The other day while I was looking for something to watch on Netflix I came across a very interesting movie. I don't normally look for animated series or movies but since Netflix offers the option to watch a small preview or fragment of a scene, that allows you to have a bit of context and that's how the plot of this movie attracted me, since in a certain way it reminds me of my deaf/mute nephew and that's what made me have a connection with the story.

Ishida is an elementary school student, mischievous and seemingly limitless, as he begins to bother the new girl in class, a girl who also has hearing problems and therefore cannot communicate as everyone else would, he bothers her and makes fun of her until the girl decides to change schools, however, as time goes by Ishida feels ashamed and tormented by the way he treated his classmate and decides to try to fix his mistake.

Just like I told you, I felt a special connection with this movie from the very beginning because in a certain way I have seen that situation up close, how much it cost my sister to accept the fact that her son was deaf and mute, in fact it broke my heart when she said that she would never be able to hear him call her "Mom" so taking into account that the situation is already quite cruel for the person born with the condition, it is doubly cruel that others bother them for a situation that they cannot control, and in that, parents and teachers, that is, authority figures, play a very important role, they should explain to children that there are people with different conditions and needs in the world, that making them suffer is aberrant. For that reason I like that there are these types of stories that help people put themselves in the victim's shoes since the film offers us several points of view of bullying, in fact there is a very strong scene where Ishida pulls out the girl's earpiece and causes bleeding in her ear, that made me very sad but it is necessary for you to see how cruel an action like that can be.

Therefore, the film shows in a crude and realistic way what the consequences of bullying are and how much it can affect not only the person bullied, but also the bully. It is an abominable practice that undermines people's self-esteem, their confidence, and their relationships with others. Fortunately, Ishida begins to see everything he was doing from a more objective point of view, and that has a great impact on him. I remember that even his mother felt ashamed by the times he destroyed Ishida's hearing aids. But throughout the beginning of the film, we can see how she, tremendously resilient, always responds to aggression with great nobility, offering her unconditional friendship to those who intend to harm her, which speaks to her purity of heart and makes you feel powerless when seeing all the abuse she is subjected to, being such a vulnerable being.

I like that the film handles inclusion in a completely organic way, something that Disney apparently doesn't know how to do, in this way strong social themes are addressed in a realistic context and without resorting to the resource of usurping an already established character, no, this is the story of a deaf girl and she always was, I also like that it also addresses the theme of redemption and the importance of forgiveness in order to heal.

  2. Character Review ~ Shoya Ishida from A Silent Voice – Powerful Transformation@psyberkid345d

Hello everyone, Today I want to discuss one of the most emotional characters I've ever seen that is Shoya Ishida in A Silent Voice movie. It's very human and emotional to see a bully from school days transform into a teenager trying to apologize.

      Character Summary

Shoya first appears as a selfish elementary school student who bullies a deaf girl named Shoko Nishimiya along with his classmates. However, when the school turns against him and Shoko leaves, Shoya is left alone, bullied by others and feels the burden of his own work. Later in high school he is lonely, depressed and can't look people in the eye due to guilt.

Life begins to change him when he meets Shoko again and tries to correct himself. It is the beginning of a painful, emotional and painful process through which we can find redemption. The story is based on Showa trying to mend relationships with others, rekindle friendships and forgive himself.

      My Review

Showa is one of the most realistic and "humanly flawed" anime characters. I really enjoyed how A Silent Voice didn't rush his development and showed his guilt and trauma very clearly. His storyline can make it clear how incredibly difficult it is to change, how long the therapeutic processes can be and how much heroism and support it requires.

His silent and yet vulnerable, strength has influenced me a lot. Showa reminds us that people are capable of change, people can forgive and despite making mistakes, we remain good women or men who are worthy of love and redemption. That's it for today.

Thanks you so much for reading. See you next :)

  3. Anime Review ~A Silent Voice: Directed by Naoko Yamada@seunruth396d

    Directed by Naoko Yamada

If you are going to watch this movie, Prepare tissues, a warm blanket, and an open heart. You’ll need all three. To be sincere sometimes the quietest voices speak the loudest truths.

Still on my journey to get addicted to anime 🤪, after watching Your Name I got interesting in watching more anime.

I came across A Silent Voice, it got me curious, a silent voice? How can a voice be silent? Anyways, my curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to find out what happened in this story.

From the first few minutes, I felt angry and sad. It starts with a boy, Shoya, bullying a girl, Shoko, who is deaf. He and some classmates made fun of a new girl named Shoko Nishimiya — a gentle, deaf girl who tried hard to make friends. But because she was different, she became an easy target.

The sound of their mean laughter, the silence of her reactions — it all made my chest tight. It was uncomfortable, especially to me who hates bullies.

Shoko’s life becomes painful because of the bullying, and eventually, she changes schools (I'd do the same or face them head on, what about you?). But what happens next is unexpected: the blame for the bullying lands mostly on Shoya. Suddenly, he becomes the outcast. His friends turn their backs on him. From that point on, his life becomes quiet and lonely. To me that serves him right.

But as the story moved forward, something changed. We see Shoya again, years later. He's older, alone, full of regret. He walks with his head down. The world around him is quiet because he doesn't have friends anymore.

He even plans to end his life… But something changes inside him. He decides to find Shoko again. To say sorry. To make things right.

That decision becomes the start of a difficult but beautiful journey — of friendship, healing, and forgiveness.

But then… he meets Shoko again.

She’s still soft-spoken. Still kind. Still carrying her own pain. Their journey together is awkward, beautiful, and full of little moments — shaky hands, sad smiles, long silences that speak louder than words.

But will Shoko forgive him? Will she be able to stay in a friendship with someone who tormented her, who caused her pain 😭. Well, that's the hardest part of this movie.

To majority it's easier to forgive than forget, but have you ever vowed never to do the both?

    What happened?

A Silent Voice taught me that people mess up — sometimes in ugly ways. But that doesn’t mean they’re beyond forgiveness.Directed by Naoko Yamada

And maybe most of all — that it’s okay to fall. As long as you choose to stand again. Even with trembling legs. Even with scars.

You know, if you've ever wronged someone there’s still time to make things right.

  4. A Silent Voice (2016) | The Anime That Rewards You For Paying Attention@screenjournal426d

This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews. (All HBD earnings are used to get extra Hive Power Delegations!)

