Synopsis: After getting lost in a vast forest in western Ireland, Mina, a young artist, finds shelter, but must deal with a strange reality that keeps her trapped with three strangers, all of whom are watched daily by mysterious nocturnal creatures.

Movie debuts are always a kind of "trial by fire" for any filmmaker, especially when expectations are exceedingly high on certain occasions. In the case of this movie, we're talking about the cinematic debut of Ishana Shyamalan, daughter of director (screenwriter and producer) M. Night Shyamalan. The ideas she brought to the movie are quite interesting (and it's worth mentioning that she was also responsible, along with writer A.M. Shine, for writing the screenplay for this project), but the entire package here is better than the gift.

Set within an aesthetically interesting setting (and which, in a way, manages to be effectively exploited to convey to viewers a real dimension of the cinematography in which everything unfolds), the script begins with relatively minimalist touches (which are reinforced by a production that typically had a low budget to be shot as a feature film). Up to a point, it's functional, but the entire plot takes too long to gel, and by the time it actually did, I was too bored to care.

Amidst characters who are completely uninteresting from the moment they're first introduced (something that doesn't change throughout the plot... in fact, some characters become even more irritating), the flimsy plot attempts to present itself to the audience as a stupidly intriguing mystery (which relies on the idea that all four characters must be "locked" in a room at night - where they are forbidden to leave to avoid being killed - while being watched by mysterious creatures), but it's actually very far from that.

There are few suspenseful scenes, and no aspect of terror or horror is heightened (even though the script persistently attempts to do so, always relying on its "dark side" to "embrace" the audience). There are no situations where any degree of dread is imminent; what exists are only the promises that the characters are being threatened by creatures that seem to communicate (and act) through "coordinated codes" to keep them in a "private prison." Amidst all this, the investigative aspect is gradually eroded, until it is almost completely lost in the plot.

Riddled with loose ends, the plot fails to untangle its own "knots." Opting for resolutions without major logical explanations (which in a way makes sense when the whole “big” mystery is revealed... even so, even within the surreal aspect of the script, the fiction created in the plot could have been more “palatable” within the mystical and fantastical proposal that was constructed), the film begins and ends with a good dramatic connection and good touches on “local culture folklore”, but which could have been better used than they really are.

Dakota Fanning leads a boring cast (including herself, who, despite being a good actress, is apathetic here with her one-sided character, as poorly constructed as the other characters), who don't seem to have the slightest connection with one another. To be fair, the whole problem here (in terms of performances) isn't just the cast's, but mainly the script itself, which lacks a decent material base for them to work with. There's no way to deliver something more tense if the plot itself doesn't support it, but the cast helps fragment this "desire."

This project's greatest asset is having a truly attractive and inviting setting, which is undoubtedly a very creative part of the movie. If this technical aspect is stripped away, there's almost nothing interesting left in what's seen on screen. The play of light and color, which enhances this pseudo-"tale" (which, by the way, is very reminiscent of those campfire gatherings in the middle of nowhere in vast forests), is another positive point, but it only fuels the idea (and the intention) of creating something grand, but it never arrives. Other technical aspects are merely quite irrelevant.

There's no doubt that this is a well-intentioned work, and even though The Watchers was a project where the weight of its debut added pressure to its execution, it's impossible not to notice the lack of "identity" that permeates almost the entire movie. It's literally as if the daughter is copying the techniques she learned, or simply admires, in her own father's work (and it's fine to follow references, but not without incorporating something unique from your own repertoire, even if it's still under construction). A significant disappointment.

Los debuts cinematográficos siempre son una especie de "prueba de fuego" para cualquier cineasta, especialmente cuando las expectativas son excesivamente altas en ciertas ocasiones. En el caso de esta película, hablamos del debut cinematográfico de Ishana Shyamalan, hija del director (guionista y productor) M. Night Shyamalan. Las ideas que aportó a la película son bastante interesantes (y cabe mencionar que también fue responsable, junto con el escritor A.M. Shine, de escribir el guion de este proyecto), pero el conjunto completo es mejor que el regalo.

