Plot
The film begins with a view of our young protagonist's room. After drawing a butterfly, he opens the window so it can fly out and flutter around the city. We see the inhabitants of this gloomy, dark place with a neutral, colorless, and lifeless spirit. Our protagonist, Victor Van Dort, is about to marry the young and beautiful Victoria Everglot. This marriage was arranged by their parents, Victor's parents being newly rich thanks to the fortune they made from their fish business. Before talking about Corpse Bride, I want to confess that I am not a fan of Stop Motion animation. In fact, there was a time in my life when I came to detest this style of animation for certain absurd reasons. However, now that I have matured a bit in terms of how I view both feature films and the series I watched as a child, I cannot deny that there were several Stop Motion works that fascinated me at the time. I have already mentioned a couple of them in the past, and this time I will do so again with this film directed by Tim Burton.
When I learned that the people behind Corpse Bride were the same ones who produced A Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline, it was an obvious revelation. Both in the artistry and in the details and fluidity of the animation, you can see the ingenuity of the producers and creators of these Stop Motion works. These types of feature films are the only ones I've ever enjoyed with this style of animation. And it's not just thanks to Tim Burton, but also to the work of studios like Laika Entertainment. Obviously, what struck me the most at the time was that mix of horror with fantasy, comedy, and romance.

Es más, hubo una temporada en mi vida en la que llegué a detestar dicho estilo de animación por ciertos motivos absurdos. Sin embargo, ahora que he madurado un poco en cuanto a mi forma de ver tanto los largometrajes como las series que veía desde pequeño, no puedo negar que sí hubieron varias obras Stop Motion que me fascinaron en su momento. Cuando supe que los que estuvieron detrás de Corpse Bride son los mismo que produjeron A Nightmare Before Christmas y Coraline fue una obvia revelación. Tanto en el arte como en los detalles y la fluidez de la animación se puede percibir dicho ingenio de los productores y creadores de dichas obras Stop Motion. Este tipo de largometrajes son los únicos que llegué a disfrutar con este estilo de animación. Y no solo es gracias a Tim Burton, sino también al trabajo de estudios como Laika Entertainment. Obviamente, lo que más me llegó a impactar en su momento fue esa mezcla de terror con fantasía, comedia y romance.

All this is mixed with a touch of drama and dark humor that is very difficult to ignore.
But if we look more closely at the plot, we can notice certain nuances in terms of the era in which the story is set and other details about its main characters. Starting with the issue of class distinction in this fictional world inspired by the Victorian era. On the one hand, we have Victor Van Dort, the son of a family of fishermen who suddenly became rich, and on the other hand, we have Victoria Everglot, the daughter of cold aristocrats who only think of themselves. The theme of "being part of high society" is mentioned quite a bit in this story.
A pesar de las apariencias, no, no es una película de terror por si es lo que pensaban al llegar aquí. Corpse Bride es, aunque no lo creas, una historia de amor, solo que no es una historia típica que vemos ahora en Hollywood. Podría decirse que es una historia trágica de amor y traición, pero su mensaje final es de lo más puro y auténtico que se pueda encontrar. Por supuesto, tiene sus elementos sobrenaturales y fantásticos que la distinguen de cualquier otra película romántica de “Acción Real”. Por un lado tenemos a Víctor Van Dort que es hijo de una familia de pescadores que se volvieron ricos de repente y, por el otro lado, tenemos a Victoria Everglot que es hija de unos aristócratas fríos que solo piensan en sí mismos. El tema de “ser parte de la alta sociedad” es bastante mencionado en esta historia.

Even in high society, it is normal to see problems between privileged marriages and families. Disagreements, misunderstandings, and deceit that lead to alleged suicides or murders. This whole dark side of the "world of the living" is also perfectly portrayed in this film. Especially with characters as detestable as Lord Barkis Bittern, one of the worst antagonists I have ever known and hated in my entire life. As you may have noticed, it is curious that this film shows us this world as a dark, cold, and emotionless place.
Sumado al arreglo matrimonial de ambos personajes ya mencionados es algo que llama la atención debido a que esto se hacía en el pasado entre muchas familias y sociedades. Es normal que cosas como los sentimientos, el amor y el conocer a tu futura pareja son cosas que toma esta gente como algo absurdo y una completa pérdida de tiempo, sobre todo los Everglot con su mentalidad pragmática. La visión que tiene esta gente sobre el dinero y la posición social es algo que vemos en esta película como un total engaño. Y lo mejor es cómo nos revelan todo esto al final de una manera fascinante.
Y es que, incluso en la alta sociedad, es normal que veamos problemas entre matrimonios y familias privilegiadas. Desacuerdos, malentendidos y engaños que conducen a presuntos suicidios o asesinatos. Todo este lado oscuro del “mundo de los vivos” se nos muestra también de una manera perfecta en esta película. Sobre todo con personajes tan detestables como lo es Lord Barkis Bittern, de los peores antagonistas que he conocido y odiado en toda mi vida. Como ya notaron, es curioso que esta película nos muestra este mundo como un lugar oscuro, frío y sin emociones.