When it comes down to A Silent Voice, it is a movie that I have been wanting to watch for a long time and I had really high expectations. This mainly because I really really liked all the high-rated anime movies that I watched so far. Studio Ghibli is just pure magic with many of those movies just blowing me away from every angle. I also watched Your Name (which is ranked 3rd in anime on IMDB) and also loved that one with the different animation style. So next in line naturally was A Silent Voice which is ranked #5. So I was ready for it on Wednesday evening or at least I though I was. I watched the Japanese spoken version with Dutch Subtitles and really learned that I always should opt for the English dubbed version when it comes down to these movies as I'm just missing too much fully relying on the subtitles. This certainly took a lot away from this movie for me and I actually considered a rewatch today already. I would say this is a movie that rewards you for paying attention and the english version would have allowed me to do this more. I did watch some youtube videos afterward about the movie which certainly helped me appreciate it more.

    A Silent Voice (7.9/10)

Just reading the plotline of this movie I was already kind of sold and ready for an emotional ride. The main topics I would say are personal issues, bullying, redemption, connection, ...

Very ealy in the movie I already got some tears in my eyes having sympathy for the girl and what was going on which really made me like the first part of the movie. The animations from start to finish also were done really well and the music blended in nicely.

However, as the movie moved on to the 2nd part where they were older it kind of started to lose me a bit. This mainly because in the first part I only really paid attention to the 2 main Characters while many of the other school kids who got smaller roles also came back in the 2nd part and for each of them I had no real idea who they were which didn't help.

    Movie Plot (Spoiler Free):

"A deaf girl, Shoko, is bullied by the popular Shoya. As Shoya continues to bully Shoko, the class turns its back on him. Shoko transfers and Shoya grows up as an outcast. Alone and depressed, the regretful Shoya finds Shoko to make amends."

Basically this movie is a lot and there are so many details and nuances that I simply wasn't able to even remotely absorb in the firts viewing. I watched it more casually while I personally don't have that much relatability or depression along with some other topics in this movie. This along with the high expectation kind of left me a bit underwhemed right after finishing the movie.

However, I do fully understand that this movie get such high praise and watching some Youtube videos afterward about it made me appreciate it a lot more already. I do plan to watch it again some day maybe along with my nieces and I'm quite sure that will make me appreciate it a lot more as it will allow me to pay way more attention to the details.

Conclusion While I enjoyed watching A Silent Voice, I not nearly managed to get the most out of it and really need a 2nd viewing preferably with English audio. I now give it a solid 7.9/10 which is a bit higher than my experience right after watching it but likely less than what I potentially would rate it if I watched it again. I do kind of feel that this is a movie that could mean a lot to me if I was able to grasp it more and get all the details that are in it. I would summarize this one as a movie that rewards you the most if you are able to pay very close attention.

  5. A Silent Voice and an emotional scene [ENG/ESP]@ibet445d

    Source

What's up anime loving community? I hope you are doing great and had a nice vacation (if you did). It's quite hard for me to think of a favorite scene involving cherry blossoms (which, in fact, are quite common in anime), but thinking back, there's a scene I really like from A Silent Voice, you know, this super emotional movie loved by many people (including me), which is really beautiful.

    Source

If you don't know what “A Silent Voice” is about, it's about a boy named Shouya Ishida who puts all his affairs in order and then tries to commit suicide while remembering all the events that led to his final decision. In his elementary school days, a new student named Shouko Nishimiya, who is deaf, arrives. Because of her condition, Shouya and her other classmates bullied Shouko in all sorts of ways. Things happen and in the end Shouya didn't get his way, but he was determined to see Shouko again to fix, or try to fix all the damage he did to her.

    Source

Which brings me to the scene involving cherry blossoms, and that is that I think it's quite right of Shouya to try to redeem himself with his main affected, Shouko, which is a love of a person who still believes in humanity and forgives him, being on the bridge, Shouya tells Shouko that he was thinking that it wasn't a good idea to go see her, but then he thought that he should and that he was thinking about things like what friendship meant. The scene is pretty short, but that doesn't mean it's not a nice scene.

  6. The Colors Within || Colors, Friendship and Music!@ridgette488d

Konnichiwa minna-san! So for today I'm gonna review a movie that just aired last year. I already saw its trailer back then, but I forgot to check it out once it aired. Anyway, I finally watched it yesterday and I was amazed by how it brought a lot of memories—both recent and old ones. One of the main characters has synesthesia—a condition where usual senses get mixed up with other senses, and that brings back my memories of the time I was reading TNOTBIS. The boy there has synesthesia in which when he saw a circle around two dots and curling line, he doesn't see a smiley face rather he smelled baking cookies that's punctuated with two beeps and a low whine.

    IMG_20250308_094134.jpg

That's also quite the same with one of the MCs of this movie because she saw colors in other people but that's not the only thing that's odd because rather than seeing them, she felt them more—in short, she feels colors. It was an interesting concept because it wasn't entirely a fictional condition. So much for that, as for newer memories, recently in our music class, there's that instrument that was introduced and I'm not really familiar with it, but upon hearing what it sounds like, I already heard it before. It was theremin and I was really fascinated with how it sounded like. Enough with my memory trip, let's now immerse in the journey of three individuals whose fate got intertwined with colors and music in The Colors Within.

    About the Anime

    IMG_20250308_094513.jpg

The Colors Within (Kimi no Iro) is an anime movie that aired last August 30, 2024. This one-hour and forty-minute movie was animated by Science SARU and was an original one that was directed by Naoko Yamada. Like his previous works, Silent Voice and Liz and the Blue Bird, the theme of this movie is similar to theirs. Also, there's of 'course drama and a lot of music which made the movie emotionally gripping and entertaining.

    IMG_20250308_094550.jpg

So it all started with the story of the girl—Totsuko—who feels colors. Ever since then she already has that strange ability, but to avoid the possible discrimination, she hid that one. However, when Totsuko saw the color of her schoolmate Kimi, she could barely hide her fascination and excitement upon feeling her color. But just when she's getting immersed in Kimi's color, Kimi just stopped coming to school, and thus that starts the days of her attempt to find her. Her only lead was that Kimi was said to work now in a library—but which library?

    IMG_20250308_094617.jpg

After days of visiting various libraries, she met a mysterious white cat who led her to a secluded library, and that's where she finally found her. Eventhough she doesn't have any previous experience in playing an instrument, she finds herself forming a band with Kimi and Rui—a cute musician that she also met the day she found Kimi. They agreed to practice at the abandoned church on Rui's hometown island, and as their practices went on, their bonds slowly deepened and the music they made started to sound richer. But those carefree moments don't last forever because later on they again have to face the harsh reality—reality that they need to move on and face the life of being an adult.