Ambientada en un entorno estéticamente interesante (y que, en cierto modo, se aprovecha eficazmente para transmitir al espectador una dimensión real de la cinematografía donde se desarrolla todo), el guion comienza con toques relativamente minimalistas (que se ven reforzados por una producción que, por lo general, contaba con un presupuesto bajo para rodarse como largometraje). Hasta cierto punto, es funcional, pero la trama completa tarda demasiado en cuajar, y para cuando finalmente lo hizo, estaba demasiado aburrido como para preocuparme.

Entre personajes que resultan completamente aburridos desde el primer momento (algo que no cambia a lo largo de la trama... de hecho, algunos personajes se vuelven aún más irritantes), la endeble trama intenta presentarse al público como un misterio absurdamente intrigante (que se basa en la idea de que los cuatro personajes deben estar "encerrados" en una habitación por la noche - de la que tienen prohibido salir para evitar ser assinados - mientras son observados por criaturas misteriosas), pero en realidad dista mucho de serlo.

Hay pocas escenas de suspense, y no se intensifica ningún aspecto de terror ni horror (aunque el guion insistentemente lo intenta, recurriendo siempre a su lado oscuro para cautivar al público). No hay situaciones donde el miedo sea inminente; lo único que existe son las promesas de que los personajes se ven amenazados por criaturas que parecen comunicarse (y actuar) mediante códigos coordinados para mantenerlos en una prisión privada. En medio de todo esto, el aspecto investigativo se erosiona gradualmente, hasta perderse casi por completo en la trama.

Plagada de cabos sueltos, la trama no logra desenredar sus propios nudos. Optando por resoluciones sin mayores explicaciones lógicas (lo cual en cierta forma tiene sentido cuando se desvela todo el “gran” misterio… aún así, incluso dentro del aspecto surrealista del guion, la ficción creada en la trama pudo haber sido más “digerible” dentro de la propuesta mística y fantástica que se construyó), la película empieza y termina con una buena conexión dramática y buenos toques de “folclore de la cultura local”, pero que pudieron haber sido mejor aprovechados de lo que realmente son.

Dakota Fanning lidera un reparto aburrido (incluida ella misma, quien, a pesar de ser una buena actriz, se muestra apática con su personaje parcial, tan mal construido como los demás), que no parecen tener la más mínima conexión entre sí. Siendo justos, el problema aquí (en cuanto a las actuaciones) no reside solo en el reparto, sino principalmente en el propio guion, que carece de una base material decente con la que trabajar. Es imposible ofrecer algo más tenso si la trama no lo sustenta, pero el reparto ayuda a fragmentar este "deseo".

La mayor baza de este proyecto reside en su ambientación realmente atractiva y acogedora, que sin duda es un aspecto muy creativo de la película. Si se prescinde de este aspecto técnico, no queda casi nada interesante en lo que se ve en pantalla. El juego de luz y color, que realza este pseudo-cuento (que, por cierto, recuerda mucho a esas reuniones alrededor de fogatas en medio de la nada en vastos bosques), es otro punto positivo, pero solo alimenta la idea (y la intención) de crear algo grandioso, pero nunca lo logra. Otros aspectos técnicos son simplemente irrelevantes.

No cabe duda de que se trata de una obra bien intencionada, y aunque Los vigilantes fue un proyecto donde el peso de su debut presionó su ejecución, es imposible no notar la falta de identidad que impregna casi toda la película. Es literalmente como si la hija copiara las técnicas que aprendió, o simplemente admira, en la obra de su padre (y está bien seguir referencias, pero no sin incorporar algo único de tu propio repertorio, aunque aún esté en desarrollo). Una decepción considerable.

Estreias no mundo do cinema sempre são uma espécie de “prova de fogo” para qualquer cineasta, em especial, quando há uma expectativa acima do normal em algumas determinadas ocasiões. No caso deste filme, estamos falando sobre o debut cinematográfico de Ishana Shyamalan, filha do diretor (roteirista e também produtor) M. Night Shyamalan. As ideias que ela jogou no filme são bem interessantes (e vale à pena mencionar que ela também foi a responsável, junto com o escritor A.M. Shine, por escrever o roteiro deste projeto), mas toda embalagem aqui é melhor do que o presente.

Ambientando dentro de um cenário que é esteticamente interessante (e que de certa maneira consegue ser explorado com eficiência para entregar aos telespectadores uma dimensão real da cinematografia onde tudo acontece), o roteiro começa com toques relativamente minimalistas (que são reforçados por uma produção que tipicamente teve um tipo de orçamento baixo para ser filmado enquanto um longa-metragem), e até um certo momento é funcional, mas toda a trama demora muito até plugar, e quanto isso de fato realmente aconteceu, eu já estava entediado para me importar.

