I went into this movie expecting dragons, fighting and the usual Disney adventure. I got all of that, plus the argument between Raya and Sisu.
Raya doesn't trust people.
And honestly, I understand her.
She trusted Namaari once, and that trust ended badly.
What makes raya and the last dragon interesting is that Sisu believes trust can bring everyone together. Raya believes trust can get you hurt. Neither of them is completely wrong.
The problem is that the movie sometimes makes trust look too simple. In real life, you can't just tell someone, Trust me, and expect everything to be fine. Trust has to be built. People have to show you that they deserve it.
Everyone in Kumandra is protecting themselves because they are afraid of being betrayed. And because everyone is afraid, nobody is willing to trust anyone. That fear is what keeps the whole place divided.
Namaari wasn't written as a completely evil character. She made terrible decisions, but you can still understand why she made some of them.
And Sisu? She is probably the funniest character in the movie. She isn't the strongest dragon we've seen in movies, and that's actually the point. Her biggest strength is that she still believes people can be better even after everything that has happened.
But I still have one problem with the message hehehe.
In the ending raya do not know for certain that Namaari will do the right thing. She doesn't have proof. She doesn't get a guarantee.
She simply chooses to trust.
And that is probably the hardest part of the whole story.
The difficult part is trusting someone when you have every reason to protect yourself.
So, is Sisu right that trust can save the world?
Maybe.

You would agree with me that watching movies at night feels better than any other time... this movie doesn't get talked about as much as other disney movies but it deserves way more love honestly, feels like one of their more slept-on entries from the last few years.
QUICK SETUP — the world of kumandra used to be one unified land until these shadow monster things called the druun show up out of nowhere and start turning people to stone, and the dragons end up sacrificing themselves to save what's left of humanity, leaving behind one gem that keeps the druun away for good. 500 years later humanity's split into five bickering tribes fighting over that gem instead of trusting each other, the gem ends up getting broken during one of these conflicts, druun come back, and raya has to track down the last living dragon, sisu, to try and fix everything and bring the world back together before it's too late.
sisu is honestly the best part of this whole movie, no contest. awkwafina voices her and she's just so goofy and lovable in a way that could've easily been annoying but wasn't at all for me, she brings this warmth and comic relief to a movie that's otherwise pretty heavy and serious in tone. the chemistry between her and raya carries a huge chunk of the film, and their dynamic shifts nicely as raya slowly opens up over the course of the journey.
what i really like about this one though is the message underneath it all. it's basically a movie about trust, like the whole reason the world falls apart in the first place is because nobody's willing to trust each other first, everyone's just waiting for someone else to make the first move while blaming each other for the mess, and raya has to actually learn to extend trust even after getting burned badly for it early on in a way that genuinely shapes her whole personality going forward. that's a genuinely mature theme for a kids movie honestly, i wasn't expecting it to sit with that idea as much as it does, and it doesn't get preachy about it either, it just lets the plot demonstrate the point instead of spelling it out constantly.
the visuals are also stunning, southeast asian inspired landscapes, the way water and light are animated especially, there's some real gorgeous shots throughout, particularly anything involving sisu's dragon form moving through water. and the world building across the five tribes gives it a nice epic scope even with a fairly tight runtime, each region has its own distinct visual identity and culture which makes the whole kumandra setting feel lived-in rather than generic fantasy backdrop.
if i've got a complaint, the side characters outside of raya and sisu don't get a ton of development, boun and the baby con artist and tong all feel more like fun additions than fully fleshed out people, they're likeable in the moment, good for a laugh or a nice character beat, but you don't walk away remembering much about them individually once the credits roll. and namaari's arc, while genuinely interesting and probably the most complex relationship in the film outside of raya and sisu, felt like it could've used a little more room to breathe too, especially toward the resolution which moves pretty fast.
but overall this is a genuinely solid, good-hearted adventure movie with real emotional stakes and a message that actually lands instead of feeling tacked on for the sake of a moral. it balances humor, heart, and some legitimately tense action sequences well, and it's got a soft spot in my rotation now that i don't think it gets enough credit for in the broader disney conversation. underrated in the disney catalog for sure.

Raya is a young warrior who has spent years preparing to protect the Dragon Gem, something that is supposed to keep her people safe from a dangerous force known as the Druun. But after everything goes wrong, the gem is broken and the Druun return, turning people into stone. Raya then sets out to find the last dragon, Sisu, because she believes Sisu might be the only one who can help bring everything back to normal.

At first, I thought the movie was going to be a pretty straightforward fantasy adventure, but then I started noticing that the story was really more about trust than dragons. Raya has been betrayed before, so trusting other people isn't exactly easy for her. And throughout the movie, she has to keep deciding whether she should trust people even when she has every reason not to.
Al principio, pensé que la película iba a ser simplemente una aventura de fantasía bastante sencilla, pero luego empecé a darme cuenta de que la historia realmente trata más sobre la confianza que sobre los dragones. The funniest part for me was definitely Sisu. Raya is serious, cautious, and always thinking about the danger around her, while Sisu is almost the complete opposite. She's cheerful, talkative, a little strange, and sometimes doesn't seem to understand just how dangerous the situation actually is. I actually found myself laughing more because of her reactions than some of the movie's bigger jokes.
La parte más divertida para mí fue definitivamente Sisu. Raya es seria, cautelosa y siempre está pensando en el peligro que la rodea, mientras que Sisu es casi todo lo contrario. Es alegre, habladora, un poco extraña y, a veces, parece no entender lo peligrosa que es realmente la situación. What I also enjoyed was how the movie kept introducing different characters as Raya travelled through the different parts of Kumandra. Everyone has their own personality and their own reason for joining Raya. Some of them are funny, some are serious, and some of them look like people Raya should probably stay away from. But slowly, they start becoming more like a team.
También disfruté de cómo la película iba presentando diferentes personajes mientras Raya viajaba por las distintas partes de Kumandra. Todos tienen su propia personalidad y su propia razón para unirse a Raya. Algunos son divertidos, otros son serios y algunos parecen personas de las que Raya probablemente debería mantenerse alejada. The movie is obviously built around the relationship between Raya and Sisu. Raya is always thinking about what could go wrong, while Sisu keeps believing that people can still choose to do the right thing. That difference between them made their journey more interesting for me because neither one completely understands the other at the beginning.

I think the character that surprised me the most was Namaari. At first, it's very easy to look at her as just another enemy who wants to stop Raya. But as the story continues, you start seeing that things between her and Raya aren't as simple as they first seem. They both have their own reasons, their own fears, and their own understanding of what happened between them.

Of course, the story isn't something we've never seen before. The idea of bringing different people together to save the world has been used many times. The message about trust is also pretty obvious. But I didn't really mind that because I don't need a movie to give me something completely new. If the characters are interesting and the journey keeps me entertained, I'm already having a good time.
