Paradise (2025) is a series I wanted to cover on an episode by episode although irl stuff got into the way and I'm still processing everything that happened in those eight episodes, after all the series that look like a very average attempt end up been great. Created by Dan Fogelman the mastermind behind great productions like Cars and This Is Us, this TV series manages to deliver the emotional punches I was expecting from it along with a ton of action, what is a TV series or movie without making you react to it. The series stars Sterling K. Brown playing the role of Xavier Collins, a Secret Service agent whose world gets turned upside down when he finds President Cal Bradford; played by James Marsden dead in his bedroom. This is the startup of a huge twist for the story, turning into an investigation that reveals the multiple layers of conspiracy in what initially appears to be the perfect community of survivors. I gave this first season a solid 7.5/10, it's not perfect but it's definitely worth watching, especially if you enjoy political thrillers with sci fi elements and strong performances. The show sets itself up beautifully with a deliberate pace that doesn't rush to reveal too much too soon, first episodes in fact were a bit draggy, offering just enough breadcrumbs to keep you interested until things start to speed up drastically and changes everything you thought you knew about the world of Paradise.

What makes Paradise stand out from other political thrillers is its unique setting of an underground city and the gradual way information is revealed to both the characters and the audience, it's this mix of sci fi aspects and enclose environment that includes the murder of a big figure within the plot. The show uses flashbacks to provide context and backstory almost through the first half constantly, showing us how this underground community came to be and the relationships between characters before the disaster. We learn that the bunker was created by Samantha aka Sinatra played by Julianne Nicholson, the world's richest self made woman who lost her child before the apocalypse and had to nose dive into her career to get over her grief over time creating a survival plan based more on control than empathy. There was always this conflict for power between Sinatra and President Bradford and this aspect becomes a central element for the story, with Bradford portrayed as a puppet President who eventually starts questioning the system they've created, that he let them create.

The cast is strong or at least the main characters; because there are a few like most of the kids who are very average, but its Sterling K. Brown who delivers a performance that made me look him up and realize how good he is but really stays off radar, I hope he gets a big part on the big screen to show off more of his talent, on Paradise he shows his ability to deal with complex emotions with just his facial expression either his eyes or mouth that makes Xavier a character you can't look away and indirectly kept eyes lock down on him. James Marsden brings charm and deep sadness to President Cal Bradford, making him more than just a typical politician, while Julianne Nicholson as Sinatra is a great villain but turn out to be a fool at the end, she is both evil and quietly commanding and driven by her own twisted logic. The supporting cast is equally strong, particularly Jon Beavers as Billy Pace, Xavier's trusted friend whose murder midway through the season increasing the drama as someone is trying to cover their tracks and Nicole Brydon Bloom as Jane Driscoll, who reveals herself to be far more dangerous than cute as she might look.

The season finale episode "The Man Who Kept the Secrets" brings many of the season's story lines together while keeping the door open for a second season, this series reminds me to Shogun at FX, not that its as good but turn out better than many expected so season two is a must. Xavier now has some clues and knowledge; I still doubt it, that his wife is alive, the ending also shows how he follows clues left by the deceased President that lead him to the town library, he discovers information that could help him find his wife and other survivors, but before he can act, he's knocked unconscious, when he wakes up, he finds himself face to face with Trent, the town librarian, who confesses to killing President Bradford and an entire new story line is build just within the last two episodes, it felt great because even though the season was ending, the story kept giving more and more to the audience entertainment.

Meanwhile, Jane's story line takes a fascinating turn, after kidnapping Presley on Sinatra's orders, Jane is kinda tested by Sinatra to figure out if the times comes, does Jane have it in her to kill Presley. Instead of killing Presley, Jane betrays Sinatra over a Wii, shooting her when Xavier has his gun to the her head. At first this seems like Jane might have had a change of heart, but her chilling message to Sinatra that she is willing to follow orders but don't take her for a fool and better get her what she wants, this comes back to the moment Jane asks Sinatra to get her the Nintendo Wii she use to play with Billy, which Sinatra refused to give her, assuming it was a stupid request. This shows Jane to be not just a pawn but a true psychopath who values her own desires, no matter how small, over human life.