Em meio a personagens completamente desinteressantes desde o primeiro momento em são apresentados (algo que não muda ao longo de todo o desenvolvimento da trama... aliás, alguns personagens se tornam ainda mais irritantes), a trama frágil tenta se mostrar ao público como um mistério estupidamente intrigante (que recaí sobre a ideia de que todos os quatro personagens precisam ficar “enclausurados” em uma sala durante à noite - onde são proibidos se sair para evitar que sejam mortos - enquanto são vigiados por criaturas misteriosas), mas está realmente muito longe disso.

Há poucas cenas de suspense, e nenhum aspecto de terror ou horror é intensificado (mesmo que o roteiro insista nas tentativas de fazer isso apostando sempre no seu “lado escuro” para “abraçar” o público). Não há situações onde todo teor de pavor é iminente, o que existe são apenas as promessas de que os personagens estão sendo ameaçados pelas criaturas que parecem se comunicar (e agir) através de “códigos coordenados” para mantê-los dentro de um “cárcere privado”. Em meio a tudo isso, o aspecto investigativo vai sendo escoado, até quase se perder por completo na trama.

Cheio de pontas narrativas soltas, a trama não consegue desatar os seus próprios “nós”. Optando por resoluções sem maiores explicações lógicas (o que de certa maneira faz sentido quando todo o “grande” mistério é revelado... mesmo assim, ainda que dentro do aspecto surreal do roteiro, a ficção criada na trama poderia ter sido mais “palatável” dentro da própria proposta mística e fantasiosa que foi construída), o filme começa e termina com uma boa conexão dramática e bons toques sobre “folclore de cultura local”, mas que poderiam ter sido melhor aproveitados do que realmente são.

Dakota Fanning lidera um elenco chato (incluindo a ela mesma, que apesar de ser uma boa atriz, aqui está apática com sua personagem unilateral e tão mal construída quanto os outros personagens), que não demonstram ter o mínimo de entrosamento entre eles mesmos. Justiça seja feita, o problema todo aqui (em termos de performance) não é apenas do elenco, mas principalmente do próprio roteiro, que não tem uma base material decente para eles trabalharem. Não há como entregar algo mais tenso se a própria trama não favorece isso, mas o elenco ajuda a fragmentar esse “desejo”.

O grande trunfo desse projeto é ter uma ambientação justamente atrativa e convidativa, que sem dúvidas, é uma parte muito criativa do filme. Se esse aspecto técnico for retirado do projeto, não sobra quase nada de interessante sobre o que é visto na tela. O jogo de luzes e cores favorecendo esse pseudo “conto” (que aliás, lembra muito aquelas reuniões à beira de uma fogueira no meio do nada em grandes florestas) é outro ponto positivo, mas apenas alimenta a ideia (e a intenção) de fazer algo grandioso, mas que nunca chega. Outros aspectos técnicos são meramente bem irrelevantes.

Não há dúvidas de que estamos diante de um trabalho bem intencionado, e ainda que Os Observadores tenha sido um projeto onde o peso da estreia trouxe uma pressão adicional a execução do mesmo, é impossível não perceber a falta de “identidade” que orbita o filme quase que por inteiro. Literalmente, é como se a filha estivesse copiando as técnicas que aprendeu, ou que simplesmente admira, no trabalho do seu próprio pai (e está tudo bem seguir referências, mas não sem inserir algo exclusivo do seu próprio repertório, ainda que em construção). Uma decepção muito considerável.

Hello, anime lovers!

I hope everyone is doing well. Today I bring you a recommendation and review of an anime I watched about 3 months ago and introspectively liked quite a bit. It's pretty short with only 8 episodes, but it's set to have multiple seasons.

This anime is called Devil May Cry and is based on an anime game series of the same name. While it certainly doesn't faithfully follow the Lore of the game, it can be somewhat understood as a reinterpretation of Dante's story.

