  1. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun 「月刊少女野崎くん 」 Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun (2014, 12 episodes)@onlyjob549d

Nice comedy about high school team of manga makers. Girl's schoolmate crush is an author in a popular monthly Shōjo (romantic) manga magazine aimed at a teenage female readers. Protagonists work together, seeking inspiration for manga characters and situations in other students they know.

Good hilarious humorous situations, like when Nozaki invites friends for sleepover and only observers them, not participating in their activities but taking notes of what they talk about, to later turn their conversation into girls-talk, which does not work of course. Another fun situation is when girl picks up manga magazine that fell from the boy's backpack and notices many colour bookmarks and handwritten notes. Surprised that he have such magazine in a first place, she wonders just how much attention boys pay to girls' manga, later realising (to her shock) that he remembers all manga characters' names and their dialogue lines. Little did she know that he writes for this very manga magazine...

Have you tried confessing to someone? No—not about something wrong that you've done, but about a romantic feeling? Well, personally I haven't tried that one, but I've witnessed a lot of that way back in my younger years—from the cringy, awkward, cute, and sweet to discreet, sad, hopeless, and tragic confessions; I've seen those! It's always amusing to watch them, and like the one who confessed, I also anticipate the answer. Will it be a sweet affirmative, a hard rejection, or a vague maybe? But what if the one you confessed to misunderstood what you said? I haven't witnessed a confession like that... However, what if it turned out that way?

    IMG_20250106_122818.jpg

That's basically what happened to the FMC in the anime I binge-watched last Saturday. After gathering all the courage she had, she confessed her pent-up feelings for her crush, but she kinda messed it up, and that confession ended up as a misunderstanding. It's really funny how she tried to salvage her confession, but anyway, the damage has been done, and the boy was totally oblivious, so with no choice, she just go with the flow. So now join me as I share a bit (really?) of Sakura's attempts to let her feelings be known in Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun.

    About the Anime

    IMG_20250106_123359.jpg

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun) is an anime series that premiered in the summer of 2014. It's a 12-episode anime that aired from July 7, 2014, to September 22, 2014. It was animated by Doga Kobo, and its genres are comedy and romance. Since it featured school life and manga, its themes are otaku culture and school. This was based on the 4-koma manga written and illustrated by Izumi Tsubaki.

    IMG_20250106_123413.jpg

Finally mustering enough courage to confess to the boy she liked, Sakura approached him after class. However, it didn't go according to her plan because as soon as she uttered the words that were supposed to convey her feelings to him, she messed up. She said she was a fan, which Nozaki misunderstood. This misunderstanding led to a revelation because it turns out he was actually a known shoujo manga artist. Thinking that Sakura was just expressing her appreciation to him as a mangaka, Nozaki gave her an autograph.

    IMG_20250106_123602.jpg

Sakura was both shocked and disappointed with how her confession turned out. Who would have thought that her crush was the mangaka of one of the shoujo manga she's reading? This misunderstanding led to another, then another, and another until one day she found herself helping Nozaki-kun as an assistant for his manga. Her help in Nozaki's manga somehow allowed her to spend time with him and know more about him. Despite how obvious she is in expressing her feelings, Nozaki still remains oblivious because even though he claims to be the spokesperson of girls' feelings, Nozaki himself is completely naive about love and relationships. However, Sakura intends not to give up on him as she is determined to make her feelings known to him. But can he notice it?

    IMG_20250106_124911.jpg

I somehow expected that it would end that way, though there's a part of me that was hoping that it would end in a more resolved manner. It was fun and entertaining, and honestly the comedy made me somehow forget the plot's supposed to be goal. But of 'course, I was quite disappointed on how it ended—I mean, is that it? Was their story supposed to end that way? Also, the romance part wasn't that much; it's more like comedy with the usual slice-of-life. The beginning was promising, but if you're looking for a really well-written plot, then it's best to steer clear of this anime.