But after learning about her tragic story and death, it was impossible for me not to feel a certain empathy for her situation. Personally, I am fascinated by how Tim Burton manages to intertwine genres and emotions as varied as horror, comedy, romance, and deception.
Mientras que cuando nos presenta el Mundo de los Muertos vemos que es un lugar muy colorido y vivo, aunque suene irónico. Este contraste es lo que más me fascinó de Corpse Bride, en lo personal. Considero que esta visión del Inframundo es mucho más acertada a lo que uno se puede imaginar, si es que en realidad existiera un mundo así. Solo imagínate vivir en un mundo, después de muerto, donde no hay reglas ni distinción de clases sociales ni nada por el estilo. Es fascinante si me lo preguntan, pero a la vez causa cierta incomodidad al pensar en cómo han terminado dichas personas que se encuentran en este lugar.
Aquí vamos con el caso de nuestra famosa protagonista, la Novia Muerta, Emily. Al principio no les voy a negar que me dió una primera impresión de terror y desagrado. Pero luego de conocer su historia trágica y muerte me fue imposible no sentir cierta empatía por su situación. Imaginarse que una persona haya terminado engañada de tal manera que hasta haya perdido la vida es algo que te quita esa sonrisa que pones al momento de escuchar una de sus canciones o chistes negros en esta película. Personalmente me fascina cómo Tim Burton logra entremezclar géneros y emociones tan variados como lo son el terror, la comedia, el romance y el engaño.

In this regard, I must admit that the relationship we see develop between Victor and Emily throughout the film causes so many mixed emotions that it is difficult to convey in words. I have seen that many people did not like the ending of this film.
But I was fascinated by it because of everything it represents. Emily's decision, Victor's reunion with Victoria, and the final scene are a clear sign that life is not always what one wants it to be. Sometimes you have to decide to let go of what you love most for the sake of the other person. Not everything is fair in real life, and seeing this reflected in this film is the best thing. It's like that "bittersweet pill" that makes you reflect on everything you've done with your life and your past relationships. That thing you loved and let go of, for whatever reason, freed you in one way or another.
Solo un genio como él sabe que hay una relación entre ambos polos que, al juntarlos, se complementan de una manera fascinante. Esta historia de la Novia Muerta es trágica, pero termina de una forma alegre y a la vez incómoda por el hecho de que fue por un simple error de nuestro protagonista que logró librarse al fin. En cuanto a esto, debo de admitir que la relación que vemos desarrollarse entre Victor y Emily a lo largo de la película causa tantas emociones encontradas que es difícil de transmitirlo con palabras. He visto que a muchos no les gustó el final de esta película.
Pero a mí me fascinó debido a todo lo que representa. La decisión que toma Emily, el reencuentro de Víctor con Victoria y la escena final es una señal clara de que la vida no siempre es como uno desea. A veces hay que decidir soltar y dejar ir lo que más uno ama por el bien de la otra persona. No todo es justo en la vida real y ver esto reflejado en esta película es lo mejor. Es como ese “trago agridulce” que te pone a reflexionar sobre todo lo que has hecho con tu vida y tus relaciones pasadas. Eso que amaste y dejaste ir, sea por lo que sea, te liberó de alguna u otra manera.

Anyway, apart from being a musical, because it is, this film has a perfect mix of genres that is definitely very entertaining. En fin, aparte de ser un musical, porque lo es, esta película posee una mezcla perfecta de géneros que definitivamente entretiene bastante. Vale la pena verla, sobre todo porque no dura ni hora y media, así que puedes echarle un vistazo en cualquier momento. Ah, y en cuanto a las canciones que tiene y todo eso no voy a negar que sí hubieron algunas que me fascinaron bastante. Sobre todo el solo de piano de Víctor o la historia de Emily. Así como no soy muy fan del Stop Motion, tampoco soy muy fan de los musicales. Pero esta película es una de esas grandiosas excepciones que valen la pena ver.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual de Corpse Bride. Tanto Tim Burton como Mike Johnson hicieron un gran trabajo, sobre todo al momento de animarlo todo con Stop Motion. La fluidez es excelente para la época en la que salió, al igual que sus detalles y el contraste de los fondos con la paleta de colores fríos y variados. El estilo y arte gótico y distintivo de Burton se puede percibir en toda obra, especialmente en el diseño de los personajes. Los efectos visuales, al igual que los de sonido, son muy destacables. Pero lo que definitivamente se lleva el premio es su banda sonora gracias al gran Danny Elfman. En fin, aquí les dejo esta película por si les interesa.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance, drama y fantasía.