Anora (2024) is such a ridiculous cliche movie but in the good way, yes its 1000% predictable for the most part but it does throw you some curve balls, even without knowing who Ivan is, exactly who his parents were or why he is in Brooklyn we already know some of the possible outcomes, even if we take it from an adult stand point of view. Guy goes into a stripper club and becomes very close to an specific girl, yeah probably because she speaks some Russian as Ivan English was rough around the edges but still we know the ending before happens when he starts to throw money around, either one of them will ""fall in love"". Its a wild ride of raw energy with a bold storytelling of Ani, a New York City stripper who is entangled in a wild situation after getting marry with the son of a Russian oligarch.

Eventually things do keep the same course and they fall into the idea of getting married, an idea that Ivan push with hidden reasons he only knew about at first, it was his intention to get a green card so he could stay in USA, probably escape to some place he could not be found all because he didn't want to return to Russia but also had no saying on his life to take this decision, this is why Ivan’s family sends out Toros; role played by Karren Karagulian, who was Ivan's godfather. He is not alone because Ivan’s father knew him too well and he would not come back that easy so they send out two of their bodyguards, Igor played by Yura Borisov and Garnick played by Vache Tovmasyan to set things right. They spend quite some time looking for Ivan who ran away across the New York City, the movie now turns into a mix and weird comedy between social commentary of how money and class differences can get in the middle of any relationship, facts.

Recently been sharing more movies with my wife, she is the type who likes all romance and full of feeling movies, so A Real Pain fits perfectly for her likes. The movie for me was more like a comedy as I'm not that sensible to the bonding scenes that happen constantly, the love and hate relationship that made my wife drop a few tears, not really me but I do get the message, got to recognize its a great movie when it comes to drama and comedy, we both ended satisfied considering there might be part of the audience that end up confused since the main two characters were a big contrast of personality. The movie is directed by Jesse Eisenberg himself, mostly I allways remember him from The Social Network and Justice League. The movie develops in Poland with two mismatched cousins, two wildly different person, the perfect mix for chaos and disaster as their past starts to emerge including all their differences on a tour through Poland in the memory of their grandmother, its here where Benji; role played by Kieran Culkin, becomes the center of attention leaving on his shadow his cousin David Kaplan; role played by Jesse Eisenberg, until feelings start to explode like a volcano and they start to bond.

After their grandmother's death, David and Benji became more curious about their family history and thought would be a good idea to visit where she lived before WWII. David character fits so well for Jesse, as always this man has a talent to been weird and awkward, the typical anxious guy, married now with kids who can't wait to get back home always thinking about what is or may happen while he is not around. Benji on the other side it a total different type of person, still living with his mom and he is always the center for conversation.

There is no doubt that Kieran stole the show and owns this movie, I doubt Jesse might be mad about it as he is the director too, besides I'm sure its meant to be that way. As the movie develops its that same chaotic energy that start showing Benji emotions and feelings, making him feel real and even relatable to some people. Eisenberg is more of the safe play for the movie that just works because it perfectly balance Benji.

Mayor Fisk, yes he got elected, begins implementing his anti vigilante agenda while maintaining his criminal connections through intimidation and blackmail, there he is a moment he shows up talking to his wife on how he would step out and want to do things right but he doesn't know right, showing that despite his new public image, he remains the Kingpin at heart. Hector and Fisk connect too not only because Fisk is against vigilantes but also because Hector "killed" a cop how now Fisk has to someone support and on top Matt ends up been Hector lawyer after been at the police station at the right time when cops were trying to squeeze Hector, everything everything on the series is connected.

El pasado mes de enero se estrenó "Wolf Man", primer film del año producido por "Blumhouse Productions" que trae nuevamente a la gran pantalla la famosa historia de terror sobre El Hombre Lobo; enfocado en esta oportunidad en una época actual en dónde un padre de familia, "Blake Lovell", deberá regresar específicamente a la zona boscosa de Oregón, para visitar la cabaña en dónde vivió en su juventud con su padre que para ese momento se encuentra desaparecido y dado por muerto; Blake junto a su esposa y pequeña hija deciden realizar un viaje familiar que se convertirá en una experiencia terrorífica cuando deban enfrentar una leyenda mortal que reside en el bosque y que está dispuesta a atacar a quien sea. 

Last January was released "Wolf Man", the first film of the year produced by "Blumhouse Productions" that brings back to the big screen the famous horror story about The Wolf Man; focused in this opportunity in a current time where a family father, "Blake Lovell", must return specifically to the wooded area of Oregon, to visit the cabin where he lived in his youth with his father who by that time is missing and presumed dead; Blake and his wife and young daughter decide to take a family trip that will become a terrifying experience when they must face a deadly legend that resides in the forest and is ready to attack anyone.