    IMG_20250308_094703.jpg

I don't know what I exactly felt after I finished watching it. It's like the feeling I felt after I watched Silent Voice, though this movie is a lot more, for me, nicer to watch because it doesn't evoke a lot of negative feelings. The way that it delivered an emotionally provoking plot without giving me major emotional damage was admirable. The pacing may be slow at first but you will not really mind it if you're immersed with its cozy theme. I was lowkey expecting for dramatic turn of events, but anyway, there's no such thing as that in this movie. It does have a climax, but not the one that will devastate you emotionally. Rather it's a nice kind of peak of the plot because in that part it really showed the characters' improvements.

    IMG_20250308_094716.jpg

It was heartwarming and inspiring because it portrayed some issues that resonated well with me. I'm already in my adulting period so I kinda understand how it feels to be like them and honestly, it's terrifying to be an adult. Personal dilemmas and various responsibilities do really converge once you're on this stage, and they will leave no room for slacking off, and this movie portrayed what it is to be in that situation without making it highly dramatic and emotionally devastating. Even though it's delivered in a lighthearted manner, the conflict still feels genuine and affecting. However, if you're not into an anime with no major twists and tear-jerking moments, then better steer clear because its lighthearted and cozy drama isn't for you.

    IMG_20250308_094728.jpg

As for its visuals, for me, it's easily the greatest part of this anime. Not that I don't like its plot, it's just its animation and art style were amazing. The level of detail in the animation was astonishing and also it's enthralling to watch how smooth and delicate their movements are—even the random act of changing clothes was mesmerizing to watch. The color palette that this movie used was vivid but soothing at the same time, and the character designs weren't that complex and unique, but those designs matched well with their personalities. Particularly I like how Totsuko was drawn because, unlike the conventional anime girl's design which was mostly skinny, she was portrayed a little fuller but not heavily drawn.

    IMG_20250308_094740.jpg

Her design emanates comfort and charm, and further, if there are parts of their design that stand out, they are their eyes and lashes. They're beautiful and expressive and I can't help myself but focus on them especially when they are in close-up angle. On the other hand, like its vivid art style, the soundtrack of this movie was a blast! From the quirky background instrumentals to the upbeat and jam-worthy songs—they're definitely entertaining! And before I forgot, the theremin part really enchanted me. The sound it produced was so emotional and classy, but at the same time it's playful. It's so cool watching Rui play it, and the part where he played Giselle was my favorite among the soundtrack.

    IMG_20250308_094751.jpg

All in all, I rate this anime 9/10 because it had a slow start which at some point made me impatient and almost bored. But the rest after those tranquil moments are beautiful and engaging scenes that really hooked me up. The visuals and music were really the things that I love the most in this movie, so if you're looking for a lighthearted anime with beautiful visuals and animation, relatable characters, and an awesome soundtrack then might as well try watching The Colors Within.

Before I end this review, I'll share with you its trailer, so—

  7. A Silent Voice-A bittersweet masterpiece@omokhafue527d

Hi guys, it's me again. So there's like this invisible rope around my neck pulling me back and away from the world(here). I try to escape it my snapping my neck but end up dying multiple times and I think I've exhausted my resurrection powers unless some miracle comes and I'm being offered a sac of lives. Actually, just ignore everything I just said, haha.

It's exam period and I have been low-key,crashing out. I seriously need to go outside and touch grass at some point because I have been so couped up in this room with my notes and textbook scattered all around and I'm minutes to losing my mind. So I chose the second and non existent option and decided to watch something to take my mind off all that. Some of you would've probably seen A silent voice. It's really amazing and I'm going to drop a little review about it now.

5acc4fba56226d361289cc72892a80c3.jpg Source A silent voice is a coming of age series that aired around 2016. The story starts with Shoya Ishida, a kid who bullies Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf girl who transfers to his elementary school. He makes her life miserable—pulling cruel pranks, mocking her, and even damaging her hearing aids. Eventually, the bullying escalates to the point where Shoko transfers out, and Shoya's classmates turn on him, blaming him for everything. He ends up isolated, becoming the outcast he once made Shoko feel like.

Fast forward to high school, and Shoya is a mess. He’s wracked with guilt, struggles with self-worth, and has cut himself off from everyone around him. In an effort to make amends, he tracks down Shoko, who is still dealing with the emotional scars from her past. He tries to apologize and, surprisingly, she forgives him, and they slowly start to build a connection.

f1c99c9510f4713b2f0175581a17eb8a.jpg Source The story dives deep into their attempts to navigate this fragile relationship. Shoya begins to understand the consequences of his actions and tries to bring Shoko some happiness. But it’s not smooth sailing—Shoko’s family, especially her sister and mother, aren’t thrilled about Shoya being back in her life. And Shoko herself struggles with feelings of worthlessness, blaming herself for all the pain she’s caused others, which eventually leads to a heartbreaking attempt at suicide. Shoya, in a desperate move, saves her but ends up hospitalized after falling from a balcony.

Through these challenges, Shoya starts to reconnect with others, including his estranged classmates, and begins to forgive himself. The film ends on a hopeful note, with Shoya and Shoko attending a school festival together. Shoya, now able to face the world again, symbolically "opens his ears" to the people around him, finally ready to move forward.

260e2cc6a0e882969d53fa568bbeada1.jpg Source This was a very bittersweet story for me. The concept was mortifyingly beautiful (Is there an adjective like this?). Ranging from the emotional and mental abuse Shoya impacted on Shoko, you can't help but feel so much pity and sadness for Shoko and then there's Shoya who struggles with self identification and trying to pick up pieces of him after everything. It's a conflicted situation because Shoya is not meant to be a likable character but he is. And does that make me a bad person? For liking someone who inflicted so much on another? It's conflicting and puts me in deep thoughts sometimes. And then you see Shoya grow and try to reconnect with the world, fixing up himself and looking at everything with a different pair of lens. It's admirable and beautiful to see his "redemption arc". It's a two hours movie and something you can watch in a go,with popcorn and snacks or just air. I hope you like it,cause I loved it.

    Thanks for reading.

    Overview/Resumen

Shōya Ishida is a 6th year elementary school boy who is a little maladjusted, suddenly a new student arrives at his school, Shouko Nishimiya, who was deaf and mute and for this reason could only communicate by writing messages in a notebook, for this reason Shōya and her friends begin to bother her, making fun of her, later, when they begin to teach sign language classes, only one person is interested, Sahara, a girl who also wanted to be her friend, but that girl stopped going to classes in view of that she could not stand social pressure, since the other girls began to tease her for being friends with the deaf girl, Shōya even becomes more violent and cruel, on one occasion even ripping off her hearing aids with such force that it causes her to bleed. The girl's mother suspects that she is being harassed at school, so she talks to the principal and soon discovers that Shōya is one of those who harass her, shortly after his mother takes him to the girl's house to ask for help. apologies, although she does not return to school, but is transferred to another one, little by little Shōya begins to feel tormented by the cruel way in which he and his friends treated Shouko and his life begins to change drastically, while depression goes gaining ground.