This series follows the story of Dante, a young, handsome, eccentric and rather crazy demon hunter. Free-spirited, but prone to boredom, Dante enjoys fighting and hunting demons, but despite his carefree attitude, Dante hides a traumatic past marked by loss of mother and twin brotherand denial of his true self. The reality is that Dante was born from the union of a woman named Eva and the great demon knight Sparda, this demonic heritage is what allows Dante to face demons without fear, with two guns in each hand and extraordinary physical abilities Dante kills demons left and right, to whom he has a deep hatred.

Dante lived his life as a mercenary and demon hunter, having no idea that soon his whole world and everything he believed in would change, after being drawn into a global conspiracy when a robbery in the Vatican threatens to unleash the apocalypse.Without knowing it, very powerful demons, whose power made it very difficult for them to cross the barrier that divided earth and hell, learned to transport their consciousness to the human world, in the hope of escaping the hell where they were imprisoned. Hand in hand with a White Rabbit the size of a human and with a macabre appearance that unleashes massacres in search of Dante and the amulet that hangs around his neck.

Dante not only has to deal with the White Rabbit and his band of demons but also with the government who apparently knows of the existence of the demons (existence hidden from the public) who has a group of demon hunters led by the cruel, manipulative and cunning Vice President of the U.S. who runs the government from the shadows and through the President of the United States who serves more in my opinion as the “nice” face in command.

It all comes down to hunting and being hunted, while sooner rather than later the gates of hell are opening wider and wider and the most powerful demons are ready to make their appearance. Meanwhile, of course, the government makes its own plans, revealing that sometimes humans are worse than demons. Dante must learn to accept his heritage if he is to fight his enemies and save what little he has left in the world, face uncomfortable truths and fight even those he loves.

The demons came to earth and want to stay because their home is a real hell from which everyone wants to escape.

Dante is a quintessential anti-hero who just wants to leave the past behind, and the White Rabbit is a crazed and enigmatic terrorist who seeks to unite the human world with the demonic one, will they both achieve what they set out to do?

I really liked the character of the White Rabbit as the representation of chaos and the breakdown of “order”, his madness and motivations are more of a critique than an insane desire for domination and his name to my mind is the abandonment of all logic as well as the descent into an unknown world, like the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. The series also touches on issues such as immigration and other social problems in the form of a demonic invasion.

Now, although the series takes elements from the manga and the games, as I said in the beginning, it deviates from the canon to tell a story of its own. For those who haven't played the game or read the manga I don't think it's a problem. The animation is very good and the battles are visually amazing. It should be added that for some the series may be a bit grotesque because it has sequences with a lot of blood, but I think they add an excellent touch to the story.

Espero que todos estén bien. Hoy les traigo una recomendación y reseña de un anime que vi hace como unos 3 meses y que en introspectiva me gustó bastante. Es bastante corta con tan solo 8 capítulos, pero está programada para que tenga múltiples temporadas.

Este anime se llama Devil May Cry y está basado en una serie de juegos animados del mismo nombre. Aunque ciertamente no sigue fielmente el Lore del juego, se puede entender un poco como una reinterpretación de la historia de Dante.

Esta serie sigue la historia de Dante, un joven, guapo, excéntrico y bastante alocado cazador de demonios. De espíritu libre, pero con tendencia al aburrimiento, Dante disfruta de las peleas y cazar demonios, pero a pesar de su despreocupada actitud, Dante esconde un pasado traumático marcado por la pérdida de su madre y hermano gemelo y la negación de su verdadero ser. La realidad es que Dante nació de la unión de una mujer de nombre Eva y el gran caballero demonio Sparda, dicha herencia demoniaca es lo que le permite a Dante hacerle frente sin temor a los demonios, con dos pistolas en cada mano y extraordinarias habilidades físicas Dante asesina demonios a diestra y siniestra, a quienes les tiene un profundo odio.

Dante vivía su vida como mercenario y cazador de demonios, sin tener idea de que pronto su mundo entero y todo lo que él creía cambiaría, tras verse arrastrado a una conspiración global cuando un robo en el vaticano amenaza con desatar el apocalipsis. Dante no solo tiene que lidiar con el Conejo Blanco y su banda de demonios sino también con el gobierno que aparentemente sabe de la existencia de los demonios (existencias ocultas al público) quienes cuenta con un grupo de cazadores de demonios dirigidos por el cruel, manipulador y astuto vicepresidente de EE. UU, quien maneja el gobierno desde las sombras y a través del presidente de los Estados Unidos quien funge más desde mi opinión como la cara “agradable” en el mando.

