It all begins with Joe Gardner, a high school music teacher in New York City. At that moment, his soul separates from his body and begins its journey to the "Afterlife." Realizing that his life is about to end at its peak, Joe resists dying and, in his attempt to escape, accidentally ends up in the "Backworld": the place where new souls receive their tastes, interests, and personality before they are born.
To find a way back to his world, Joe poses as the mentor of "22," a rebellious soul who has been trapped there for centuries because she is unable to obtain her "spark," the essential requirement for passage to Earth. They strike a deal: Joe will help her find her spark, and in return, she will give him her pass so he can return to his body.
However, the plans go awry.