    My Opinion/Mi Opinión

This film is worth seeing for all ages and cultures in the world, because I feel that it is a way of explaining how bullying can negatively influence people. Shōya Ishida was a child with no sense of empathy, he did not care about the suffering of others. , but everything seemed to turn against him and in this way he began to understand the magnitude of what he had done, since his former friends betrayed him and in this way he began to feel a little like Shouko felt.

Something that caught my attention from a psychological point of view is that they used a very good and infallible resource to demonstrate Shōya's feelings, and that is that after feeling betrayed by his friends, he could no longer relate to anyone else, so that when we see subjective shots in the film that put us in the skin of the protagonist, we see the other characters with an friendship.

I think that this film offers us different perspectives of a problem that unfortunately is more present in our society every day, it also shows us the consequences of this serious problem, bullying can lead the victim to problems as serious as suicide, and the harassers little by little it transforms them into criminal monsters with no respect for life and humanity. History also shows us that indifference only aggravates the problem and that only by facing it can it be resolved. Shōya was brave to recognize his mistake and want to correct it, so for me he was a great character with tremendous evolution.

  9. Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice) - Many Feelings With Few Words [ENG -ESP]@kuronokenshi823d

Perhaps one of the strongest and most realistic aspects of which we can see in anime stories are those related to suicide and abuse, although they are not usually very frequent in anime there are always some exceptions that decide to tell stories with this background making it even more dramatic by leaving aside all fantasy or special aspects in the story and present a simple Slice of life with this theme. I recently saw Koe no Katachi also known as A Silent Voice which among fans of dramatic and sad anime is quite well known and although the truth is that I have to admit that I found it a good movie, it was not as shocking as I expected and even more after having recently seen Your Lie In April which is also a very well known and much sadder series.

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_27_17 p. m..png

The beginning of this story is quite unusual because it presents a couple of peculiar protagonists and perhaps not so frequent in the anime especially talking about Shouko Nishimiya who is a young introvert and hearing impaired, although it does not have a total deafness and be able to achieve partial understanding when they speak to him paused, she needs to use special headphones for this condition and also when trying to speak she does not gesticulate completely or correctly the words, for this reason we are shown when she appears in the classroom as a child, she invites classmates to communicate with her through a notebook and write down the whole conversation.

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_30_00 p. m..png

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_31_09 p. m..png

On the other hand, Shouya Ishida will be the other protagonist but with the background of the mean and bullying child who enjoys teasing Nishimiya, humiliating her to make the class laugh and even throwing away her special headphones, as if it were a kind of karma lesson of life we see how during childhood Ishida ends up passing the limits of bullying Nishimiya and therefore in addition to receiving punishment from teachers and his mother now becomes the bullied and hated by the whole class and realizes how now living on the side of the abused is not as funny as he saw it being the bully, for this reason his personality and mentality changes completely and we have the TimeSkip to adolescence where the whole story unfolds.

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_31_25 p. m..png

Something quite interesting is the clear social phobia that Ishida developed after everything that happened in childhood, as now all the people around him are represented with purple X's on his face which can be interpreted as that he considers them all complete strangers and people with whom he simply can not relate or be, as a sign of danger or caution, in the same way the background of suicide is presented where after seeming to have taken the decision ends up repenting product of an encounter with Nishimiya and regret that may be his friend to perhaps make amends for what happened in the past.

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_32_24 p. m..png

The story develops basically centered on the new relationship between Ishida and Nishimiya where clearly both seem to feel interest in being friends and may even develop sentimental interests for each other, but in the same way it is presented as Ishida presents doubts and uncertainties about how he should act, he still has social isolation and fear of approaching others motivated by feelings of guilt he may harbor after his childhood, although it is never presented a clear demonstration of repentance on his part, a direct apology to Nishimiya where it is appreciated as he really realized that all his mistakes and that he is sorry, although it is noted his possible depression and frustration with his past actions seems that at the same time he does not know very well what is all he feels or thinks and although he tries to approach Nishimiya it seems that he still feels that he does not deserve to be friends with her.

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_32_32 p. m..png Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_32_40 p. m..png Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_33_04 p. m..png

The secondary characters have an interesting role where they also try to be friends with Nishimiya and try to fix the things of the past, but there is also a certain rejection of both Ishida and accepting part of the blame for the actions of the past where, although they did not bother her directly, they did not seem to be so bothered by Ishida's actions and encouraged him in a certain way. The development of the story is entertaining, with dramatic moments and other quite sentimental ones, where personally it manages to show how complicated and difficult it is to express the feelings and the way of acting of the characters, after the actions that happened, and this makes sense considering their ages and that these actions were done as children when perhaps they did not fully understand the context in which they were.

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_34_55 p. m..png

    Separador Kuronokenshi.jpg

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_40_32 p. m..png

A quite remarkable aspect is how in addition to not giving as much importance or protagonist to Nishimiya as Ishida she also presents an attitude perhaps somewhat wrong where she feels that all the things that happened in a certain way were her fault and tries to apologize for everything, a personality besides introverted quite insecure, even taking the same initial decision of Ishida to try to take her own life.

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_41_30 p. m..png

One aspect that could be criticized is the end of the film which ends up being perhaps a little ambiguous and does not end up closing the story as we wanted making you end up with a slight feeling of doubt and dissatisfaction, on the other hand a very good aspect of this film is its animation and soundtrack, its designs end up being good, the tonalities and intensities manage to enhance the dramatism or sentimentality of the scenes, the design and style of the X's in the faces of the people manages to call much the interest of the viewer, in some scenes the quality of them is quite high and manages to be a very good shot to highlight the story. Although it is a very good movie, an icon of dramatic anime and even in MyAnimeList has an incredible classification positioning itself in the position #17 I think that some aspects could have been better developed and personally I consider that it could have created more emotions of sadness and melancholy in the viewer.

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_27_17 p. m..png

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_31_25 p. m..png

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_32_15 p. m..png

    Separador Kuronokenshi.jpg

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_32_24 p. m..png

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_34_55 p. m..png

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_40_32 p. m..png

    Koe no Katachi (Silent Voice).mp4 - Reproductor multimedia VLC 6_4_2024 8_41_30 p. m..png

  10. A Silent Voice [ENG/ESP]@seki1866d

I think I'll have to thank God for my grace when watching the best of anime movies, and I do this unknowingly too. This movie-which I at first thought to be a full anime show-is one that has been on my list to watch for a long time but I totally ignored it. Well I just watched this movie now and God, how stupid I've been for not watching it sooner.