Leigh Whannell fue el elegido para dirigir y co escribir el guion de esta nueva película basada en un "Clásico Monstruo"; está es la segunda vez que este director es parte de un remake sobre alguno de estos personajes, ya que en el 2020 dirigió y escribió el film "The Invisible Man", una excelente producción que une muy bien el terror y la ciencia ficción lo cual actualizó a esa gran historia; posiblemente eso facilitó la decisión de traerlo para liderar este proyecto, aunque la realidad es que su elección fue debido a que el director Derek Cianfrance abandonó dicho film. Personalmente, creo que este es el trabajo menos convincente de Whannell; este es un film con un ritmo muy acelerado, con una adecuada dirección con respecto al suspenso y tensión en ciertas escenas de los cortos dos primeros actos, pero al momento de adentrar en el extenso tercer y final acto, creo que las revelaciones de la criatura y la poca tensión, hace que el impacto no sea el mejor lo cual creó que lo predecible de la historia, también afecta al desarrollo de muchas escenas. 

El guion es muy simple aunque me gustó que exista el respeto a la base de estas historias, primeramente el suspenso de la criatura, la obsesión del hombre por descubrir y atrapar a lo desconocido así se ponga en peligro la vida propia y la de otros, la relación de padre e hijo, así como el interés amoroso lo cual siempre he creído que es importante para que exista la disyuntiva entre lo animal y lo humano; otro tema que me pareció adecuado es que exista una explicación o referencia sobre lo que sucederá en la historia, esto es algo que mayoritariamente no aprecio mucho, pero está vez no tuve ningún problema y hasta puedo decir que me hizo recordar alguna que otra película de M. Night Shyamalan en dónde cualquier información puede ayudar o engañar al espectador; lo que no le gustó del guion es lo poco dramático de la historia, como dije anteriormente, sus dos primeros actos aunque ponen en contexto la vida del protagonista, la realidad es que no existe ninguna conexión o química entre los personajes y eso afecta mucho al desarrollo del film.

Leigh Whannell was chosen to direct and co-write the script of this new movie based on a "Classic Monster"; this is the second time that this director is part of a remake about one of these characters, since in 2020 he directed and wrote the film "The Invisible Man", an excellent production that unites very well horror and science fiction which updated that great story; possibly that facilitated the decision to bring him to lead this project, although the reality is that his choice was due to the fact that the director Derek Cianfrance abandoned that film. Personally, I think this is Whannell's least compelling work; this is a very fast paced film, with adequate direction with respect to suspense and tension in certain scenes of the short first two acts, but as we get into the extended third and final act, I think the creature revelations and little tension, makes the impact not the best which created that the predictability of the story, also affects the development of many scenes. 

The script is very simple although I liked that there is respect for the basis of these stories, first of all the suspense of the creature, the obsession of man to discover and catch the unknown even if it endangers his own life and the lives of others, the relationship between father and son, as well as the love interest which I have always believed is important for there to be a dilemma between the animal and the human; another issue that I thought was appropriate is that there is an explanation or reference to what will happen in the story, this is something that mostly I do not appreciate much, but this time I had no problem and I can even say that it reminded me of some other movie of M. Night Shyamalan where any information can help or deceive the viewer; what I didn't like about the script is the lack of drama in the story, as I said before, its first two acts although they put in context the life of the main character, the reality is that there is no connection or chemistry between the characters and that affects a lot the development of the film.

Lógicamente, está es una película sobre transformaciones o cambios radicales,.en eso cada actor debe interpretar una versión de su personaje que en el principio está dentro de una zona de confort en dónde no se está para nada cómodo y que al momento de necesitar un cambio, eso es lo que genera la parte final del film; en eso sus protagonistas hacen lo necesario para poder ser relevantes en la historia y justamente creo que la única que alcanza ese cometido es Julia Garner como "Charlotte", quien es la esposa del Blake y que está netamente enfocada en su trabajo, pero decide tener un tiempo con su esposo e hija lo cual la llevara a convertirse en algo que ella pensaba que nunca podía lograr; no dire que su actuación es magistral, pero es ella quien lidera el extenso final lo cual me entretuvo y considero como un punto positivo de la película.