Todo se reduce a cazar y a ser cazado, mientras más pronto que tarde las puertas del infierno se abren cada vez más y los demonios más poderosos están listos para hacer su aparición. Mientras, por supuesto, el gobierno hace sus propios planes, revelando que a veces los humanos son peores que los demonios. Dante deberá a aprender a aceptar su herencia si quiere luchar contra sus enemigos y salvar lo poco que le queda en el mundo, enfrentar verdades incómodas y luchar incluso contra quienes ama.

Los demonios llegaron a la tierra y quieren quedarse porque su hogar es un verdadero infierno del que todos quieren escapar.

Dante es un antihéroe por excelencia que solo quiere dejar atrás el pasado, y el Conejo Blanco es un terrorista enloquecido y enigmático que busca unir el mundo humano con el demoniaco, ¿ambos lograrán lo que se proponen?

Me gustó mucho el personaje del Conejo Blanco como la representación del caos y la ruptura del “orden”, su locura y motivaciones son más una crítica que un deseo insano de dominación y su nombre a mi parecer es el abandono de toda lógica así como el descenso a un mundo desconocido, como el conejo blanco de Alicia en el país de las maravillas. La serie también toca temas como la inmigración y otros problemas sociales desde la forma de una invasión demoniaca.

Ahora bien, aunque la serie toma elementos del manga y los juegos, como dije en un inicio, se desvía del canon para contar una historia propia. Para quienes no han jugado el juego o leído el manga no creo que sea un problema. La animación es muy buena y las batallas son visualmente increíbles. Cabe agregar que para algunos la serie puede ser algo grotesca porque tiene secuencias con mucha sangre, pero creo que le dan un toque excelente a la historia.

I finally got to watch the sequel to Happy Gilmore 2, which premiered on Netflix on July 25th. It's caused a lot of debate among audiences and critics, and I've got my own thoughts to share today. Like all Adam Sandler movies, it's a Happy Madison Productions film, and it's rated PG-13, which means you're in for some dark humor and a ton of cameos.

Happy Gilmore 2 ¿Un Hole-in-One o un Golpe Fallido?

Finalmente pude ver la secuela de "Happy Gilmore 2", se estrenó el 25 de julio en Netflix y a originado opiniones divididas entre la audiencia y la comunidad de críticos, yo tengo mis opiniones y hoy se las comparto. Como todas las películas de Adam Sandler es una producción de Happy Madison Productions, está catalogada como una comedia deportiva PG-13 lo que garantiza humor algo negro y mucho pero muchos cameos.

As someone who grew up watching Sandler's early movies, I'm pretty satisfied with what this sequel offers. It's goofy, harmless humor that's typical of 90s comedy—the kind with burps, farts, slapstick violence, quotes from other characters, and, of course, a lot of double-entendres. It'll get a laugh out of you here and there, but that's about it.

Como un espectador de las primera película de Sandler puedo decir que estoy satisfecho con lo que esta secuela ofrece, es un humor tonto pero inofensivo, típico de la comedia de los años 90, esa que incluía eructos, flatulencias, golpes repentinos que desencadenaba golpizas, frases alusivas a otros personajes y por supuesto mucho doble sentido. Esto te puede sacar una risa aquí y allá pero nada más que eso.

It makes sense that it's so similar to the first film because it's literally a continuation. Happy, the main character, has a family, five kids, became a legend, and earned a ton of money from golf. But after his wife dies in an accident, he spirals into alcoholism and loses his fortune. When his youngest daughter gets a chance to study ballet at a prestigious school, he needs to find a way to pay for it, which forces him to return to golf. Getting back in shape and back in the game is a tough road for him.

Es entendible que sea muy parecida a la primera película, porque es literalmente una continuación donde Happy el protagonista formó una familia, tiene 5 hijos, se hizo legendario y ganó mucho dinero con el golf, pero por un accidente su esposa muere lo que le hace sumergirse en el alcohol y perder toda su fortuna, pero su hija menor tiene una oportunidad de estudiar ballet en una de las escuelas más prestigiosas pero cuesta mucho dinero, eso le hace volver al golf, pero el proceso de recuperar su forma y juego es difícil.