    IMG_20250106_123647.jpg

Anyway, for their characters, I like how diverse they are. Like the usual romance anime, there are already obvious pairings of characters. Each pairing could potentially be the protagonist of their own romcom stories, but the pairing that frustrates me the most is the main one—Sakura and Nozaki. I thought that they would have at least a tidbit improvement on their characters—like Nozaki's obliviousness would lessen a notch, but it seems it worsened. He's good at analyzing other people—especially other girls—but it seems he can't see Sakura's intentions even though it's too obvious. Also, Sakura annoys me a bit because why can't she be straightforward and confess it directly to Nozaki? But I think she's being reasonable somehow because even I would be content being with the person I like rather than being honest and risking the friendship we've built... (yikes why do I sound like a hopeless romantic teenager? eekkk)

    IMG_20250106_131944.jpg

Moving on from that, although their art style is not that great, but it's nice enough for a romcom anime. The animation doesn't stand out that much, but it's decent to portray comedic gags that will entertain you and make you laugh. The bicycle part particularly stood out among them, and just thinking about that made me giggle. The amount of secondhand embarrassment I felt in that part was really something else, and that part indeed showed how eccentric Nozaki is and how insensitive he is when it comes to what Sakura feels.

    IMG_20250106_123702.jpg

Setting aside those mediocre aspects, one of the reasons why it's not that completely forgettable is the way it gave us a gist of what usually is the life of a mangaka. The way he struggles to draw something that's not his forte, to meet his grueling deadlines, and to make revisions that would pass his editor's liking—they portrayed it in a seemingly entertaining and lighthearted manner, but I think it's harder to handle in real life. Honestly, I'm not really fond of shoujo manga, but I really admire those mangaka who make them because I think it's really hard to make an interesting plot with engaging dialogues—especially if you're like Nozaki, who has no experience with romance.

    IMG_20250106_123724.jpg

Although its plot and art style weren't that impressive, its soundtrack somehow captivated me. Its opening song was particularly the one that I really like the most because the instrumentals in the beginning of it were catchy. I thought the lyrics would not be related to the anime, but upon watching its opening in its last episode, I realized how the lyrics really fit it well. If you analyze it closely, you will really understand that it's somehow a spoiler of the entire story, so ahahaha, jokes on me because I didn't realize it until I finished the anime. Unlike the funky opening song, its ending song was kinda laid-back and really cute. The voice of VAs did really match the personalities of the characters, and overall its soundtrack was nice and probably one of the things I like in this anime.

    IMG_20250106_123624.jpg

Overall, my personal rating for this anime is 8/10. It's an ideal anime if you just want to watch something that doesn't have a complicated and heavy plot. Also, it's entertaining and enjoyable to watch if you're into comedy and subtle romance. However, I wished there was at least a little improvement in Nozaki's awareness, but who knows? What if Nozaki really knows about Sakura's feelings, but he preferred to get to know her more first? I do really have a gut feeling that he somehow likes her unconsciously, and I think I'm not the only one who noticed this (but if I am, just don't mind this because I'm prolly just in my usual delusional fangirl state lol)

    IMG_20250106_123852.jpg

Also, like I said, steer clear if you're into a well-written romance plot because you can't really expect much from it. So if you're up for a lighthearted romance and enjoyable comedy, then you definitely need to try watching Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun.

Before I end this review, I gladly share with you its trailer, so—

  3. GEKKAN SHOUJO NOZAKI-KUN: BUENO… ¿EL REY DEL ROMANCE?/WELL… THE KING OF ROMANCE? [ESP-ENG]@melochacalie1569d

Hello illustrious young people, how was your day? After a long week of dealing with bosses, teachers, the people around you, sometimes it becomes monotonous and stressful, so, to improve the mood, I will talk to you of Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun.

Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun, (Goga Kobo Inc. 2014)

    RECAPITULEMOS/LET'S RECAP…

After all the time we've spent together, I think I can interpret Nozaki-kun's actions a bit now, still… every time Yumeno-sensei does things like this, it reminds me of that time… the day I met Yumeno-sensei. Nozaki-kun, that day when I panicked and was about to cry, thanks to him I was able to smile… You know Nozaki-kun, even if our relationship hasn't progressed… even if you don't realize it… thanks to him I fell in love with you, I enjoy my life much more.