Logically, this is a film about transformations or radical changes. in that each actor must play a version of his character that at the beginning is in a comfort zone where he is not at all comfortable and when he needs a change, that is what generates the final part of the film; In that its protagonists do what is necessary to be relevant in the story and I think the only one who achieves that task is Julia Garner**_ as "Charlotte", who is Blake's wife and who is purely focused on her work, but decides to have some time with her husband and daughter which will lead her to become something she thought she could never achieve; I will not say that her performance is masterful, but it is she who leads the extensive final which entertained me and I consider as a positive point of the film.

Wolf Man es un film regular, es el típico film con un potencial enorme desde su historia con respecto a los que es un drama familiar que usa (posiblemente) la maldición del Hombre Lobo para narrar el hecho en dónde los pecados del padre, se transmitan a los hijos y en este caso, como en otros films basados en este personaje, la relación padre e hijo es importante y me hubiera gustado que ese drama en la historia se hiciera más presente lo cual se desarrolla mejor en el final cerrando de una mejor manera este film. A pesar de lo antes dicho y lo poco satisfactorio que me pareció la película, de igual manera me entretuvo, pero al final es otro film más de Blumhouse en donde parece que no existiera una necesidad de crear un producto de calidad, sino un producto para generar cierta cantidad de dinero y nada más.

Wolf Man is a regular film, it is the typical film with a huge potential from its story with respect to what is a family drama that uses (possibly) the curse of the Wolf Man to narrate the fact where the sins of the father, are transmitted to the children and in this case, as in other films based on this character, the father and son relationship is important and I would have liked that this drama in the story was more present which is better developed in the end closing in a better way this film. Despite what I said before and how unsatisfying I found the film, I was still entertained, but in the end it is just another Blumhouse film where it seems that there was no need to create a quality product, but a product to generate a certain amount of money and nothing more.

Extraction 2 was first for me, back then in 2020 I was starting to get into movies but Extraction (2020) didn't appear on my radar, after watching the sequel then realize there was a first movie and didn't make time to watch it until a couple of days ago. Since the sequel was very good in my opinion I was very excited to check it out, especially with Chris Hemsworth in the lead and the Russo brothers producing, I can tell back then the movie was not going to win any awards and was just perfect to stay on the streaming catalog so it can shine bright on the platform still today.

The kid Tyler has to rescue is called Ovi, the son of an imprisoned Indian crime lord. Tyler gets hired for the extraction job and things go wrong almost immediately as right after successfully grabbing the kid he discovers he has been double crossed and all of the sudden every corrupt cop and gangster in Dhaka is hunting them down. Its here were when a non stop chase through the crowded city as Tyler tries to keep Ovi alive while fighting off all kind of attackers. This job has a hidden meaning for Tyler as the story slowly tells us why he keeps dragging his life around with a dead wish at every job he takes, he lacks meaning and purpose after he lost his son to illness years ago, having to protect Ovi creates an attachment to the kid. Within all the men hunting them down there is a special story next to it involving a man called Saju, who actually works for Ovi's father and is force to go after Tyler and Ovi to protect his own family, he is been blackmail but eventually Saju and Tyler team up to go after their enemies. There is nothing particularly special about the story, we have seen this before but the cast did a great job, also the crowded city at times feels very claustrophobic making the chase and shooting very intense.

The kid who plays Ovi; actor Rudhraksh Jaiswal, does a solid job holding his own alongside Hemsworth. Their relationship forms the emotional bond of the movie and Jaiswal makes Ovi more than just a plot device as it is mos of the time with the person been rescue after a kidnap. Randeep Hooda plays the role of Saju, who also standout, bringing a more complex reason to his character because of the decisions he has to make during the movie to switch sides back and forward to what could have been a one dimensional antagonist. His motivations are clear, he is a man just trying to save his own family, which makes his conflict with Tyler more interesting than your typical hired hitman, in this case blackmail. The villains on the movie are not that much develop as I would wanted, including drug lord Amir played by Priyanshu Painyuli, aren't given much detail and screen time, but they serve their purpose in the story.

Going a bit further, Netflix has also announced an Extraction TV series, this is where things can go south since I doubt they will get Chris Hemsworth to play Tyler for an entire TV Series, changing the main character and just using the name of the movies doesn't work very often. The series would feature Omar Sy; mostly known for Lupin on Netflix, he also play a mercenary on a mission in Libya, the Russo brothers are involve on this project but probably just to make sure the essence of the movies remain through the series.

Biopics are extremely hard to pull off, obviously those characters in life that ever get a Biopic made out of their life have a lot to tell making it hard for the production to perform as good as the audience would be expecting. Maria (2024) directed by Pablo Larrain in my opinion is one of the best biopic I have seen very recent, I want to say that I might a bit bias towards this movie since I love Angelina Jolie and to me it is only destiny for her or a diva on her level to do this movie.

