famoso collar de ajos aun así, críticos y fans parecen estar excusando estos problemas para quedar bien en el momento. Si, algo muy similar a lo que pasó con Black Panther. Y no me malinterpreten, entiendo el impacto cultural y por qué está pasando. Lo impresionante es saber desde que vi el premio Óscar que está película tuvo un éxito de taquilla lo cual fue mucho más de lo que imaginaban todo el equipo de producción aún a pesar de contar con grandes actores y en su mayoría actores de color. The film explores profound ideas Black identity, spiritual liberation, and cultural vampirism but none of them quite click for me. And well, that last point is what ultimately made me change my mind about liking it, since I’m not a fan of vampire movies; the truth is, I don’t care for them, and here, there’s nothing new compared to what we already know about them. The stake through the heart or the famous garlic necklace even so, critics and fans seem to be overlooking these issues just to look good right now. Yes, it’s very similar to what happened with Black Panther. And don’t get me wrong, I understand the cultural impact and why this is happening. What’s impressive is knowing, ever since I saw the Oscar, that this movie was a box office hit which was far more than the entire production team imagined, even despite having great actors, most of whom are actors of color. Mind you, I repeat, don’t get me wrong I have nothing against that, and I greatly respect Coogler’s drive, especially after securing the film’s rights for the future.

Jordan fue quien levantó el Óscar como mejor actor principal y sabiendo eso, fue que teníamos que ver Sinners pero aquí va mi decisión final sobre la película y la actuación del ganador del Óscar. La película está sobrevalorada no me parece algo que nos deje esa sensación de extraordinario y segundo y no menos importante, no me parece una gran actuación del actor aun cuando el mismo interpreta dos personas creo que he visto mejores actuaciones del actor. Anyway, actor Michael B. Jordan was the one who took home the Oscar for Best Actor, and knowing that, we just had to watch Sinners. But here’s my final verdict on the movie and the Oscar winner’s performance. The movie is overrated; it doesn’t leave me with that sense of something extraordinary. And second, but no less important, I don’t think the actor’s performance was that great even though he plays two characters. I’ve seen better performances from him. So, well, you can accept my opinion, and I can understand yours. If you’ve already seen it, I’d like to know what you think. Personally, I prefer Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another.

Television Review: Silver Spoon (Mazhor, Season 1, 2014)

In the golden age of television, given hyperproduction and until recently an unimaginably wide selection of content, it is increasingly difficult to find a police series that does not evoke a sort of "déjà vu". That does not mean the authors of the genre aren't trying. In that regard, lately few have gone as far as the creators of Mazhor, a Russian TV series whose title is best translated as "Golden Boy". The series, which began in 2014 and whose initial plot in its idea is closer to parody or a Latin American telenovela, has managed to reach four seasons, three standalone feature films and South Korean remake Flex X Cop. That success has even reached Netflix, which has offered the series to an international audience under the English title "Silver Spoon".

The titular protagonist is Igor Vladimirovich Sokolovsky (Pavel Priluchny), a young member of Moscow's "golden youth" whose life revolves almost entirely around nightlife and who has absolutely no financial or other worries. However, his father, the influential oligarch Vladimir Yakovlevich Sokolovsky (Alexander Dyachenko), is increasingly dissatisfied with his son's lifestyle, and that dissatisfaction culminates when Igor, during a night-time race of furious cars, clashes with two policemen. The incident represents the last straw, and the father decides to teach his son a lesson, using a previously obtained law degree diploma. Igor is given an ultimatum – he must join the police and serve a year as a detective, otherwise he will be disinherited. Igor rather reluctantly agrees, and his suspicions that it might not be the best idea are confirmed when upon arriving at the station he discovers that his colleagues – Lieutenant Danila "Danya" Korolyov (Denis Shvedov) and Lieutenant Yevgeny "Zhenya" Oblasov (Alexander Oblasov) – are precisely the two policemen he had clashed with. A deep enmity immediately arises between them, which will be further fuelled by the fact that Korolyov is in a romantic relationship with Captain Viktoria "Vika" Radionova (Karina Razumovskaya) and becomes pathologically jealous of the young man accustomed to solving all problems by reaching into his seemingly bottomless wallet. The investigative team, however, eventually does begin to do its proper work and Igor, over time, partly out of defiance, partly out of an effort to prove himself to his father, begins to turn into a more or less efficient policeman. His professional experience also prompts him to start investigating the death of his mother who, in the 1990s while he was a child, perished under suspicious circumstances linked to his father's shady dealings.

