  1. 📺 Barakamon (2014) | A Fun Slice Of Life Anime Series!@screenjournal452d

This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews.

    My 2nd Anime Series

After really enjoying 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors years ago which was the first anime video game I came in contact with and Giving my first Anime Series Death Note a go which blew me away.

I have been looking for something new to watch. I had Attack On Titan in mind but with many episodes and not too much time while I was on vacation last week. I did find I wanted something shorter.

My eye fell on a recommendation here on Hive from @zain21 and @onlyjob of the Barakamon Series from 2014 which I was sold on by the fact that it's 12x 20 Minute episodes in just 1 season which got a 8.2 on imdb. The setting of something slow-paced on an island with not too much action also attracted me.

I did watch the version where it's spoken in Japanese and with English Subtitles which honestly isn't optimal. I prefer English with Dutch subtitles as it just takes a lot less effort. At times I was just not quick enough to read and translate the english which certainly took away something from this series.

    The Story

Barakamon is a series that follows Seishu Handa who is an well-known artist doing Calligarphy his entire life but lost his way a bit which makes him snap after finishing 2nd in a contest. After Hitting one of the judges who rightfully criticized his entry, he is sent to a remote island by his father to find his way again. Once there, he wants to focus on his art getting better and finding his creativity again but he's constantly bugged by a small girl named Naru and other children and adults who live there. Each episode they kind of have a small adventure doing things which goes from fishing, to visiting graves, going to a festival, ... This to the point where he grows closer and closer to them while trying to find his creativity again.

So it's somewhat of a fun Slice of Life series without too many spectacular things happening but it was very relaxing and fun to watch even though I had some issues with the language and the subtitles. I really liked the setting of the island and the premise of a guy going there on his own to regroup while he made a lot of friends without even asking for it which as the start for him was annoying but at time passed by he grew attached to them. I didn't have anything with the entire art and Calligarphy thing but it also was not annoying. The runtime was nice with just 12 episodes and a finished story which was one of the things that pulled me toward it. I never got addicted to the series or watched it in a way that evoked many emotions but at the same time it did grip me after I completed it with the idea of going to such an island and having that kind of "adventure' really is something I would be into.

This one at times also reminded me of a game like Stardew Valley with the setting an at times the music, I also got a bit of zelda vibes from the sound at times and the general feeling that I liked of a movie like Winter in Sochco. All of this while it both was something for the adult and the kid in me which is always something that I look for.

    Conclusion

Barakamon while watching did not blow me away both because I didn't really know what to expect and because the language barrier certainly was there. However, I kept watching and I'm glad that I did as similar to the story and the main character, things really grew on me to the point where I wouldn't mind rewacthing it one day. So a good 7.6/10 which is a number that keeps rising and I kind of understand why it gets a 8.2 on IMDB. It was very different compared to Death Note but I'm glad that I watched it during my vacation.

    # 2025 Watched Tv-Series Score
    #01 Series Silo Season 2 7.1/10
    #02 Anime Death Note 8.9/10
    #03 Series Severance Season 2 8.9/10

(2014, 12 episodes)@onlyjob548d

Struggling city-dwelling artist-calligrapher seeks inspiration in remote island village. Most of the time he is surrounded by kids and teenagers. Being close to nature and being around good people heals his soul and empowers him to grow as an artist.

Nice simple story with a lot of fun and good mood.

  3. BARAKAMON: UN ANIME POUR TOUS LES ÂGES@albator851349d

  7. Barakamon: the art of calligraphy@redanime3265d

It tells you to have fishing? Well this anime is for you! It is precisely the literal translation of Barakamon ("having fishing" not "this anime is made for you" eh!). This shonen manga was imagined by the great Satsuki Yoshino that I did not know before. The anime was released in July 2014.

I was particularly marked by this anime because of its simple side but also its extremely well-crafted story. I would return as usual at the end of this post.

Summary of the story Handa is a 21-year-old Calligrapher. Following a bad criticism of an exhibition manager, he can not control his impulses and commit an act of violence. Marked by regret, his father known in the middle of Calligraphy will send him on an Island to see his art mature but also for the "human" experience. From tokyo to the goto islands, he will find himself disoriented. Fortunately he will meet a band of young people of all ages who will give him taste for the real things of life and allow him to evolve in his art.

What is calligraphy? It is important first of all to know what we are talking about. The calligrapher is the art of writing well letters and characters. Obviously it can be of the most rudimentary until it becomes an art to itself. That's all, the difficulty lies in writing with a brush and training the letters. Each calligrapher could then follow the academic path or even create their own style (as in the anime).

    calligraphie.jpg

The characters of Barakamon Barakamon is still a flop of characters colorful and also endearing. I had to make a choice by quoting only the most important but it is necessary to know that at no time a character is more erased than another.

Seishu Handa: The main character of the story, he gets so many adventures that he will be pitied. It is a character centered on himself that will evolve throughout the story. He will learn about the island to open up to people and is the actor of many of my laughter. For good reason the man of the town will learn that the countryside is not as restful as one might imagine.

Naru Koitoishi: more charismatic than this little girl there is not! It is the person who will turn many situations into a moment of pure happiness. It is the smallest of the band and most certainly the most engaging. His daredevil side will give Handa a cold sweat.

    My review of Barakamon :

Barakamon is like a breeze of cool air in summer, it feels good and we would like it to continue! I was really captivated by the story that seems uninteresting at first glance. Admittedly commonplace but the evolution of Handa is really pleasant. His egocentric character mixed with this desire to discover the world makes him a charismatic character and victim of situations comical. For once, I find this very short format me who is usually an anime fan who looks at himself quickly done well for once I will ask again. Why did this anime make me special?

No I will not speak to you about the universe of the traditional calligraphy that discovered it through the anime because it is not the case. It is for me the points of humor and reactions of the characters that are the strong point of the anime. It makes you hang on to the story from the start, each character is different and remains touching in its own way. There are no gentiles or villains, but misunderstood! In the end we regret as any good anime a haste to complete the story and that is what leaves a certain frustration.

It is graphically very beautiful and clean (when my connection will display it in HD) and the music remains "classic" nothing exceptional for me for this time (except the ending that I adore). So if you want to see a city dweller discover the happiness of the countryside, go and look at barakamon!

I hope you like this post! You can follow me @redanime so you don't miss my future posts.