The movie develops around the legendary opera singer Maria Callas during her final days in 1977, even as a big Angelina Jolie fan I got to say I was satisfied with the movie, lots of emotions but at the same time a bit confused, the movie is both beautiful and frustrating at the same time because of pace and a bit too much drama for my taste.

Her luxurious apartment in Paris at times felt more like an island and a prison, a cage and not home, as Maria goes into isolation. The movie does something very interesting at presenting her flashbacks in black and white while the rest of the movie or present day scenes is in full color, creating this dreamlike effect to separate reality from blurry memories, it even feels like a haunting past, one that was not particular bad but its that same success that hunts her now that she has lost her gift.

The movie shows us how Callas was essentially trapped between two identities, the real Maria and "La Callas," the larger than life diva that the world expected her to be and here is when I think it had to be Angelina playing this role. During the entire movie Maria is struggling with this duality as she tries to regain her voice while dealing with heart problems and a growing dependence on medications, there was no reason to push it as she already had it all and won it all, there was nothing else to do for her proof herself so makes me think if this voice situation was mostly for ego?!

The movie is not straight clear in a few things as it keeps going back and forward between memories that at times even felt like fantasy, but the ending is special when you understand how it all comes together in those final moments. The movie shows Callas's death on September 16, 1977, in her Paris apartment but what makes it powerful is how everything before leads to this point. Throughout the movie we see her struggling with her medications, particularly Mandrax as it is a very powerful drug that can create hallucinations, but it's her acceptance of her fate that really stands out. In her final days she is constantly listening to her old recordings, even though she claims they are too perfect and lack the raw emotion of live performance, eventually she makes peace with her present, legacy and her limitations at the time. When the moment finally comes, she is alone in her apartment which feels right for someone who spent her later years in isolation, even with loyal staff like Ferruccio and Bruna around. The movie doesn't try to make her death dramatic, instead showing it with a quiet dignity that matches how she lived her final days. The movie kept the blend of reality with her imagination right until the end, this is why you are never quite sure if what we are seeing is really happening or if it's just in her mind, especially with those scenes with the young filmmaker who might or might not be real, this might turn frustrating for many viewers, not been sure of whats is real or not but that's the catch or the trick of many movies. Fans or those closer to Maria Callas career could turn mad with this type of biopic instead of your more traditional one, well if that the case they might look for a documentary, movies are meant to be fiction to a certain extend even when they are based on real life events.

Richard spends his time digging up a field looking for some old oak tree root that at first he thought it was a fantasy until latter on figure out had a very dark secret that tormented since his childhood, while Juliette is stuck in this cycle of grief that's making her believe their son might come back. There's this whole thing about an ancient oak tree that used to be in their field and at first Richard only finds this weird rabbit skeleton that starts causing all sorts of strange act of supernatural tricks only while on their property. The movie gets really interesting when we see how differently Richard and Juliette handle their loss, he tries to be all scientific about it until it was either his son last request to find the roots or because he start thinking only a miracle or supernatural even can bring him back that's why I think started to look for this oak roots, while Juliette goes deep into this short term spiritual trip.

The movie does left questions unanswered, the thing about Starve Acre is that it really tries to do something different with the horror genre and that something to be appreciate but I know there are many who might think the movie did work out. The way it shows grief through both realistic and supernatural ping of view is pretty clever, but still feels like there is something missing, I was expecting more horror, if they could elaborate more on Richard's childhood. The atmosphere is spot on with the Yorkshire setting, the 1970s period details and the creepy vibes from that rabbit skeleton all work together to create this unsettling mood. What doesn't work so well is how the movie sometimes loses focus, jumping between the intellectual stuff by Richard, the family drama and the supernatural elements without really putting the pieces together, even the crazy women who said to be some sort of psychic to help Juliette focus.

The ending and a book Richard found from his dad prove that it was not just a tale, the whole thing was real just that for some reason only Richard though about excavating looking for the damn roots, the book he found was a complete tutorial to summon this evil spirit that some how gave them purpose specially Juliette, feels like the Rabbit replace her son and this made Richard feel calm about his wife not descending into darkness anymore but to embrace darkness as part of them. It's one of those endings that doesn't give you clear answers but instead leaves you thinking about what happens next to this couple who were so desperate to have their son back that they might have brought something much worse into their lives.