Screenwriter Alexander Shcherbakov requires a considerable suspension of disbelief from the viewer, not only because there are rare cases in the real world where rich and influential fathers would try to discipline their profligate sons by shoving them into police offices. The amount of coincidence needed to create complications for the protagonist, which he tries to solve, usually with not the most impressive results, is such that the viewer will very quickly get the impression of watching an episode of a soap opera that the authors are trying to deliberately prolong with ever more bizarre subplots and new characters. That impression, admittedly, is partially offset by the narrative structure which combines individual criminal cases solved per episode with the main plot. That is also an opportunity for Shcherbakov to show some creativity in certain cases, creating one-off but in some instances quite memorable villains. The basic plot, however, develops in a way that seriously compromises the fundamental concept, turning the protagonist's father, who should be some kind of capable and cunning "player", into someone who neglected an important detail in the plan to discipline Igor. All this ultimately leads to a desperately melodramatic and rather predictable finale which, of course, comes in the form of an irritating cliffhanger.

That does not mean everything in Silver Spoon is bad. The direction by Konstantin Statsky skilfully overcomes budget limitations and creates a strong contrast between the world of the wealthy to which his protagonist belongs and the world of ordinary mortals like his colleagues. The acting is relatively good, even when it comes to thankless roles like that of the protagonist. Pavel Priluchny tries to give a convincing transformation from an arrogant spoiled brat to a more or less efficient policeman, although the screenwriter, who made his character largely unsympathetic, has created serious and often insurmountable obstacles in that regard. The same is true of Denis Shvedov as his rival, while Alexander Oblasov was unable to utilise the potential of his character, obviously conceived as a sort of comic relief. The only character viewers might truly sympathise with is Vika, but the performance of Karina Razumovskaya, who approaches it with deadly seriousness without almost ever smiling on screen, only emphasises the fundamental problem of Silver Spoon. The series had an original idea, but poor execution, or rather authors who were afraid that using humour would make the audience not take them seriously.

There is a certain type of movie that sits on your watch list for months because the window to care about it has technically passed, the awards conversation moved on, people online stopped bringing it up, and now it just stares at you from the queue like unfinished homework you keep rescheduling, and The Secret Agent was exactly that for me, something I kept meaning to get to and never did until one random weekend, this past weekend when I ran out of excuses and just hit play. Almost three hours of subtitled Brazilian political drama from the seventies is not the kind of thing you reach for casually, yeah I like to watch movies on their "default" language for the experience, dont like dubs, and the runtime alone had been scaring me off since this thing first showed up on my radar, but late is better than never and it turns out this one absolutely holds up outside of the hype cycle that surrounded it when it first dropped, a great watch any day of the year. Director Kleber Mendonca Filho drops you into 1970s Recife during Carnival season with zero warm up, no comfort zone, no gentle hand holding about what kind of movie you are about to spend your night watching, just a man named Armando living under a fake identity called Marcelo while the military dictatorship that runs Brazil is actively hunting down anyone who ever had an independent thought and treated it like a personal offense to the state. The contrast between the street celebrations outside and the suffocating paranoia underneath everything is something the movie sets up fast and you can really feel the pressure, and that friction between public joy and private terror is where The Secret Agent finds its best moments.

Wagner Moura runs this entire show almost like every other production he is in and the man does not put a single foot wrong across two hours and forty minutes of screen time, because what he is doing as Marcelo is performing constant internal calculation in front of you without ever letting it tip into something theatrical or showy, this is a total master class of acting, every person who crosses his path is a threat, every casual sentence is a performance he cannot afford to slip on for even half a second, Moura makes all of that invisible math feel completely palpable on his face without once over explaining things. The movie almost gives me this feeling where I can watch him get worn down across the runtime in real time, the man has some weight on his back carrying a false identity while also trying to protect a young son growing up without his mother does something to a person, and Moura lets that show up during the movie specially in the way he carries himself differently in the final part of it than he did at the start, which is the kind of committed work that separates people who are acting from people who are actually living something on camera, its that kind of movie when the man is constantly in role even when the camera is not recording, watching him doing the movie must be a great expirience. Tania Maria does a really good job as the woman running the place Marcelo ends up at. She is only in the movie for a bit, but she leaves an impression because you are never fully sure what she knows or what she is keeping to herself. That mystery gives her scenes this steady uneasy vibe. Udo Kier also shows up in what became his final film role, and even with limited screen time he has that same strange presence he always had. He makes every scene feel just a little more off, like trouble is there even before anything actually happens.

Now here is where I have to be straight with you because The Secret Agent is not a perfect movie and pretending otherwise would basically be lying but my rating stands firm, its the pacing that does something that drove me a little crazy, it moves at a deliberate crawl for extended periods of time during the movie and then suddenly rushes through things that probably needed more room to breathe, and that drastic change in pace is noticeable enough and becomes annoying when you have committed this much of your time to it, the truth is that now days each movie you watch is a time investment once past the 2 hour mark. Kleber Mendonca Filho plays with time in a way that keeps bouncing between past events and a future thread running parallel, and while I respect the ambition of that structure that often work pretty well, I am a fan of time jumps since they provide so much context, but there were moments where I could not figure out what certain scenes were adding to the bigger picture of the story but for the most part it was creating confusion. The surreal stuff was the other big thing that kept taking me out of the movie and honestly made me want to fast forward. You have this solid, tense political thriller moving along just fine, and then suddenly sharks and weird body imagery start showing up like the movie is trying to turn into some kind of fever dream. I get the idea behind it, its clearly trying to show how living under a dictatorship can mess with your mind in a way that feels almost like horror, but for me it didnt work that well and it was more confusing than effective.