    A Silent Voice.

*** ### Plot. > Shouka Nishimiya is a girl with diminishing hearing who transfers to a new school in fifth grade. At this school, she experiences harsh bullying, tolerating it for some time before giving up and reporting. The bullies, we're admonished with the ringleader of the group Shodo Ishida taking the fall. Shodo Ishida, becomes ostracized throughout middle school and up to highschool. Now in highschool, Ishida has given up on life, yet before he leaves, he decides to try and make things right by apologizing to the girl he bullied. *** I have just one thought after watching this movie.. > **Wow.**

It was just such an experience. Despite having a slow progressive ending, and diminishing your expectations, the movie increases its pace, it's tension and blows through that already diminished expectations in leaps and bounds. Everything happened so fast, so it was hard to point out and distinguish clearly this film good rocking points, regardless I'll try my best to make this a well detailed review without any spoilers.

    What I Liked.

*** ##### - The Story and Themes Discussed. I decided to watch this solely because I needed a romance anime for the [Anime Realm Monthly Quest For February](https://peakd.com/hive-158489/@theanimerealm/the-anime-realm-quest-for-february-2024) and because it was the first romance anime that came to my mind. Although after watching the first thirty minutes, I quickly realized that was way much more than a run off the mill romance anime with a cupboard kept plot. This is an anime whose story could easily be one gleaned from real life, especially real life in this century where middle school is like a war zone for children. The themes discussed in this movie and the way they were discussed is unparalleled. The snobby, child-like yet effective acts of bullying really dug up memories I had of my troubles in school and I couldn't help but be moved at the sheer resilience of Nishimiya in her quest to make a friend. ![untitled.gif](https://media.tenor.com/BllJmpK7SEIAAAAC/insomnia.gif) After the act of hurt, we then move to Ishida's quest for forgiveness and love for self, a very sensitive subject in today's world where depression is paramount and rampant. ![untitled.gif](https://media.tenor.com/kX0ysVD23b4AAAAC/a-silent-voice.gif)

When Nishimiya forgives him, one would think that the story ends there, but no, the movie shows that it has quite more to tell us, and all we need to do is watch and listen.

    - The Characters.

Forgive me, because I don't even know the writer of this movie at this time of writing....

But whoever he was, he was a genius when choosing the characters. It's a set of characters that are very rampantly seen in typical middle school friend groups and it took a great eye and mind of him to perfectly write them out. These characters above all brought depth and life to this story. The ringleader of the bullies who was blamed and at first forced but now willingly is facing his retribution. untitled.gif Then his clique, each who simply bailed when the jig was up, tossing him under the bus to save their own hides. It was their individual actions that makes the scene heart wrenching and at the same time heartwarming to watch. The characters, with all their flaws where wholesome.

    - The Music And Feels.

    untitled.gif

This film had a lovely soundtrack for every moment and it was implemented perfectly. Every tune played on the piano keys plus the timing seemed to add a different wave of emotion to that scene. Also part of the soundtrack and music is the occasional silence some scenes have. This occasions were implemented so perfectly they became nearly poetic. Such sombre moments moved me the most, making me fall in love so much with the cinematography crew.

    - The Animation
One can't deny, the studio ate the script and produced gold. The animation, is timeless.... I don't know how to explain it... It just is. The beautiful scenes of the koi fish, a symbolism-*that I haven't fully grasped in the anime yet I fully respected*- where a beauty to watch with their fluid movement. The characters faces were a true wonder to watch, especially at times of high emotions, which were plenty. It's an animation that was aimed to leave a mark. I assure you it surely did. *** *** ####

    Overall Review.

*** This is an anime that is unrivaled when it comes to the emotions. The themes, plots and characters are such which we tend to see and can identify everyday. A true beauty to watch, a show wish doesn't just need you to watch, it demands you to listen. A stunning 10 out of 10 ✨.

    ESPANOL

No sé cómo explicarlo...

The story focuses on two main characters: Shouya Ishida and Shouko Nishimiya. Shouya is a boy who in his childhood was very naughty and sought to have fun at the expense of others. Shouko is a deaf girl who transfers to Shouya's school when they are both in sixth grade. Shouya, seeing that Shouko is different and cannot communicate well with her classmates, begins to pick on her and make her life miserable. The other students join in the bullying or ignore it, and the teacher does nothing to stop it either. Shouko, despite everything, tries to be kind to Shouya and offers her friendship, but he cruelly rejects her. One day, Shouya breaks Shouko's hearing aids and makes her bleed. This causes Shouko's mother to show up at school and demand an explanation. Then, Shouya's classmates blame him for everything and abandon him. From that moment on, Shouya becomes the target of bullying and rejection by his former friends.

The film jumps several years later, when Shouya is a senior in high school. He has become a lonely and depressed boy, who hates himself and can't look anyone in the eye. He has decided to commit suicide, but first he wants to apologize to Shouko for everything she did to him. So he searches for her address and finds her at a center for the hearing impaired. There he meets her again and gives her a note saying that he wants to be her friend. Shouko accepts his offer and teaches him sign language so she can communicate better with him. From there, a relationship begins between the two of them that will lead them to confront their past traumas, their present feelings and their hopes for the future.

A Silent Voice is a film that addresses very sensitive and complex issues with great delicacy and depth. Bullying is one of the most serious problems affecting many children and adolescents around the world, and can have devastating consequences for their mental and physical health. The film shows how bullying can generate a cycle of violence and hatred that harms both victims and aggressors, and how it is necessary to break that cycle with repentance, forgiveness and compassion. Hearing impairment is another important theme addressed in the film, as it shows the difficulties faced by deaf people in integrating into a society that is not prepared to meet their specific needs. The film also highlights the importance of learning sign language in order to communicate with deaf people and respect their identity and culture.

The film has a very beautiful and detailed visual style, reflecting the care and passion that Kyoto Animation studio put into its making. The characters are very well designed and animated, expressing their emotions very naturally and realistically. The scenery is very varied and colorful, from the school classroom to the amusement park, including the bridge over the river and the Buddhist temple. The music is another element that enriches the film, with a soundtrack that combines soft, emotive melodies with electronic and experimental sounds. The music helps to create the right atmosphere for each scene, whether of joy, sadness, tension or romance.

Greetings again my dear hivers. This time I bring you another moving anime as well as optimistic. In a way it has a subtle resemblance to Your name but of course this is another story.