The movie tries to fit in with the modern trend of bringing back older stories, so it's "the same, but different," but it really just feels like a bunch of fan service from start to finish. I personally think the story has enough new elements to feel fresh, but maybe that's just my nostalgic side talking. The cameos are good, which I was hoping for—Eminem's is great, but Post Malone's left a lot to be desired.

Esta historia busca adherirse al concepto que algunos usan hoy en día con las historias que regresan después de muchos años, es lo mismo, pero diferente, pero resulta ser un fan service por donde se lo vea. Personalmente creo que la historia tiene suficientes componentes para sentirse como algo renovado, pero quizás es mi yo del pasado que extrañaba ver algo de comedia de este tipo, pero los cameos son buenos, es algo que esperaba, el de Eminem es muy bueno pero el de Post Malone dejó mucho que desear.

Even though I got some good laughs out of it, the movie still feels like just another Netflix movie. I have a problem with the platform; I feel like a lot of their films are randomly made and just try to be good, and unfortunately, Happy Gilmore 2 falls into that category. It was a fun, nostalgic experience for me, but for a lot of people, it might feel empty and lacking in spark—especially if you haven't seen the first one and don't understand the humor of that era.

Aunque la película me sacó varias carcajadas, igual no deja de sentirse como una película más de Netflix, personalmente tengo este problema con esta plataforma, siento mucha de sus películas hechas al azar esforzándose solo por ser buenas, y lamentablemente Happy Gilmore 2 llega sentirse de esa manera. Aunque no deja de ser una experiencia nostálgica divertida para mi, quizás para muchos parezca vacía y carente de chispa, eso les pasara si no vieron la primera, y verla ahora sera mas dificil si no entiendes el humor de esa época.

This has to be the most laid back movie on forgiveness, faith and love I have watched. Even behind the screen, being the audience, I felt the whole message. I caught the message. Honestly, if I could continually find movies like this, I won’t mind. 

The Shack is an American faith-based movie directed by Stuart Hazeldine based on the 2007 novel of the same name. It follows the story of Mackenzie Phillips (Sam Worthington) and his deep rooted anger towards God after losing his youngest daughter, Missy (Amélie Eve), to the cold blooded hands of death because of a serial killer. Mack deals with grief and sadness the months before he receives a letter in his mail box signed by a “Papa” which happens to be his wife’s nickname for God. The note invites him to come to the very shack that holds his greatest pain and memories of loss. And Mack, out of his anger decides to go finish off who ever is playing this twisted game with him. However, what Mack finds isn’t a killer. Rather, he meets a trio unlike he ever imagined. 

I saw this movie’s trailer around 2020. I kept telling myself I would see it and never did. Now I wonder, with where I was then and who I was, would I have caught the message as good as I did now? Would it have stayed with me till this long? Maybe or maybe not. The fact remains I have seen it and the most beautiful part of it is how it’s centered on my theme of the year: Healing. 

I felt so many things watching this movie but each and every time, I had to stall my reaction. Each and every time when I would ask myself, “What will Papa say here?” And each and every time, Papa says the right things. I was a bit skeptical by the character they used here. I first thought, is this the Ariana Grande propaganda of God being a woman? But then, I’m quickly reminded when Papa takes the form of a Man that God will take whatever form he needs to make one feel comfortable. I have no idea how to explain it here without sounding deeply religious so, I’ll skip that part. 

The illustrations given in the movie was filled with so much wisdom. For example, when Sarayu (Sumire) took Mack to the garden that was a “beautiful mess”. It was so profound seeing such a place being referred to as “Us”. We are beautiful messes. 

When Mack had an encounter with Sophia, I had the answer I had been looking for to the question I have been asking myself for a while: 

Why does God let bad things happen to good people if He really is all powerful? Why can’t He stop these evil people from destroying lives?

The illustration used to give an answer broke my heart as much as it answered my question. It all made sense and honestly, I can’t look at people the same way again. Pondering on that answer given by Sophia made me realise truly what the Book of Proverbs is in the Bible. 

Now, this is a faith-based movie and not meant for everyone. However, it is centered on things many people struggle with which is sadness, grief, trauma and anger. 