Honestly, cut about twenty minutes from this movie and it probably becomes a much sharper, stronger film without losing any of its political impact.

I was a little disappointed that I still did not fully understand a lot of the characters motivations, because the script keeps so much close and what I mean with this is that some characters I felt were not given more time to be build and fully integrate. You end up having to fill in too many blanks yourself, especially with the resistance stuff and the spy angle. The secret messages and coded letters also feel more confusing than clever, which is frustrating because the emotional core of the father and son story is actually really strong. At the same time, I do like that the movie is set in this specific period, because it gives it a heavier atmosphere. It shows how an entire society can be living in fear while pretending everything is normal, and that idea really works, seeing people act like daily life is fine while others are getting taken off the streets is genuinely disturbing. It also looks like a movie that had real effort behind it. The sets, costumes, and locations all feel carefully done, and Recife especially stands out. It looks beautiful, but in a way that also feels trapping, like Armando is stuck in a place he can never really get away from.

At the end everything tries to come together but after all that slow deliberate buildup the climax moves at a pace that gave me whiplash because it felt rushed towards the end, and I walk out my living room with roughly thirty percent of the character motivations still unclear, which is going to feel either like a bold artistic choice or an incomplete job depending entirely on your personal tolerance for ambiguity in a movie that already asked this much of your time, I feel like watching this again to fully get all those other questions answer or rather watch a detail recap, not too sure about it, besides I didnt want to spoil the events because this is those kind of stories that you just cant point out to a single event since every moment is interconnected and important. This is not a movie for everyone and I mean that without judgment, not saying is a bad movie specially considering how much I love the flashbacks for context, that is an aspect of any movie or tv series that I love. If you need clean answers and a satisfying ending after a movie this long then The Secret Agent is going to push back hard and probably not for you, and I can see pople saying the movie was boring. Wagner Moura alone is worth the commitment though, and the core story of a man trying to keep his kid safe while the whole country is working against him carries enough real weight to get you through every scene where the script gets too smart for its own good, most importantly because we have and we are seen this type of situation in the world we living in, its on the news and social media every day and the world will keep on spinning. I am giving it an 8 out of 10 because this is dope cinema that earns its awards attention through pure craft and performance, even when Kleber Filho occasionally gets in his own way reaching for more than the movie actually needs to be. If you are going to give this movie a try then I would advice to clear your schedule, get your snacks ready before you sit down and do not even think about half watching this one because the second you look away it will leave you completely behind.

Project Hail Mary - Alien friendship instead of an alien threat
Science fiction cinema often generates big ideas but struggles to strike a balance between those ideas and human stories. While it’s fair to say that capturing emotion is quite difficult in most sci-fi films, I can say the exact opposite about Project Hail Mary. I’d say it was one of those rare productions that managed to blend these two elements almost flawlessly.

The story’s central themes are loneliness and hope. The story begins with a man waking up on a spaceship having lost his memory. This man, Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), is actually humanity’s last hope. He was sent to stop a mysterious organism causing the sun to go out.

But at this point, the film doesn’t fall into the trap of trying to create a classic hero. The primary and central focus shifts to how a person must cope with loneliness. The film emphasizes that science is not just a solution but also a means of understanding. And most importantly, it explores how to form a connection with a stranger with whom you share no common bond. This last point is significant because the film’s strongest element is Grace’s unexpected friendship. And the way this friendship is gradually revealed to the audience.

It’s safe to say that the film’s true surprise and most unforgettable character is Rocky, and I believe this is a choice that will be widely accepted by everyone. I won’t give away too many clues about the character, but I can say that simply noting he isn’t human and emphasizing that the film must be watched is sufficient. Rocky single handedly breaks the molds of the sci-fi genre. Because instead of an alien threat, it creates an alien friendship.

I’d say Ryan Gosling took quite a risk in this film compared to his other works. He’s alone for most of the movie, and that could have been a serious challenge from an acting standpoint. He successfully brought to life a character who is intelligent yet helpless, hopeful yet fragile.

The interior of the spaceship, chosen as the setting, successfully conveyed a sense of reality and atmosphere throughout the film. The scientific details were strong. Even though you know the film is entirely fictional, the fact that some elements are grounded in science instills a sense of reality in the viewer’s mind.

What if something like this really happened? What would humanity do in the face of such an extinction crisis? It was possible to be engrossed in such questions throughout the film. In my opinion, the film’s greatest strength was its ability to tell a story one that could be considered a major achievement in the sci-fi genre from a human perspective. Though, one must ask, are we, as humans, really that friendly?

If you enjoy stories about survival through science, Project Hail Mary will appeal to you. I can also say it’s an emotionally distinct production that prompts the viewer to think more deeply. It also carries the lesson that help can come from an unexpected place at an unexpected time.