A silent voice may seem like another youth anime for girls at first glance but as the film progresses we realize that it has a beautiful plot that goes beyond a teenage situation and can be applied for all ages.

Shouko Nishimiya is a deaf-mute girl who suffers from bullying in elementary school. This harassment is led by Shoya Isida who is in charge of teasing her verbally and even physically, breaking her feelings little by little. At first Nishimiya endures all this bullying and teasing, always having a smile on her lips and treating well even those who treated her badly, but after having her hearing aids thrown away more than eight times, Nishimiya's mother decides to remove her. from college.

The teachers soon have a talk at the school and all the students accuse Shoya as the only culprit when many of them were guilty as well. The truth is that Shoya is enclosed in four walls and guilt breaks him.

Years later, studying in high school, Shoya meets Nishimiya again and tries to keep in touch with her, but of course she moves away from him, afraid of having to face the bully who made her life impossible when she was younger. Shoya for all this guilt tries many times to communicate with her and throughout this process she realizes that he erases people's faces, as if not wanting to hear from anyone, feeling harassed by everyone as if the roles had changed.

    Source

Shoya begins to fear people and finds it difficult to find friends but little by little he discovers new people who will help him communicate with Nishimiya. Each character has an important role in Shoya's life and there are situations in this movie that can be really sad (I cried a couple of times) and moving but always with a positive ending that makes us feel a respite.

A silent voice is precisely about communication and as strange as it may seem, the fact that one of the main characters is deaf and mute does not take away the meaning of the film, perhaps quite the opposite, because being able to speak is not necessarily to communicate, to listen and assimilating what others tell us is also important and that is what Nishimiya does.

    Source

Nishimiya is a sweet and charming character, I can't find anything negative about her other than the frustration she sometimes has for wanting to communicate like the others instead of sign language but she inadvertently teaches all the characters a great lesson together. to Shoya that beyond being sorry I value the lesson and put it into practice.

After being a stalker he ends up being a nice person who wants to take care of Nishimiya and other characters but there are certain misunderstandings that make the plot a little twist that almost ends up being catastrophic but with a happy ending.

This is a story that teaches us a lot, about friendship and also about the psychological damage that many of us can do to others without really realizing what we are doing, just because we think it is fun. We must be more empathetic with everyone around us because we never know the situation that others may be going through. In Nishimiya's case, it was easier to know what was happening to him and how he could feel, imagine being teased and not being able to express discontent like other people, it would be terribly frustrating.

We all have the right to an opportunity and also to ask for forgiveness and do good deeds, maturing is a process that not all of us learn quickly but humility, respect and communication are essential to achieve it and that is what this film teaches us.

I hope you liked this review and that you tell me how you thought it was and if you have already seen the movie please do not hesitate to make me a comment, I love reading all your comments and being able to respond to you. Greetings to all Hivers, I love you !!!

  13. A Silent Voice: A Great Entry Point to Anime@ahmadmanga2030d

When someone asks for an Anime movie recommendation, the top three recommendations I see are: (1) Anything by Ghibli (2) Your Name (3) A Silent Voice.

    c_mkybsxsag3gpz.jpg

I watched some Ghibli moves but I haven't watched Your Name yet. The movie I watched and keep coming back to is A Silent Voice movie! It's a story of redemption and self-acceptance that I think everyone should watch at least once in their life!

While I will describe the story below, I think it's best if you go into it not knowing anything, what I would say is that it's very emotional and will make you tear up of happiness and sadness, at more than one point through the movie.

A Silent Voice is one of the most realistic anime movies ever & all characters in the movie are like people you must have met in your real life. I believe anyone would relate to at least one character of the main cast.

A Silent Voice is on Netflix if you have Subscription

    The Story

The story follows Shouya Ishida. In grade school, he was a bully who constantly targeted Shouko Nishimiya, the deaf girl in his class that wasn't treated well even by his other classmates.

Now in High School, Shouya can't look at people's faces anymore. He plans to commit suicide, believing that there's no forgiveness for what he has done. Before he dies, however, he wanted to apologize to Shouko so he starts looking for her.

They meet again, and after learning how Shouya regrets what he had done, and learned Sign Language for her, she forgives him. So, their story of redemption and learning to accept oneself begins.

tumblr_pjjqspivxt1x2v5jso1_1280.jpg The movie poster in Japan...

What sells the story though is not its premise, but the characters and how well their development is executed! All of them, even supporting characters are all multi-layered and feel human, which lets the emotional parts of the story hit harder.

I've got to mention Some of them didn't have time to be fleshed out in the movie version compared to the manga.

Why A Silent Voice is a Great Entry Point to Anime?

The movie has everything you need to know about anime to start watching longer shows.

    • It's short: Only 2 hours long, and offers a complete experience.
    • Great art direction: The art itself looks like any normal slice-of-life anime would look like but the great animation, use of colors & captivating backgrounds (based on real-life locations,) make A Silent Voice a joy to look at.
    • It doesn't have a lot of anime tropes: Some anime expects you to be familiar with anime tropes. You can understand this movie without knowing any. Though some understanding of the Japanese society works could help.
    • Relatable characters: A strong point of anime stories is the reliability. A Silent Voice characters have real struggles.
    • Emotional voice acting: That goes for all anime series in Japan, even if you don't understand the language you can feel the emotions just from the voices. (Not sure about the Dub, I didn't watch it.)
    • The topic matter is difficult: It's hard to make a live-action movie about this since children are involved. The story is showcased in a beautiful way that people of all ages can learn and understand. (I don't recommend this to children though, the topic is difficult.)

The movie also depicts people with psychological disorders very realistically, which is rare for anime. As someone who has some social anxiety, I can tell you it's depicted surprisingly accurately with one of the characters in this movie!

anime_koe_no_katachi_shouko_nishimiya_shouya_ishida_wallpaper_preview.jpg Shouya & Shouko as children

    Some Nice Things to Know

    • The Japanese title Koe no Katachi means: The Shape of Voice.
    • Because of the sensitive topic matter of the story, the author of the Manga struggled to get it published.
    • The Movie adapts most of the Manga story (7 Volumes/62 Chapters) into a two hour animated film. Many things were left-out but the result is still nice. As good as the Manga or better in my opinion.
    • If you watched the movie and loved Mashiba, YOU MUST READ THE MANGA! His character arc isn't adapted in the movie version.

  14. Koe no Katachi (The Shape of Voice), a cinematic masterpiece@felipejoys2494d

Hands down the best movie I've ever seen, even considering non-animated titles. Genres: Slice of Life and Drama.

    A Silent Voice

The official english title translation is awful. It takes away from the original intent. However, this is the only bad thing anyone can say about the entire animation.