    SU VALORACIÓN/YOUR ASSESSMENT…

Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun, or in Spain "Nozaki and his monthly magazine for girls" (because yes, you find it legal in editions ( ̄▽ ̄)), has its beginnings as a weekly manga of short chapters in 2011, given the acceptance so absurdly high that it had in Japan, an anime adaptation was made in 2014 of 12 chapters (plus 6 special chapters given its popularity ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭) produced by Doga Kobo Inc. (remember Himouto! Umaru- chan?, as they produced its second season []( ̄▽ ̄)* ), launching the already high popularity of the manga through the air, reaching the 60th position of the best-selling manga in Japan in 2015-2016, being a manga consolidated so far (year 2021) as one of the best comedy-romance manga broadcast in Japan (more things, less things, what I know is that it sells very well to be a chapter of 4 or 5 pages each ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭).

Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun, (Goga Kobo Inc. 2014)

    MI OPINIÓN/ MY OPINION…

Two things, one, Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun is purely a comedy-romance anime, and two, I have read his manga, but as I said, it has extremely short chapters, and, although it has a large number of chapters, this fact It's still a bit exasperating, but don't underestimate it, although I'm only going to mess with its anime, I still strongly recommend the manga, it's extremely entertaining, I'll explain why.

As usual in most of my recommendations, this is a very stylized anime with settings that are not lost despite not being important to the story, Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun, follows this parameter regarding his animation, he makes an excellent use of its vibrant color palette and bright tones, with a lot of detail, but without being artistic, so it's flexible enough to be used in its comedy, much like what happened with Wotaku ni koi wa's animation muzukashii, the character designs (Hori o seo, I can't choose my favorite づ ̄ 3 ̄)づ) are nice, and accompanied by the seiyus they exploited the strength of their construction, something very well done for the genre of this anime .

Speaking of its soundtrack, it is very energetic, despite the fact that the songs are few and do not have variations (they do not really need them), most of them are very strong, the opening is… it has something that I cannot describe that I love it, I think it's the selection of the rhythm and the instruments, it's one of those openings that stay in your head once you listen to them, I don't know if I'm explaining myself, the same thing happens with its ending, this kind of soundtrack is in very happy overall, so it's a very nice soundtrack that acts as a support for the anime.

Now, if we look at this anime objectively, it's not an anime with a big story (someone had to say it ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭), it's actually based on a high school girl named Chiyo Sakura, who on the first day of high school she meets Nozaki Umetarou, a tall and somewhat suspicious boy and falls in love with him, one or two years later, Sakura decides to confess, but she chooses her words wrong and this leads her to learn Nozaki's secret, who turns out to be a professional shoujo mangaka with a monthly serialization, given this situation, he begins to approach him and have new encounters, they become friends and Nozaki, despite being a very popular shoujo mangaka turns out to be quite clueless about himself, based on it, all the comedy of the anime is developed, because progress in their relationship never, there is more progress in the secondary couples, but in reality if you look closely, they follow the same line, so that leads their "story" towards a manga of comedy, which uses the “roman ce” as something comical in itself, so it is entertaining and very cool to watch.

Something that Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun has really done very well is to use the situational comedy resource, to implement the Japanese tsukomi resource, so it is not an anime that annoys after 1 or two episodes, and this balance is definitely thanks to their characters, Nozaki, the taciturn and serious boy who acts like a child and a hard-working adult at the same time, Sakura, the kind girl who is a bit clumsy, but very receptive and focused, Mikorin, a somewhat distant boy, but shy, Kashima, a girl with the personality of a prince, Hori, a responsible and reliable but at the same time intolerant older boy, Wakamatsu, a kind and pacifist boy, and Seo… well, Seo is Seo (there are no decent words to describe her, I can only say that he is the character that made me laugh the most づ ̄ 3 ̄)づ).

The secondary characters are relatively few, but they are very versatile, and despite the inconsistencies in them, they work, and not only do they work, they fit perfectly with each other, something that is difficult to do in cases like this, I mean, I've seen comedy animes with themes that carry the same line, and none do it so well, they always decide to force the story to be a romance, and, Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun, although it is a romance, he let his characters flow freely , I think it's their characters who give direction to the story and not vice versa, something I've seen in very few anime, it's brutal.

Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun, (Goga Kobo Inc. 2014)

    TERMINANDO/ ENDING…

Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun, is an anime that is worth it for how entertaining it can be, it moves fast and is not usually heavy, in my opinion, an anime that I recommend if you find yourself annoyed, tired or stressed, maybe not you like romance animes, but in this one its comedy is worth it, and if you watch it for romance, it's still pretty in certain parts, it doesn't go to one extreme or the other, a balanced anime in my opinion.