One other character that struck me and further illustrated the importance of forgiveness (not just a person this time but oneself) is Kate. Kate (Megan Charpentier) blamed herself for Missy’s death and as such, she pulled away from Mack, her father who never blamed her. This has so much meaning to me because I saw what I did when I felt guilt for something and pulled away from my Creator. That was in so many ways comforting and it mended something deep within me I had failed to acknowledge. Also, when Kate blamed herself, she projected on Mack causing a rift in their relationship. I think we all do that. 

One further illustration that I found quite interesting was the scene at the Lake when Mack found himself drowning. That was a message for what it’s worth to whoever believed. And I do. So, I totally understood what it was all about. 

This movie is so beautiful of itself especially given the message it carries. Many people won’t understand it and may even speak against it (I saw some very critical reviews based on logic of course, missing the vital part of the film) but it is a solid 10/10 for me. The actors, especially Mack, carried their parts as best as they could. I really liked Mack. He always had this clueless look on his face that made him seem adorable. I guess we have the actor to thank for that. 

Would I recommend this movie? To every faith-filled believer I would. Like I said, it’s not for everyone. 

Hola amigos, aquí les comparto una reseña nueva: Un Viaje a la Sobriedad, una película un poco pesada por el tema que abarca: la sobriedad. No sé si les ha pasado, pero logran un nivel de empatía con obras que tocan temas de traumas, abuso, violencia y adicciones. Esta no es una película que ves para entretenerte y ya, sí que la ves para evaluar o comprender cómo se abordan los temas. El título de la película nos da todas las pistas que necesitamos. Pero, iniciemos este viaje.

SINOPSIS:

Un viaje a la sobriedad es literalmente un filme que explora el camino de rehabilitación que lleva Rona, nuestra protagonista. Mientras está en su viaje, Rona vuelve a casa con su madre, trata de conseguir nuevo empleo, hacer vida social y conectar con su padre. Sin embargo, el viaje no es lineal y la historia tampoco, enfrenta muchos retos. Y hay varios saltos en el tiempo que nos detallan cómo llegó al lugar donde está, los momentos más traumáticos y por supuesto su lucha por recuperarse.

La película revela cómo es dar ese paso hacia la sobriedad. Y te llenas de muchas emociones al ver que es un camino lleno de soledad. Rona enfrentará a sus demonios una y otra vez mientras aprende a conocerse de nuevo.

Estética

A ver, esta es una película que tiene muchas sutilezas en la grabación que destacan, por ejemplos los planos abiertos, los movimientos de la cámara en los momentos más difíciles, el silencio presente y los colores. Todo forma parte del concepto, de la experiencia.

Algo que me llamó la atención de la cinta es que arranca con una leyenda sobre las focas. Lo cual nos señala la importancia de la narración y por supuesto del animal escogido. Es acaso ¿Rona una foca, o se siente así? Mientras avanza la historia llegas a olvidar lo que se te presentó al principio. Pero eso puede ser lo que le da todo el sentido al final.

La narración visual está intrínsecamente enlazada a nuestra protagonista. Los colores, las escenas, y hasta los vacíos de información cuentan algo.

LA HISTORIA:

La vida no es una fiesta electrónica, nos deja claro esta historia. Rona tenía una vida muy diferente en Londres, un apartamento, amor, trabajo y amigos. Pero vuelve a casa en una zona bastante fría en las Islas Orcadas para comenzar de cero pero esta vez ya no cuenta con muchas personas a su alrededor. La sobriedad no es la meta sino un paso para abrazar la realidad.

Esta cinta esta basada en el libro de una periodista llamada Amy Liprot. Desconozco qué tanto de verdad o qué tan apegada está al libro, sí me da curiosidad leer el relato completo. Pero el filme es una belleza. Algo que me gusta mucho de la narración es que a pesar de tener un ritmo lento, te envuelve. Te imaginas cómo vive Rona, cómo podrías hacerlo tu en su lugar y aguantarías tanto.

Si desde el comienzo sientes que la soledad es un elemento clave en la vida de Rona. Luego llega al clímax cuando ella se encierra unos meses en una casita dentro de una isla en la que su vecino más cercano es el océano y sus pensamientos. Es allí donde conoceremos la dinámica de una persona que todos los días elige el camino de la sobriedad.