The protagonist, Ishida, starts out as a spontaneous bully child who is eventually struck by how despicable his actions were and starts to resent himself for picking on a deaf girl.

Now in his last year of school, he still isn't able to deal with his past sins, which leads him to become a social shut-in who eventually decides to suicide, but changes his mind at the very last second.

He sets out to meet the person who he had once bullied. At this point, the plot expands into everyone related to his situation with greater depth: his old friends, his family and the bullied person's family.

We get to know everyone's lives who were involved with him since he cast himself out years earlier, and how they deal with each other in the present, along with new acquaintances.

Koe no Katachi presents us with an emotional ride. One you'll feel happy to have watched once it comes to an ending. Throughly recommended to everyone.

    Manga

Koe no Katachi was first presented to the world as a highly acclaimed story, but the movie is truly brilliant, so even if you decide to read the manga first, don't miss out on watching it!

  18. Motivational Series #11: KOE NO KATACHI (an anime review and motivational post)@tegoshei3049d

Have you ever been bullied? Have you ever bullied someone? What do you think it's like to be bullied? to bully? And what if, the bully gets bullied?
Nowadays, the issue of "bullying" is pretty rampant especially in schools. Some might think it's "normal" because the bully and the one being bullied are kids... and it's nothing serious. However, I think otherwise. Bullying is something we shouldn't take lightly for it will gravely affect both parties; physically, mentally and emotionally.

A few weeks ago, I decided to watch the anime called "Koe no Katachi" or also known as "A Silent Voice" in English. I thought it was another cute and entertaining love story, but I thought wrong. The story of this movie delves deeper and is shouting out a message that everyone should be very mindful of. I must say it's such an eye-opener for each and everyone of us.
    # What Was The Story About?

Shouya Ishida, the main guy character, was such a wild boy when he was in his elementary years. He and his friends always try to kill boredom in the most eccentric way. Then came a transfer student named, Nishimiya Shouko. She wasn't an ordinary transfer student... she's special. Special in a way that she needs extra care because of her condition which is being deaf.
Despite her condition, she was trying her best to fit in. She wanted to communicate with her new classmates and find friends she could feel normal with. Unfortunately, instead of fitting in, she became the object of her classmates' amusement. She was bullied by Ishida and his friends as well as most of her other classmates. Her life became a total mess, but she still tried to continue doing her best until her mom found out that she's been bullied.
When the issue exploded, all of the blame was put on Ishida's shoulder. His friends and classmates turned his back on him. He, too, became an object to them. Everything he did to Nishimiya was done to him by his so-called friends. His suffering carried on until he graduated in elementary and even in middle school.

He came to a point when he feels so alone. He felt guilty with what he has done as a kid and this nightmare has been haunting him ever since. He couldn't even see anybody's face anymore. All that's left in him was emptiness. YES, depression came in and gave him suicidal ideation. There was a time when he really attempted to take his life, but I'm glad he didn't. Instead, he came to realize what he has to do and that was to find and apologize to Nishimiya.
It was never easy for him and Nishimiya. Their "reunion" didn't let them escape from the shadows of their past. Curious yet? I recommend you watch the movie. It's worth every second. I personally listed it as one of my "must-see" movies because of the message that it will give to people. I want everyone to understand the consequences of bullying. I want people to know that depression is not in any way simple. Through this movie, you will realize how certain circumstances in life could lead into something unimaginable.
    # Time To Get Motivated!
As usual, I took some lines from the anime and share it here with you. My reason for this is to let everyone know that watching anime isn't plainly for pleasure and killing time. Just like any other movies, it tells us a story... it gives us a message to learn. It makes us realize a lot of things in life. So yeah, here they are...
    ##

Friendship lies somewhere beyond things like words and logic.

It might be funny but it does make sense. I sometimes wonder, "Why am I even friends with these crazy people?". No matter how I elicit the remaining nerve cells I have, it's still very difficult to answer this question. Sometimes, we don't need reasons for something to happen... it just happens. Yes, we choose friends... both consciously and unconsciously. There are just people that really clicks well with us. Even if we just met that person, we feel like we've been friends since forever. At this certain point, it isn't us who chose to be friends... it was fate. hihi~
In the anime, Ishida was definitely at a loss. His so-called "friends" betrayed him and now he's doesn't even understand what it means to be friends. He was constantly finding the answer... he wanted reasons. When one character by the name of Nagatsuka Tomohiro came to his life, he again tried to open the door for friendship in his heart.
Really, friendship is something special for me. I value my friends to the point that they become my family. I realized just now... my high school friends (both in the countryside and the city) call me "Ate" (ah-te); it means "older sister". When I asked them why *(because most of them are a year older than me coz I became a first grader at the age of 6)* they answered, "because you always look after us and you know what we are thinking even if we don't say it, just like a sister." Our friends are our treasure, they are the family we choose to have. <3

Everyone suffers in their life, too. That's why you also have to love the bad parts of yourself and move forward.

Nobody's perfect! Life is never easy! We all go through sh*t in life. We become a mess... and no matter how hard we try, things don't always go our way. It's normal... it's part of our life, but what differs is how we take in all these things. The key there is "ACCEPTANCE". Sometimes, if we simply accept, it's much easier to move forward. Once you accept, you''ll have a clearer view of what's in front of you... then you can think much clearer on what your next step would be.
Accepting one's flaws and imperfection is indeed a difficult and challenging task, but when you go out of your way and face this challenge, everything else would become easier.
Another thing is SELF-LOVE. In the latter part of the anime, Nishimiya started loathing herself. She had these thoughts that everything bad that's going on around her is entirely her fault and everything would be alright if she disappears. It's painful to think that it also happens in real life. Yes, we might think it's simply running away but we don't know exactly how that person thinks and feels.
I suddenly remember the lyrics of a Japanese song called "Love Yourself" by KATTUN. The translation goes like this:
    > [Love Yourself Come on, don't overdo yourself As your heart is, as you are Realize this love that can shine I love this you that you hate](https://makikawaii-jklyrics.blogspot.com/2010/02/kat-tun-love-yourself-single-lyrics.html)

This song has inspired me in a lot of ways. Actually, this song was used in the live action version of the anime "Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge". The song encourages listeners to love themselves, flaws and imperfection included. Aside from that, the last part "I love this you that you hate" refers to "Acceptance". You're pretty lucky to have someone who can accept you as you are. However, if others can't accept us as we are, at least we should accept ourselves, right?
In my case, I spent a lot of years in discovering who I really am. Even until now, I discover parts of myself every day. It's a never ending process because we keep on evolving. Nevertheless, the bottom line remains the same. Let's get to know ourselves, accept who we are, but let's not close our doors to change. Accepting ourselves is just the first stage... if we see something unlikely, let's accept it and do our best to change and be a better version of ourselves.