Rona se me hace una mujer muy valiente y está interpretada por la bellísima Saoirse Ronan, quien se me hace una de las mejores actrices de los últimos años. Fue por verla a ella en el flyer que decidí ver la película y no me arrepiento.

Una vez vean la cinta descubrirán porqué Rona es muy cercana a la naturaleza y los animales. Su relato se siente homogéneo junto a ellos.

PRIVILEGIOS

Me sorprende de sobremanera cómo los europeos tienen acceso a tantas ayudas que sería irrazonable no hablar del privilegio. Y sí, la cinta trata de apegarse a una realidad muy cruda como la rehabilitación pero duele ver cómo existen tantos programas que pueden ayudar a las personas a salir de esos estados mientras que eso no sucede mucho en LATAM. No puedo decir que no existen esos programas porque pecaría de mentirosa. Pero sé que no son tan accesibles para muchos.

Rona romantiza su proceso de rehabilitación no para enmascarar verdades sino para sobrellevarlas. Y eso también puede llegar a ser un privilegio. Tener la posibilidad de aislarte de todos y todo para centrarte en tu recuperación debería ser una prioridad. Así que la cinta da inicio a una conversación incómoda sobre el tema porque sí en pleno 2025, con toda la información disponible hay miles de personas presa de adicciones que no se atreven a pedir ayuda. Y el contexto social de aquí es muy diferente al de allá.

La recuperación es un privilegio del que muchos no hablan. ¿Qué sucede si otros dependen de ti? ¿Si se hace insostenible la recuperación y el trabajo? Hacer caso omiso parece ser la orden del día. Me da mucha tristeza que algunos no lo logren pero me deja la reflexión respecto al tema y las aristas que se desprenden del mismo.

CONCLUSIÓN

Si te gustan las historias con propósito esta peli es para ti. Pero si no se te da bien el ritmo lento de los eventos, entender la narración por partes y temas como el alcoholismo, esta historia no es para ti. A mí me gustó muchísimo, la disfruté y pude conectar emocionalmente con la historia de Rona. De hecho se me hizo muy personal porque conozco a unos cuantos amigos con este tipo de problemas. 😔 Ven la vida a través de un vidrio empañado de sustancias que les hace vivir una realidad alterada.

There are movies that I’ve come to love simply because of how wholesome these movies are. Not underdone or overdone. Just right. Hitting all the notes as they are supposed to be hit, and sending the message home. One of those very wholesome tales I will be sharing today with the most amazing members of the Cine TV community.

Green Book (2018)

It’s the early sixties, and an Italian American Bouncer by the name of Tony Lip searches for employment while his previous job is closed for renovations. Incidentally, an African American pianist by the name Don Shirley is in need of a driver for his eight-week concert tour through the Midwest and Deep South. Because of the stellar recommendations Tony has, Don hires him, and they begin the tour.

This movie, directed by Peter Farrelly, which is based on a true story, tells the tale of this pianist and his driver, and the various ways they navigate the Deep South in a time when racism is still very much the order of the day. Torn between two worlds, these two face complexities and a relationship dynamic that can only come borne out of suffering and a first-hand experience of what it means to not entirely fit in.

I said this movie is wholesome, not because it doesn’t tell hard truths or it isn’t a hard watch at different points, but because of the unique and rather fragile way this story is told. Each scene is intricately woven to reach a climax that fits perfectly into what message was supposed to be passed.

Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley couldn’t have been a more perfect fit. It was an odd-couple kind of relationship dynamic that shows growth, personal development, and a reformation of perspective. From the uneasiness of Tony and the stiffness of Don, their brotherhood and chemistry progress into something beautiful, and quite frankly, unique. . A scene that stays with me? The one where the banter over Don should eat the fried chicken in the car and the ice is broken. With these two, you see the uglies hidden just under the surface and how man, in our own right, just cannot be perfect. The struggle of fitting in. Too black to be considered white, and too white to be considered black. Torn between two worlds, and still not accepted and even shunned by either.

It’s a beautiful story that you just cannot fully describe but will always remember. From the impeccable acting to the even more divinely sounding tracks, everything was tailored to be beautiful even in all the ugliness that surrounds it. It makes a lot of sense for this movie to win an Oscar. Can’t say a single negative thing about it. As opposed to the raunchy comedies that Peter Farrelly is known for making, he clearly outdid himself with this serious theme. Hope you enjoy!