  19. A silent voice.@noemilunastorta3202d

As you know, I am passionate about Japanese animation, last night,  after a couple of weeks of fire, I wanted to relax and I decided to put  on an anime and at the same time lay a hot herbal tea.

My choice fell on a 2016 movie I had seen on the trailer, "A Silent  Voice" or Japanese "Koe no katachi" directed by Naoko Yamada, drawn from  the same manga.

I love the graphics right from now, reminds me of various anime I have  seen lately, all of them on a sentimental, very pretty subject, cute  girls, slim bodies and colorful clothes, the classic shoujio anime of  recent years.

The protagonist Ishida, is a normal boy, the existence of him was shocked by the arrival of a new classmate: Nishimiya.

The arrival of her triggers the little demon that is in him. The worst of him.

Nishimiya is deaf, communicates only through a blocknotes and sign language.

    Her disability is immediately targeted.

Initially  accepted with pietism and condescension, Nishimiya soon becomes the  perfect victim for class bullies, of which the main bully is Ishida. Anger grows heavier and the poor girl reacts to everything with a  smile, until, after the last bruise that leaves her wounded, she decide to leave the school.

Ishida and his companions hate her, hate her weakness, and they were unable to  understand her so they  try to destroy her, with the cruelty of the children to  those who are different.

She is not like them is therefore against them. As always it is easier to attack than to understand.

Diversity scares and even more frightens her not reacting to her, her smile.

Smiling hurts, this makes Ishida angry and disgusted.

And he cries every day, "You're disgusting." to the cute smiling girl.

Ishida grows, the high school arrive and new classmates too, with them new awareness.

    And karma.

Ishida has now earned the name of a bully and everyone keeps him away, avoiding him and deriding him . What he has suffered under Nishimiya now happens to him and therefore he understands that he has acted wickedly in his past. Now he is the disgusting who can not react, but wants to change things.

Ishida initiates a process of redemption and for this process he needs  Nishimiya and her forgivness.

So research her, finds her in a new school and establishes a relationship of friendship with her. A friendship that grows more and more, restoring it to the eyes of his companions, but not to his own.

The  two guys begin a journey of mutual knowledge, to understand why they  have done wrong, Nishimiya hates herself because of her weakness and  Ishida hates hirself for his bullying. They both share the hate for themselves. A hate that take them to make tragic decisions.

But like every sentimental anime that is respected, love is triumphant and even friendship.

And the will to overcome the barriers, Ishida learns the language of  the signs and in a delicate silence communicates with Nishimiya, in that  silent voice that only they can hear.

Going beyond stereotypes, prejudices and beyond their weaknesses.

  21. Movie Review: A Silent Voice@cheah3406d

The anime Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice) is an excellent movie marred by flawed execution. At its heart, Koe no Katachi is a story about redemption, friendship and overcoming social anxiety, covering childhood bullying, suicide and the psychic scars of isolation and ostracism. The anime makes excellent use of its heavy subject matter, creating a realistic and entertaining character study.

    But only of the protagonist.

    The Sole Driver

The story focuses on Ishida Shoya, a former delinquent trying to do good. When he was in elementary school, Nishimiya Shoko transferred into his class. Nishimiya is deaf, relying on hearing aids and communicating mainly through written notes on her notebook or through sign language. While she can speak, she is unable to properly articulate her words. Her mannerisms lead Ishida to pick on her, causing the rest of the class to join in.

Until one day, he goes too far.

In an instant, the entire class turns on him. Nishimiya transfers out. Nishimiya's deeds haunt him through the rest of his days in elementary school. Guilt and regret set in, festering into crippling social anxiety. In high school, Ishida is unable to even look at most people, picturing a 'X' in place of their faces.

With no plans and no hope for the future, Ishida contemplates suicide. But one day, he meets Nishimiya again, discovering that she attends the same high school. Ishida reaches out to her, and begins his long journey to acceptance, recovery and redemption.

The anime's critical weakness lies in having too many characters. Nearly named character from the manga appears in the anime. This leaves very little screen time for all of them. While a manga has the capacity to fully explore the minds and actions of supporting characters in depth, the two-hour anime adaptation can only do so much. The anime elects to focus on Ishida's struggles to face his past, understand the meaning of 'friendship', and fight through the mental block that isolates him from everyone else. While it was masterfully done, it came at the cost of character development for everyone else.

Every supporting character is defined by their deeds and personalities, and remain static for much of the film. Aside from Ishida, only Nishimiya Shoko and Yuzuru enjoy character growth -- the former by being more willing to interact with others, the latter by growing friendlier and less sullen.

While everybody has believable personas and act entirely in line with their core beliefs and attitudes, the secondary characters exist mainly as a means to reflect Ishida's progress in becoming more sociable. Indeed, characters like Mashiba Satoshi and Nishimiya Ito barely have spoken lines and almost no influence on the plot. Further, at times in the anime I found it difficult to understand why some characters did the things they do; only in the manga are these motivations revealed, such as why Ueno Naoka began bullying Nishimiya, why Yuzuru takes so many photographs, or why Mashiba joins in Ishida's social group.

It is inevitable for lengthy manga to suffer major cuts when adapted to the big screen, but at least in Koe no Katachi, the core ideas and story remain intact. It is a testimony to the studio that they managed to deliver a powerful anime in spite of eliminating major story arcs and being forced to work with many shallow characters.

    Almost-Amazing Cinematography

The major flaw of the anime is its cinematography. To be sure, Koe no Katachi has excellent visuals. Every scene is stylishly depicted, combining traditional anime iconography with beautiful background scenery and fluid motions. The art direction and soundtrack shifts at key moments, driving home Ishida's mental and emotional state.

However, those key moments are also interrupted by flashbacks and surreal sequences. This is especially jarring in the opening segments of the anime, covering Ishida's elementary school and early high school days. These shots distract from the main event instead of adding to it, making it more difficult to keep track of events and characters and muting the overall emotional impact of these scenes. The flashbacks could be cut from the anime without loss to the story -- and should have been, to retain its overall coherence.

    Final Thoughts

Koe no Katachi is a beautiful coming-of-age tale of friendship and redemption -- but poor cinematographic techniques undo the key scenes. It stars realistically-portrayed characters suffering from deep psychic stories and personal failings -- though the secondary characters are all static. Koe no Katachi is a few steps short of being a genuine masterpiece, but it is nonetheless an amazing story in its own right.
